A year without Pride

A simple question if I may. If   E S  I E S  T  R  E R  E  P  O  R  P  T Pride is to go on  H O  G N S  C O O L D E S I G this year, does this mean that the idea of a true social movement will be back in our hands to — God, who’da thought — carry on our  shoulders? Would not having funding mean that the party and the politics (like those even matter anymore) would be the property of the LGBT community? Does this mean that gays will no longer bitch about the “commercialism” of “their” event? Does this mean that with the focus squarely on the largest consumer body (gay men), the inclusion of lesbians, transfolks and bisexuals will just not be bothered with? It would save a lot of time and money m oney (sarcastically (sarcasticall y said).

&

 k   t o w  o w o r k   t t  c e g e t  P r i c  e P  o s e  nd A m b r o  a nd  y a  c  a y  v r a  t M G i l  l ll i i v  S c o t t M

If Pride funding is cut, is it really that bad? We don’t really celebrate Pride for what it originally was intended. Could this mean that society has assimilated queerdom? It doesn’t feel like we need Pride anymore, since we don’t cherish anybody outside of our own gay community. Case in point: the Dyke March, Trans March and the Pride parade are all on different days. The large parade brings everybody together, but it still manages to segregate. So where is the community? Maybe we could use a year without Pride. Maybe we need to. Maybe it’ll remind us of the meaningful stuff, rather than just our selfish sexuality. — Alex Mizz B_itch

n May 17, I spent part o my day removing “DIE AIDSSPREADING FAGGOTS” and other hateul comments rom  fab’s website. Not exactly the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia I envisioned. While gay rights in North America have advanced in leaps and bounds, society still osters the acceptance o anti-gay attitudes. We have to shake the idea that as Canadian gays we’re sitting sae and sound. While thousands o us can attend a Lady Gaga concert and revel in our seemingly ree sexuality, sexuality, there are causes that need our support in great numbers, or the next generation might be in real trouble. Critically acclaimed rapper Tyler, the Creator, raps crassly about rape and spews lines like “Come “C ome take a stab at it aggot, I preordered your casket,” and “Deep down, I’m an emo uckin’ aggot that’s depressed.” Tyler tried to explain himsel in NME magazine: “I’m not homophobic. I just think aggot hits and hurts people. It hits. And gay just means you’re stupid. I don’t know — we don’t think about it, we’re just kids. We don’t think about that shit.” Queer indie darlings Tegan and Sara decided to call out Tyler and the music community that allows his attitude attitu de to go unchecked. On her band’s site Sara asked, “In any other industry would I be expected to tolerate, overlook and fnd deeper meaning in this kid’ss sickening rhetoric? Why should I care about this music or kid’ its ‘brilliance’ when the message is so repulsive and irresponsi ble?” Tyler’s Tyler’s Twitter response? “I Tegan and Sara need some hard dick, hit me up.” Classy. We can only hope that impressionable “kids” like Tyler don’t adopt his attitude. A report titled Every Class in Every School: The Final Report  of the First National Climate Survey on Homophobia in Canadian Schools was released this month, detailing detailin g the results o a survey given out to 3,700 Canadian high school students . It’s no surprise that it contains some nauseating acts. Sixty-our percent o those who identiy as lesbian, gay, bi, trans or queer eel unsae at school; 55 percent are verbally abused at school; and 21 percent are physically harassed at school. Ten Ten percent reported hearing homophobic comments weekly or even daily rom their teachers. Real lie is not yet as sunny as an episode o  Glee, and there isn’t a prep school ull o pitch-perect boys or scared young men to escape to. So who will help them out i not their ellow gays? Some issues seem larger than lie and knowing where to start is hard, but there are lots o local homo causes that need warm  bodies and loud voices. The banning o GSAs in Ontario’s Catholic schools is bound to hurt gay kids, kids , and Rob Ford’s attitude toward spending and his voting history on HIV unding makes the crucial Hassle Free Clinic a potential target that needs deending. We’ve got the power to create some real change, but we have to remember the dierence between outrage and action. We can’t plan the cocktail luncheon beore we fght the battle. While activism isn’t as easy as going out and buying a copy o  Born This Way , it’s  bound to save more lives. It’s time to stop talking about how awesome it is to get a one-line shout in a pop song and start writing rallying cries o our own. They are bound to be hits, too.

Getting leied “What happens in the showers, stays in the showers,” says Toronto Triggerfish Triggerfish Water Polo player Dillon Scheenaard. “That being said, it is pretty hot!” This July, the Triggerfish will be taking over the beaches (and the boys) of Hawaii for the 2011 International Lesbian and Gay Aquatics Championships. Before they throw their balls around in Honolulu, the team will give Toronto Toronto a sneak peak of their “talents” at the annual Triggerfish Polo Boys & Girls Gone Wild! event. “It’s a great opportunity to rub Speedos with the players, have a few drinks in the sun and find out what exactly a ‘hole check’ does.” It’s a party that is sure to be bulging with excitement. — Ryan Carter  Triggerfish Polo Boys & Girls Gone Wild! is Sat, June 4 from 2–5pm at Boutique Bar, 506 Church St. triggerfishwaterpolo.ca

Gender bending and ball balling ing “It’s more in a cabaret style, where the music will suddenly stop and there will be a performance up on the balcony,” says Todd Klinck, co-owner of Goodhandy’s, Toronto’s pansexual nightclub. Goodhandy’s is home to monthly gay events, like Dirty Sexy Party, Sodom and Jock, and will celebrate its fifth anniversary with the Gender Fuck Ball. The Live Spotlight component of the evening features a range of sexy performances, from burlesque to drag. Co-owner Mandy Goodhandy explains, “The Gender Fuck Ball is not people fucking; it’s people fucking with their gender, and you have the option to come as any gender.” In the last year Goodhandy’s has turned in a new direction, no longer shooting porn or staging it live. “We have no shame, regret or issues with our ongoing reputation as a porn palace, but we have gotten out of the live sex-show business entirely,” Klinck says. Fear not — the private sex booths are still available and ready to be dirtied any night of the week. — Ryan English  The Gender Fuck Ball is Fri, May 27 at 10pm. Gays get Wicked “Toronto has Little Italy, Little Korea, Little India, two gay villages — there is still segregation between cultures, genders and sexualities,” says The Red Ligh t District theatre th eatre company’s artistic d irector, Ted Witzel. “But sex is the great equalizer.” When Witzel was writing a new adaptation of La Ronde he Ronde he wondered, “Where do lonely or sexually bored straight people go for a connection?” Red Light District is known for its site-specific productions, and when the swingers’ venue Wicked Club offered its fledgling cabaret space, Witzel jumped at it. Gay men are a new demographic for Wicked, but Witzel likes that. “The original La Ronde is Ronde is a series of straight hookups, but I have thrown that out. La Ronde was Ronde was a snapshot of the Vienna sexual underground, and a snapshot of Toronto’s sexual underground today has to include queers. We’re here and that’s part of the normal fabric of the city. And I don’t have a lot of hetero hookup experiences.” If Witzel decides to expand his sexual history, Wicked will be offering discounts for theatregoers who want to stay for the club’s regular erotic activities. — Drew Rowsome  La Ronde runs Thurs–Sun until Sun, June 4 at Wicked Club, 1032 Queen St W. theredlightdistrict.ca

I don’t dry it, though. I let it dry by itself. It takes about an hour. Do I comb it forward? No, I don’t comb it forward. It’s sort of a little bit forward and back. I’ve combed it the same way for years. Same thing, every time.” Donald Trump Trump is also a traditionalist with regard to his hair. “Head & Shoulders is suing Donald Trump for slander.” Comedian Conan O’Brien is not a traditionalist. “He suffers from serious diseases that could be an impediment to safe driving. driving.” ”  An Italian man’s driver’s licence is not renewed because he is gay. “I think you were born gayer than a sweet-smelling  jockstrap.” Wisconsin Judge Philip Kirk  challenges a defendant’s claim that he’s heterosexual and therefore couldn’t be guilty of molesting boys. “If Rihanna wanted me, I’d do it with her. DRAG ROPES

xtravagant performance of gender is perilous and double-edged,” says Gigi L’Amour (aka Stephen Lawson) of theatrical marvels 2boys.tv. “It attracts as much disdain as admiration and, in many places, it can get you killed. We are very interested in the role that queens and trannies have played throughout our history and the ways in which these figures have served at the forefront of  a multitude of liberation struggles, as catalysts for change.” L’Amour is half of 2boys.tv; Aaron Pollard’s keen eye and technical prowess provide the spectacularr landscapes that spectacula L’Amour interacts with. Pollard and Lawson began working together in 2002 and are known for melding drag with music and video projection and infusing the result with a campy aesthetic and an explicitly gay edge. During a performance of  2007’s ArtHouse Cabaret , audiences were stunned into silence  by 2boys.tv’s performance Pas  peur  ( No Fear ). ) . The piece reflected on the torture of Abu Ghraib prisoners by projecting images of hooded and twisted   bodies on a screen while L’Amour, swathed in black, lipsynched to a somber operatic number. At the end of the number, one audience member  booed. Pollard was pleased: “I think this work came as a bit of a surprise to ArtHouse

audiences, as it was presented toward the end of a pretty raucous evening of entertainment. In other contexts, the reaction is different, though the work — as was intended — often elicits a moment of silence.”

2boys.tv returns to the Buddies stage with Tightrope , a new work that explores the void created by AIDS. When the crisis hit, Lawson and Pollard had barely reached adolescence. “A huge percentage of men just a few years older than us vanished,” Pollard says, “and there was a deep and lasting impact on our lives. This

crisis left an enormous cultural gap that remains to this day.” Drag plays an important role in Tightrope, beyond Lawson’s performance. The show calls for a chorus of “drag mourners” to appear onstage alongside L’Amour, and 2boys.tv decided to recruit queens and performers from the local community. Pollard explains that the casting “situates the work — both the process and the result — in the place where it is presented. When we take our work on the road, we always aspire to really visit a place, interact with people, rather than just dropping in.” Working with the House of  Bogue, which will join the Toronto cast for three nights, in the Montreal production of  Tightrope tied the work to that city’s AIDS history. The Toronto queens will mourn our city’s loss, making the piece that much more personal, literally hitting too close to home. “ Tightrope is more about invoking a set of  images and ideas that recall a past. In doing so, we are remembering a whole generation of people we barely met,” says Pollard — remembering and honouring with fabulous costumes and deliciously campy performances. Tightrope runs Thurs, May 26 to Sun, June 5 at Buddies in Bad Times, 12 Alexander St. buddiesinbadtimes.com

ANDREW ROBERTSON GETS TO KNOW G ELLIOTT SIMPSON, THE DELIGHTFUL DEVIANT BEHIND THE CAMERA n the world of photographer G Elliott Simpson, the male figure is moulded into a dark and almost devilish presence. A slick sheen or an ashen veneer coats muscled flesh. Each model’ model’ss face and body is lost and identity is transformed and obscured. It’s no surprise that Simpson’s work explores the darker side of human nature. In his youth, he faked his own death at school to freak out his teachers and read books about the occult. Postuniversity, Simpson worked as a graphic designer and dabbled in photography — until a life-changing “accident” in 2003. “I think they call it misadventure,” Simpson says, laughing, as he remembers the fast living that eventually left him in a coma. “It was hard partying, drugs, sex, and rock and roll — self-inflicted. I don’t relate to it at all anymore because I’ve changed so much since that event. I’m married now and kind of a recluse.” After two years of rehab, Simpson needed a hobby  beyond taking snapshots of his cat. What started as a little diversion soon became his artistic focus, and he’s now preparing to launch his first major solo gallery show, Brotherhood . The models featured in his photographs have a delectably macabre quality, complemented by layers of paint, latex and a surreal finish. Recently named artist of the week by The Advocate , he’s made a name for himself by exploring kink and notions of identity influenced by religion and psychology. In Brotherhood , Simpson creates a world of his own. “A friend said it seemed like I was making my own little cult,” he explains. “I really latched on to that idea, and so the show is based around the idea that my work is a cult that I’ve created. There’s an insular feel to it, like if you walked into the freemasons’ guildhall and there’s pictures of past members. The fact they are all black and skeletal makes them look like they all belong in the same secret society.”

fab May 25, 2011

15

The world of cults, secret societies and maligned religious practices like voodoo has always been a source of inspiration. “Visual cues from The Day of the Dead you can see in the work,” Simpson says. “Santa Muerte is also fascinating. They are Mexican groups of Catholics worshipping Saint Death as if it was a person. It’s fantastically interesting. It’s the only saint they  believe you can pray to for revenge. I try to take ideas from all those different places so that I’m not specifically referencing Baron Samedi or Santa Muerte, but I love the collision of ideas and images.” For Simpson, an individual piece can take upward of 35 hours to complete, and the final result is tense and erotically charged, confidently straddling the worlds of art, erotica and pornography. But while his work is quite graphic, it doesn’t feature full-frontal nudity. “I don’t usually photograph naked people because I think dicks look kind of  weird on guys,” says Simpson. “Especially when they’re painted the way I do. I also think a lot of people aren’t artistically artistically open enough to look at a picture and not be distracted by the dick, so I don’t shoot t hem nude generally. It’s implied nudity — you just don’t see the parts.” While the models aren’t naked, that doesn’t mean that being photographed by Simpson is for the shy. “It’s often more awkward when I ask the model to put a corrugated tube down their pants or drool on themselves,” he explains. “I had a J-Lube phase, and it was quite stringy and messy and looked pretty suggestive without showing anything. Models are as hesitant to do those things as they are to be photographed nude. They’re all worried about how they look.” The men in Simpson’s work are definitely part of the draw, and his photographs have become so popular that models have  begun to seek him out. His technical process adds to the allure: he creates hyper-masculine hyper-mas culine figures with mythical qualities, but he doesn’t limit himself to the He-Man body type. “I tend to like someone who has good definition with what I’m doing now, painting people,” he explains. “The definition is what adds to the interest. Some people would say I shoot twinks, but I’d say I’d photograph anyone: skinny to athletic to very muscular, depending on how much definition they have. Often the men end up looking like twinks in my photographs  because we shave them head to toe to paint them or to apply latex to them, simply  because it has to be done.”

It can be impossible to identify the models when Simpson is finished with them, giving the work an element of mystery; alien-like textures replace skin, and shadows are carefully cast to obscure faces. “It’s interesting that you can line up my pieces and not be able to identify who the models are,” he says. “I think people are more interesting than they appear. It’s always the case, but it’s hard to get at that with the way we interact in our world, as people classify themselves and dress certain ways, and I like to get past that. By dressing someone up or modifying them to an extreme, you can get closer to the idea that how someone appears on the outside is not really who they are. I like that idea that the obliteration of identity almost makes the models interchangeable. Maybe that says something about men.”

hen popularity is thrust upon you, it is like a commoner  becoming a princess for all the right reasons. Tonight, even in the torrential rains, the lineup to enter the popular monthly party Business Woman’s Special is longer than a soup kitchen in a depression. Inside Augusta House, organizer April Wozny slinks about the red wallpapered interior in a black lace negligee. “I’ve put black tape over my nipples,” she says, whipping out her left breast as proof. “Because people are drinking.” Heaving with delicious goods, the dancefloor is a yummy sample platter of beefy, skinny, hairy, smooth, humpy, dumpy, cute and tough boys, some of whose deodorant clearly ran out a few songs before I arrived. With three DJs rotating (Phil ( Phil V, V, Sammy Rawal and Nino Brown), Brown ), it’s understandably sweaty. Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion plays continuously as I exhaust myself by eye-fucking a hot bastard in jeans hung dangerously low down his breathtaking bubble butt. Being popular by being a showoff is the goal of any drunken drag queen stumbling down the street in ripped pantyhose. Up the narrow stairs leading to Zelda’s second floor, Roxy Rollover stands guard. “Do you have a reservation?” she asks with straight face and crooked tits. Zelda’s Monday night Dirty Bingo is so popular the space i s at capacity. Each month, proceeds from the bingo go to a different charity. The PWA Friends for Life Bike Rally has the honour tonight. Wade Borges, Borges,  bike rally co-chair, is on hand as two buff  guys charitably strip naked and roam the room collecting donations while clutching itsy bitsy teenie weenie unmarked bingo cards in front of their goods. Special rounds with names like “butt plug,” cunty commentary, and the occasional whiff of poppers from the queens keep the night interesting. “We used to pass the poppers around the room,” recalls Lena Over. Those who believe that once popular is always popular are like silentfilm stars who pretend sound is just a fad. But some things, apparently, are timeless. Entering the Guvernment nightclub for another edition of Massive of Massive,, my heart skips a  beat as I play catch-up to the thumping  bass coming from the main room. The heaving dancefloor oozes with shirtless men clutching water bottles. I haven’t seen a scene like this since the early 2000s.. He’s tried it all. “I keep finding strange and obscure alcohols to mix, like shochu or pisco or even screech,” he tells me. “HL Mencken once paid a mathematician to estimate the number of possible drink combinations. Clayton a ton Wil Willi lia ams: ms: The e Clothin Cloth o ing ng Wiza Wizard zarrd

he Clothing Show was started in 1977 by Marlene Campbell and was originally named The Old Clothing Show and Sale. In 2000, Bonnie Meacham and Clayton Williams bought it from Campbell and gave it a much-needed makeover. The duo made it into a forum for designers, artisans and anyone with a unique perspective on the world of  fashion. Over the past few years, The Clothing Show has become a Toronto fashionista’s must-do, thanks to its runway shows, unique vendor opportunities and some of  the best vintage shopping in the city. The premise is simple: give local designers a space to sell garments that were primarily or partly made in Canada. Williams has  been known to recruit unknowns out of  small stalls in Kensington to give them their first mainstream exposure. With the spring edition of the TCS approaching, I asked Williams about his passion for clothing, what’s new for 2011 and why you should be in attendance this season.

T

Max MacDonald: How would you describe the evolution of The Clothing Show? Clayton Williams: At first the show was

simply about vintage clothing until Bonnie took it over and made some big changes. We took the focus off just vintage and started putting the focus on local designers and very small designers who had great lines but needed that push. I call it “kitchencounter couture.” MM: What can attendees expect to see this May? CW: Well, the biggest change is that we are

not in the Better Living Centre — we are in the Queen Elizabeth Building for 2011. We moved to a different location where it will be more intimate. We have merged and expanded certain areas, and there is more menswear this season than before. MM: Where does The Clothing Show fit in Toronto’s fashion landscape? CW: You know, it’s interesting: I kind of

view The Clothing Show as sitting on the sidelines like an underdog. However, LG Fashion Week is an event that took time tim e to grow, too. I look at us as the foundation for designers; we give them the ability to test the waters and the marketplace. We are constantly compared to FAT for the exposure we give designers.

Retro G designs go down the runway at The Clothing Show

MM: What advice would you give a designer who wants to participate in The Clothing Show? CW : For the first-time vendor, make sure

you have enough stock and understand merchandizing and how to make a profit. Plus, you have to know how to sell things to those who attend. It’s also about simple marketing basics, like having a way to capture visitors’ email addresses to help with post-event sales. MM: Who are your favourite designers that show? CW : I’m one of those people who loves

hunting through the vintage section for clothes. I do love Clothing Brand Experiment and a few other designers, though. It’s one thing to say you support local designers but another to pull out your wallet and actually buy something. theclothingshow.com [email protected] fab May 25, 2011

ollowing a trend popular in today’s dating world, Donny and Josh met online. Josh noticed Donny on Facebook through a mutual riend and was intrigued by his profle. “He kept asking me to chill,” Donny says with a laugh. “I wanted to get to know him better.” Ater chatting or a while, the two decided to meet or a date, which Josh says was wa s “awkward” because Donny wanted them to hang out with his cousins, who didn’t know Donny was gay. Josh says he noticed Donny was quite shy, while Donny was struck by  Josh’s sweetness. Ater spending some time with Donny’s amily, the couple ditched them and ran o to see a movie. During “Ater, I Fame, they shared their frst kiss. “Ater, went to use the washroom and he texted

me: ‘You’re beautiul,’” Donny says. “I was  blushing in the bathroom.” Recently Donny and Josh took the next step by moving in together.
