Learning activity 4 Evidence: My presentation outline A. Find a topic of personal interest. Imagine you are going to present that topic orally to your teacher and classmates at school. For this part of the evidence you need to carry out exhaustive research in order to be able to present all the necessary information related to your selected topic. Report the most important aspects of your research through a brainstorm of the ideas and concepts that you think will be relevant to the presentation. Brainstorm Example of topic: Aviation.  Aviation refers to the use of commercial and non-commercial aircrafts for transportation of people or goods.  The A380, manufactured by the Airbus Industry, is the biggest plane ever made.

In 1911, the Colombians had the opportunity to appreciate an aircraft for the first time thanks to the exhibition attributed to two pilots: Frenchman Paul Miltgen and Colombian José Cicerón Castillo. One year after the first attempts to fly over to Bogota, on December 29, 1912, arrived in Barranquilla, under the auspices of Barranquilla merchant José Víctor Dugand Gnecco, pilot John Smith, a young man of twenty-one years old. On January 26, 1913 Smith made the first clearly documented flight in Colombia. He flew over Medellin, with the same plane he apparently used in Barranquilla. The first attempt to form an aviation company in Colombia dates back to the first days of September 1919 in Manizales, where Vicente Gutierrez and a group of merchants from the city founded the Air Navigation Company. From 1920, when commercial aviation was only beginning to be strengthened in the world, Colombia took significant steps in this direction welcoming it to this new means of transport that allowed to overcome geographic barriers in the short term. 1923-1939. During these years several airlines were founded in the cities of Bogota, Bucaramanga, Cali, Medellín and Villavicencio, dedicated to the transportation of cargo, mail and passengers. 1931. The Colombian-German Air Transport Society, SCADTA, established the first airmail service between Bogotá and New York. 1937. SCADTA acquired twin-engine aircraft, such as the Boeing 247, to expand and cover its domestic routes and in 1939 DC3 aircraft, the first to fly at high speed. 1940. In Barranquilla was founded Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A., Avianca, from the merger of the companies Scadta and Colombian Air Service, Saco. 1940-1950. Approximately 17 airlines were established, which continued to offer cargo, mail and passenger transportation, as well as aerial photography in various parts of the country. 1951. Avianca acquired the biggest and fastest planes of the time, like a Lockheed Constellation 0749 and a Super Constellation 1049L. 1962. Under decree 940 the Air Service airline was created to the National Territories, SATENA, special air service that would cover the underdeveloped regions of the country. 1980. Aerovias de Integración Regional S.A., AIRES was created under an alliance between Huilenses and tolimenses entrepreneurs.

1981. The modern AVIANCA Aerial Bridge terminal was inaugurated, where the air routes to the cities of Miami and New York were internationally covered, and at national level the routes to the cities of Cali, Medellín, Pasto, Montería, Cartagena and Bucaramanga. With time would only cover the routes at national level. 1994. The strategic alliance was formed between Avianca, the Aeronautical Society of Medellín, SAM, and National Helicopters of Colombia, HELICOL, called the Avianca System. El Dorado Airport is part of the urban and architectural history of Colombia and Bogota. From the beginning of its construction in the 50's until the current stage of modernization and expansion has been a symbol of the cosmopolitan development of the city. Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport is the international airport serving Barranquilla, Colombia. It owes its name to one of the pioneers of aviation in the world, Ernesto Cortissoz. It was inaugurated in 1979 and has been in operation since 1981. José María Córdova International Airport is located in Rionegro – Antioquia. It was inaugurated on June 30, 1985

B. Now, structure your presentation using the Signpost language learnt during this learning activity. Present your outline through presentation cards. Use as many cards as you need.

Remember: Each presentation card should include a heading, a phrase at the bottom, a number and it should be organized by numbering and bulleting.

(Model)

Aviation [heading] Structure: I’m going to divide this talk into five parts. Early beginnings. Civil aviation. Commercial aviation. Modern aircrafts manufacturers: a. Airbus. b. Boeing. c. Embraer. 5. The most famous aircrafts in history: a. Concorde. b. Boeing 747. c. Airbus A380. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Let’s turn now to the first part: the early beginnings of aviation… 1 [Bottom phrase]

History of aviation in Colombia In this presentation we will talk about the history of aviation in Colombia I’m going to divide this talk into three parts. 1. Pioneers of aviation in the country. 2. Aviation companies in Colombia, 1919-1950. 3. Main airports of the country.

Let’s turn now to the first part: Pioneers of aviation in the country. 1

History of aviation in Colombia 1. Pioneers of aviation in the country. • In 1911, the Colombians had the opportunity to appreciate an aircraft for the first time thanks to the exhibition attributed to two pilots: Frenchman Paul Miltgen and Colombian José Cicerón Castillo. • One year after the first attempts to fly over to Bogota, on December 29, 1912, arrived in Barranquilla, under the auspices of Barranquilla merchant José Víctor Dugand Gnecco, pilot John Smith, a young man of twenty-one years old. • On January 26, 1913 Smith made the first clearly documented flight in Colombia. He flew over Medellin, with the same plane he apparently used in Barranquilla. The next point is more interesting as we will talk about the second part: Aviation companies in Colombia, 1919-1950. 2

History of aviation in Colombia 2. Aviation companies in Colombia, 1919-1950. • The first attempt to form an aviation company in Colombia dates back to the first days of September 1919 in Manizales, where Vicente Gutierrez and a group of merchants from the city founded the Air Navigation Company. • From 1920, when commercial aviation was only beginning to be strengthened in the world, Colombia took significant steps in this direction welcoming it to this new means of transport that allowed to overcome geographic barriers in the short term. • 1923-1939. During these years several airlines were founded in the cities of Bogota, Bucaramanga, Cali, Medellín and Villavicencio, dedicated to the transportation of cargo, mail and passengers. • 1931. The Colombian-German Air Transport Society, SCADTA, established the first airmail service between Bogotá and New York. • 1937. SCADTA acquired twin-engine aircraft, such as the Boeing 247, to expand and cover its domestic routes and in 1939 DC3 aircraft, the first to fly at high speed. • 1940. In Barranquilla was founded Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A., Avianca, from the merger of the companies Scadta and Colombian Air Service, Saco. • 1940-1950. Approximately 17 airlines were established, which continued to offer cargo, mail and passenger transportation, as well as aerial photography in various parts of the country. • 1951. Aerovias de Integración Regional S.A., AIRES was created under an alliance between Huilenses and tolimenses entrepreneurs.

And finally we have the third part of the presentation: Main airports of the country. 3

History of aviation in Colombia 3. Main airports of the country. • 1981. • 1994. From the beginning of its construction in the 50's until the current stage of modernization and expansion has been a symbol of the cosmopolitan development of the city. In other words, we are pioneers of aviation in Latin America, nowadays we have modern infrastructure with advanced technology in our airports to operate a national and international level.

Thank you so much!
