Former President of Fiji and Tui Vuda Ratu Josefa Iloilo Uluivuda was finally laid to rest at the chiefly burial ground of Naburenivalu in Viseisei. The village came to a standstill as the people of Vuda, Government leaders and senior officials, members of the diplomatic corps and people from all walks of life gathered to bid farewell to a person dubbed by many as “a humble leader”. A slight drizzle fell as the casket of the late Tui Vuda was carried by the members of Republic of Fiji Military Forces to Naburenivalu where the traditional handover took place before its entrance into the sacred burial ground. Commissioner Eastern LieutenantColonel Neumi Leweni then officially handed the casket over to the Tokatoka Nakelo from the Sauturaga clan before it was traditionally handed over to the Yavusa Natububere. This is a norm in the Vanua of Vuda as traditional protocol was followed. Members of the Yavusa Natububere are the only people allowed to enter the burial ground. A 21 gun salute was fired signifying the State funeral before the casket was placed in the tomb. No one was allowed into the Sau Tabu except his widow Adi Salaseini Kavunono Seniloli. This tradition is still observed and respected in the

Vanua of Vuda. Even the President Ratu Epeli Naitailatikau and Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama were not allowed to enter to place their wreaths and had to pay their last respects from the entrance to the Sautabu. It was a farewell fit for the man hailed as a great and humble leader and a kindhearted chief. It was also the end of an era for a man regarded as Fiji’s longest serving statesman. Ratu Iloilo was born on December 29, 1929 and died on February 6, 2011 at the Suva Private Hospital at the age of 90.

Kodak hosts meet for the Asia Pacific region
Imaging innovator Kodak is hosting their annual kick-off meeting for the Asia Pacific region at Denarau’s Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa. Presentations at the conference also saw the announcement of some new and exciting products being introduced to the Fiji market next week. The announcement was made by Kodak’s official Fiji channel partner Ikbal Jannif of Caines Jannif. Some of these products are photo books and albums, calendars, postcards and cards. “Judging from how many weddings there have been at the Resort since we’ve
been here, these products, in particular the albums and photo books will be very successful,” said Lois Lebegue, vice president sales, consumer and commercial for the Asia Pacific Region. Kodak kiosks are available to the consumer in most parts of Fiji, and Mr Jannif is looking at having several other installations for the access of more people. In the not too far future, Fiji might be able to get the opportunity to have some of the latest technology Kodak cameras. The cameras boast style, convenience and function, with features such as shock,
dust and water proof, high definition still and recorded images, with others having the beauty of very popular touch screen technology. The meeting, which serves as a marker for setting the year’s agenda and tone, as well as an event at which new products are launched, was attended by representatives of the Kodak company and its channel partners in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the Asia Pacific region. According to Adrian Fleming, managing director Australia and NZ and Mr Lebegue, the company is now more than
just traditional film. Trends and technology development have over the years made the emergence and use of digital photography so widespread that over 80 per cent of the company’s revenue is made from digital photography and imaging. Apart from new products, research and development is also seeing barriers being broken in the programme department. Through the internet, sharing options are boundless from one medium to another, with uploading and sharing of images being sent, for example directly from one’s phone to a digital photo-frame.
Tropical cyclone likely to pass southwest of Fiji
A tropical cyclone is expected to pass southwest of Fiji in the next few days. Senior meteorologist at the Nadi weather office Amit Singh said a tropical disturbance is now located northeast of Vanuatu which is expected to become a tropical depression
by Saturday and possibly become a cyclone early Sunday. Singh said if that occurs than the tropical cyclone is expected to take a southsoutheast track and pass southwest of the Fiji group from Sunday to Monday.
He also reiterated that heavy rain and thunderstorms is expected over most parts of the group from Saturday. “This is due to the depression. The rain we are experiencing now is due to an active trough over the group,” he added.
Also flooding of low lying areas is expected and the public is to take safety precautionary measures. Strong winds are expected over the Western division (including the Yasawa and Mamanuca group) and Kadavu from later Saturday night.
Cabinet approves Fiji Islands Audio-Visual Commission (Amendment) Decree 2011
Cabinet has approved the Fiji Islands Audio Visual Commission (Amendment) Decree 2011. The decree amends the Fiji Islands Audio –Visual Commission Act to vary the membership of the Fiji Audio Visual Commission (FAVC) Board. The decision was reached through a submission by the Attorney General and Minister for Industry and Trade,
Mr Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. The FAVC Act established the FAVC for the purpose of developing and promoting the audio-visual industry in Fiji. The Attorney General said the current membership structure of the FAVC Board was no longer effective in meeting the challenges of developing the audio-visual industry in Fiji.
“There is therefore an urgent need to revise the membership structure of the FAVC Board with a view to finding an appropriate balance for suitable FAVC Board members,” Mr SayedKhaiyum said. He also said that the FAVC was an entity involved in business decision and thus required increased involvement of the private sector and
commitment to develop the audiovisual industry. Under the Amendment Decree, Section 4 (1) of the FAVC Act is amended to allow the minister to appoint members without restriction to certain sectors or government agencies. Section 7(2) of the FAVC Act is also amended to reflect a quorum of three members at a meeting of the board.

Pacific Islands Forum team to visit Fiji THE Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group on Fiji has agreed to visit Fiji to meet stakeholders in order to understand the political, social and economic challenges facing Fiji. Fiji’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola met with the MCG members and advised them on Fiji’s progress in its vision for a better Fiji. The fourth meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group (MCG) on Fiji met at the Vanuatu Reserve Bank Conference Room in Port Vila, Vanuatu. In a press release, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat said MCG Ministers reaffirmed that Forum concerns over the situation in Fiji reflected the underlying values of the forum, namely the respect for democracy, good governance and the rule of law.
It said that the MCG noted the longstanding offer by Forum leaders to support Fiji’s early return to parliamentary democracy in accordance with the leaders mandate and the Biketawa Declaration, including the provision of appropriate assistance. At the meeting MCG ministers encouraged the Fiji Government to restore democracy as soon as possible and stressed that a constitutionally elected government was necessary to ensure steps were taken to build investor confidence in the country. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Meltek Sato Kilman Livtuvanu. Also present at the meeting were Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs Richard Marles and New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully.
Canned fish scare double labeling
Suresh, 63, of Raralevu outside Nausori with an Angler Mackerel tin fish wrapped in a Reshma Gold brand label.
SOME consumers who bought a particular brand of canned fish from a shop in Nausori have claimed to have suffered from diarrhea after eating the fish. Raralevu residents bought the canned fish from Jackson Investment and complained to the owners about the fish. Shop owner, Jagend Kumar said the product in question was Reshma Gold brand canned fish. Mr Kumar said they bought the canned fish from J. Santaram Supermarket and were not aware of the problem until consumers returned the product complaining about its quality.
that there were two labels on the can and the top label said “Reshma Gold” while the bottom label had “Angler Mackerel” on it,” he said. Mr Kumar said he refunded some of the consumers who demanded their money back but he could not refund everyone. “We bought a carton of canned fish and about one dozen of cans had the problem,” he said. Suresh, 63, who bought the canned fish early in the week said: “I do not know about the rest of the people but it upset my stomach.” However, the Ministry of Health’s Food Unit director, Jope Tamani said he doubted if the consumers really suffered from diarrhea after eating the fish. Mr Tamani said the Food Unit was aware of the double labeling issue and had asked J. Santaram Supermarket to hold the retail of that particular brand of canned fish. “It has been almost a month now that the product has been on hold and there has not been any health issues associated to it,” he said. Mr Tamani said the company that produced the canned fish uses pre-printed cans and that was what happened with J. Santaram Supermarket. He said double labeling of products was a breach of fair trading act but in this case the retailer was just a victim. “It is a common case now where people claim to suffer from using products and want to get money from the retailers,” he said. However, Mr Tamani said if people in Raralevu claimed to have suffered from diarrhea after eating the canned fish then they should consult a doctor because as far as the Food Unit was aware there was no health issues associated with the product.
Fiji Water gains popularity in New York FIJI Water is popular in the United States of America not only because of its taste but because it has been marketed well. Movie stars are seen drinking it and it has even appeared on some popular television shows. This week, the company kept models and designers hydrated at the New York Fashion Week. The company’s website reported it was back in the tents at Lincoln Center as the official water of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the premier event of New York Fashion Week. With fashion evolving as fast as technology, the company maximized on both using Facebook to exclusively stream live the Fall 2011 collection of Project Runway winner Christian Siriano last Thursday. Project Runway is an American reality television series, which focused on fashion design and
hosted by model Heidi Klum. The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are usually restricted in time, materials and theme. Their designs are judged, and one or more designers are eliminated each week. FIJI Water also had a contest to win a “look” from Mr Siriano’s collection but the contest didn’t go live until after the “Siriano” show. And the company hosted a special appearance by famed performance artists ‘The Bumbys’. The company prompted online: “A little bit snarky and a lot sweet, Jill and Gil Bumby will be the real fashion critics this season in the tents at Lincoln Center. Stop by their table in the lobby to receive a “Fair and Honest Appraisal of Your Appearance.” FIJI Water also sponsored fashion interns to give out FIJI Water bottles to the “assembled glitterati”.

Dalo inspection essential for ongoing trade
David LINGHAM Publisher
The recent visit from officers manning Australia’s biosecurity was to scrutinize the Fiji dalo export processes. This is after fresh dalo was rejected from Australia between March and August 2010 because of non-compliance with Australia’s quarantine requirements. The comments were made by acting chief executive officer, Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Ilatia Boa, in a press statement. “One of the major issues was that a few fresh taro corms rotted on arrival in Australia due to an infection caused
by pathogenic organisms that invaded damaged tissues during transit,” said Mr Boa. He said the problem could have resulted from poor handling during harvesting and transportation or at the packing house when consignments were prepared for export. Semy Siakimotu (senior advisor to plant biosecurity on Pacific crops) and Nick Nolan (senior scientist, pest risk analysis) of Australia Biosecurity visited major dalo production areas in Fiji, including Taveuni, Fiji’s dalo hub,
and Waibau in Naitasiri (Viti Levu). The team also visited exporters’ packing houses to observe the postharvest cleaning process that must meet quarantine requirements for export to Australia. “The visitors held discussions with taro farmers, buyers (middlemen), processors and exporters on maintaining the high quality of taro through proper handling, transportation, processing and packaging to minimize damage to taro corms and to minimize or prevent the occurrence of rot,” Mr Boa said.
PATIENT COMPENSATED

Senior Writer GAIB

A man who suffered permanent damage to his bladder and bowel after an operation to his back went horribly wrong has been given more than $410,000 in compensation from government. The compensation awarded to Abhi Manu of Lautoka follows a high court decision to rule in his favour. Justice Sosefo Inoke ordered the Fiji government to pay Manu a total of $410,400 in damages and court fees after an operation in September, 2001 to fix his aching back left him with permanent damages to his bladder, bowels and sexual function. While delivering his judgment, Justice Inoke said due to Manu’s unfortunate circumstance, all courts could do nothing
but “do its best to compensate the patient justly according to law.” Justice Inoke also highlighted the need to change the law in certain areas. “This case highlights the need to change the law in two areas. The first is the immunity from personal liability of doctors, and for that matter lawyers and other professionals, who are employed by government to practice their professions,” “Their negligent practices should not be at the expense of the public purse. I do not think it is right that a doctor should be allowed to practice with such impunity over many years and then move into private practice and take advantage of the seniority and experience that he
gained under indemnity by the public purse,” “The second is the amount and extent of the compensation which the Court should award to a patient who has suffered at the hands of the negligent doctor.” The high court judge said. Manu finally won his case against the surgeon who operated on him 10 years ago after several failed attempts. He lost his first trial in 2006 but was able to start a fresh trial after he appealed against the judgment. An initial amount of $701,000 was supposed to be paid to Manu, however, state lawyers appealed against the 2008 decision and were able to start another trial before Justice Inoke in 2010.

Mr Namotu said the Ministry of Health was focused on promoting good hygiene in restaurants.
“Corrective actions report have been issued to restaurant where noncompliance existed,” he said. “They have to be re-audited to confirm the attendance of the non-compliance.” Meanwhile Mr Namotu said there were some restaurants that were given time to comply with the food safety regulations but the time given to them varied, depending on the type of noncompliance.

Travel agents experience Fiji warmth
ABOUT 90 STA Travel Australia agents had a beach party on South Seas Islands in the Mamanuca Island Group. After three days of conferencing at the Radisson Resort on Denarau Island, the team was taken for a typical Pacific/Fijian sea, sun and sand experience.
The afternoon started off with a 30-minute boat ride to the island on Awesome Adventures Fiji. This was the first time for majority of the agents who are mainly STA Travels branch sales managers from Australia and New Zealand. “Fiji is a common product that we deal with and we get a lot of great feedbacks from those who came to Fiji. It is one of our best selling products,” said Kanya Montgomery from Melbourne. She added that being in Fiji was unbeatable. “To hear of Fiji and then to come and experience it with the beautiful environment and the friendly people all around is so
different. This place is really and truly the place to come to for a holiday,” said Ms Montgomery. Each of the agents had the time of their life at South Sea Cruises, much to the pleasure of the South Seas owner, Christopher Jacobs. “They will go home knowing about the product they are selling to their customers. I can see that they are enjoying themselves very much. We have been working with them for some time now and they have helped us a lot,” he said. South Sea Cruises is Fiji’s most experienced cruise operator with an extensive range of award winning day cruises and Island
Resort transfers. The company offers full and half day cruises and a range of lunch options to a variety of stunning Mamanuca Island resorts including Bounty, Castaway, Treasure, Mana, Amanuca, Malolo and its very own South Sea Island. The company has two fast, modern vessels and a new and improved service with shorter travelling times to and from most resorts. In the 10 years of South Sea Cruises ownership, it has been awarded the 1999 Excellence in Tourism Award South Sea Cruises, the Visitor Transportation and the Fiji Tourism Award Winner 2003 and 2005.

Movie proceeds to help orphans
Bollywood director Param Sivan promotes his movie Tum Jo Mile at a press conference in Suva. The movie will screen in Fiji next month.
FIJI-born Bollywood film maker, Param Sivan plans to help orphans in Fiji from the money collected from his movie. Mr Sivan is in the country to promote his film Tum Jo Mile, which has two Bollywood actors who will debut in the movie. Speaking at a press conference at the Fiji National University Raiwai campus Mr Sivan said his wish to help orphans in Fiji stemmed from his own childhood. “I grew up as a kid who missed out on a lot
of things and so this is my way of giving back to those kids what I have lost in life,” he said. Mr Sivan said he believed that if he could touch one child’s heart and life with his work then it would mean a lot to him. The former Bhawani Dayal and Dudley High School student is now based in Sydney and says Fiji holds a very special place in his heart. Mr Sivan said as a young boy he was interested in acting but his camera shyness ended that dream but he found a way to keep his interest in cinema alive by learning how to direct, edit and write songs. He produced, directed and wrote two songs for his movie. Movies with love stories are common in Bollywood and almost every film maker has tried their hands at making movies with love stories. Mr Sivan’s movie Tum Jo Mile is also in the category of romance and love stories but he believes that his film will be loved by the younger generation. “I believe that we can relate to people through love and that is why I chose a love story. Besides a love story is easy to make compared to an action movie,” he said with a smile. Mr Sivan said his film was for pure entertainment of the audience and movie

goers would love the film. According to Mr Sivan his film was supposed to be shot in Fiji but certain problems did not allow that to happen. The movie was shot in India with both the male and female actors debuting. “The lead male actor in my film is Daebuu Banerjee who is Bollywood film legend Mithun Chakarvorty’s nephew and the female lead actress is Nivedita Tiwari. “I plan to launch the film in Fiji in March and then in India. I am planning to bring both my lead actors to Fiji for a red carpet screening of the movie and I am having discussions with Damodar Brothers on this,” he said. Movie making can be an expensive and difficult work if one does not have good contacts and financial backing in India. However Mr Sivan said he was able to overcome both the problems because he managed to be-friend some good people in
9
India who assisted him in his project. He said he was aware that Fiji government has good incentives for film makers and there were many Bollywood film makers who had shown interest in making films in Fiji. “I plan to make my next film in Fiji with Fijian actors and a Fiji theme. I know local people will laugh after they hear the name of my film but that is just what my intention is. My next film will be a comedy and its name is “Chatai kaha bachao” (where to spread the mat),” he said. Mr Sivan said his priority with the film was to put Fiji on the map and to give exposure to local talent. “There are people who are full of talent in Fiji and everywhere you turn there is a person who is capable of doing so much. “This is what I want to develop and that is why I plan to come back to Fiji and make my next film,” he said.
AFL wins Nausori hangar tender bids
Airports Fiji Limited has won the tender to purchase all three hangars at Nausori International Airport. “Once we have obtained the hangars, we believe that they will significantly contribute to our commercial and operational airport development,” said AFL chief executive Ratu Timoci
Tuisawau. All three of the hangars were owned by Air Fiji but in recent years the local airline was in serious financial trouble and the banks took over the ownership. While Air Fiji built two of the hangars, Air Pacific constructed the third in l972 as home to its BAC1-11s.

SUVA CITY COMES TO A STAND STILL
After travelling through the city, the cortege stopped at the old Government Supplies building at Walu Bay. With drum beats continuing in the background, the draped casket of the late Tui Vuda was transferred from the Gun Carriage to the chiefly hearse. Employees from the National Fire Authority, Government Supplies, Motibhai Group, Telecom Fiji and other companies along Walu Bay filled both sides of the road and bowed their heads in respect as the hearse passed by. Ratu Epeli and Commodore Bainimarama marched behind the vehicle carrying Ratu Iloilo’s widow, Adi Kavunono.
Suva City came to a standstill as hundreds lined the streets to bid farewell to the late former President and Tui Vuda Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda. Respect, honor and reverence marked the solemn occasion as people took time from work to take a glimpse at the chiefly cortege as it departed Government House for the last time. Escort platoons of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces numbering in the hundreds kept the tempo of the sorrowful march.
Among them were the two highest ranking officers in the land, His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
It was a magnificent send-off for a great, compassionate leader who commanded the respect of many. As the casket slowly passed through the capital city Suva where the fallen chief long held his seat of power both as the vice- president and president, the crowds bowed their heads. The same crowds then rushed after the cortege to Walu Bay where the casket was lifted off the gun carriage and placed into the masi decorated hearse. From the young to the old, they all braved the hot sun to bid Ratu Iloilovatu farewell. Along the Queens Highway, people seated on road sides as a final homage for Ratu Iloilovatu as his casket accompanied by both the Prime Minister and the President made the final journey to Vuda.
United Nations sends condolence message
The United Nations Resident Coordinator Knut Ostby noted Fiji has lost an ‘extraordinary’ leader with the passing of the former President and Tui Vuda the late Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda. He expressed the condolence of all United Nation’s Agencies in Fiji in a letter to the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Solo Mara. “On behalf of the United Nations Agencies in Fiji, I am writing to express our deep regret and sorrow on learning of the death of the Tui Vuda and former President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda, CF, MBE, KSt.J, MSD, JP,” he said.
“We were saddened to learn about the passing away of Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda on Sunday February 6. “Fiji, and indeed, the world, has lost an extraordinary leader whose commitment to the progress of his country and the betterment of all its citizens was total. “We will miss Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda’s diplomatic skills, vision and his humanity. “May his soul rest in peace. “Please extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Adi Kavunono and her family and we hope that these few words will comfort them during this time of sadness and personal loss.”

Blue Lagoon Cruises wins award
BLUE Lagoon Cruises edged out strong international competition to take out the Most preferred Venue 2010 award at the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo in Melbourne. And while the company deserves a pat on the back, BLC’s chief executive officer Tim Stonhill says the prestigious award is reflective of the warmth and generosity of Fiji’s biggest asset - its people. Mr Stonhill also said the award marked a significant recognition of the company’s ability to provide a service comparable to similar operators worldwide. “This is an acknowledgement of our ongoing ability to deliver a world-class MICE product combining a very relaxed and highly informal ‘barefoot’ approach in a truly unique South Seas environment,” he said. Mr Stonhill said the award also recognized Blue Lagoon’s key point of difference from overseas competitors - the people of Fiji. “No matter how high the standard achieved, integral to everything we do is our ability to continue to present a first-class product that embodies the uniqueness of Fiji and its people.” “”I would like to thank the ships’ crew and staff for the part they play in ensuring that collectively, we continue to deliver a firstclass MICE product that is the envy of the
South Pacific,” Mr Stonhill said. The inaugural EventConnect.com ‘Preferred Suppliers Awards’ have been developed to recognize venues and services listed within the company’s website which have gained the most ‘votes’ from buyers that ‘tag’ their preferred suppliers. Approximately 3,000 votes were cast to 853 venues and services across the Asia Pacific region during 2010.

Cabinet sits outside of Suva for the first time
For the first time Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and his cabinet held their meeting outside of Suva when it met in the western side. Cabinet members converged on Nadi at the Airports Fiji Limited headquarters boardroom in what was said to be a business as usual move. The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Lieutenant-Colonel Pio Tikoduadua, said the reason for the meeting was to be able to fulfill the commitment of being present at the
THE National Farmers Union is calling on the Fiji Sugar Corporation to “stop fooling” sugarcane growers in Ba. The call came as farmers raised serious concerns about the Rarawai mill being ready in time for the start of crush this year. Earlier this week, FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan said mill maintenance works had started as scheduled on February 1. With concerns from the union for a boiler replacement, Khan said the Rarawai mill boiler would not be replaced. Instead, it would undergo extensive rehabilitative work to ensure it was fully operational prior to the start of crush in June. National Farmers Union Ba president, Gaffar Ahmed said there had been no
funeral preparations of former President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, as well as to continue Cabinet meetings. “Tuesdays is the standard day on which Cabinet holds its meetings, but due to the observance of the State funeral, it was decided that cabinet would be rescheduled,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Tikoduadua. “It is so that work continues as usual, and there were also pressing matters that required addressing.” He said that many ministers had
“Don’t fool the growers” indication of any maintenance work being carried out by the FSC at Rarawai so far despite declarations in the media by FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan. “The FSC has to stop fooling people with false statements in the media. There has been no maintenance work carried out at Rarawai so far. We are very concerned because the main issue with Rarawai is the 30-year-old boiler. This needs to be replaced immediately,” he said. Ahmed said boiler replacement, a time consuming exercise, had to be done or else the mill would continue to be plagued with problems and stoppages. “We are calling on the FSC to stop whitewashing by repairing the boiler.
Chilli puts Grantham into Guinness World Records
GRANTHAM is officially home to the hottest chilli in the world after recognition from the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records this week. Nick “Woody” Woods made headlines around the world when his Infinity Chilli broke all records by measuring 1.17 million on the scoville scale measuring the spicy heat of chilli peppers. Woody runs his own business, Fire Foods, from his home in Manthorpe Estate, Grantham, and grew the recordbreaking chilli in his greenhouse. He said “We do feel quite honored to get it because everyone in the world has heard of the Guinness Book of World Records. “Even if someone else comes along and
scheduled appointments and meetings in the West and it just made sense when the opportunity presented itself. Whether there are intentions for similar moves to be made in the future of holding cabinet outside of Suva, he said if circumstances necessitated it then he did not see it as an impossibility, although mentioning that the decision ultimately lay with the Prime Minister. “We would like to, but that is at the discretion of the Prime Minister. This is the first occasion, but you might see more
beats it, they can never take it away from us that we once held the world record.” The Infinity chilli beat the former number one, Bhut Jolokia, grown in India, which is so potent it is used in army hand grenades. Woody will be crossing his fingers for the next few months in the hope his chilli remains on top long enough to make it into the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records - released in September. He said: “Hopefully when the book comes out for Christmas we will be in it because it will be seen by people around the world. “That’s all I want, just to make into one book. It’s not every day someone from Grantham makes it into the Guinness Book of World Records and I’m available to switch on the Christmas lights this year if anyone wants me!” Woody runs Fire Foods with his wife Zoe. The pair made headlines around the world when the news emerged of their record-breaking chilli. Woody said: “The interest has never really gone away which is brilliant. There are dozens of people who grow chillies around the country but we just got lucky really.”
It is way past its use-by date and needs immediate replacement. “This is the opportune time as the mills are all currently down,” Ahmed said. He said the issue needed to be addressed as the country stood to get a good price for sugar this year because of floods in Queensland, Brazil’s sugar industry
if this in the future; taking Cabinet out of Suva,” he said. “The government might want to move around the country to assess progress in different places as we approach 2012 and proceed onto the next phase of the Strategic Framework for Change, so a definite possibility,” said Lieutenant Colonel Tikoduadua. The Strategic Framework for Change was put into action to facilitate major socio-economic reforms and sustainable democracy.
turning to ethanol production and India looking to import more sugar as demand for the product in 2011 increases. Fiji Sugar and General Workers Union general secretary Felix Anthony said despite FSC’s assurances, the union was questioning the late start in maintenance and the re-hiring of retired FSC staff.

$19.2m aid from NZ for USP
New students tour around USP’s Laucala Campus during orientation
IF anything, the $19.2million aid from New Zealand to the University of the South Pacific was more than just a boost to its coffers. For USP vice chancellor, Professor Rajesh Chandra, it signified the confidence donors had in the regional institution. That was of great importance to the man who took over the university three years ago when it was in the red. In 2006, USP recorded a deficit of $5.1m, a deficit of $2.3m in 2007
and another deficit of $1.4m in 2008. It prompted a call from then Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry for the university to live within its means. But three years on, Prof Chandra has turned the financial situation of the institution around. The NZ grant would be spread over three years but it would be injected into the core budget of the university. This means, USP could utilize the funds in the way it wishes. Prof Chandra said part of the funds would be in the implementation of USP’s strategic plan. The plan includes the introduction of Pacific Studies and Ethics, Governance Courses at undergraduate level to enhance the knowledge of their graduates. In addition, climate change courses were also being introduced with another funding from the European Union. For the first time this year, the university introduced forensic accounting as well as courses such as diplomacy and negotiations.

Condolence message from High Commissioner of India
Condolence messages continue to pour in for the passing of the former President and Tui Vuda the late Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda. In expressing his condolences, the High Commissioner of India Vinod Kumar said: “I would like to convey our deepest
condolences on the sad demise of the former President of Fiji Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda,” he said. “I shall be grateful if our words of sympathy are kindly conveyed to the family of late Ratu Josefa Iloilo with our prayer that the departed soul rest in eternal peace.”
Fiji on course for Australian arrivals record Fiji is on target for a record-breaking year from the Australian market; with Tourism Fiji regional director Australia Paresh Pant predicting more than 300,000 Australians will have visited the destination when final 12 month figures are released later this year. Pant’s comments follow the release of Fiji Bureau of Statistics showing 32,101 Australians travelled to the destination in October 2010. The 32,101 figure brings the total of Australian visitor arrivals for the 10-month period to 263,494. This in itself is a six per cent increase over the 248,589 Australian visitor total Fiji achieved across the entire 12-month period January-December 2009.
“Provisional figures received from our Australian industry partners indicate we also performed extremely well in November and December,” said Pant. “If these bear fruit, and we are confident they will, we will definitely cross the 300,000 (mark) for the first time, which is a massive achievement for us.” Australian figures again continued to dominate Fiji’s overall visitor arrival picture with the 32,101 figure constituting a huge 54.14 per cent of the total 59,290 international visitors visiting the destination in October. October figures from other key international source markets also showed growth.

Tradition and culture very much alive
Culture and tradition in Fiji is very much alive says the Director of Information Setaita Natai. Her comments reflect the ‘tens of thousands’ of people from Suva all the way to Viseisei village who sat in reverential silence beside the road as a sign of respect for the former president and Tui Vuda the late Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda. “This is what sets us aside from the rest of the world-our tradition and culture is very much alive in this 21st century,” she said. “Whilst there has been progress towards moving with the world, in this sort of gathering every I-Taukei knows exactly where they belong in their traditional status and ceremonial duties. This has also rubbed off to Fijians as can be witnessed in the procession to Vuda especially for students who sat in total silence while the cortege passed their villages or towns, she said.
It was after almost 7 years before Fiji witnessed another State Funeral following the passing away of the Turaga na Tui Nayau Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. But Natai says the actions of the people have proven that Fiji and her people continue to value and hold their tradition close to their hearts. “We saw that our tradition was alive during Ratu Penaia Ganilau’s funeral and Ratu Mara’s funeral and this time, people have once again proved that we will continue to respect our culture,” Ms Natai said. She also thanked tourists who are currently on holiday here for respecting the funeral cortege whilst witnessing the procession. People were seen wearing black outfits on the side of the road and placed flowers on the road for the cortege. “It was colorful to watch all races coming together,” she added.
Woman punched for staring A 30-YEAR-OLD woman received a suspended sentence for a charge of assault. Mariana Driti, 30, punched a 29-year-old woman of Sukanaivalu Road in Nabua late last month. The incident occurred at the corner of Carnavon Street at around 11pm, police

New Name for Fiji Prisons
The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Services will now be called the Fiji Corrections Services.
THE Fiji Prisons and Corrections Services will now be called the Fiji Corrections Services as Cabinet approved the Prisons
and Corrections (Amendment) Decree 2011, and the Corrections Service Regulation 2011. The laws are effective from January 1, 2011. Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the prison laws were archaic and did not address prisoners' rehabilitation or the corrections philosophy now adopted by jurisdictions worldwide. "The modern focus is the safety and security of prisoners and their in-care and after-care programmes thus providing some degree of certainty in their successful reintegration into the community," he said. He said the inclusion of the word prisons in the name of new prison laws (Prisons and Corrections Act 2006) continued the perception of containment. "It is thus appropriate that the name Prisons and Corrections Act 2006 be replaced by the name Corrections Act 2006 and consequently the Service be known as the Corrections Service," said Mr SayedKhaiyum.
Canadian company gets gold mine contract
A CANADIAN company has been contracted to assist in managing the program at Tuvatu Gold Mines. According to Lion One, the company mining the high grade gold in Tuvatu in the Nadi highlands, Cambria Geosciences, mobilized a field team to the site on January 15 to initiate a program of
surface mapping, trenching and core re-logging and re-sampling of 7,500 to 10,000 meters of the total 60,000 meters of core. The company in a statement to Trading Markets said first phase field program would focus on both new and previously identified targets recognized during management’s and Cambria’s

Waituri, Nausori community gets a free medical check-up
PEOPLE unable to go to the hospital had the opportunity to have themselves medically examined for free. The Nausori Rural Women’s Association held a free medical clinic in Waituri, which is a rural farming community. Association’s assistant secretary, Shabnam Reddy said 110 people, including men, women and babies turned up for the free clinic. “The adults got checked for their blood sugar level, blood pressure, cholesterol level, and had their height and weight measured,” she
said. “We managed to get the services of five nurses from the Nausori Health Centre to check up the residents of Waituri.” “Some people don’t go to the hospital and when they come and get checked at the clinic, they are shocked to find out that they have either diabetes or high blood pressure.” Ms Reddy said people detected with either diabetes or high blood pressure were referred to the Nausori Health Centre. “It was the second clinic organized by the association this year and we plan to have one every month in new areas,” she said. “People should look after their diet and visit the nearest hospital or health centre for regular checks for diabetes and blood pressure.” Ms Reddy said babies who attended the free clinic were in good health and no medical problems were detected in them. She said the association was also involved in organizing the International Women’s Day celebration in Nausori early next month.
comprehensive review of historic data that began in August 2010. In addition to several high-grade targets identified at depth and along strike from the existing lodes that comprise the existing resource base, this review, along with ongoing mapping and prospecting programs conducted by our local geologists, resulted in the discovery of several near surface drill targets that are the focus of the current trenching and surface mapping programs,
the company said. The company said an environmental baseline study has been initiated and permit applications have been submitted with the Mineral Resource Department and the Environmental Review Agency of Fiji to initiate the dewatering process. The company stated that dewatering is expected to commence in April. The gold ores found at Tuvatu are said to be of high grade.

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU: Consumer Alert Pay Attention: Exercise caution when dealing with debt settlement companies
BBB and Credit Counselling Society offer tips to help choose the right company Canadians are becoming more aware of the importance of lowering their personal debt, but here in B.C. consumers are still struggling to keep their credit in check. As a result, many are turning to debt settlement services for help?without taking the necessary steps to check out the company they’re dealing with first. “Offers to help reduce monthly payments and settle your debts can be very enticing,” says Lynda Pasacreta, BBB President and CEO. “But it’s important to understand what the implications are and the track record of the company before entering into any agreement to negotiate your debt.” In the last two months, numerous companies identifying themselves as debt settlement experts or credit counsellors have begun advertising in the Lower Mainland, prompting hundreds of inquiries to BBB. One of those companies, a Florida-based organization called the Vortex Debt Group Inc., has been aggressively promoting their debt negotiation services. However, they have a D rating with the BBB, based on 35 complaints filed against them.
Another California-based company, called Cambridge Life Solutions Inc., has established a mailing address in Vancouver and already generated over 300 inquiries from consumers in just over a month. Both companies offer debt settlement services and require the majority of their fees to be paid in advance of negotiating consumers' personal debt with creditors. Scott Hannah, President and CEO of Credit Counselling Society, a non-profit organization, advises that “consumers need to carefully consider all viable options to resolve their financial difficulties and the long term impact of these options before choosing a course of action.” “Debt settlement is not always in the best interest of the consumer,” says Hannah. “The financial fallout—in the form of damaged credit ratings that take years to rebuild or recourse by creditors—can be devastating.” Before agreeing to allow a third-party to negotiate your debt with creditors, BBB and the Credit Counselling Society recommend consumers ask the following questions to ensure that they're dealing with the right company and getting the best guidance:

Is the company licensed and regulated by a government body in B.C.? In British Columbia, Consumer Protection BC licenses and regulates all credit counselling and debt settlement organizations by issuing debt collection and debt pooler licenses. Consumers can find out if an organization has a good reputation by checking with BBB or Consumer Protection BC. If a company is not regulated, consumers have little recourse if something goes wrong. How does the company and their representative get paid, and do they still get paid if they are unsuccessful at negotiating a debt settlement for you? If a for-profit company insists on payment upfront before reviewing your finances, or pays its representatives on commission, you may not be receiving the best advice on dealing with your debt. Keep in mind that debt negotiating companies cannot guarantee that creditors will accept their proposal to settle your debt for less than half of what you owe. If they are unsuccessful at negotiating on your behalf, find out if they will give you your money back. What percentage of their clients successfully settle their debts with creditors?
Some companies will make claims about the number of clients that they've successfully helped negotiate their debt. It’s important to ask the debt negotiating company to provide proof to validate their claims. Will your creditors work with the company? While some companies may claim numerous success stories and assure you that creditors will work with them, there is no guarantee. If you are maintaining your payments, have a regular income or assets like real estate, your creditors may not accept a proposal to settle your debt. Will the company help you to evaluate all options to resolve your financial difficulties? If the company only offers debt settlement services it may be in your best interests to obtain a second opinion from an organization with professionally trained and accredited credit counsellors. Employers cautioned on unfair dismissal
The Minister for Labour Industrial Relations and Employment Mr Filipe Bole cautioned employers not to dismiss any worker on unwarranted grounds but fully adhere to provisions of the Employment Relations Promulgations when making decisions. This comes after his ministry received rising number of complaints on dismissals, classified as unfair. Mr Bole said workers should not be dismissed for demanding their right wages and entitlements relative to their contracts or collective agreements, either of which should not be below the minimum labour standards under the ERP laws pertaining to minimum wages, overtime pay, holiday pay, maternity leave, sick leave, bereavement leave and any other provisions they are entitled to under the law.
The minister appealed to employers to respect rights of workers and pay them their proper wages and entitlements and to exercise good faith in the resolution of workers’ grievances. Mr Bole encouraged employers to entertain the provision of dismissal only as the last resort after providing the necessary counseling and fair warning to workers. In any event of dismissal, the employer must clearly state reasons for dismissing any worker, including the case for summary dismissal. Mr Bole advised workers that they could raise their employment grievances with the Ministry of Labour’s mediation service if they believed they had been unfairly dismissed, discriminated, sexually harassed or been disadvantaged due to a decision of
PM directs NLTB on age limit for lease payment
The Prime Minister, Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama in his capacity as the Minister for iTaukei Affairs and chairman of the Native Land Trust Board (“NLTB”) has directed the NLTB to distribute all lease monies to all eligible persons 18 years and over. The directive effectively reduces the minimum age for lease money recipients to 18 years from the previously practiced
21 years and over. Under the existing policy and practice of NLTB, all monies received by NLTB are only distributed to eligible persons 21 years and over. The monetary entitlements of those under 21 years of age are held in trust by NLTB. As announced in January, the Bainimarama Government has amended the Native Land Trust (Leases and

the employer, including being forced to join or not to join a trade union. The minister said the privilege of a worker to access the mediation service could only be entertained under the employment relations laws if the worker had exhausted the internal grievance procedure with the employer at the enterprise level. All employees have been reminded to maintain their work ethics and be faithful in performing their duties in order to develop and sustain a decent, productive and safe and healthy working environment. Mr Bole urged employers to thoroughly observe and comply with the provisions of the new Labour laws and accordingly minimize employee grievances by engaging in active good faith and positive dialogue. The ministry, he adds is attentive to the
employees grievances and thus is effectively working on a speedy and fair resolution of all cases. Mr Bole reminded employers that workers were the most important assets of any organization because of their creative potential to significantly add wealth to their goods and services, thereby boosting productivity and profitability, not only at the enterprise but also at national level. Therefore, how an employer develops workers to achieve their full potential is the very aim of the new employment relations laws. The spirit of the new laws is the promotion and enhancement of good faith employment relationships between employers and workers, with dismissal to be entertained only as the very last resort.

Given its policy under the Peoples’ Charter for Change, Peace & Progress to reduce the minimum age from 21 years to 18 in all laws, policies and practices, Government has reviewed the existing NLTB policy of only distributing monies to persons of the age of 21 years and has now decided to reduce the eligibility age to 18 years.
As such, all eligible persons 18 years and over will now be entitled to receive their equal share of the monies distributed by NLTB. For persons under the age of 18 years, the existing policy of the monies being held in trust by NLTB will continue, and these monies will be paid out upon a person reaching 18 years of age. The Prime Minister has further instructed NLTB that this directive on the reduction of eligibility age to 18 years is to be implemented with immediate effect.

Travel with a name you can TRUST Tourist enjoying the night at a beach party
TOURIST numbers to Fiji have grown from last year, said Asia-Pacific STA Travels marketing director Michelle Cox. Ms Cox, who was out on South Seas Island with 85 STA Travel staff from New Zealand and Australia last Saturday, said Fiji had become one of their prime products. The STA Travel staff spent their last night in Fiji in a special way. They had a beach barbecue and warrior dancers awaited them on the shores of South Seas Islands. “After three days of conferencing, this is a great break for us. This is also a great opportunity for most of us because we are selling Fiji and from last year many tourists have shown an interest in coming to Fiji,” said Mrs. Cox. She said they had a brochure dedicated especially for Fiji. “Many of the staff here only knows about Fiji through the experiences of those who came to Fiji. This year we decided to bring them down
and have the conference here. “The main question many of the staff asks, because this is their first time, is if the Fijian exuberance and friendliness is real. I have been to Fiji many times and I have experienced this friendliness the many times I have come and I told them that, yes, it is real. Fijians are a wonderful people.” She said they were expecting sales to increase this year. “We have been working with South Seas Cruises and Awesome Adventures for some time now and we are very confident in our partnership,” she said. STA Travels will also be setting up a trust fund for islanders in the Yasawa Group to help them with their daily needs and educational requirements. “We saw that we could help out and this is the way we are proposing to do it. The trust fund will surely help the villagers,” she said.

JAPANESE MARRIED NAME LAW CHALLENGED Four Japanese women and a man have filed a challenge to a 19th Century law that compels couples to share a surname after marriage. In most cases women give up their family name. A husband can adopt his wife’s name but few men do. The plaintiffs say the law violates Japan’s constitutional guarantee of equal rights in marriage. Conservatives have opposed reform on the grounds that it would undermine family unity. The landmark case has been launched in Tokyo District Court. Kyoko Tsukamoto said that being forced to use her husband’s name officially for more than 50 years was “like having a splinter in my heart”. “I want to die as Kyoko Tsukamoto,” said the retired school teacher who uses her maiden name for private purposes. “I’m happy to file the lawsuit together
with my companions who have the same ambition,” she told a news conference. “It’s going to be a long fight. Please help us.” Emie Kayama, another plaintiff, said that names should be chosen “not by law but by individuals”. “I don’t want my husband to change his surname because I don’t want him to feel the same way I have,” she said. Opinion divided Calls for change have grown as women have increasingly stayed in jobs after marriage. Many have to juggle two names - their maiden name at work and their married name on official documents like passports and credit cards. However, public opinion in Japan has been sharply divided on the issue. In a recent government survey, 37% of those questioned said they supported reforming the civil code, while 35% were against.

Other roles announced included Middleton’s four bridesmaids and William’s two page boys. Middleton’s bridesmaids will be sevenyear-old Lady Louise Windsor, three-year-
old Grace van Cutsem, three-year-old Eliza Lopes and the Hon. Margarita ArmstrongJones, eight. Details about the bridesmaids’ dresses and page boys’ uniforms will be made available on the wedding day, Clarence House said. The couple is due to wed at 11am local time April 29 at Westminster Abbey, in central London. Ms Middleton will travel to Westminster Abbey by car, and after the service the happy couple, will travel to Buckingham Palace in a horse-drawn carriage for a reception. The couple will be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.
PHILADELPHIA TEEN CONFESSES TO BLUDGEONING MUM WHO TOOK AWAY PLAYSTATION
A PHILADELPHIA teen confessed to bludgeoning his sleeping mother when she took away his PlayStation. Kendall Anderson, 16, is accused of hitting his mother, Rashida Anderson, 20 times with a claw hammer after they had a 90-minute argument on the day after Thanksgiving, the media reported. The teen reportedly confessed to Philadelphia police homicide Detective Thorsten Lucke that then he dragged his mother downstairs and attempted to “cremate her” in the kitchen oven. When
that effort was unsuccessful, he said he hit her on the head with a chair leg, dragged her body outside and hid the corpse under debris in an alley behind their home. Lucke read Kendall Anderson’s confession to a Philadelphia Municipal Court judge, who ordered the teen to stand trial for murder, possession of an instrument of crime and abuse of a corpse. Lucke said Anderson expressed remorse for his actions and said, “If I could, I would not do it again. I really miss my mom … she was the only person who cared for me.”

QANTAS FLIGHT BARRED FROM IRAQ AIRSPACE DURING FLIGHT FROM LONDON TO SINGAPORE A QANTAS flight from London to Singapore was stopped from flying into Iraqi air space. A Qantas spokeswoman told the media that Iraq air services would not allow the flight into Iraq air space on Monday as they did not “recognise the authority” who had pre-approved the flight path. The QF32 flight had to divert to Dubai to refuel in order to allow for a different flight path. Qantas said the airline had been flying on this route for some weeks and didn’t know
why this incident had now occurred. The Australian carrier is now liaising with Iraqi authorities to investigate why the plane had been denied entry. The QF32 is the same flight number of the A380 Airbus which suffered an engine explosion flying from Singapore to Sydney on November 4, 2010. The pilot managed to land the plane and nobody was injured in that incident. Qantas is now completely confident Rolls Royce has fixed the engine fault on that jet.
CHINA OVERTAKES JAPAN AS WORLD’S SECOND-BIGGEST ECONOMY
China has overtaken Japan as the world’s second-biggest economy. Japan’s economy was worth $5.474 trillion (£3.414 trillion) at the end of 2010, figures from Tokyo have shown. China’s economy was closer to $5.8 trillion in the same period. Japan has been hit by a drop in exports and consumer demand, while China has enjoyed a manufacturing boom. At its current rate of growth, analysts see China replacing the US as the world’s top economy in about a decade. “It’s realistic to say that within 10 years China will be roughly the same size as the US economy,” said Tom Miller of GK Dragonomics, a Beijing-based economic consultancy. The US economy is currently almost three times the size of the Chinese economy in dollar terms. The UK’s economy is estimated to be the world’s sixth largest. Overseas risk Japan played down the significance of the shift in the economic league table, and the fact that it has been replaced as the secondlargest economy for the first time in more than four decades. “As an economy, we are not competing for rankings but working to improve citizens’ lives,” said Economics Minister Kaoru Yosano. The minister added that China’s booming economy was welcome news for Japan as a neighboring country. China is now Japan’s main trading partner and is increasingly important to companies
such as electronics firm Sony and carmakers like Honda and Toyota. However, Mr Yosano said that Japan needed to watch closely “risks from overseas economies and currency moves”. Negative demand The yen has been strengthening against other currencies, recently touching a 15year high against the dollar, and the fear is that the currency’s gains may hurt foreign demand for Japanese products. World’s 10 biggest economies •US •China •Japan •Germany •France •UK •Italy •Brazil •Canada •Russia Most economists agree that while China as a whole is growing, and the average person is getting wealthier, comparing only the size of its economy to Japan’s does not paint an accurate enough picture. “Most people in China are still poor, more people live in the countryside than in cities,” said Mr Miller of GK Dragonomics. “The average Japanese person is much richer than the average Chinese person.” The International Monetary Fund estimates that GDP per head of the population is almost $34,000 in Japan, while in the People’s Republic of China it is just over $7,500.

HOSNI MUBARAK ‘DEPRESSED, FAINTING’ AS SHOCK OF BEING OUSTED HITS HEALTH
THE health of deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak is deteriorating and he is suffering from psychological distress after being forced from power, officials and media reports said. Ambulances and doctors were seen driving along the private driveway of Mr Mubarak’s mansion in Sharm el-Sheikh and security
guards said that he was unwell. “He has been feeling very unwell ... he is a very, very sick man,” a security guard, who has worked for Mr Mubarak for three years, said. Sameh Shoukry, the Egyptian Ambassador to Washington, said that Mr Mubarak, 82, was “possibly in somewhat bad health”. Two Egyptian newspapers said that the former president was depressed, refusing to take medication and passing out repeatedly. The state of Mr Mubarak’s health had been a secret during his 29 years in power. A newspaper editor was once jailed for questioning his wellbeing. It was known that he had surgery in March last year in Germany to remove an inflamed gall bladder and a benign intestinal tumor.
BRITISH GRANDMOTHER FOUND GUILTY OF SEX WITH DOG
A 42-year-old British woman - who is already a grandmother - has been found guilty by a court of having sex with her family dog. Paula Mangan was photographed having sex with her family’s rottweiler-chow dog, by her boyfriend Lee McCall, 41. Police found a CD of 33 images during a raid on their Liverpool home. Officers also uncovered 61 indecent images of children. Mangan, who has two teenage daughters
and one grandchild, admitted having sex with the animal at the Liverpool Crown Court. Judge Robert Warnock found her guilty of bestiality, and called her a “troubled and damaged individual”. He imposed a twoyear community order with supervision. McCall admitted making indecent images and faces sentence in April. A neighbour said they still own the dog. “It’s disgusting. They seemed a normal family.”
SERVANT TO HANG FOR ‘HOUSE OF HORRORS’ MURDER
India’s Supreme Court ordered a domestic servant to be hanged for raping and killing a teenage girl in a serial murder case involving at least 19 dead children that shocked the country. Two judges backed the death sentence handed out by lower courts to Surinder Koli for murdering Rimpa Halder, 14, in 2005 at a bungalow on the outskirts of New Delhi that became known as the “House of Horrors”. Koli, 39, has been found guilty of
three murders and faces 16 other cases of murder that he allegedly committed in his employer’s house between 2004 and 2007. Most victims were girls from a nearby village. Koli had sex with his dead victims and also ate some body parts. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began a probe when 69 plastic bags with human remains were dredged out from sewers around the property in the suburb of Noida. “In our opinion, this case falls in the rarest of rare category and no mercy can be shown to him,” the twojudge bench said in its final order, describing the crimes as “horrifying and barbaric”. Bungalow owner Maninder Singh Pandher was also charged with first degree murder in the same case but he was acquitted in 2009 and now faces homicide charges.

CONNECTICUT MAN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO FATAL STABBING OVER FARTING TAUNTS
A CONNECTICUT man pleaded not guilty to stabbing to death a man and injuring three others at a party after a dispute over flatulence. Marc Higgins, 21, supposedly caused offence to a woman at the party on January 15, eventually causing her to slap him. Higgins “was farting throughout the evening,” said one partygoer at the time. Higgins then left the party and returned 45
minutes later with a butcher knife, another knife and a BB gun. He then allegedly fatally stabbed acquaintance Matthew Walton, also 21. Higgins is also accused of stabbing two other men and a woman. According to an investigation report, Higgins said he did it to show people they should not make fun of him. He is scheduled to return to court on April 4.
LARRY THE CAT MOVES INTO UK PM’S HOME TO TAKE ON THE RATS
BRITISH prime minister David Cameron welcomed a four-year-old cat with a “very strong predatory drive” to tackle a rat problem at his official London residence. Larry, who was rescued from the capital’s Battersea Dogs and Cats Home animal shelter, is the latest cat to serve at 10 Downing Street. The short-haired tabby’s arrival came after rats were spotted during two TV news broadcasts from outside the front door of the residence. A spokesman for Cameron said that while he was reluctant to get a cat at first, he had
“certainly been persuaded that it was a good idea.” “Whilst in Battersea’s care, Larry showed a very strong predatory drive and enjoyed playing with toy mice,” the spokesman said. The former official No. 10 cat, Humphrey - named after a character in the British political satire Yes Minister - served under three prime ministers: Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair. He was controversially retired shortly after Blair moved into Downing Street in 1997, with rumours suggesting his wife Cherie was behind the eviction, and died in 2006.

MAN SOLD BOGUS AIRLINE TICKETS
A Toronto man was arrested Thursday for allegedly selling fraudulent airline tickets, leaving unsuspecting victims stranded at airports without valid tickets. Peel Regional Police alleged a man operating under the online business of Super Asia Travel Inc. sold bogus airline tickets to victims. When victims arrived at the airport to check in with their tickets and board their overseas flights, they discovered their tickets were invalid and would not be honored, according to investigators. “A lot of people travelling just before Christmas were left stranded. When they got to the airport to board their flights, their tickets had already been cancelled by the airline,” said Det. Jim Dolan, of the
Peel force’s fraud squad. The majority of flights sold were to India and Pakistan and South Asia and more than 100 victims paid a combined total which exceeds $300,000 for tickets, said police. “All transactions took place online or over the phone. There were never any face-toface meetings,” Dolan said. Investigators alleged a man using fraudulent identification incorporated a business in April 2010 under the name Super Asia Travel Incorporated. The company placed ads in the last half of 2010 in South Asian newspapers and on the Internet. Talha Choudry, 34, of no fixed address, faces numerous fraud charges.

Travelling to the United States could soon cost Canadians a fee if a proposal from U.S. President Barack Obama’s draft federal budget is adopted.
The budget U.S. President Barack Obama submitted to Congress on Monday proposes to slap a $5.50 fee on every visitor from Canada who travels to the U.S. by air or by sea. The fee would not apply to visitors arriving in private vehicles. Currently, visitors from Canada, Mexico and a number of Caribbean countries are exempt from “passenger inspection fees.” It’s an exemption these countries have enjoyed since 1997. But Obama’s 2012 draft budget includes a legislative proposal to lift those exemptions — a move that a supporting document from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimates would bring in an extra $110 million a year. Revenue from the charges would be used to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s inspection functions, the document says. According to Statistics Canada, more than 16.3 million passengers took trans-border flights between Canada and the United States
in 2009. So far, the proposal to end the exemption for visitors from Canada is just that — a proposal. Harper, Obama negotiate security perimeter The reporter called the president’s budget “a first step” that will be debated, dissected, and possibly altered substantially, even though it has currently caught Canadians’ attention. “Whatever comes out at the end of the budget-making process is often very, very different from how it starts,” she said, adding that it’s possible Canadians may not end up having to pay a cent of the proposed $5.50 fee. The submission of the draft federal budget to Congress comes after a recent meeting between Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in which the two leaders discussed ways to improve border flow and trade. “Many people will argue that slapping a fee on Canadians who travel across the border in record number is just not going to help border flow at all,” Bonner said. Canada and the U.S. are in talks about establishing a national security perimeter. The proposed inspection fees could come up as a sticking point during those negotiations. The 2012 budget pledged $1.1 trillion US in deficit savings over the next decade through spending cuts and tax increases. Obama is projecting the U.S. budget deficit will hit an all-time high of $1.65 trillion in 2011 — narrowing to $1.1 trillion in 2012.

ALBERTA ‘NOT HAPPY’ WITH WORKER VISA CUTS
Industry officials in Alberta are questioning the federal government’s plan to cut back on visas for skilled workers, saying the province’s expanding economy needs more employees. “We’re not happy with it,” said Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach. “I know that they are reflecting some of the issues in Ontario. But we are in a completely different position.” According to government documents, Ottawa plans to cut skilled worker visas by 20 per cent, a move that would shut out 14,000 workers. Peter Stalenhoef, president of PCL Constructors Ltd., said the government’s plan comes as companies like his are getting busier. “In 2009 we were able to rely on workers from Eastern Canada for a large measure to fill the hole. And the reality is that Eastern Canada is expected to be very busy,” Stalenhoef said. “At the same time we’re going to be busy here in Western Canada, so where are the workers going to come from?” Many who come to Canada to work in construction arrive through the temporary foreign worker program,
but industry officials say they are still concerned about the government’s plan because of the message it could send. “If it’s an overall indication of where the federal government is going with immigration visas then certainly we would object to that,” said Heidi Harris, a spokeswoman for Alberta’s Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association. “We have an aging work force. We have more people retiring and leaving the workforce than we have coming in.” Ontario’s Immigration Minister Eric Hoskins also said the drop in skilled workers could harm the province’s economy. He said Ontario will ask Ottawa to reverse the decision as the province negotiates a new immigration agreement this month. “If true, this is a huge cut and it’s obviously of great concern to Ontario,” Hoskins said. “I would say that the growth of Ontario’s economy is dependent upon the arrival of talented new Canadians who can come to this province and put their skills to work for our economy. So it’s very disconcerting.”

There are always many things to keep in mind during wedding if you want it to be near perfect. So in order not to end up looking garish on wedding photos try to avoid some of the following wedding makeup mistakes. But first keep in mind some basic rules: do not overdo, if you are having a classic wedding you most likely wear a white wedding dress, which requires light or mildly contrasting makeup look, so it means no glitter, not chunky one at least. A couple of rhinestones are acceptable but only if they match makeup. Opt for classy look and matte look in order to look good in pictures and on the event. Wedding makeup mistake #1 Not all makeup looks you can find in the glossy magazine will suit your eye color, shape, and size. Instead find a trusted professional who will help you choose a
flattering makeup look that will match your face and wedding dress and accessories. On the other hand, if you don’t usually wear makeup try it beforehand and if you still feel uncomfortable just freshen up before your wedding. Clear mascara and lip balm will help you enhance your natural beauty. Wedding makeup mistake #2 Do not make your bridesmaids wear the same makeup. It will look unflattering because everyone has different eye color, complexion and skin tone. Again the help of the professional will help you create the looks that will flatter your wedding party and keep them in one theme. Also do not force your next of kin or friends wear makeup if they are not used to it. Why create additional stress for them and you? Wedding makeup mistake #3 Even if you asked for a long-stay makeup don’t ditch your supply beauty tools in case if you cry or sweat and will need a quick makeup fix. Take blotting tissues, powder, and lipstick with you. Wedding makeup mistake #4 Ditch lip gloss as it is sticky and if you wear bangs you’ll constantly have to tear them from your lips. Not a nice perspective, right? Stick to creamy or matte lipstick. Wedding makeup mistake #5 Over dew makeup will make you look greasy on the pictures. Add some highlight to the cheekbones, but go with matte look as your dewy makeup will grow greasy with all the dancing, especially if it’s a warm season.

10 TIPS FOR BREAST CANCER PREVENTION 1. Avoid becoming overweight. Obesity raises the risk of breast cancer after menopause, the time of life when breast cancer most often occurs. Try to maintain a body-mass index under 25. 2. Eat healthy to avoid tipping the scale. Embrace a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in sugared drinks, refined carbohydrates and fatty foods. Eat lean protein such as fish or chicken breast and eat red meat in moderation, if at all. Eat whole grains. Choose vegetable oils over animal fats. 3. Keep physically active, even when begun later in life. It reduces overall breast-cancer risk by about 10 percent to 30 percent. All it takes is moderate exercise like a 30-minute walk five days a week. 4. Drink little or no alcohol. Alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. 5. Avoid hormone replacement therapy. Menopausal hormone therapy increases risk for breast cancer. If you must take hormones to manage menopausal symptoms, avoid those that contain progesterone
and limit their use to less than three years. “Bioidentical hormones” and hormonal creams and gels are no safer than prescription hormones and should also be avoided. 6. Consider taking an estrogenblocking drug. Women with a family history of breast cancer or who are over age 60 should talk to their doctor about the pros and cons of estrogen-blocking drugs such as tamoxifen and raloxifene. 7. Don’t smoke. Research suggests that long-term smoking is associated with increased risk of breast cancer in some women. 8. Breast-feed your babies for as long as possible. Women who breast-feed their babies for at least a year in total have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer later. 9. Participate in a research study. 10. Get fit and support breast cancer research at the same time. Regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Ascend some of the world’s most breathtaking peaks while raising vital funds for and awareness of breast cancer research.

TIGHTER REUNIFICATION VISA LAWS FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS
Taking in more parents and grandparents of working newcomers in Canada would mean a reduction in the number of skilled workers, refugees, orphans and adopted children allowed in annually, according to the minister of immigration and citizenship. Jason Kenney came under fire Monday for reducing the number of family reunification visas to be handed out this year to parents and grandparents of newcomers — from 16,000 in 2010 to 11,000 this year. “When people choose to immigrate to Canada, there is no right or guarantee that they will be able to bring all members of their extended family,” Kenney said. “To be able to do so is a privilege, and it’s only exercised on a limited basis because we have to ensure that immigration is serving our national interest.” Kenney said his “number one objective” is
to attract skilled workers to Canada to take jobs Canadians don’t want or aren’t trained to do. “There are trade-offs, and this government is focused on the priorities of Canadians which are economic growth and prosperity,” he said during Question Period Monday. “We need more newcomers working and paying taxes and contributing to our health care system. That is the focus of our immigration system.” But critics aren’t buying it and warned that restricting the number of parents and grandparents who can come to Canada to join family members here may deter those same skilled labourers the government is keen to attract. “Many of the skilled immigrants we want to come, come because they believe they can, in fact, sponsor their relatives,” said
‘PLAYSTATION’ PHONE COMING TO CANADA, U.S.
Rogers to carry new smartphone in Canada The first “PlayStation phone” is coming to Canada and the U.S. in the spring. The Xperia Play phone will have a big touch screen and a pad that slides out to reveal control buttons similar to those on a Sony PlayStation Portable. The phone marks a change in strategy for Sony and a coup for Sony Ericsson, which has been trying to get its phones back into the U.S. market. The phone looks similar to the PSP Go, a version of the PlayStation Portable released in 2009. The Play phone will run Google Inc.’s Android operating system and play modified PlayStation games that won’t run on other phones. It’s the first time Sony has allowed its PlayStation games to run on hardware not made by Sony. The licence isn’t exclusive to Sony Ericsson, so other phone makers could follow, but Sony Ericsson will have a substantial head start. Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg
demonstrated the phone in Barcelona, a day ahead of the opening of the Mobile World Congress trade show there. He said he didn’t know what the phone will cost. Sony Ericsson is a joint venture of Sony Corp. of Japan and LM Ericsson AB of Sweden. They merged their phone-making businesses in 2001, and have faced calls to make phones that take advantage of Sony’s strength in game consoles since then. Recently, touch screen phones, especially Apple Inc.’s iPhone, have become big game platforms in their own right, thanks to their large screens and intuitive controls. Rogers Communications Inc. said that it would carry the new device, which will be available in Canada in the spring of 2011. The communications giant did not provide pricing details or an exact release date. Verizon Wireless is the largest U.S. wireless carrier, but it hasn’t carried Sony Ericsson phones for several years. Last year, Sony Ericsson dropped the Symbian operating system, which is largely unknown in the U.S., in favour of Android, with the aim of penetrating the U.S. smart-phone market. Sony Ericsson’s worldwide sales have continued to slide, but it’s now able to sell more expensive phones, stemming some of the revenue decline.
Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Bob Rae. “If they find that they can’t, that’s going to affect their choice of country.” New Democrat immigration critic Olivia Chow said the government’s position on parents is “downright cruel,” and said it’s wrong to say parents and grandparents drain the system. In fact, Chow said, all immigrants need to first pass a rigorous medical exam to prove they are healthy, and also they can’t collect old age security for 10 years after they arrive. “There’s absolutely no drain whatsoever. In fact, they contribute to the Canadian economy by eating, paying taxes throughout the GST and PST, buying things. They help the economy,” Chow said. She and Amir Attaran, a University
of Ottawa law professor, held a press conference Monday to criticize the government’s immigration policy as it relates to parents. While family reunification applications for adopted children, and even relatives such as uncles and aunts, are processed in days — for spouses and dependent children it’s a month — parents and grandparents can sometimes wait up to 10 years for their applications to be approved. Attaran, whose own parents are waiting for approval to move to Canada, filed a lawsuit against the government last summer that is currently before the Canadian Human Rights Commission. What’s more, Attaran said the government is discriminating against immigrants based on what country they’re from, which he said is “illegal.”
$50M LOTTERY DISPUTE IN ONTARIO RESOLVED
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has announced a temporary resolution to a dispute between two different groups of coworkers over a $50-million Lotto Max jackpot, the largest single-ticket win in the province’s history. Originally, a group of 19 Bell Canada coworkers in east Toronto validated the Dec. 31 winning ticket on Jan. 3. The ticket had been bought through an office pool. But then a group of 11 other co-workers came forward to say they deserved a share as well, and hired a lawyer to represent them. The case has been in limbo since then. The group of 19 have each agreed to for now accept a one-thirtieth share of the winnings until the claim raised by the other 11 Bell workers can be evaluated. Instead of collecting $2.6 million on Monday, each of the original 19 claimants will receive a share of $1.67 million. The remainder of the winnings, about $18.3

million, will be paid to a court, which will then determine who of the 11 claimants in the other group have a legitimate claim. Any part of the $18.3 million that hasn’t been awarded to members of the second group will be given back to the original claimants. The OLG has investigated the original group of 19, and has determined that they are all rightful claimants to a portion of the prize. They picked up their cheques at a news conference Monday. The media reports the workers were happy, despite the uncertainty surrounding the rest of the prize. They were trying to keep their chins up despite the controversy still surrounding their win. One of the Bell employees told the reporter in January that there have been only 19 people in their office pool since it started in December, and that the claims from the second group have cast a shadow over their earlier joy at winning. Nathalie Damianidis, who organized the office pool, was one of the 19 who collected a share of the winnings on Monday. She said she’s confident the office pool was managed correctly. “I think I did everything by the book,” said Damianidis. “I had my book there on my desk it was there for everyone to see.”

Just for Kids K to K connect the dots
Ask a Pediatrician: Toilet Training Boys
Q. My son is four years old and refuses to go on the toilet. He did it twice last year on his own so I know he knows how, but he seems to want to go back to babyhood. He is very smart in every other way but he won’t use the potty. Any suggestions? He gets really upset if I try to put him on the toilet. -Joanne A. This can be a really frustrating issue for parents and can sometimes seem like it's easier to get it wrong than right. Some boys (boys usually train later than girls) are just
not ready – even at age four – and others are engaging in a power struggle with their parents that’s played out around the training issue. Either way, I think it helps to remember that only he can decide when he's ready to consistently use the toilet. Your job is to show him how (which you've already done) and to respond positively when he makes progress towards training. What we know is that kids who feel “forced” often dig their heels in and delay even more. Some ideas to help encourage his progress: •Make his bathroom space comfortable and interesting. Try keeping a box of fun books handy for him to look at when he’s in the room. •Point out friends or cousins of his who are training and accomplishing "big boy" tasks. (Seeing others praised can be a big motivator). •Give positive praise for the strides he does make; let him know you are proud of him growing up. Since children generally want to please, these ideas can often help jump-start training. That said, sometimes it takes backing off a bit and waiting for signs that he's ready. Good Luck!
Playing sports is a lot of fun. Getting hurt is not. Take these five steps to prevent injuries so you can stay in the game: Wear protective gear, such as helmets, protective pads, and other gear. Warm up and cool down. Know the rules of the game. Watch out for others. Don’t play when you’re injured. Let’s find out more about each of these. Wear Protective Gear Protective gear is anything you wear that helps keep you from getting hurt. The gear you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets are the most common protective gear. They protect your all-important head while you’re playing football, hockey, baseball, softball, biking, skateboarding, and inline skating, just to name a few! Make sure you’re wearing the right helmet for your sport. For instance, don’t wear your baseball batting helmet when you’re playing football! Your helmet should fit snugly but comfortably, and if it has a strap - like a bike
helmet does - you need to fasten it. Otherwise, it will fall off when you need it most. Other sports require eye protection, mouth guards, pads, wrist, elbow, and knee guards, and a protective cup (for boys only). And don’t forget your feet. Cleats are worn in football, baseball, softball, and soccer. These shoes have special rubber or plastic points on the soles to help your feet grip the ground when you run around. Talk with your parents or your coach to know what gear you need. Then wear that gear whenever you’re practicing or playing. Warm Up It’s not a good idea to just bolt on to the field and start playing. You shouldn’t even start stretching until you’re a little warmed up. So take a light jog to get loosened up and ready to play. Doing some stretching also can get you prepared to hit the field. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up your muscles and practicing a sport help keep you safe, too. Warm-ups that last 15 to 30 minutes and include slow, gradual stretching help lengthen your muscles and increase your blood flow and muscle temperature. That way, your muscles are ready to go and are much less likely to get hurt. ... CONTINUED NEXT WEEK
... CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK Help From Grown-Ups
When you’re trying to learn these skills, you’re going to need some help from parents and other grown-ups, like teachers. But the trick is to understand that it’s not good for them to do the work for you. Someday, you’ll be older — and in high school or college — and you’ll need to do stuff without their help. Here are two lists. One gives examples of stuff it’s OK to have grown-ups help you with. The other is a list of stuff grown-ups should not be doing for you. Adults and teachers should: •help teach you new stuff •answer your questions about what you’ve learned or what the assignment is •provide a quiet environment where you can focus •provide the supplies you need to get the job done •check your work and help you fix mistakes •give you tips on getting organized and staying focused •help you figure out where to keep things in your room •give you some kid-sized jobs to do around the house •let you help them with things in the
classroom and at home Adults and teachers should not: •tell you what the answers are to homework questions •do key parts of an assignment for you such as research or writing •correct mistakes for you •organize your work, backpack, or locker •have to remind you a million times to do the things you’re supposed to do •clean your room for you (sorry!) As you grow, you will be responsible for more and more of the work yourself. If you pay attention to how your parents and teachers talk you through a homework assignment, you’ll be able to do it for yourself when the time comes — and that time is soon. Good grades aren’t the only payoff. The more tasks you can do well on your own, the better you’ll feel about yourself This goes for stuff you’re learning how to do for yourself at home, too. Sometimes, students take too long to get started, put off the homework, or have trouble focusing because they don’t understand what they’re supposed to be doing or don’t think they can do it well. You need help from teachers and parents for this. It’s normal to be worried about what will happen if you fail, but try to trust yourself and give it your best. If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to keep asking for help. Tell parents or teachers what the problem is. Some kids have problems with attention, which can make it tougher to organize, focus, and get it done. But they, too, can and should use this 1-2-3 method to get better at completing tasks. Help from grown-ups can be a little boost that helps you get ready to do it on your own. Who knows? You might even be able to help your parents. Many grown-ups struggle with doing complicated tasks like how to plan a whole week’s worth of dinners. If your mom or dad is faced with one of these tough tasks, you know what advice to give: 1. Get organized. 2. Stay focused. 3. Get it done!

Election Chaos
By: Asuad Ali Sr. Sports Writer
“Flaws in the system” Adrakar Outgoing vice president of the Fijian Soccer League, Parveen Adrakar says amends to electoral system is necessary to avoid ongoing chaos to run for the office. His comments come following the frenzied return to his nomination seeking a re-election during Sunday’s annual general meeting. Adrakar told times weekly sport Wednesday, that election returning officer, Jagdish Dayal on the behest of the secretary, Mohammed Faroon and the treasure, Rosie Gopal advised him of his invalid nomination. The incumbent was in good standing with the league, it’s the two who nominated him were the delinquents. Adrakar was surprised to hear the names of Aten Narayan (Tanoa F.C) and Suresh Chand (Naitasiri S.C) singled out non-renewals to their membership and so his nomination was no good. “Both Narayan and Chand were shocked at the news. Over ten dollars.” “This is a nasty case of deterrent. How ridiculous, there’s got to be some standard here,” Adrakar said. “I am furious the way the association has conducted itself. And when does someone know his membership is up for renewal. He questioned, whose job is it to see the members are in compliance with the rules?
If there’s one, someone’s asleep at the switch for sure. Adrakar had spoken to a hand full of delegates after told he’d lost his nomination bid, they say they had always paid the dues before the meetings convened. “No pay, no privilege is the work of the bad governance,” said an irate Adrakar. He recalls 2 years ago then secretary, Bobby Singh and vice president Shaukat Ali (Karavi) were the victims of the same conspiracy when they were declared persona non grata. One of the two had reportedly declared his candidacy for the presidency. “It’s an attempt to block those who they feel pose a threat to the throne, that’s all to it, it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. Every election year this increasingly incensed attempt surfaces otherwise there’s no mention of financial membership. Adrakar was one of few clean senior executives to come out of the old Fiji Soccer Association of British Columbia that had remained at the highest level in Fijian soccer. A 30 year unblemished service record until now. He urges delegates to take the elected officials to task and get them to fix the flaws in the current system. The AGM is this Sunday at the Newton public library in Surrey.

Jason Brilz Steps in To Face Phil Davis at UFC 129 in Toronto
Phil Davis finally has a new opponent for UFC 129 in Toronto and he’ll now face Jason Brilz in a light heavyweight bout on the card. Davis was originally scheduled to face Matt Hamill on the April card, but the UFC opted to pull the former “Ultimate Fighter” competitor to face Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in May instead, leaving the former NCAA champion without an opponent.
He’s opponent-less no more. Sources close to the negotiations confirmed the bout to MMAWeekly.com on Thursday with verbal agreements in place, and bout agreements likely to follow. MMAJunkie.com first reported the rumored bout. Jason Brilz (18-3-1) returns to action in the first time in almost a year after suffering injuries that kept him out of his last scheduled fight. The
Nebraska native has gone 3-2 during his time with the UFC, and enters the Toronto fight card coming off a very controversial loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in his last bout. It’s unclear at this time what slot the fight between Davis and Brilz will occupy as far as television goes, but the UFC is expected to make a formal announced about the card in the coming weeks.

UFC stadium event in Vancouver possible
Toronto’s success has opened the door to bigger venues
UFC Canada president Tom Wright was in Vancouver to negotiate the mixed martial arts promoter’s return to the city this summer.
An Ultimate Fighting Championship event at B.C. Place Stadium could one day be reality. UFC Canada president Tom Wright admits the organization sees big stadium shows as a viable option after the mixed martial arts organization managed to sell out 55,000 seats in Toronto’s Rogers Centre for UFC 129 last week. “Toronto has demonstrated that there are places in the world where we can put on a show in a stadium,” said Wright, in Vancouver to negotiate the UFC’s return to Vancouver in June. “[B.C.
Place] is quite possible. We only ever started discussing it after the success in Toronto.” But first, Wright is focused on bringing the UFC back to Rogers Arena. The home of the Canucks hosted the sold-out UFC 115 last June, and it’s been reported that a return visit could take place June 11 and feature heavyweight Shane Carwin. “It’s not signed, sealed and delivered yet,” said Wright. “We’re still working through the necessary issues so we’re not in a positive we can announce anything
yet. But we’re confident we’ll be back.” UFC 131 would likely be the last event held under the city’s two-year pilot of professional mixed martial arts, which was put in place December 2009. Wright plans to lobby the provincial government to regulate the sport after the test period ends. “We will have a deep conversation with the province,” he said. “The province doesn’t have an athletic commission when most across the country do. You want to be regulated and grow the sport, and that requires oversight.”
Roop Signs New Deal, New Fights for “TUF” UFC 129 and UFC Fight Night
The UFC has made some moves over the last few days that may have not gotten much
notice with all of the other happenings in the word of mixed martial arts. Undefeated Phil Davis (8-0) was recently left without an opponent at UFC 129 when Matt Hamill was pulled from their fight. Hamill, according to MMAJunkie, is being inserted into Thiago Silva’s spot in a bout against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 130. MMAJunkie is now reporting that Davis does have a fight on the UFC 129 card. He will be facing Jason Brilz on April 29th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on a fight
Canucks’ Kevin Bieksa injured
Defensemen on the Western Conferenceleading Vancouver Canucks continue to drop like flies. The latest is Kevin Bieksa, who has been ruled out with a left foot injury. Bieksa was hurt blocking a shot Tuesday
in Minnesota, but finished the game before tests Wednesday revealed an injury. The Canucks haven’t revealed the extent of the injury, or how long Bieksa will be out -- according to some media reports, up to a month -- but they called up rookie Evan Oberg from the American Hockey League to take his place in Nashville on Thursday night. The Canucks are already missing defensemen Dan Hamhuis (concussion), Keith Ballard (sprained MCL), Alexander Edler (back surgery) and rookie Lee Sweatt (broken foot). Bieksa and Hamhuis were the Canucks’ top defense pairing. Canucks coach Alain Vigneault indicated this week that Hamhuis might soon begin to skate.
card that will be headlined by a Georges St. Pierre versus Jake Shields welterweighttitle bout. George Roop, despite having gone 1-2-1 in his last four fights, has inked a new, five-fight deal with the UFC, according to MMAFighting. The first fight in Roop’s new deal will be against Josh Grispi on June 4th on The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale card, which is set to take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Nik Lentz and Waylon Lowe have been added to the Ultimate Fight Night 24 card,
according to MMADiehards. That card is set for March 26th at Seattle’s Key Arena and will be headlined by a bout between Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Lastly, MMAJunkie is reporting that “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins will face Jeremy Stephens on The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale card. The fight will mark the first UFC competition for Brookins since winning the “TUF” Season 12 crown, while Stephens’ last fight was a third-round knockout of Marcus Davis at UFC 125.
Canucks staying put on trade talks
No wonder Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis has never had a trade conversation about Ian White. He has other, better defencemen joining his National Hockey League team. Canuck Keith Ballard, who sprained his knee five games ago, should be playing next week. Dan Hamhuis has started light workouts, and surgeries to Andrew Alberts (wrist) and Alex Edler (back) were successful. So Gillis doesn’t have to make a trade, like the media-imagined one for White. He merely has to be patient. “I’m confident that all of them will be back,” Gillis said Wednesday. “With Dan, you’re always reluctant to discuss any kind of prognosis when it comes
to a concussion, so I’m not going to do that. He seems to be progressing well, but there’s always an element of uncertainty. “Keith seems to be a little bit ahead of schedule and doing quite well. Andrew’s surgery was successful and we fully expect him to be 100 per cent come playoff time. And Alex Edler is moving along on schedule. There haven’t been any setbacks or hiccups.” And since only Edler is on long-term injured reserve, getting the defencemen back on the roster and under the salary cap won’t be a problem for the Canucks. That’s another reason Gillis may do nothing ahead of the Feb. 28 trade deadline.
South Africa beat Fiji 24-14
South Africa beat Fiji 24-14 in the Cup Final on Sunday afternoon to capture the championship. It was the team’s first rugby sevens tournament title in two years. “It’s been ages since then and a lot of these guys haven’t experienced anything like that,” said South African captain Kyle Brown. “It’s fantastic for them and I want them to keep this feeling in their heart every time they go out there.” South Africa overcame a tough road to the title game by beating perennial powers Australia and England. Chris Dry and Cecil Afrika scored early tries in the Cup Final to give South Africa a 14-0 lead, but it was the squad’s defense that clinched the victory. Fiji struggled to find lanes to move the ball throughout the match. “It’s one of the fundamentals of the game,”
Brown said. “You can attack as well as you can, but if you can’t stop people from running at your line you’re going to lose at the end of the day.” USA could have used plenty of excuses for its poor performance against Canada, not the least of which was losing three of its players to injury — including Bokhoven, who tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the year — during Saturday’s games. Paul Emerick scored two tries in the match, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early 14-0 Canada lead. “We believe that we’re definitely a league above Canada,” Caravelli said. “Not to take anything away from them, but when you put 31 points on them a week ago and then you let them win; we should have closed out the game.” Caravelli shared positive thoughts on the weekend experience as a whole. In its second year in Las Vegas, the USA Sevens Rugby Tournament announced a two-day attendance of 49,909. That’s an increase of 13,000 people from last year’s event. The tournament is scheduled to come to Las Vegas again next year with an option for 2013. “Hopefully we can build on this for next year, the fans will continue to grow and we’ll attract more athletes,” Caravelli said.
FIJI LOST THE FINAL
TOP rugby coach Reverend Joji Rinakama has noted a major improvement in the performance of the Digicel national sevens team. After losing in the quarter-final of the Wellington Sevens last week, the Iliesa Tanivula-coached side bounced back strongly in the Las Vegas Sevens but lost to South Africa in the final. “There was a big improvement in the Las Vegas Sevens,” Naitasiri Rugby Union head coach Rinakama said. “I’m happy with the way the boys played in the quarter-final and the semi-final against New Zealand. “It was a good game against New Zealand. “Fiji’s defensive play was very good, that’s where they managed to turn over possession

and score tries,” he said. Rinakama said he was not able to watch the final against South Africa because he was busy with the Naitasiri team trials. “Somebody told me Fiji lost the final. I congratulate the boys for making the final. Most of them are new and they played well,” he said. Fiji and Samoa are tied on third spot in the 2010/ 2011 HSBC IRB Sevens World Series with 64 points while England and New Zealand are dominating with 80 points. Fiji has failed to win any tournament in the first and second legs of competition. The next leg will be played in Hong Kong (March 25-27) and Australia (April 2-3).
WWE Raw: Finally, The Rock has come back ... to host WrestleMania XXVII It was not all that surprising when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was revealed on Raw Monday night as the guest host for WrestleMania XXVII, but even though a lot of fans expected it, the moment he walked on stage was incredibly dramatic nonetheless. The Rock, making his first appearance in a WWE ring since his final match at WrestleMania XX in 2004, looked as if he had never left. “The Great One” slipped into character with the greatest of ease, as he rattled off all of his trade mark catch phrases and displayed his distinct mannerisms. Rock, with his head completely shaved and sporting a heavily muscled physique, not only proved that he can still captivate an audience like very few – if any – ever have in the history of the business, but he also showed that when someone of his magnitude shows up, standard restrictions no longer apply.

Toronto UFC smashes sales record
The final tally is in and the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s upcoming event in Toronto has officially smashed its former attendance record. Fight fans scooped up a whopping 55,000 tickets over the weekend for UFC 129, which still more than two months away. When officials initially announced the UFC’s first ever stadium show, the plan called for 42,000 seats at the Rogers Centre with eight giant screens to ensure every fan has a great view of the action. It was a lofty goal considering the UFC had previously held its shows in arenas and it was almost double its former attendance record. At UFC 124 last year, 23,152 fans packed the Bell Centre in Montreal. But when advance tickets went on sale last Thursday, UFC officials knew almost instantly they made the right choice. Fight fans, anxious for the UFC to come to Toronto since the provincial government finally lifted its ban on mixed martial arts, snatched up 42,000 tickets in just seven minutes. Thousands more tickets were made available on Friday for the second day of advance ticket sales.
Again, those tickets were sold out in four minutes. By the time the first official day of ticket sales wrapped up Saturday, the UFC had sold about 13,000 more tickets than it initially had planned to sell. And plenty of fans have since contacted the media to express their disappointment with not being able to buy tickets because the event was sold-out. It helped that the UFC put together an awesome card for April 30, loaded with exciting Canadian fighters and a co-main event. The first main event has fan favourite George St. Pierre, from Montreal, putting his welterweight championship on the line against American Jake Shields. The second has Mark Hominick, of Thamesford, Ont., trying to take the featherweight title from Brazilian Jose Aldo. The gate for UFC 129 is expected to bring in nearly $11 million, which would shatter yet another record. The highest gate previously was $5.6 million at UFC 66 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Harold Snepsts next receipient of Canucks’ Ring of Honour
Harold Snepsts was named the fourth member of the Vancouver Canucks Ring of Honour on Wednesday. The mustachioed-one will be honoured on Monday, March 14th in advance of Vancouver’s game against the Minnesota Wild. The former Canucks defenceman joins Orland Kurtenbach, Kirk McLean and Thomas Gradin, who were unveiled earlier this season in the 40th anniversary initiative.
Snepsts was 59th overall by the Canucks in 1974 and went on to play 12 seasons with the club. He holds the franchise record for games played (781) and penalty minutes (1,446). The Edmonton native was a big part of Vancouver’s run to the Stanley Cup final in 1982 and finished with 44 career playoff games with Vancouver, recording one goal and 10 points to go along with 99 penalty minutes. The two-time all-star was also a recipient of the Fred J. Hume Award, given annually to the Canucks unsung hero, and selected four times as winner of the Babe Pratt Trophy, awarded to the Canucks most outstanding defenceman. He’s also a member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame (2006) and BC Hockey Hall of Fame (2004). Snepsts currently serves as an amateur scout with the club. The Ring of Honour was launched this season and is an ongoing initiative to celebrate those Canucks who have made a lasting impact on the franchise. Candidates are selected by an advisory committee including former player Stan Smyl, Hockey Hall of Fame broadcaster, Jim Robson, and Norm Jewison, a former Canucks staff member of over 30 years.
NBA team in Vancouver
Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini would like to bring the NBA back to town and he has set his sights on the troubled New Orleans Hornets, according to a reports. Canucks Sports and Entertainment chairman Francesco Aquilini has been seeking a portable franchise for five years that could be bought for a bargain and moved to Vancouver, says the report. He is allegedly looking at the Hornets, who are currently owned by the NBA and are a prime candidate for relocation.
Aquilini did not respond to requests for comment from the Globe. NBA commissioner David Stern told ESPN earlier this week that he has had “visits” from a potential ownership group from Vancouver and he went out of his way to praise the management of the Canucks. “I have regrets about both Seattle and Vancouver,” Stern added, referring to the circumstances in which the two Pacific Northwest markets lost their franchsies to Oklahoma City and Memphis respectively.

Rani ignores Yash Raj
Expect the unexpected in Bollywood. An incident on Saturday night sent shock waves in the film industry when at a film-television awards function Rani Mukerji and Yash Chopra completely ignored each other. The function was organised at the Yash Raj Studios and Rani, who is currently dating the YRF scion Aditya Chopra did not even acknowledge Chopra’s presence at the venue, let alone talk to him. Rani’s last release with Chopra was the Shahid Kapoor starrer Dil Bole Hadippa! in 2009, which incidentally was a huge box-office success. You wonder what transpired in the interim to have caused what seems like a rift between the two. Says an eyewitness, “Everyone who walked past Yash Chopra spoke to him with utmost respect. Even those who saw him at a distance went up to him and greeted him. However, Rani did not make any such efforts. She arrived at the function a bit late but she passed by Chopra at least twice, without looking at him even once. Moreover, both Rani and
Chopra were standing quite close to each other at the bar area, where they had a good chance to mingle but they didn’t. While leaving, Rani kissed a few colleagues goodbye and left with a friend.” It can be argued that Chopra could also have started a conversation with Rani. Adds the witness, “Yes, but Yashji is a very senior man in the industry. Ideally, Rani should have taken the initiative. All said and done, everyone present at the function was quite shocked at her behaviour.” It may be recalled that Rani was not spotted at Chopra’s 40th wedding anniversary bash in August last year. Reveals a source, “Rumour has it that Rani and Aditya will tie the knot this year”. Then why doesn’t it all add up? Didn’t Chopra and his wife Pamela bless Rani at an awards function in January last year, after she performed on stage? The source clarifies, “Yes, they did. They have nothing personal against Rani. But Yash and Pamela’s heart is still with Aditya’s ex-wife Payal.”
Another Kajal in Ajay’s life…
Director Rohit Shetty has started working on the Hindi remake of the south film Singam with Ajay Devgan, and he has roped in the hit south actress Kajal Aggarwal to pair opposite him. However, this won’t be her B-Town debut.
Aggarwal was earlier seen in a miniscule role in 2004′s Kyun… Ho Gaya Na where she plays Aishwarya’s friend. The Singam remake will be her first Hindi film as a leading actress. Initially, Rohit was keen on Anushka Shetty, who starred in the original opposite Surya. But since she was busy with other projects, Kajal was approached and she lapped the opportunity. Kajal has appeared in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada films. She made her acting debut in B-Town but her first huge commercial success at the box office were Chandamama (in Telugu) and Saroja (Tamil). She rose to prominence after her performance as Yuvarani Mitravinda Devi and Indira (Indu) in Telugu film Magadheera, her biggest hit yet.

Entertainment Ranbir, not interested to work with Deepika…
Bollywood’s casanova, Ranbir Kapoor is not very pleased with the idea of working with his ex girlfriend Deepika Padukone. The basic unisex sulu is wrapped once around the body and secured with a knot.
Dressing cool is a must for Fiji. And the cooler the clothing the better. But keeping in mind traditional modesty – it’s not advisable to wear something that’s too skimpy or revealing. Beachwear is fine for the beach but not for anywhere else. So you’re faced with the classic case of what to wear! What about a sulu? For those of you unfamiliar with the term – a sulu is an article of clothing worn by people in Fiji. It is simply a rectangular piece of cloth that is kept on the body by tying a knot at the ends. Some Asian countries call it a sarong. It’s known as a lavalava in Samoa and as a
laplap in Papua New Guinea. And it’s the answer to staying cool without being too revealing. Varying where and how the knot is tied makes the sulu a very versatile piece of clothing – appropriate for any occasion, whether it be lazing beside the pool or dressing for a night on the town. Sulu material is available in a wide variety of patterns and you’re sure to find a piece that suits. Depending on your height, you will need between two and a half and three metres of fabric. And the range of fabrics available in shops means you can have sulus in every pattern and color. Go for the tie and dye look or the tapa design fabric – a great souvenir. Ready made sulus are also available and one particular type is the printed sulu. Your resort should have its own selection of printed sulus for you to choose from. The basic unisex sulu is wrapped once around the body and secured with a knot either at the waist (for the guys) or at the bust line (for the ladies). For the beach, it’s common to see a sulu worn as the bottom and topped with a T-shirt. Artful elegance in sulu wearing can be achieved by pulling the sulu around the waist, tying it at the back; the other half is taken up and tied around the neck in halter neck fashion. One unique way to wear your sulu is to take the top of the material and tie the ends at the back at bust line level. Bring the rest of the
material straight down the front, through the legs and tie the two ends at the waist. There are almost as many ways to tie a sulu as there are patterns, but no matter how it’s worn, the sulu is certainly a cool piece of clothing – one which is at...... home both at the beach and out for the night. However, this is not the only type of sulu that’s available. There are other modified versions of the common sulu that have become everyday wear for men and women in Fiji. For women – the sulu is worn in several ways with an added touch – an elastic waistband. Fiji women often wear an outfit called a chamba which is made up of a top and a sulu. This is the common attire of most female resort and hotel workers in Fiji. Women attending Sunday church services or traditional Fijian functions will often wear a sulu (called a sulu-i-ra) underneath their dresses. The sulu also doubles as part of a dancer’s costume during the performance of a traditional Fijian meke (dance). Men often wear a more formal version of the sulu almost everywhere – to work and to formal occasions like church services and gatherings. The sulu is called a sulu va taga - literally meaning a sulu with pockets. These versions have all evolved from the humble sulu – making it a versatile piece of clothing indeed.

This February police focus on distracted driving - One year anniversary of new law
For one year now police in BC have enforced the new distracted driving law. And they have a year’s worth of statistics to show how big the problem really is. That’s why the RCMP has picked February to launch a campaign against distracted driving. “In 2010 distracted driving was a contributing factor in 32% of all collision fatalities in RCMP jurisdictions,” says Superintendent Mike Diack, head of Traffic Services for the RCMP in BC. Over that same time police across the province issued 32,000 distracted driving violation tickets in BC. “A driver travelling at 90 km/h who takes their eyes off the road for just five seconds drives the length of a football field so even a brief glance at a text message or dialing a cell phone can cause serious injury or death,” said Rich Coleman, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “I commend BC’s law enforcement officers for focusing on distracted driving and making our roads safer for all British Columbians.” Within RCMP-policed areas in the Lower Mainland the problem is more acute, with distracted driving a contributing factor in 48% of all fatalities in 2010. “If you look at our statistics, it’s clear the public doesn’t realize just how dangerous it can be if you don’t have your full focus on the road,” says Superintendent Norm Gaumont, responsible for Traffic Services in RCMP-policed areas across the Lower Mainland District. “Traffic volume, construction, and just the sheer amount of time we spend in our cars all combine to make driving in the Lower Mainland just that much more challenging.” A recent distracted driving survey conducted by the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) reveals the majority of those surveyed feel BC roads are safer as a result of
the distracted driving law. However, many of those surveyed admit to still texting or talking on a hand-held phone on occasion. “BCAA’s distracted driving survey also reveals the percentage of survey participants who feel there is a good chance of being caught and ticketed by law enforcement has dropped,” says Allan Lamb, executive director of the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation. “Yet, we know police are enforcing the law and we need to change that perception and continue to educate motorists about the dangers of distracted driving.” During February police will conduct an awareness and enforcement campaign. Police will be on the lookout for distracted driving behaviours commonly seen such as: • Texting while driving • Talking on a hand-held cell phone while driving • Putting on makeup while driving • Reading a newspaper or book while driving “Across the province we will be looking for any driver behaviour that takes their attention from the road,” says Supt. Diack. He points out that police will use innovative ways to checking drivers. “There may be a police officer in that mascot costume,” he says. Out of the 104 distracted drivingrelated collision fatalities occurred in RCMP jurisdictions in 2010; 14 were from the Island District, 45 were from the Lower Mainland District, 15 were from the North District and 30 were from the Southeast District. If drivers need to make a phone call on a cellular phone or check email, they are advised to use a hands free device, or pull their vehicle over. “There are no messages or conversations that are so important that you need to endanger yourself or others,” explains Supt. Gaumont. The fine for using an electronic device without hands-free while driving is $167. Moreover, drivers caught texting or emailing may receive 3 Driver Penalty Points (DPP) in addition to the fine. Drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) are not permitted to use any prescribed electronic device, even if it is hands-free. GLP drivers will receive the $167 fine and 3 DPP for violating the Distracted Driving Legislation.

Save on heat
Save money while keeping your home comfortable. Install a programmable thermostat It’s easy to install, and you’ll save up to 15 per cent on your home heating bills if you program it to 20 degrees for when you’re home and 17 when out or asleep. Wear a sweater-it’s way better Instead of cranking up the heat, put on a sweater. Not only will you feel cozy, it’s another way to save money on your heating bills. Caulk the cracks and strip the gaps If you have fixed, single pane windows, caulk the interior side where the sash meets the frame as
well as where the trim meets the wall. For exterior doors and windows that open, use weatherstripping where the two surfaces meet. Close the door and save some more Keep doors and windows shut when it’s cold outside to prevent heat escaping from your house. Change the filter Replace your furnace filter every three to six months; more if you smoke or have pets. It will help protect the furnace and prevent the fan motor from overheating. Insulate the plate Insulate electrical switch plates on exterior walls with high-density foam sealers to keep out drafts. Ground the pilot If your gas fireplace has a standing pilot light, turn it off in the summer and save approximately $7 every month on your natural gas bill. Two windows for the price of one If your windows are single pane, purchase inexpensive window film that attaches with double-sided tape to the interior frame and shrink with a blow dryer. The film acts as a second pane, helping to keep the drafts out and the heat in.

Cheers to that, beer may be good for you say Spanish researchers
•Moderate beer drinkers had lower body fat •Lager contains folic acid, calcium say experts •Study divides experts who say it ‘s not healthy A PINT a day may keep the doctor away. Men and women who drink moderate amounts of ale and lager reduce their risk of high blood pressure and diabetes, a study of 1249 volunteers has found.
The subjects, who regularly drank beer in moderation, also had a lower body fat content. But Australian experts have criticised the Spanish study’s findings, saying alcohol does more harm than good. Beer contains folic acid, vitamins, calcium and iron, which researchers say create a protective effect on the cardiovascular system. Lead researcher Dr Ramon Estruch said drinking moderate amounts of beer was associated with nutritional benefits. It did not necessarily mean weight gain, since beer had no fat and kilojoule content was low. The researchers said binge drinking, fatty foods and a lack of exercise were to blame for beer guts. They suggested men should drink three

small glasses of beer a day and women should drink two, combined with exercise and a good diet. But Melbourne Alcohol Recovery Centre founder Brian Cox said the study sent the wrong message. “I don’t care what tests they do, for me alcohol is like heroin. Once you’ve had the first drink, it starts off the addiction,” he said. “We’ve got to look at the big picture.” Alcoholism “is a progressive disease and we don’t want to educate people saying booze is good for you when we know it’s

totally not”, he said. Dieticians Association of Australia spokeswoman Melanie McGrice said people shouldn’t be encouraged to drink alcohol, because it was high in kilojoules. She said the study was in conflict with current research. “We’re talking about one study here, whereas there’s a lot of research to suggest that alcohol puts on weight and that’s going to increase your risk of diabetes more than this study shows,” she said. “If somebody isn’t drinking, I’d encourage them to maintain that.”
Super food’ dark chocolates are healthier than fruits: Study There’s good news for chocoholics as US researchers have discovered that their favourite treat could be an even better way to boost their health than fruit, and also dubbed it as the latest ‘super food.’ They found that chocolates contain more healthy plant compounds and antioxidants, gram-for-gram, than fruit juice and provides far more nutritional goodness than food experts had previously thought, reports the media. Scientists at the Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition compared cocoa powder, the raw ingredient of chocolate, with powders made from fruits like acai berries, blueberries, cranberries and pomegranates, the ‘super fruits’ known for powerful health-giving properties.
The research into dark chocolate, containing around 60 percent cocoa, and cocoa drinks found that they too had more antioxidant activity and more flavanols—health-giving plant chemicals—than fruit. The good news, however, doesn’’t apply to hot chocolate, which is processed. The discovery means cocoa beans meet the nutritional criteria needed for fruits to be classed as ‘super fruits’. “The compounds in dark chocolate are just as good as the botanical compounds in fruit,” said Debra Miller, a senior member of the team. “Cacao seeds should be considered a ‘super fruit’ and products derived from cacao seed extracts, such as natural cocoa powder and dark chocolate, as ‘super foods’,” she said.
Go for dark chocolate, red wine to keep your partner heart-healthy Want to keep your true love’s heart beating strong? Then serve dark chocolate and red wine instead of oysters and the champagne. If you want to keep your true love’s heart beating strong, Susan Ofria, clinical nutrition manager at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, says the real food of love is dark chocolate and red wine. “You are not even choosing between the lesser of two evils, red wine and dark chocolate have positive components that are actually good for your heart,” said Susan Ofria. Red wine, and also dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70 percent or higher, contain resveratrol, which has been found to lower blood sugar. Red wine is also a source of catechins that could help improve “good” HDL cholesterol. Ofria, who is also a nutrition educator, recommends the following list of heart healthy ingredients for February, national heart month. Eight Ways To Say “I Love You” - Top HeartHealthy Foods Red Wine - “Pinots, Shirahs, Merlots - all red wines are a good source of catechins and reservatrol to aid ‘good’ cholesterol.” Dark Chocolate, 70 percent or higher cocoa content - “Truffles, Souffles and even hot
chocolate can be a good source of resveratrol and cocoa phenols (flavonoids) as long as dark chocolate with a high content of coca is used.” Salmon/Tuna - “Especially white, or albacore, tuna and salmon are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, and canned salmon contains soft bones that give an added boost of calcium intake.” Flaxseeds - “Choose either brown or golden yellow, and have them ground for a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, phytoestrogens.” Oatmeal - “Cooked for a breakfast porridge or used in breads or desserts, oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber, niacin, folate and potassium.” Black or kidney beans - “Eat them raw for an even higher source of niacin, folate, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, soluble fiber.” Walnuts and Almonds - “Both walnuts and almonds contain omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, fiber, heart favorable monoand polyunsaturated fats.” Blueberries/cranberries/raspberries/ strawberries - “Berries are a good source of beta carotene and lutein, anthocyanin, ellagic acid (a polyphenol), vitamin C, folate, potassium and fiber.”

Woman miscarried while waiting for surgery
Authorities are urging people in Innisfail, south of Cairns in far north Queensland, to protect themselves against mosquitoes as they clean up the mess left by Cyclone Yasi as dengue fever cases rise in the town. The number of confirmed cases of dengue fever in the town have more than doubled
Darwin battens down as Cyclone Carlos causes chaos across city
AN EXCITED first-time flyer delayed a Perth-bound flight after telling cabin crew not to touch his bag of weapons and bombs, a court has heard. While living on the streets in Melbourne for a year Jason Brown, 39, saved his disability pension to buy flights back to his home state of Western Australia. But, Brown was arrested while his connecting Virgin Blue flight from Adelaide to Perth was preparing for take-off about 7pm on Monday night. The Adelaide Magistrates Court heard Brown was “jumping around, fidgeting and closely approaching the cabin crew and cabin manager”. Anna Brebner, prosecuting, told the court that when asked to move his bag, Brown said: “leave it there mate, it’s got weapons and bombs in it”. “Ground crew were called onto the aircraft to escort him from it,” she said. Ms Brebner said the 125 passengers aboard the plane were delayed.
DARWIN was under siege Wednesday as Tropical Cyclone Carlos delivered a second night of powerful winds and heavy showers, with a 435mm deluge in one suburb. All schools and Darwin’s airport have been closed while Carlos hovers near the Northern Territory capital, with record rainfalls causing flooding. The category 1 cyclone developed just 3km off Darwin’s coast and was moving 15km southeast of the city. Gordon Jackson, the bureau’s supervising
meteorologist, said that they should expect further winds and rains over the next 48 hours. “Carlos is quite a weak system, as far as cyclones go,” Mr Jackson said. “But because it’s close to land, it’s very unpredictable about how it’s going to be moving.” Chief Minister Paul Henderson said Carlos was a far cry from the category 5 Cyclone Yasi, which devastated Queensland earlier this month. He urged people to remain calm and ensure they had cyclone kits ready.
unfortunately dad hasn’t seen the child as he’s driven out of the driveway,” he said. “Unfortunately [he] collided with the child, causing serious head injuries which resulted in the child dying a short time later.” Senior Constable Prodan says visibility may have been an issue. “The father is seated up high on the driver’s side, and the child was on the passenger side down low so that could’ve been a contributing factor,” he said.
last week. Fifteen people are now confirmed to have the mosquito-borne disease and about a dozen others have been tested. The council is urging people to wear repellent and protective clothing when outdoors and to tip water out of containers or cyclone debris in their yards.
Virgin flyer arrested after bomb threat to cabin crew in Adelaide
Stephen Law, for Brown, said his client had been unemployed and “living rough” in Melbourne before deciding to fly for the first time back home to “be with his parents” in WA. He said he had a couple of drinks which had reduced his inhibitions and “inflated his excitement for returning home after all these years”. “It’s the sort of joke which has well and truly been brought home to him,” Mr Law said. “It’s the sort of thing that should not have been said in this current international climate.” He said Brown would again have to save for another flight to Perth. In imposing penalty, Magistrate Joseph Baldino said Brown’s threats may have been empty, but serious. “It is certainly not a trivial threat by any imagination.” He fined Brown $3250 and ordered he pay court and prosecution costs.

Toddler killed in driveway accident
Police say the death of a toddler in a driveway accident at Hillside, northwest of Melbourne, is a tragedy. A 16-month-old boy died after he was struck by a four wheel drive being driven by his father at their home. Senior Constable Mick Prodan says the child was run over after wandering away from his grandmother as she bent down to tie another child’s shoe. “The child has crawled under the car to retrieve a small toy and

requested surgery to remove her unborn baby, which had died in the womb, but a problem with the hospital’s computer admission system saw her sent home at 4:00am (AEDT). When she returned the next day she was told the operating theatre was not ready and was left alone when she miscarried. The incident brings to mind Jana Horska who waited for two hours at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital before miscarrying in a toilet in 2007.
A pregnant woman says she was left alone at a New South Wales public hospital where she miscarried her child while waiting for surgery. Heather Green says she was calling out for help as she miscarried at Blacktown Hospital, almost a full day since she first arrived. It has prompted an apology from the hospital and a promise from Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt to look into the incident. Ms Green told the Nine Network she

QUEENSLAND’S most wanted man spent most of his 15 years on the run working for Queensland Health. Convicted killer Luke Andrew Hunter, 42, escaped from Borallon Correctional Centre near Ipswich in February 1996 by cutting through a fence. About 18 months later, he was given a job at Herberton Hospital in north Queensland where he worked closely with patients. Hunter, who in the late 1990s was Queensland’s most wanted man and No.4 on Australia’s most wanted list, was arrested on Sunday morning in a home at
Herberton on the Atherton Tableland. When Hunter made his escape, he had served just five years of a 21-year sentence for the murder of his lover’s husband at Newcastle, New South Wales. While the whereabouts of the fair-skinned and red-haired murderer remained a mystery to Queensland police, he became a familiar face to the patients and staff of Herberton Hospital as he tended gardens and strolled the wards. Until his recapture, Hunter worked as a wardsman and groundsman for about $1000 a week under the alias Ashban Cadmiel. He is believed to have got the job with the assistance of the Jesus Group, a religious cult now being investigated for allegedly harbouring Hunter. Most of his duties in the wards involved moving patients and bodies and serving meals. Hunter is being held in maximum security at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre ahead of his next court appearance in March.
Dangerous bacteria found on mall food trays
There were as many harmful bacteria detected on reusable plastic food trays in some Vancouver-area shopping malls as are found on toilet seats, an investigation has found. Swabs taken from trays in food courts at three malls were sent to University of British Columbia microbiologist Bob Hancock, who analyzed the samples. The malls involved were Pacific Centre in downtown Vancouver, Park Royal in West Vancouver and Metrotown in Burnaby “We saw as many bacteria on some food trays as we saw on a toilet,” said Hancock. Swabs were taken from a gas station toilet for comparison and lab technicians did find similar types and amounts of pathogens. Hancock said that one of the bacteria found in abundance on some food trays could be particularly dangerous. “There was a fairly large number of a bacteria called acinetobacter,” Hancock said. “Acinetobacter is one of the superbugs in our society that’s causing major problems in individuals throughout the world because it’s so resistant to antibiotics.” The acinetobacter was found on one tray at Park Royal and one tray at Pacific Centre.
Malls respond The Pacific Centre mall’s general manager, Ultan Kampff, said cleaning staff wipe the trays after every use and disinfect them every night. “Our service provider has very high standards that are in line with acute care facilities,” Kampff said. “Having said that, there’s always an opportunity to revisit our procedures and our processes to see if we can do it better.” Park Royal and Metrotown both offered statements in response to the test results, saying they had rigorous cleaning methods. Despite the presence of some serious pathogens, they are not a major concern for healthy people, Hancock said. “The number of bacteria that are transferred from a tray, even if it’s in the range of hundreds of bacteria, they’re not sufficient to cause disease because we have very efficient systems in our body for getting rid of bacteria.” Mall administrators said that while local health authorities do set the same standards for cleanliness in food courts as they do in restaurants, standards are not set for trays themselves because they aren’t meant to be in direct contact with food.
Spouse charged in North Vancouver killing
Harvey Frank Bracken, Ferguson’s common-law spouse has been charged for manslaughter. The body of 40-year-old Jennifer Ferguson of Surrey was discovered in North Vancouver Kirkstone Park on February 2, 2011.
She was reported missing to Surrey RCMP on Jan. 30. Police said she had not been seen since Jan. 22. Investigators said Ferguson’s body was wrapped in plastic when it was discovered. Police believe the slaying happened at a different location.
New layer of security at YVR
Get ready to go through a new layer of security checks when travelling from Vancouver International Airport. A new pilot program started in January called Passenger Behaviour Observation. Transport Canada Spokesperson Patrick Charette said it’s another layer of security. “We will have officers trained to look for suspicious behaviour and to assess whether
they are passengers that represent threats for aviation security.” he said. It’s being tested only at YVR. Charette said the program is not ethnic or racial profiling because officials will be looking for specific behaviours. Passenger behaviour assessments are employed by a number of countries around the world, including Israel.
GST fraud gets jail time
A Surrey father and daughter were sent to prison Tuesday in a landmark GST fraud case. Adolf and Sandy Schiel were convicted of defrauding taxpayers of $2 million. The pair filed phony invoices to claim goods and services tax credits. A provincial court judge sentenced Sandy Schiel to five years in prison. Her father, 74, was given four years due to bad health. investigator, said the sentencing was a long time coming. “Justice was done so to speak,” said Redden, who is now retired. “It’s a shame that none of the money was recovered, and none of the fines, I doubt, will be recovered. So, it really cost the Canadian taxpayers multi-millions of dollars.” The Schiels were also ordered to pay fines of $1.9 million each. They have said they plan to appeal their conviction.
Dianne Watts rounds up business in India
Dianne Watts is in Mumbai and Delhi this week, meeting with business owners to try to secure new contracts. Surrey mayor Dianne Watts is visiting Mumbai and Delhi. She is meeting with local governments and business owners, trying to secure some contracts. And so far, she says they’re doing well. “There are some companies that will be
(Canada)
signing some deals over the next couple of days, and they’re very excited about it. We’ve actually had to get the Consul General’s office to assist us with drawing up contracts and things like that.” More information on how many jobs it could create and how much money it could bring to the local economy will be released after she returns.
Ed Mayne pulls out of Liberal leadership race
Throwing his support behind George Abbott Ed Mayne has pulled the plug on his campaign yesterday. He’s throwing his support behind George Abbott just like Moira Stilwell, who announced she was pulling out of the race yesterday. Four candidates now remain: George Abbott, Kevin Falcon, Christy Clark, and Mike de Jong.
Canadians struggling with record household debt Average family owes $100,000 Canadian families keep sinking deeper into debt. The average family owes $100,000, according to the Vanier Institute of the Family. Its report suggests our debt-to-income ratio has hit a new record in Canada, at 150 per cent. That means for every $1,000 in after-tax income, Canadian families owe $1,500.
Needless to say, that’s making it much more difficult to save. In 1990, Canadian families managed to set aside an average of $8,000; that’s a savings rate of 13 per cent. Last year, it was only 4.2 per cent or $2,500. The number of households behind in their mortgages by at least three months has also climbed; the latest numbers say it is 17,400 homes across the country.
Crime ring bust
Vancouver Police have busted what they call a huge property crime ring operating out of an apartment on Commercial Drive. Constable Jana Mcguinness says ERT officers raided the apartment at 1130 Commercial on February 10th, but getting inside wasn’t easy. “They found a very heavily fortified door - it was almost like a man-trap situation what that is where you have to be buzzed
in, you wait, and you’re buzzed in through an inner door.” Once inside, officers found drugs along with a number of stolen bicycles and computers. “It will take several months to re-unite with its original owners.” Mcguiness says seven people were arrested at the time of the raid, but charges have yet to be laid.
