THUMB TIP MAGIC The Thumb Tip is, as you probably know, the most popular ul ar secre secrett devi device ce ever devi devise sed d fo forr conjuri conjuring ng purposes. A ccording to George Johnson, who was long the editor of the Magic Wand, Professor Herwinn, of Bristol, England, used a Thumb Tip in the mid middl dlee 1880s. On Onee of his earl early y mode modells may m ay be seen in the museum of the Magic Circle in London. Thumb Tips came into into wide wide use at the tur turn n of the ce centur ntury y when magicians discovered that with their aid, they could duplicate, or at least offer a reasonable facsimile of, Ching Ling Foo's famous torn and restored paper strip mystery. Since then, the hollow, flesh-colored f lesh-colored accessories ccessories have been a utilized for almost every phase of conjuring; to produce, vanish and Change articles; as an aid to mentalists; to create effects contrary to the laws of nature. They are most frequently employed today in causing lighted cigarettes to vanish from the centers of handkerchiefs. Unless specifically instructed otherwise, keep the Thumb Tip out of the audienc audience' e'ss view view as much as pos possi sible ble.. A wel welll painte pai nted d Tip will will be unnoti unnoticed ced if your thumb is point pointed ed directl directly y toward the spectators, but don't make a point of showing, it unless it is necessary for the trick.
