step 2
Damp towe for wipig your hads (this ca be a messy operatio!) step 1. On your plastic-covered plastic-covered work surace,
place a lea on a piece o newspaper, i desired, and apply paint to it with a brush, sponge, brayer, brayer, or dauber. step 2. Careully pick up the lea and place it
paint side down on your abric, making sure that none o its edges roll under.
step 3
step 3. Put a piece o newspaper on top o the
lea, then rub on it with your hands or a so sponge brayer to smooth the paint onto the abric. step 4. Careully li of the newspaper. (It will
more than likely have paint on it, so be careul where you put it down. I usually crumple it up right away and throw it in the trash so I don’t have any accidents.) Careully li of the lea. I like to wipe it clean with a damp rag right away so I can use it again.
step 4
step 5. Use the same lea to make additional
prints. Most leaves will last through many printings. step 6. Allow the paint to dry and then heat-
set (see page 22), i necessary.

h CrCkl ffC To ahieve the traditiona batik rake, remove the wax-aden abri rom your strething rame ater the ast appiation o wax and paint. crunh the abri up with your hands as muh or as itte as you want. lay it out fat on your work surae, then paint over the entire surae with a thin or medium-body dark-oored dark-oored textie paint that has been thinned with water. (You an aso use india ink, aryi inks, or artist aryi paints that have been thinned with textie medium or this step.) Some artists get great resuts by putting the nished piee in the reezer beore runhing. This gives it a stronger rake, as the rozen, rozen, hard wax tends to rak with sharper ines.
