Re: What is the difference between FER and BER? Answer # 2 Error ratios used in conjunction with GSM speech channels: · Frame Erasure Rate, FER, is defined as the amount of swept speech frames (260 bi ts each) divided by the amount of transmitted speech frames. The speech frame is swept if even one of its most important 50 bits is observed not to be correct. The three parity bits following the 50 class Ia bits are used for error detection. · Bit Error Rate, BER, is the ratio of erroneously received bits to all received b its. It is important to notice that BER is evaluated before channel decoding, i.e. after eq ualiser. BER is used for defining the RXQUAL value BCCH - Broadcast Control CHannel The Broadcast Control CHannel (BCCH) is a logical broadcast channel used by the basestation in a GSM network to send information about the identity of the netwo rk. This information is used by a mobile station to get access to the network. This information includes the Mobile Network Code (MNC), the Location Area Code (LAC) and a list of frequencies used by the neigbouring cells (BA: BCCH Allocati on List). Q3....Cell Global Identity (CGI) is a standard identifier for mobile phones cel ls, providing means to geographically locate connected mobile phones. If a cell phone is connected to a GSM network then the position of that particular cell ph one can be determined using CGI of the cell which is covering that cell phone. T here is a series of related technologies that were developed based on CGI that e nhances the location precision: Cell Global Identity with Timing Advance (CGI+TA ), Enhanced CGI (E-CGI), Cell ID for WCDMA, Uplink Time Difference Of Arrival (U -TDOA) and Any Time Interrogation (ATI), and the high accuracy terminal based me thod Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS).

SACCH: Slow Associated Control Channel Slow Associated Control Channel (SACCH) is a GSM signalling channel that provide s a relatively slow signalling connection. The SACCH is associated with either a traffic or dedicated channel. The SACCH can also be used to transfer Short Mess age Service (SMS) messages if associated with a traffic channel.
