INTRODUCTION The function of earthing in an electric power system is to (i) maintain the potential of current carrying as well as non current carrying parts of equipment, apparatus and appliances connected to the system, and (ii) to ensure safety of equipment and personnel and correct operation of protective devices during earth faults. Earthing also provides safety during lightning strikes on equipment or structures and on occurrence of induced voltages and currents on equipments of an electric system. Earthing plays an important role in proper operation of generation, transmission and distribution systems. As is well known, earthing systems are intended to protect electrical equipment and personnel involved with the equipment from the dangerous overvoltages and leakages. With the power systems becoming more and more complex, the fault levels in the system are going up. This has resulted in focusing greater attention to the design of earthing systems. Added to this, the technology development over a period of time and better understanding of the various parameters involved in the design of the earthing systems attach great importance to revision of earlier considerations and concepts. A safe earthing system provides easy and shortest path to the flow of fault current without adversely affecting the continuity of service. It is also to ensure that a person present in the station yard is not exposed to danger of electric shock. The efficacy of an earthing system depends on various factors like resistivity of surface layer of soil, duration and magnitude of fault current and grid current, the maximum safe current that a human body can tolerate and the permissible earth potential rise that may take place due to the grid current. To address various issues involved in the earthing systems, the Central Board of Irrigation & Power in association with International Association on Electricity Generation, Transmission and Distribution (AfroAsian Region) is organising a Seminar on “Earthing Systems” on 2122 May 2008 at Conference Hall of Central Board of Irrigation & Power, Malcha Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110021. GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF PAPER The full text of the paper in MS Word (three copies one original and two photocopies) alongwith floppy/CD with inbuilt figures, charts, drawings etc. prepared on Standard Bond Paper (good quality paper) of A4 (210 mm x 297 mm) size should be submitted. After having been scrutinized and accepted, papers will be printed by offset process, in crown size (240 mm x 180 mm). Therefore, the text of the paper in English must conform strictly to the following requirements and be free from errors. Only original contributions that have not been published or presented at any other forum are acceptable, and the paper shall be accompanied by the certificate to this effect otherwise the paper will not be considered. The paper title (brief and specific), name(s) of author(s) and affiliation and address, centre justified, should be typed in a space of 50 mm from the top margin on the first page. The paper should begin with a synopsis of not more than 200 words, describing the aims of work, methods adopted, results obtained and conclusions. Type the headings, sub headings and paragraphs aligned with the lefthand margin. Both side justified text is preferred. Use double space between section headings/sub headings and paragraphs. Do not number paragraphs, but number section and sub sectional headings except synopsis in conformity with established convention. SI units should be used as far as possible in the text, figures and tables. Where use of these units cannot be avoided, their equivalent in SI units should be given within parentheses. Standard and universally accepted abbreviations should be used. When a special abbreviation appears in the text for the first time, it should be accompanied by its extended form. All symbols and mathematical formulae included in the text should preferably be typed using scientific and mathematical typeface or alternatively be inserted in black ink. Symbols should be explained in the text. Figures should be drawn in black Indian ink (if not in Floppy/CD) on translucent paper or acetate material (Gateway Tissue) with lettering of appropriate size using stencils. The figures should be placed nearest to the first reference in the text and should not be larger than the print areas. Photographs on glossy paper may be included if absolutely necessary, with appropriate caption, and should be typed in original typescript where photograph(s) is/are to appear. Lettering should be of same size as the type face of the text matter. Tables in the manuscript should be numbered consecutively and referred to in the text by their numbers. A suitable heading should also be provided. References should follow the text to be listed at the end in numerical order with the corresponding number cited in brackets at appropriate places. At the end of the references, the author(s) must furnish biodata not exceeding 100 words as per sample given below: “AAAAAA graduated in Hydraulic Engineering from the University of PPPPPP in 1965. He obtained a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of QQQQQQ. From 1969 to 1980 he worked for RRRRRR, specialising in design and construction of gates at hydroplants. An IBM compatible computer CD/floppy (3.5") in conformity with the above is also required to be sent. The electronic copy should be prepared by using MS Word (suitable for windows). DATES AND VENUE The seminar will be held on 2122 May 2008 at Conference Hall, Central Board of Irrigation & Power, Malcha Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110 021. TENTATIVE PROGRAMME Registration for the seminar will start at 0830 hrs. on first day at the venue of the seminar. The technical sessions will be from 0930 to 1730 hrs on both the days with lunchbreak and two tea breaks. The registration fee includes registration kit, one copy of proceedings, working lunch and tea only in between the sessions. One copy of the manual on ‘Earthing of AC Power Systems” published by CBIP costing Rs. 1000/ shall form part of the kit. Spot registration facilities to a limited extent will be available, provided prior information is received. Cancellation of Registration / Non Attendance Fee once paid will not be refunded normally. In exceptional cases, if a registrant is unable to attend the event and claims refund by prior to two weeks of the scheduled date fee will be refunded after deducting an administrative charges of 25 per cent. After this date, no request for refund will be entertained. However, the registered delegate, who had paid the registration fee, but could not attend the event and had not claimed refund, would be sent a complete set of proceedings, and other related publications issued on the occasion of the event.
