Two out of three of Keith Cole’s fabulous pastimes Not only was it completely wonderful to see a five-page spread on the glorious Benjamin Paley [“Feel Your Best While Wearing the Least,” fab #418, Feb 16] — my favourite personal trainer — it was equally a treat to read all about Steers & Queers [Tunes, fab #418, Feb 16], one of the best theme nights in the city. Flashers for women

Many women are upset over the “men only” policy at Flash [“Only Meat,” fab #414, Dec 22]. What they don’t seem to consider are the policies of many women’s establishments and events. I am not sure of their current policy, but a male friend told me he was denied entry to Slack’s a couple of years ago because he needed to be accompanied by at least two women. It is also common at many events for men to be charged a higher cover charge. During Pride there is the Dyke March, while the Sunday events are mutually inclusive. At last year’s Pride, there was a “women and children only” area behind The 519 in the splash pads. I did

not see anything similar where men could bring their children. Besides this, do these women also wish to attend men’s bathhouses? I’ve always been a fan of places with diverse crowds, so I have no plans to attend Flash myself. However, I don’t see their policies as being any more discriminatory than the examples I’ve given. If all the bars were like this, it would be a problem, but I only see this as adding to the diversity of places to go. All the Village needs now is an establishment similar to Flash for women. — Matthew Fredericks

Ass from the past

A

l Parker’s rugged good looks and trademark clone beard are the stuff of legend. Peter Berlin’s superhuman ability to fill out a one-piece jump suit is uncanny. It’s hard to forget the sight of surfer-twink pornstar Kip Noll sliding out of a pair of oldschool gym shorts and knee socks. Retro gay porn films and the stars that inhabit them still resonate with a powerfully sexual energy and style. In the straight world, porn that’s past its prime is relegated to the discount bin before fading from sight, but gay porn from decades ago is painstakingly preserved and maintains a level of popularity among the horny masses. What is it about old-fashioned gay flesh flicks that we are drawn to? They may not qualify as valuable historical resources, but retro gay pornos are gold mines — they’re a visual documentation of our past. Directors including William Higgins, Joe Gage and Wakefield Poole used classic cruising locations like gay beaches, piers and empty warehouses long since abandoned by horny homos. Many of the old pornos contain setup footage or scenes shot at pioneering sex clubs, discos and social hot spots; these films are time capsules of the dawning of gay men’s sexual liberation, before the horrific buzzkill that was the AIDS crisis. To audiences today, these films show a gay life that is raw, wild and totally foreign. It’s a side of gay life that does not, and will not, exist in the same way ever again. In most retro gay porn, things appeared as they really were. Manscaping had yet to become the default trend of the genre’s top stars, so balls, chests and pubes were left to their own devices. This, combined with the grainy film stock and amateur production values, gives retro flicks a realistic edge and makes the action seem more like the sex we actually have, unlike today’s big-studio offerings, with their manicured, waxed, makeup-covered actors. In this issue, Max MacDonald discusses how old-school porn style has affected the world of fashion, but its influence goes deeper than mesh and short shorts. The iconography established and created by the early gay porn directors had a lasting impact on the sexual appetites of gay men. It was through these films we were first introduced to moving pictures of the leather daddies, mechanics, cowboys and hustlers who populate homosexual fantasies to this day. In 2007 Raging Stallion introduced an “invisible condom” that covers only half the shaft and can be digitally removed under the right circumstances. Their innovative way of getting around the stigma, danger and fines associated with bareback sex videos may be revolutionary, but the reality is that we live in a time where condoms aren’t optional. We can enjoy the porn made in the pre-condom era guilt-free and appreciate it for the carefree, spontaneous, less scary time it reflects, but the way we have sex has now changed. But that doesn’t mean we can’t lay the groundwork for tomorrow’s retro porn by making condoms sexy. And hopefully one day, gays will look back to this groundbreaking time where safe sex became part of the hottest sexual fantasies.

“When I see that my audience is happy and having fun then I’m the happiest and feel like the sexiest DJ in the world. And that makes my music sexy,” says DJ Mister Mola. Born and raised in Belgium, Mola has excited gay boys all over Europe with his hard, soulful house beats. He’s conquered Spain, Germany, Turkey and Russia; now Mola makes his way across the Atlantic for his debut Toronto gig. March may be cold in Canada, but Mola plans to release clubsters from the burden of T-shirts by turning up the temperature on the dancefloor. “Toronto is totally new for me, but I like new challenges and culture,” he says. “I’ve heard many good things about Toronto, including its party scene. And I also knew about fly from Queer as Folk, so it’s a big honour to play there.” The honour will be ours when Mister Mola flaunts his musical talent, his hotness and the pectacular Delice Dancers. – Eduardo Sabate DJ Mister Mola gets busy in the booth for Delice Dream Festival Pre-Party, Sat, March 12 at fly nightclub, 8 Gloucester St. Info: flynightclub.com

“I walked into Woody’s for a beer and met a very unique individual,” says Roland Drake, coordinator of To Laos with Love, a multimedia presentation and fundraising concert being staged at the 519 Community Centre. That fateful day beneath the Pierre et Gilles prints, he shared a beer with Mike Yap of Port Hope. But instead of gabbing about antiquing or cruising, Drake says he was moved by Yap’s description of Adopt a Village in Laos, a humanitarian organization Yap co-founded with his friend Steve Rutledge. “I have become completely fascinated by their work. I have also become very passionate and intrigued with Laos and its people,” says Drake, who hopes to spread the word about the invaluable work his Port Hope pals have done in building schools and distributing water filters. “To honour them and to help share what they have done, and are doing, I have created this event, To Laos with Love.”

P

lays about parties are always intriguing,” says Jonathan Morton-Schuster (above) of his role as Emory in The Boys in the Band. “It’s a heightened environment with so much at stake. And with gay men it’s quadrupled.” The Boys in the Band earned notoriety for being the first commercially successful play to portray gay men in all their glory and bitchiness. While the nasty banter in the play is uproariously funny, it led to a perception that all gay men are self-loathing and vicious to each other. “It’s cutting humour,” says Morton-Schuster. “There’s even racist things. Political correctness evaporates in that space.” Morton-Schuster should know: he describes his character as “the most outrageous, flamboyant one in the play. He’s the queen. He gets the sharpest lines, a lot of one-liners that we now use every day. It’s the most fun part to play.” Though The Boys debuted more than 40 years ago, MortonSchuster insists it is not a museum piece. “It’s surprisingly relevant,” he says. “A cross section of gay men who still exist in our community. They are dealing with internalized homophobia, the straight-acting versus the flamboyant. And that’s still a major problem; 1969 is still happening in 2011.” Director Randie Parliament is pleased that no controversy has resulted from this production. “It’s a gay piece, pre-AIDS, that just speaks of human characteristics,” he says. “It’s classic theatre, like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf or Noel Coward.” Parliament believes that what was shocking (ie gay men have lots of sex and can be bitchy) in the late ’60s has become humorous over time. “We all make snide comments,” he says of the joys of being a gay man. “We joke about everything. This is a piece about friendship. They go to a party as friends, things go awry, but they leave as friends. A gay man can appreciate wit and banter. This is a fun take, not a loathing one.”

Morton-Schuster agrees. “It’s about acceptance and the freedom one has within a supportive gay space. One that’s accepting but has a sense of humour about our differences and has less limitations. Gay parties are always more fun because we have that dialogue.” Not all gay parties go as seriously “awry” as this one does, and that is part of what has kept The Boys in the Band more stigmatized than staged. “This is a piece I had shied away from doing because of the controversy,” says Parliament. “No one could recall if it was ever done in Toronto. There was a read-through years ago and I was told it was done in the ’70s, but no record seems to exist.” The advance ticket sales suggest there’s plenty of support for the play’s return: “People are buying tickets in groups of 13,” says Parliament. “When Boys in the Band first came out there was an overwhelming response,” Morton-Schuster chimes in. “There were lineups around the block. Hordes of gay men clamouring for theatre that reflected their life. It’s still a slice of life we rarely see. At Soulpepper you can see a slice of life, but it won’t be gay.” Just as at a real party, the intimate confines of Buddies will enhance the experience. “Everyone will be right in the thick of things,” Parliament says. “It does need to be an intimate space. And a gay space,” adds Morton-Schuster. “It keeps it honest. Just going to Buddies is a party — and you can drink with us.” The Boys in the Band runs Tues, March 1 to Sun, March 6 at Buddies, 12 Alexander St. Info: ghostlightprojects.com Drew Rowsome is an associate editor at fab and loves a bitchy gay party where secrets and drinks are spilled.

Butch men in A Night at the Adonis.

Rick Donovan in The Bigger the Better.

F

or sure my favourite new TV show is going to be Saturday Night at the Bijou, HardTV’s vintage gay porn venture, which starts Saturday, March 5. Host Richard Ryder will take a page from Turner Classic Movies’ host Robert Osborne in that he will have a guest each week, and the two of them will discuss the stars, directors and hairstyles of such ’70s and ’80s classics as Centurions of Rome, A Night at the Adonis or The Bigger the Better. Imagine — Richard Ryder riffing on Lee Ryder. Saturdays will never be the same. Vintage gay porn seems to be everywhere all of a sudden. The Black Eagle regularly shows the classics, and Bruno Gmünder just published a gorgeous picture book called Porn: From Andy Warhol to X-Tube, by Kevin Clarke. The book is a comprehensive history, jampacked with colour plates of many famous gay pornstars. The title refers to Warhol’s 1969 film Blue Movie, the first theatrically

released feature to show hardcore sex, but certainly not the last. The porn industry may be in trouble due to the internet, but porn itself is never going away. Saturday Night at the Bijou takes its title from Bijou Films. The company has been around for 40 years and is still run by its original boss, Steve Toushin. “These films can never be duplicated in style, actor-type and sexual interpretation,” he says. If anyone is aware of porn’s history, it’s Toushin. The man’s been arrested on obscenity charges 21 times, the first for showing Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures in 1969. Nowadays, he is practically on a one-man mission to rescue the classics from oblivion. “I feel Bijou does a very good restoration. I have an excellent professional capture card, powerful computers and dedicated technicians who demand quality.” In the ’70s, porn was shot on film, either 8mm or 16mm, very often on short ends or expired film stock, which was cheaper. In most cases, the negatives no longer exist, and the best possible prints are often scratched or have sprocket or optical-track

damage, not to mention fading. “They didn’t know about lighting, film speed or aperture settings, so rendering and restoring many of these films is a challenge,” says Toushin.

In the ’80s, porn was shot on video, which also varies in format, from halfinch to Beta to VHS. The old video equipment was, well, shit, so many of these videos look horrible. But the impact was enormous. “Video created a 400-percent increase of gay films being made,” says Toushin. The whole nature of how porn was made and viewed changed almost overnight. The appeal of vintage gay porn seems to be that these films were made in a time before condom use became the industry standard. Toushin says viewers appreciate “the era of sexual freedom without harm, sex without fear.” But pre-condom is not the same as bareback, for which Toushin has little use. “The objective of barebacking films is to emphasize the non-usage of condoms and to show cum dripping out of an asshole and from a mouth,” he explains. “There is nothing wrong with cum, but I would rather see these young men not exposed to HIV.” Despite his strong stance against barebacking (his website includes a lengthy diatribe cautioning bareback filmmakers about the inevitable lawsuits and government intervention that loom in their future), Toushin would never entertain the idea of Dr. Elon Griffith withdrawing pre-condom porn from & Associates distribution. “It was a different era,” he Cosmetic & General Dentistry says. “You don’t destroy history.” And what a history it is. “From 1970 to about 1990, the industry was completely unregulated,” Toushin says, the most glaring example being the flagrant use of unlicensed pop tunes on many of the 416-923-3386 soundtracks. “In 1988 the feds tried to [email protected] eliminate porn when Bill 2257 went into law. Now, three pieces of ID are required of 25 Charles St. W. absolutely everyone in an adult film, even Toronto ON M4Y 2R4 the very old, and the fine is not a civil fine but a criminal one.” But no government initiative has ever been able to put the genie back in the bottle. TV screen to computer screen — have made porn ubiquitous, more popular than ever, practically mainstream. Even gay kids who live north of nowhere can get it instantly, which makes it even more important to remember the time when gay erotica was a rare and powerful thing. Vintage porn is an important part of our history. It’s what we looked like and how we got off back in the ’70s and ’80s, decades now long forgotten. The big appeal for me is the men themselves, men like Jack Wrangler, Al Parker, Chad Douglas. I like them because they looked like real men and not like the pumped-up waxed fruits working in porn today. Some of them even look drunk or high, just like in real life. There was no manscaping, no condoms and sometimes no erections, either. It was a simpler time. Toushin sent me a dozen films from his 250-title catalogue, and some of these movies are great. There’s Raw Country (1972), which features guys who look like they might be in some hippie band, like America or the Allman Brothers. There’s lots of applying of suntan lotion, a glass mobile hung in tree branches, sex on a swing and a rather brutal-looking rape. Raw Country is artsy and horny at the same time, a rare feat. Wanted (1982) features Jack Wrangler as a nasty prison warden who sodomizes guys on the chain gang until two of them escape. Screenplay (1984) stars Lee Ryder as a drifter who happens across a film set and has sex with just about everyone before finally settling down with the leading man. One scene shows Ryder being masturbated under a table

in a restaurant. No sucking, no fucking, and yet it remains an incredibly real and erotic scene. And A Night at the Adonis (1982) actually feels more like a real movie than a porno. Director Jack Deveau cared enough to rent a Steadicam for the opening shot. The characters are distinct, the acting is natural, and the script even references German arthouse director Fassbinder. That’s highbrow smut. There are some turkeys in the bunch, like the bizarre Michael, Angelo & David (1979). David, a hick from Italy, comes to New York to visit his Uncle Michael. In one gag, David asks a stranger to show him the Empire State Building; he shows David a miniature version and then seduces him. David sends home a postcard that reads, “The Empire State Building wasn’t as big as I thought it was.” At his going-away party, his own uncle has sex with him in front of everybody. Those Italians. But the hot session is interrupted by a phone call from Joan Crawford. I am not making this up. Then there’s the absolutely zany White Trash (1980), which starts with discordant piano music over a shot of a zonked hippie smelling roses, and it ends with two boys at a Led Zeppelin concert blowing each other as Robert Plant sings onstage. Good, bad or indifferent, do yourself a favour and watch Saturday Night at the Bijou. You might very well love it. At the least you’ll get a good laugh from all those ridiculous ’70s haircuts.

unnatural, rest assured that the companies manufacturing your new ass have done their homework — and your own butt may have been an unwitting subject. Jack Timlock of Toronto’s own Bottoms Up takes time out from staring out the window of the Church St Starbucks with a notepad to tell me, “After studying many butts, we realized that the left cheek is differently shaped than the right cheek. So in our desire to give the most natural look possible, we had moulds made to produce the desired effect we were looking for.” Your butt may now look perfectly and naturally pert with its new padding, but check that your motives are healthy. “I imagine that there’s some people wearing padded underwear and it’s relatively helpful to them psychologically,” says Segal. “But there might be another group of people who are struggling with body image issues and constantly feeling that on some level they’re not measuring up.” Rous doesn’t buy into that complexity. “There are two main reasons men wear padded underwear,” she snaps. “One, they need them, and two, they need them.” Christian agrees. “Men wear enhancing underwear because size does matter, and it gives them more confidence to feel sexy.” Assless wonder Hill sounds like he might be conflicted about his situation and could use some padding — but would he ever wear padded underwear? “Never to rope in the boys,” he says, “’because let’s face it, that is just the height of false advertising. How could anyone maintain their dignity when they’ve picked up a boy who thinks he’s gonna have a night of eating out a perfect ass only to find it hanging around the guy’s ankles along with his jock?”

Inside the Shock Jock Flirt.

Add some wattage to your rear end.

“I don’t focus on whether it’s deceptive to other people,” counters Segal. “I think more about the individual who’s wearing them and whether or not, on some level, they’re lying to themselves and whether they’re able to have a healthful perception of their body, or if they’re only able to enjoy their body if it’s masked in that way.” He also believes that the foam pads could deter a firm connection because your new ass may lessen your appeal. “Generally, people are drawn to authenticity,” Segal says. “It might strike that person as inauthentic, and that might get them wondering if there’s other ways in which you’re inauthentic. It might make you less desirable in some ways: when people are looking to make a connection with other people, they usually want a sense of authenticity.” Ass-man Anthony wouldn’t feel cheated if he brought a guy home and discovered his ass was supported. “My thought would be, ‘Well, isn’t that interesting,’” he says. “I would definitely not feel cheated. The person obviously felt they needed to enhance that area and they had the right to do it. Good for them. Why do we wear clothes that make us look slim or toned? It’s the same argument.”

BELLINI AT LARGE

My boyfriend’s bad and there’s gonna be trouble I

just read How to Raise a Boyfriend by Toronto writer Rebecca Eckler. It’s a funny how-to manual aimed at women who have to deal with loutish straight guys, often referred to as “husbands.” “My daughter is so easy to raise compared to the boys I’ve been with,” claims Eckler. So wouldn’t the same techniques she uses in raising her six-year-old daughter work on the men in her life? “Straight women invest too much time in thinking,” she admits. “We often believe that if he’s supposed to call at 10pm and it’s 10:02 then he’s fucking someone else.” Eckler divides her book into easy-to-digest sections about such things as why guys don’t say “please” and “thank you” or apologize for being late or forgetting birthdays, or their inability to pay a compliment or do the dishes. “I learned through this book,” says Eckler. “I learned that my expectations are high, but I’m attracted to the types of men who might not necessarily meet them.” It’s a common thing with women. “I would get groups of girls together on a patio in Yorkville, and I’d say, ‘How does he dress? Go!’ And they would rant. It was almost a competition as to who had the worst husband.” Eckler also spoke to her own ex-boyfriends, with fascinating results. “When confronted, they would say, ‘That didn’t happen.’ And I’d say, ‘This is why we’re not together.’” “How do you think they’ll respond to reading about themselves in the book?” I ask. “They’ll just have to man up. You feel bad for them, huh?” she asks. “I don’t feel bad for them at all. It’s a character flaw to not remember someone’s birthday. They wouldn’t behave like that with their bosses.” The very busy Eckler is also releasing a novel, The Lucky Sperm Club; she blogs every day and she once even hosted a TV show called Modern Manners. A few years ago, she

wrote a book called Knocked Up. It was about how she got drunk and got pregnant at her own engagement party and decided to keep the baby but not its father. Then one day she saw the poster for a movie called Knocked Up, starring Seth Rogan. Same title, same visual image of a martini glass with a soother instead of an olive and many of the same ideas. Had she been ripped off? Intellectual appropriation is very hard to prove in court, and the only thing Eckler can say is that “it was settled to the mutual satisfaction of both parties.” Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen with How to Raise a Boyfriend. Eckler is in the enviable position of making use of her own advice, as she is just starting a new relationship. “He’s still in the stage of buying me flowers and calling five times a day,” she says. “But he’s never read a book before in his life. Maybe this will be the first book he ever reads.” But not everyone gets the joke. A straight female friend of mine dislikes the book. “She needs to relax,” my friend says. “If I was a guy, I would never go out with her no matter how good she looks. As a woman, reading it, I felt like I was really past this type of thinking.” So what does Eckler’s book have to do with gay men? “Gay men have boyfriends,” she says. “This book is for anyone in a relationship.” My assumption is that most men are always looking for a mommy. They’re on their best behaviour when the chase is on, buying flowers and not farting in front of the beloved, but once settled, they fall into slobdom. More than anyone, Eckler would like the book to fall into the hands of new mothers. “Why? Because one day their sons might be dating my daughter, and I want them to be nice.” Or their sons might be dating her son. [email protected] fab March 2, 2011

• On the vogue stage, “Eyes, skin, teeth, structure, face. G’Zelle. Polaris,” are the chants I hear upon entering the Hugs & Kisses Kiki Ball held at the 519 Community Centre. Instead of the darkness of a club, the fourth-floor space is brightly lit and packed with contestants and observers sitting around several round tables arranged around the room to create a large runway. Vogue balls have a long history, and in Toronto the tradition is nurtured by one man in particular: Travoy Monroe-Hall, aka Father TKO G’Zelle. Dressed in red, pink and white, contestants take to the runway and compete for prizes and trophies in categories like Virgin Runway, Virgin Vogue, Male Figure School Boy Realness and OTA Face. “The virgin balls are places where new runway performers can compete,” DJ Blackcat says. It’s an experience that should not be missed. Check them out on Facebook by searching Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance. • On the stripper stage, the lineup to get in to Prism’s Release party at Flash is long and impressive. Inside, the coat-check line is just as long but far less impressive. This fairly new men-only “strip club” has likely never seen this number of people. “This will be the first of many events here,” Prism creative director Gairy Brown beams. “We love working with the owners [George Pratt and Gilles Berthelot] because they give back to the community.” Charming bartender Scott Fordham is all smiles as gorgeous faces, including Mathieu Chantelois, his partner, Marcelo Gowi, and the always head-turning Biko Beauttah, take over his bar. The music, by DJs Dwayne Minard and Jamal, becomes background beats as two fully erect performers take to the stage for a sultry sex show involving an ice cream cone. Vanilla-flavoured treats aren’t the only thing they’re sucking back. Curtains down and lights out. [email protected]

Fiery femme:

Phil Villeneuve: I’ve read the word “tribal” a few times in people’s descriptions of the album... Have you guys all turned into wild jungle animals of pop? Tim Hoey: One of the major influences for this record was Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo. In particular the scene where they pull the steamboat over the mountain in the Amazon. We actually brought that film into the studio and projected it onto the wall and composed music for it. Most of those sessions ended up becoming the interludes on the record. It was about capturing the rhythm and sensuousness of the jungle. PV: You have a huge gay following… TH: Our music is for everyone. From the gay community to bored middle-class housewives to Goth kids who take a guilty pleasure in pop music. We don’t discriminate in real life, so we’re not about to start doing so in our art. We have a lot of love to give. Plus, we’re big fans of disco music, which was seen as a lynchpin to gay liberation. We completely understand the discrimination the gay community has been subjected to over the years, and we’re strong supporters of the cause. Hopefully our music can be some kind of soundtrack to such a thing. PV: One of the things I love with this album is you sign off with the absolutely massive song “Sun God.” How do you know when to stop when creating a 15-minute opus? TH: “Sun God” was all about creating a totally immersive listening experience, where time becomes irrelevant. The idea was that the record begins as this transcendental meditation, “Need You Now,” and ends in this euphoric hedonistic freak-out, “Sun God.” In this iTunes generation it feels like career suicide to create a 15-minute opus. We know it’s not going to be for everyone, but we felt like “Sun God” deserved every 15 of the minutes that are on the record. Hopefully we can release the 45-minute version one day, which was its original length. Cut Copy performs on Thurs, April 7 at the Sound Academy, 11 Polson St. Info: cutcopy.net

lose your eyes and listen to Adele’s new album, 21, and you’ll swear it is Aretha’s horny, illegitimate British daughter, just crawled out of some humid Louisiana swamp for some lovin’ and forgiveness. Adele’s got more blues than a jeans store, more soul than any other 22-year-old I know of, and she also writes a damned good love song. She killed at this year’s Brit Awards with “Someone Like You,” a heart-wrenching ballad about an old boyfriend (it’s also a number that’s praying for a giant clubanthem remix). So what if she credits her North American success to Sarah Palin? (Adele was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live the same night Palin appeared next to her infamous impersonator, Tina Fey.) As insane — and cold — as that sounds, there are shows worth checking out. The Queer Showcase on Wednesday, March 9 is a night of gays at the Gladstone, including performances from golden-throated indie-cherub Gentleman Reg, Montreal’s sassy Creature, sexy synth-trio Rouge, soulful folk-rock cutie Chris Velan and piano-pop wunderkind Kevin Wong. Another CMW must is MEN at Sneaky Dee’s on Saturday, March 12. Gay activist JD Samson and crew threaten to cave in the dancefloor with a set that will showcase songs from their new album, Talk About Body. The same night, android-soul-princess Janelle Monáe will throw it down. Info: cmw.net tunes @fabmagazine.com fab March 2, 2011

TOGETHER

Heroine Marks

‘He’s my alter ego. I wasn’t interested in writing an autobiography.’

S

ince starting this column, I’ve interviewed happy couples, miserable couples, drag queens and promoters looking for a cheap plug. But this coupling is by far one of the most unconventional I’ve encountered. Rodney and Roman are two men so alike one could say they’re the same person. Roman is the main character of Rodney’s new dark comedy, His Imposing Visage, debuting Friday, April 15 at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Rodney created Roman when he needed a voice to share his story. Rodney had been sexually assaulted by an HIV-positive assailant and didn’t know how to cope with his ordeal. “I lost my voice; I couldn’t speak up. I told virtually no one

and I suffered in silence,” he says. “So I did the only thing I could think of to get through it: I made art, and in doing so I found a new voice, a stronger voice. And I’m not afraid to use it.” For almost three years, Rodney struggled to bring Roman to life by working through his residual feelings. “Roman’s a textbook narcissist,” he says. “I had to find the humour in this.” He met his Roman during the audition process when he first shook hands with actor Raffaele Ciampaglia. “You wanted to be there,” says Raffaele of his audition. “There was a lot of heart in the room. It is a story that needs to be told. It’s about making peace with yourself and giving yourself that permission.”

Rodney & Roman - more than two years

“I

still hold on to my small-town values but love the big city,” David says. “I moved here after university to start a career and to immerse myself in a place that actually has gay culture. I’ve lived here three and a half years now and still love it. Toronto never ceases to surprise me.” David likes to go dancing and spends his free time playing volleyball with the TSVL and singing with the Toronto Gay Men’s Chorus. When it comes to men, David says his ideal candidate has to be “intelligent, make me laugh and have good hygiene.” He’d also like “beautiful eyes I can get lost in, a smile that makes me smile and a furry chest.” His biggest turnoff is men with attitudes. “I don’t like gay men who love to bitch and judge others,” he says. “That kind of attitude, even done in jest, isn’t sexy. I want a gentleman.” More photos by Drasko Bogdanovic at draskobogdanovic.ca
