A few reasons to try Fighter/Mage *Can cast Stoneskin - immune to melee weapons - from the beginning of the game! *Can cast Improved Invisibility from the start - THAC0 and AC reduced by 4; explore without being detected! *THAC0 and number of attacks per round as Fighter - base THAC0 gets to 0; base attacks/round gets to 3½! *Can pre-buff with many spells before battle, in particular Blur, Mirror Image, Vampiric Touch and Stoneskin *Can wield Long Swords (e.g. the Equalizer, which also increases damage for main hand weapon!) *Takes a lot of experience points to level-up but is very rewarding; does, however, level-up faster than Cleric/Ranger

Style of play remarks *Maximize experience points (xp's)! Do as many quests, side quests and miscellaneous fights as possible! *Anti-cheese: *No stealing items from merchants *Good or Neutral aligned companions only (no Happy Patch) *Do not insert a Bag of Holding, Ammo Belt, Potion Case or use bottomless Containers *Do not remove or un-learn spells from spell book to re-learn (re-scribe) for more xp's *Do not use Katana's, in particular Celestial Fury (too over-powered) *Remember to use special abilities like Stealth, Draw Upon Holy Might, etc *Buff especially with Haste/drink an Oil of Speed for tough fights *[…] = could do this but don't [Can pause and press "H" at start of game during black screen before the first "sigh" to see inventory of imported char] [If power gaming with Good and Evil companions, party could be Jaheira, Minsc, Viconia, Jan/Imoen and Edwin. Chapter 1 Irenicus Dungeon:
Level 1:
Day 0:00 Reputation (REP) = 12 at 0 gp start Imoen: Mage 8 Thief 7 Jaheira: Fighter 6 Druid 7 Plan for Jaheira: Sling until attaining Fighter level 12 then dual wield Minsc: Ranger 7 Blackblood+3 and Gnasher+2 (clubs) Plan for Minsc: Two-handed sword until attaining Ranger level 12 then dual wield Frostreaver+3 and Stonefire+3 (axes); Longbow as alternate weapon Imoen joins! Get key from table to open Jaheira's cell, 3k xp and Jaheira joins! Talk to Minsc until he gets mad and breaks the cell open, 3k xp and Minsc joins!
Select everyone's spells; select mostly healing spells, 1x Sanctuary. Imoen cast Armor and Stoneskin

Back track and go north through the "Library": fight vs Ilyich and Dwarves, Imoen cast Monster Summoning, 2820 xp Ilyich drops Mail of the Dead+2 or Plate Mail+1 (AC2) if imported from BG1, and Acorns (needed for Ulene) Locked portal door:
Use Air Statue key to enter locked door Carefully fight Mephits, Imoen cast Monster Summoning as fodder. Talk to Genie: gives Quest (get flask)
Dryads:
Back track to the east bedroom and go south ENCOUNTER Ulene, Cania and Elyme: 9500 xp if you have the Acorns, gives Quest (Deliver acorns) and flask for Genie

The alarm sound means that two Lesser Clay Golems are on their way, carefully fight for 4k xp [Optional: Ulene and Druids: drink Potion of Master Thievery to pick pocket all 2x] [do not kill or will miss a quest later]

Portal to next level:
Imoen learn spells from scrolls for xp's -> +6k xp all! These spells will be wiped clear of Imoen's spellbook when meeting her again later, so learn (scribe) all the spell scrolls!

Dismiss Yoshimo so that your core party gets more xp's; give him a load of loot to sell later because he goes to the Copper Coronet and his inventory is maintained!
Mephit portal room:
Buff with Draw Upon Holy Might and Protection vs Fire; destroy portals 1, 2 and 4, 5k xp each, and then continuously fight Magma Mephits at portal 3 for xp's! Kill e.g. 500 Mephits for 200k xp! (totally unnecessary, but why not)

Cowled Wizards seize Imoen! All are awarded with 34500 xp!
This walkthrough focuses on finding Imoen as soon as possible so that she doesn't lose-out on too many xp's, therefore not much equipment or experience will actually be gathered before getting to Chapter 4 (but the party will still kick butt!) Collect Imoen's gear from ground. Use the containers near Galoomp, for example, to store-up items Selectively sell stuff at Galoomp only when you have 20 pieces of the item (e.g. 20x Composite Longbows) to maximize payout You don't need to buy items now! Keep spells scrolls to learn later with Imoen and other NPC's Keep the Pommel Jewel of the Equalizer (component)

"So, where to now, fearless leader?"…talk 3, 2 Note: the next romance dialog will not happen (I think) until you enter and then exit the Copper Coronet and it seems to take 47-53 minutes of real-time to initiate. Tips for Romance:
Jaheira romance: typically 33 minutes of real-time between each dialog unless noted. You can pause the game (Space Bar) to pass the time to progress the romance. Sometimes you need to walk a bit to get the dialog to initiate. You can use these walkthrough notes for Jaheira's romance together with the Romance FAQ by SlashR4 (v 2.0) from Gamefaqs.com; my notes include additional information such as the loot that can be obtained.
Overall strategy for Fighter/Mage: My style is front-line fighter wearing armor at least until there are enough spell slots for both Stoneskin and Spirit Armor; then, wear a robe of choice and buff before fights with Stoneskin and Spirit Armor in particular
Buffing tips when fighting melee: Fighter 8 / Mage 9 with Long Sword+1 and Long Sword: Stoneskin (12 hours) Vampiric Touch (5 turns): adds a lot of hp's; simply cast at a summoned creature [or container or item on the ground] Protection from Evil (3 rounds/level): evil enemies' attack rolls get 2 penalty Blur (4 rounds + 2 rounds/level) Mirror Image (3 rounds + 1 round/level) Draw Upon Holy Might (1 turn = 10 rounds) Anomen cast: Aid (1 round + 1 round/level) Anomen cast: Chant (10 rounds) Jaheira cast: Bless (6 rounds) Anomen or Jaheira cast: Defensive Harmony (6 rounds) Improved Invisibility (3 rounds + 1 round/level) Haste (3 rounds + 1 round/level) Optional: with a shield

*Protagonist use the best armor found and eventually Full Plate (AC1) from Jaheira romance confrontations; robe later *Minsc use the next best armor found until getting Full Plate from Jaheira romance confrontations; use until Chapter 5 *Keldorn use own Full Plate+1 (AC0) until getting a third set of Full Plate (can get from Nalia's personal quest) *Jaheira use Plate+1 (AC2), or Plate and a Ring of Protection, until getting Full Plate in Chapter 5 when she will be levelled-up enough to be a front-line fighter *Anomen: same as Jaheira; will eventually get a Full Plate *Armor could be bought, of course, but it is not necessary © bg2mez

General tips:
*Minimize the use of Jan (thief) by temporarily dismissing him ("park" him e.g. in the Slums) when a thief is not absolutely needed, so your party doesn't waste xp's on him *Try to save unlocking and de-trapping chests, and quests in general, until Imoen re-joins the party, wherever possible, so she gets more xp's! De-trap/unlock is 1750/400 xp in Chapter 2 vs 2750/950 xp in Ch 5 (+1550 xp or 70% more per container) *Summon creatures to help fight or to be used as fodder *If all else fails, drink a Potion of Invisibility to flee *Sell spell scrolls only if in desperate need of gold, otherwise keep them to learn with companions and other NPC's
Note about Vampire encounters at night: Vampires usually spawn once per night between 23:30 and 05:00 and can do so only in certain areas: Docks: north between the exits, or south areas Slums: near northern exit Government: center area Gates: center area Promenade: center south area Bridge: center area near Five Flagons, or south near exit Temple and Graveyard: they do not spawn here So do not travel at night to avoid fighting the Vampires, or at least be very careful, until you get the magical items from the Thieves at the start of Chapter 3! Or at least have +2 weapons and know the spell Restoration or have a Restoration spell scroll (can buy cheapest from Bernard in the Copper Coronet).

Plan for phase 1:
Slums:
First priority is to advance Jaheira's romance (in my opinion) Get companions (Good/Neutral only): Anomen, Keldorn and Jan (part-timer) Pick Ribald's pockets for Ring of Regeneration (use Jan) Go to De'Arnise Keep to get Flail of Ages+3 Collect loot to eventually sell to instigate Chapter 3 to get magical items
Outside: Loot the roof-top of the Copper Coronet; loot the Temple Borinall's house: Force the door open; get the War Hammer+1 from table! Copper Coronet: ENCOUNTER Nalia: gives Quest ("Q") (De'Arnise), join/dismiss 45 gp Avoid Amalas and Surly until later (or fight now) Talk to Anomen, Anomen joins! STR 18/52, DEX 10; WIS 12 can be upgraded to 16 (in part II of his quest). Note that his shield can cast Protection from Normal Missiles

Plan for Anomen: Sling for a while until ready to use the Skullcrusher +3 (mace); possibly later dual wield Skullcrusher+3 and Mace of Disruption+2 or Defender of Easthaven+3 (flail) Therefore Shadowkeeper will be used (for the last time) to adjust Anomen's proficiency points by moving 4 points around: Flail* (+1 point), Mace*** (+1 point), Sling*** (+1 point), Sword and Shield* (-1 point), Two Weapon Style* (+1 point), War Hammer* (same); Spear (-2) and Quarterstaff (-1) Resulting in THAC0 14/12 (2 attacks per round) with Sling; 14/10 (2) with Mace Anomen's personal quest begins in approximately 5½ days (if not playing with Anomen: can dismiss him and ask him to join later and the quest will still be given)
Talk to Yoshimo: join/dismiss to take loot Note: talk to Amalas and fight before Day 6 otherwise he leaves!
Travelling between areas:
Could get "waylaid" by Slavers or Bandits at any time travelling between maps but try to avoid getting waylaid until you have made the Flail of Ages+3 (save before crossing maps)
Jaheira romance: At some time will get Love Dialog (LD) number 2: "It has been some time since I have been this far south.…Hmm…seems I cannot help but speak of the dead lately...." talk 1, 2, 1

Temple of Helm: Loot Outside:
ENCOUNTER Gaal, Dawnmaster Kreel, High Mornmaster Arval
Temple of Lathander:
Talk to High Mornmaster Arval Q (Cult of the Eyeless) Get a quest also from Dawnbringer Sain Q (illithium) (These quests might be given by Guardian Telwyn or High Watcher Oisig from the Temple of Helm depending on your alignment or class and if you have installed Unlimited Strongholds mod) Loot only the SW bookcases and cabinets
Sewers:
Minsc and protagonist use Stealth (or cast Sanctuary) and walk through the centre of the sewers to NW area to get Keldorn Keldorn joins! Plan: use Two Handed Sword**, and X-bow** as alternative. Also has LS**. Casts True Sight, Dispel Magic and Protection from Evil! Use his sword: 1d10+2 and +5 if he is hit; Full Plate+1 (AC0)
Keldorn Inquisitor 8 161k xp, TH 13/9 (2) 104hp, AC0, STR 17 (or TH 13/12 (2) with X-bow)
Plan for Keldorn: Two-handed sword all the way! X-bow is a good alternate weapon

Down hallway from entrance: an Otyugh could spawn for 5k xp, and can re-spawn approximately each day! Otyugh is randomly generated; could otherwise get a Crawler (974 xp) or Mephit (400 xp)

Note: can Rest in the Sewers and Old Tunnels if needed Temple of Talos: Loot desk in backroom and chest in NE room for Antidotes and Potions of Healing (have in quick slot at all times) *Back room desk: can get Laeral's tear or Level 6-8 scroll! Greater Whirlwind got her down to "Badly Injured" but she would not fall. Greater Malison stuck but Domination and Feeble mind would not, and Creeping Doom would not interrupt her spell casting]
