Making a Leaf Print

step 1

Work surface covered with pastic sheetig leaves of a shapes ad sizes newspaper sheets, cut to size Pait ad pait paette Foam brushes, cosmetic spoges, a brayer, ad/ or a homemade dauber Prewashed Prewashed fabric (see page 28) Spoge brayer for rubbig (optioa)

step 2

Damp towe for wipig your hads (this ca be a messy operatio!) step 1. On your plastic-covered plastic-covered work surace,

place a lea on a piece o newspaper, i desired, and apply paint to it with a brush, sponge, brayer, brayer, or dauber. step 2. Careully pick up the lea and place it

paint side down on your abric, making sure that none o its edges roll under.

step 3

step 3. Put a piece o newspaper on top o the

lea, then rub on it with your hands or a so sponge brayer to smooth the paint onto the abric. step 4. Careully li of the newspaper. (It will

more than likely have paint on it, so be careul where you put it down. I usually crumple it up right away and throw it in the trash so I don’t have any accidents.) Careully li of the lea. I like to wipe it clean with a damp rag right away so I can use it again.

step 4

step 5. Use the same lea to make additional

prints. Most leaves will last through many printings. step 6. Allow the paint to dry and then heat-

set (see page 22), i necessary.

h CrCkl ffC To ahieve the traditiona batik rake, remove the wax-aden abri rom your strething rame ater the ast appiation o wax and paint. crunh the abri up with your hands as muh or as itte as you want. lay it out fat on your work surae, then paint over the entire surae with a thin or medium-body dark-oored dark-oored textie paint that has been thinned with water. (You an aso use india ink, aryi inks, or artist aryi paints that have been thinned with textie medium or this step.) Some artists get great resuts by putting the nished piee in the reezer beore runhing. This gives it a stronger rake, as the rozen, rozen, hard wax tends to rak with sharper ines.
