Installation vs. Upgrade Service There is a difference between the Installation service for first time installation of a ¼ or ½ rack Exadata and the Upgrade service. The difference between an Installation service and an Upgrade service (required when expanding or upgrading from ¼ to ½ rack and ½ to full rack) is significant. An Installation includes plugging in a prebuilt Exadata rack. An Upgrade requires manually building and cabling a quarter or half rack (servers and storage cells) into an existing Exadata rack. It's a much greater effort on-site. An Upgrade service is also more costly than the Installation because of the on-site engineering effort. With installs, upgrades are priced from the ACS install pricing tool linked from the Exadata price list. The cost of upgrading a quarter/half rack to half/full rack includes two components (hardware installation/ upgrade and software configuration). The cost of the hardware component for upgrading two racks is double the price of one rack i.e. no "discount" for quantity. The cost of the software configuration component for upgrading two racks is less than double the price of one rack - so a "discount for quantity" is calculated in. The Configuration service is required to complete the upgrade as the new database and storage servers must be configured to be incorporated into the existing RAC cluster. You will find in the section 8 of the Oracle Exadata Database Machine Owner's Guide, the upgrade process, with description of the tasks, activities, and verification steps. back to top
