Disclaimer This guide is for reference purposes only. I am not a doctor, nor a herbalist. I have spent many years learning about herbs and researching their properties, but I am not an herbalist. I do believe that families can safely use herbs and essential oils to treat many ailments and prevent illness. However, I also believe that it is important to consult with a professional about illnesses that you are unsure of for a proper diagnosis and to discuss a healthy treatment plan. Essential oils should be used with respect to their potency, especially with pregnant women and children. I am not responsible for any claims, damages, losses, judgments, expenses, costs, injuries, actions or outcome resulting from the use of any products or recipes in this book.

Save Money with Essential Oils I use essential oils every day in my home (bus). With four small children, whatever I use has to be simple, fast, safe and effective. And it also has to save us money. Lots of it. I read a few months ago that the average American family of four spends $9144 on healthcare each year. So I got to work to figure out how much my family of six spent. I tallied up: • Chiropractor visits • Naturopath appointments • doTERRA essential oil orders - I order about $150 worth of product each month on the company’s Loyalty Rewards Program. I earn a percentage of each order (I’ve topped out at 30%) in free product credits. To date, I’ve earned over $500 in free product. No wait, more than that, because I also get the free product of the month and frequently qualify for other special incentives. I also get a check every time I share the oils with others and they decide to use them to simplify their family’s healthcare. I love doTERRA. The total? Just over $2100 (and most of these were appointments for me). That’s the same amount the average person spends each year on healthcare. And are they any healthier for it? No, I don’t think so. While some may balk at the cost of essential oils, just keep something in mind: we’re talking pennies per dose here. Many essential oils will last for quite a long time, meaning one $20 bottle of oil can last months, depending on how much you use it. Since we started using essential oils, we rarely get sick. And when we do, it doesn’t last long at all. Recently, we visited a friend whose family had just gotten over a horrible flu. I was told that everyone was throwing up for a minimum of 3 days and it took a few days to recover after that. Two days later, my first kiddo woke up vomiting. She threw up intermittently throughout the night and once in Nina Nelson

the morning. By that afternoon, she felt almost normal. Repeat x3. Same outcome. As soon as we got home, I’d started using On Guard on my kids’ feet to boost their immune system. When they did get sick, I continued to use it every few hours on them until they were better. DigestZen helped their upset tummies. Did I get sick? No. I used On Guard as if my life depended on it (well, a plane ticket, hotel room and convention ticket were on the line) and while my stomach felt upset for a few hours one night, I managed to avoid it. We avoid a LOT of doctor visits and prescriptions here.

Essential Accessories When I first got my essential oils, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with them. But, because I love researching and telling my husband, “So I was reading …,” I quickly figured out what to do and have been using them daily ever since. Since then, I’ve learned that some “accessories” are more helpful than others and some are just plain essential to using essential oils (every time I type that, I giggle a little). These are the accessories I find most helpful for using essential oils in my home:

1. Carrier Oil A carrier oil dilutes your essential oils, making them safer to use on more sensitive areas or on children. A good carrier oil is also required for stronger essential oils, like oregano, that need to be diluted so they don’t irritate your skin. My favorite carrier oil to use is coconut oil, because I already cook with it and it’s easy to just scoop out a little bit and keep it in a jar for when I need a carrier oil. Other oils you could use are almond, jojoba, grapeseed, etc.

2. Guidebook A good guidebook is essential because you need to know how and when to use which oils. I have two favorite resources. One is actually a website, called Everything Essential. The other is a book I purchased, called Modern Wellness.

Nina Nelson

www.shalommama.com

6

Both are specific to doTERRA essential oils, which is one reason I like them so much. I also like that they recommend a few oils to try, which I’ve found helpful if I didn’t have one they recommended or to avoid one oil from losing effectiveness over time (think lavender at night for calming – you might want to rotate between that and another oil). If you don’t use doTERRA essential oils, check Amazon.com to see if there’s a guidebook specific to the brand you use. Everything Essential can be used whether you use doTERRA or not.

3. Diffuser A diffuser is great for aromatherapy purposes. If you don’t have a diffuser, you can put oils in the palm of your hand, cup them over your nose and inhale deeply (you can also just smell from the bottle). There are many types of diffusers and you can check out what’s available by visiting www.aromatools.com. I prefer the diffusers that have a chamber you add water and essential oils to. The fine mist quickly permeates small spaces, like our bus, and is great for use in your home.

4. Empty Capsules The essential oils I use have been deemed safe for internal consumption and one way I do that is via a capsule. When I’m feeling sick, I’ll put some OnGuard in a capsule and take that. I’ve also used oils in capsules for treating a few other ailments and they worked really well. Empty capsules can be found online or in your local health food store. (Note: Not all essential oils can be taken internally – make sure the ones you are using can be. Also, remember, I’m not a doctor. Do your research before taking anything medicinally. Empower yourself.)

5. Storage Box After I’d purchased several essential oils, I realized that I’d need a place to keep them all.Fortunately, I have a pretty wooden box my Grandpa made for me that fits my oils perfectly. Well, it used to anyway … You can look around your house and see if you can find a good storage box for your oils (make sure it’s sturdy and has a lid). You could also check out second hand stores or the interweb. (doTERRA has storage boxes available separately or as part of an enrollment kit.)

6. Roll-On Bottles I put on a blend of oils each morning with one simple little swipe. Last year, I ordered some empty roll-on bottles that I love to use for blending oils, either for specific ailments or my daily routine. I think it’s easiest to find them online at places like Amazon.com or www.aromatools.com.

7. Sample Vials Sample vials have two purposes for me. First, I like to share essential oils. Some of you have received packages from me with little vials of essential oils because I love you and these oils and love giving gifts. Other times, I share them with people who I know would benefit from the oils. Sample vials make sharing oils super easy to do. (I like 1/4 dram the best.) I also use them in my first aid kit and take a sampler set with me wherever I go. I like the sample vials because it allows me to have the oils I need in multiple places without having to buy bigger bottles (that wouldn’t get used as often). Nina Nelson

How to Use Essential Oils When I first started using essential oils, it was mainly to give my homemade cleaners some extra power. Now, I use them daily for a number of reasons: prevention, cleaning, cooking, treating illness. I love, love, love essential oils and I want to share them with everyone because of how they’ve impacted my life. So ... what are essential oils anyway? Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants. Each contains its own mix of active ingredients, and this mix determines what the oil is used for. Some oils are used to promote physical healing -- for example, to treat swelling or fungal infections. Others are used for their emotional value -- they may enhance relaxation or make a room smell pleasant. There are 3 common ways to use essential oils:

Aromatically Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for healing. Although the word “aroma” makes it sound as if the oils are inhaled, they can also be massaged into the skin or -- rarely -- taken by mouth. Whether inhaled or applied on the skin, essential oils are gaining new attention as an alternative treatment for infections, stress, and other health problems. Essential oils can also be used aromatically for cleaning. One study I found in PubMed summarized how a hospital was able to kill a wide variety of common pathogens by simply diffusing essential oils in the air. Most were killed in the first hour, while some took up to 24. To use essential oils aromatically, you can: • Diffuse oils in a special essential oil diffuser • Apply 1-2 drops essential oils to the palms of your hands, rub them together then cup your hands over your nose and inhale deeply.

9

Topically Another way to use essential oils is to apply them topically. This is typical for skin conditions, headaches, muscles pain and a number of other reasons. Here are some tips for applying essential oils topically: • Add a few drops of fractionated coconut oil, olive oil or other carrier oil to increase essential oil absorption in the skin. • Do a small skin test to make sure there isn’t a sensitivity. If there is, dilute with a carrier oil. • Rub/massage the oils into the affected area if possible to increase blood flow to the site so the oils can enter the bloodstream faster. • Dilute essential oils for kids and/or apply them to the bottoms of their feet.

Internally Not all essential oil brands can be used internally. In fact, I know of less than 5 that promote using their oils internally. The brand that I use and love is doTERRA. doTERRA markets their oils as safe for consumption (with caution and previous research, of course) and I’ve used a number of them for different ailments, including: • UTI • Upset stomach • Detoxifying • Digestive system healing • Hormone balancing Here are some tips for using essential oils internally: • Use a brand that is safe for using internally. It will say on the bottle if it’s ok. (I highly recommend doTERRA as they do numerous tests to insure oils are 100% pure and free from harmful additives and contaminants that are found in other essential oils.)

• Take essential oils in an empty capsule (for further instructions, look up your specific health concern on everythingessential.me.) • Add 1 drop to 4 oz. of water • Use one drop sublingually (under the tongue). Again, do your research first to make sure it’s an oil you want to do that with. I love everythingessential.me.

Using Essential Oils with Kids It’s important to take special care when using any natural remedy with children and essential oils are no exception. Because essential oils are so concentrated and potent, it’s important to keep them out of reach of children when you can’t supervise their use of oils and to do your research before using essential oils on your children. However, I think it’s also important to teach your children how to use essential oils properly and let them apply their oils whenever possible. One of my favorite ways to do this is with a roller bottle. I like to put lavender essential oil in a roller bottle and let them apply it to the bottoms of their feet before bed. They love being able to do this. The great thing about using essential oils with your kids and empowering them to use them themselves, is that they are quick to learn how to use essential oils and which ones they need. I hear often, “Mama, I need ______ oil for ______.” Kids love essential oils. Before you start using essential oils with your kids, read over these tips for best results: • Dilute! - Use 1 drop essential oil to 4 drops carrier oil. Not all essential oils need to be diluted, especially doTERRA ones, but dilute if you’re not sure about how kids’ skin will react. • Bottoms of feet – The bottoms of the feet have really thick skin that’s not so sensitive, but when you apply oils there, they get absorbed quickly. Bonus points if you know reflexology and can apply oils to the corresponding affected area. Super strong oils, like oregano, definitely need to be diluted, even on adults, and applied to the feet. • Use caution - treat essential oils like you would any other medicine and keep them out of reach of children unless you are supervising their use. Even though they’re natural, they still need to be used with care.

• Use a guide - I’m a huge fan of the Modern Essentials book and Everythingessential.me. Both are great resources for using essential oils with your family.

How to Use the Family Physician Kit While these oils are doTERRA specific, you can still use them for the same purposes using other pure essential oils (I just want people to use essential oils!). Just a note – when I use the oils, I start with one drop unless I’m using a recipe that says to do otherwise. These oils really do go a long way because you need so little at once for them to be effective.

Lavender The calming essential oil. We use lavender essential oil a LOT to help calm our crazy kids and induce peaceful sleep. I also use it to relieve stress and apply it neat to burns and wounds – it helps take the pain away very quickly. • Apply to temples, bottoms of feet or pillow cases before bed. • Apply to temples with frankincense to take away headaches and relieve stress. • Apply to burns and wounds to ease pain. • Diffuse in your house for calm. • Add some to a soothing sleep balm to use before bed. • Add to baths (with epsom salts) for extra relaxation.

Peppermint doTERRA’s peppermint smells SO good. It’s the oil that sold me on this company. I’ve used it to help relieve nausea, increase energy and ease headaches. • Add a few drops to water for energy boost (1 drop per 4 oz.) • Apply to temples for headache relief. • Inhale deeply to help relieve nausea. • Apply to bottoms of feet to reduce high fevers. 14

• Diffuse aromatically to help your house smell yummy.

Breathe I think my oldest daughter is Breathe’s biggest fan. She’s even faked a cough to use it. This essential oil works very well at clearing up coughs and helping you breathe during a cold. • Apply topically to your neck and chest to clear sinuses. • Diffuse aromatically when someone has a cough or cold. • Apply to the bottoms of feet or chest when someone has a cough or cold.

Melaleuca Melaleuca or tea tree oil is a great antimicrobial essential oil that belongs in every home. I use it on rashes and sometimes my scalp, to heal ear infections and to clean my house. • Apply neat around the base of the ear to treat ear infections naturally. (This is the only reason I’ll use it on my kids, otherwise I keep it out of their reach – make sure they do not ingest it). • Add several drops to your homemade shampoo. • Add to cleaning spray recipes to help kill germs. • Use on skin rashes to help with itching and speed healing. • Apply to toes and feet to kill athlete’s foot (I made a special mix for my brother with lots of melaleuca and he said it works great – he typically makes fun of my “hippie ways”).

15

DigestZen This is the oil that sold my husband on essential oils. DigestZen is my goto oil for upset stomachs, whether it’s from a stomach bug or if I ate something I shouldn’t have (like gluten). • Drop one drop under your tongue to relieve stomach pain. Repeat every ten minutes until it works for serious stomach pain. • Apply to your abdomen to relieve stomach pain and gas. • Apply to the bottoms of feet (my kids’ preference) for digestive discomfort.

Oregano Oregano essential oil doesn’t come out much in our house, mainly because we don’t get sick often. When we do, however, oregano plays an important part in helping us heal. • Add 5 drops to an empty gelatin or vegetable capsule for immune support or to help fight infection. • Apply diluted to the bottoms of feet to help fight illness (you will smell like pizza sauce). • Use internally (in a capsule) once a month to help cleanse your digestive tract.

Lemon I love citrus scents, especially doTERRA’s lemon. It smells just like a fresh lemon. I use it in my house for degreasing and cleaning. It’s also great to help lift your mood and detoxify. • Add a drop to honey to soothe a dry or sore throat. • Diffuse in rooms to get rid of odors and to lift your mood. • Apply neat to remove sticky residue (like tree pitch from your hands or clay from your dining table) • Add to dish water to degrease dishes and remove smells from cutting boards. • Add to water to detoxify internally. • Rub over throat for sore or scratchy throat. (Dilute with kids.)

On Guard I think of this blend as my immune system supporter. I apply it daily as a defense against illness, use it liberally when we are sick and use it with lemon and melaleuca to keep things clean at home. • Add a drop to your toothbrush for clean gums and teeth. • Apply to the bottoms of your feet for immune system support. • Diffuse aromatically to kill air-borne pathogens. • Add to cleaning spray to clean surfaces. • Add 5 drops to a gelatin capsule when you’re not feeling well.

Deep Blue This blue essential oil is helpful for aches and pains. My favorite application is as a sore muscle rub, especially when I can get my husband to give me a massage. • Dilute with coconut oil to make a sore muscle rub. (Don’t apply after you get out of the bath!!!) • Apply to aching joints for relief. • Rub on muscles before or after exercise to reduce soreness.

Frankincense This is now one of my favorite essential oils. I use it regularly to relieve stress and deal with any headaches that might pop up. It also gets added to my baths with lavender and epsom salts for a super relaxing experience. • Apply to minor cuts to speed healing and relieve pain. • Apply to bug bites and stings for immediate pain relief. • Add to baths for extra relaxation. • Apply to temples with lavender to relieve stress and headaches. • Apply to the bottoms of feet for immune system support. • Dilute with coconut oil and spot treat 1-2 times a day to reduce scars.

Essential Oils Remedies for Common Ailments The following remedies are based on what I’ve used successfully in my own home, as well as information compiled from everythingessential.me and other essential oil consultants.

Ear Infections I’ve used this remedy a handful of times, with great success each time. • Apply 1-2 drops of melaleuca essential oil around the base of the ear every 3-4 hours for 1-2 days (pain subsides quickly, but I keep applying a day or two after just in case). Keep melaleuca out of reach of kids so they don’t accidentally ingest it, which can be harmful to them.

Tooth Pain We’ve treated tooth pain a few times with the following remedies: • 1-2 drops each of Clove and OnGuard to painful area (dilute for kiddos in about 1 tbsp carrier oil) as a pain reliever • Oil Pulling: Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil (or olive oil) in the mouth for 10 -15 minutes and then spit (do not swallow!) Add a drop of lemon or peppermint for taste. • doTERRA Lifelong Vitality Pack (helps to replenish important nutrients) • doTERRA Bone Complex (also helps replenish important minerals) I also recommend checking out Cure Tooth Decay by Rami Nagel if you frequently struggle with tooth pain and/or cavities.

Acne Skin problems, including breakouts, can frequently be caused by problems in the digestive system. Hormone imbalance and a over-worked liver also contribute to acne breakouts. I highly recommend a holistic approach with acne - using diet, supplements and topical treatments. • Oil Cleansing Method: Add 2 drops melaleuca, 1 drop lavender, 1 drop Geranium (Check out this oil cleansing tutorial). • Detoxify by adding 1-2 drops Lemon essential oil to your drinking water. • doTERRA’s Clear Skin blend - Rosewood, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lemongrass, Melaleuca, Black cumin seed. Apply topically and rub into the skin. Also good for athlete’s foot, itchy scalp and nail fungus. • Don’t eat chemicals - Focus on a diet of nourishing, real food made without chemicals. • doTERRA’s ClaryCalm - This essential oil blend contains Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Fennel, Carrot Seed, Palmarosa, Vitex and is great for helping with hormone imbalance. Apply topically a few times a day. Consider a low-glycemic diet to help with hormonal imbalance.

Headaches When I get a headache, I apply one of the following essential oil remedies and then try to figure out the cause. Usually I need to eat, drink some water or cut back on coffee. • doTERRA’s Past Tense blend - roll onto your head where it hurts. • Peppermint - apply to temples and forehead and rub in • Lavender & Frankincense - layer these two oils over pain points and rub it in (add to peppermint if necessary)

Nina Nelson

20

Stress Stress is unavoidable, but I found by using the following oils twice a day helps me cope with it MUCH better. • Frankincense • Lavender • Balance blend Apply 1 drop of each oil to the bottom of each foot, rub them in. You can also put a drop of frankincense and lavender in your hands, rub them together, cup your hands over your nose, then inhale deeply a few times.

Upset stomach Essential oils have made a huge difference in how we take care of upset stomachs, whether they’re caused by illness or food. • Peppermint - Inhale deeply a few times or add a drop to 4 oz. water or take a few drops in a capsule. • DigestZen - This is the blend that won my husband over to essential oils. It works FAST. You can put a few drops in a capsule, put 1-2 drops under your tongue, add 1 drops to 4 oz. water and/or rub it over the pain in your stomach. doTERRA just released DigestZen soft gels, too, that make this even easier to use.

Diabetes The following protocol is recommended by doTERRA’s chief medical adviser, Dr. Hill: • Lifelong Vitality Pack - use as recommended. • Rub 2 drops Balance on the bottoms of each foot in the morning (increases circulation). • Take 8-10 drops of Coriander and/or Basil in a capsule during the day. Nina Nelson

www.shalommama.com

21

• Consider 2 drops of OnGuard in the above capsule as well (I recommend adding this). • Rub 2 drops of Lavender on the bottoms of each foot at night.

Muscle Pain Exercise is great, but the resulting muscle pain can be anything but. You can also try these recommendations for chronic muscle pain. • Deep Blue Rub (so awesome!!!) - apply as needed, except for after baths - the open pores will soak this stuff right up, meaning some serious pain. Don’t ask me how I know. • Peppermint: Dilute 3 drops in a tablespoon of coconut oil and massage as needed into sore muscles. (Another one you shouldn’t apply after a bath.) • Hot baths with epsom salts (add a few drops of lavender to the epsom salts and stir in before adding to the bath) • Lifelong Vitality Pack - provides nutrients that can help prevent muscle pain. (I cannot recommend the LLV enough!)

Hot Flashes/Night Sweats Menopause can bring with it a whole host of unpleasant symptoms. Thankfully, these protocols have been given positive reviews: • Apply Whisper blend to the ears daily or more often. • Horrible hot flashes - apply Whisper and Ylang Ylang to neck and ears (like perfume) morning and night. • Balance, Clary Sage (Geranium even worked better), and Peppermint on the back of the neck every morning.  Reapply Geranium and Peppermint mid afternoon or more often if needed. • Apply ClaryCalm daily to the chest, back of the neck or abdomen to help with hormonal imbalance.

Nina Nelson

www.shalommama.com

22

• Life Long Vitality supplements taken on a consistent basis provide foundational support for hormonal balance. (Seriously, this stuff is awesome.) • For relief during a hot flash episode Peppermint applied to the back of the neck (and even the soles of the feet) has an immediate cooling effect.

Obviously, this is only a short list of ailments, many of which we’ve dealt with in our own home. For more suggestions, visit Everything Essential.

How to Get Essential Oils Free As you know, I love doTERRA and I’ve finally gotten over my fear of sharing them with people. Why? Because they work. And I’ve seen them bless so many friends and family members that I can’t not share them. So here’s what I recommend, whether you just want a 25% discount on products, to earn your products for free by sharing part-time or to earn a full-time income: Become a doTERRA Independent Product Consultant. There are lots of benefits: • 25% discount on products • Loyalty Rewards Program to help you earn free product credits • Simplified healthcare for the whole family • Receive a 15 mL bottle of peppermint essential oil when you pay the $25 annual renewal fee • Opportunity to earn extra income by sharing doTERRA with friends and family • Ability to teach classes to spread the word about natural wellness using pre-made doTERRA classes and products

There are a few different ways to get free essential oils with doTERRA: • doTERRA enrollment kit with oils (certain enrollment kits include free oils and Loyalty Rewards Program points): These kits allow you to buy in bulk and save even more money. Some kits also give you free product credits to use and start you off earning a higher percentage in the Loyalty Rewards Program. • Monthly Loyalty Rewards Program order: By taking advantage of this program, you earn up to 30% of your order back in free product credits. If you order 125 PV before the 15th of the month, you also get the free Product of the Month.

26

• Special promotions: doTERRA frequently has special promotions that enable you to earn free products, either by sharing doTERRA with others or by placing a certain size order. (For instance, in December, any 200 pv order you place will earn you a free 15 mL bottle of Frankincense ($93.33 value.) • Share oils with friends and family: When people purchase oils through you or your website (you get a free one when you enroll), you earn 25% of the order. Also, if you have a 100 PV LRP order setup and enroll a new IPC, you earn 20% of what they order for the first 60 days they’re enrolled. That adds up fast!
