History of Windows •

In 1975, Gates and Allen form a partnership called Microsoft. Microsoft vision—a computer on every desktop and in every home. During the next years, Microsoft begins to change the ways we work.

Evolution of the Windows In 1981 IBM ships PC running MS-DOS, it introduces a whole new language to the general public. MS-DOS is effective, but also proves difficult to understand for many people. There has to be a better way to build an operating system

1982-1985: windows 1.0 is introduced. It includes GUI and comes loaded with extra components such as MS-DOS file management, Paint, Windows Writer, Notepad, Calculator, and a calendar, card file, and clock

1987 –1992:

Windows 2.0 comes to life It includes: desktop icons and expanded memory Control Panel makes its first appearance in Windows 2.0.

1990 –1994: Windows 3.0 –Windows NT

offers better performance, advanced graphics with 16 colors, and improved icons also Program Manager, File Manager, and Print Manager are introduced

 WINDOWS 95 Windows 95 is the upgrade to these operating systems. To run Windows 95, you need a PC with a 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended) and at least 4 MB of RAM (8 MB of RAM recommended). It’s available in 12 languages. features the first appearance of the Start menu, taskbar, and minimize, maximize, and close buttons on each window. it has built-in Internet support, dial-up networking, and new Plug and Play capabilities that make it easy to install hardware and software. The 32-bit operating system also offers enhanced multimedia capabilities, more powerful features for mobile computing, and integrated networking.

1998 –2000: Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me

Windows 98 the last version based on MS-DOS. improvements : ability to open & close programs more quickly, support for reading DVD discs &USB devices. the Quick Launch bar •





Windows Me The Last to be based on Win95code base. Improvements: System Restore Better networking and multimedia capabilities •



Windows 2000 Based on WinNT Workstation 4.0 code base Plug & Play hardware, advanced networking & wireless products, IEEE 1394 devices, infrared devices.

Windows Xp Launched in October 2001 Key Features include: remote desktop support, an encrypting file system system restore advanced networking features. Key enhancements for mobile users include: wireless 802.1x networking support, Windows Messenger, Remote Assistance. one of its best-selling products. •

















Win XP 64-bit Edition (2001) is the first Microsoft OS designed for operating 64-bit processors Win XP Media Center Edition (2002) for computing and entertainment Win XP Tablet PC Edition (2002)
