Tuesday, February 3, 2009 Essbase Application Migration Hi, Here we will see how you can migrate an Essbase application from one server to another using Hyperion Shared Services Console Migration Utility version 11.1.1.1 when two systems are not connected to each other. We will fist create an application on the target Essbase server and then migrate the application to a file system and finally migrating to the target server.
I have named it MSR_TEST for the demo purpose.
Now lets go to shared services console.
Expand the Essbase server to see the list of all available application. Also notice the 'File System' menu below essbase. Select the Application you want to migrate. When you select the application, on the right main window you will notice the list of substitution variable and databases. If you expand the database, you will see the list of all other artifacts like Outline and rule files.
Check all and click the button Define Migration below. The tabs on the left hand side will inform you about the steps involved.
here we are trying to migrate 'Demo' application. Click next to select the destination.
Now specify the name for the folder you want to create in the file system. Just in case you want to migrate this application to another server connected to the network, you will have to add that Essbase server in the administration services console and then those applications will appear here.
This is displaying the details of the destination selected. Click Next to start the migration process.
If you want to see the status of the migration, launch migration status report.
This report will show all the previously conducted migrations. The first migration is the current one and it is showing 'In Progress'. Click on the refresh button to see the current status.
Our migration has been completed sucessfully. Now let's see where exactly the files have been saved.
The default directory where files are saved is Hyperion_Home/common/import_export/admin@native_directory.
Just refresh the file system list and you will notice the application 'MSR_TEST' under it. The application migration does not export the cube data to the file system. However while migrating from one Essbase server to another Essbase server, Utility gives you an option to migrate the cube data. For our workshop, now we will have to copy the entire folder 'MSR_TEST' and transfer it to the same directory of Target server though ftp or pendrive or CD or any other media. Once you do that, it will appear in the file system. Select the application 'MSR_TEST' and you will again see the list of artifacts on the main window. Click on Define Migration button.
click next to select the destination. This time you will only see the list of applications and not the file system as we already have the artifacts in the file system.
Select the application 'MSR_TEST' we created in the EAS (Administrative Services) in th first step for this purpose. Click next to see the destination options.
Here we get the option to restructure the cube and retain the cube data. I did not tried this as of now hence not 100% sure whether it exports the data. I will try to show that some other time. Click next to proceed.
Click Execute migration to start.
Launch the migration status report.
Click refresh to get the updated status.
Migration is successful. Lets check whether it appeared in the EAS or not.
Yes, it is all there. But there is no data in the cube. Let's try to export the data as well. Right click the cube on the source system which has the data and select export.
You can export the cube data to a file in your system. Provide the path where you want to export and provide the file extn as .bin.
on the message panel below, it will display the status. In our case it is successful. Now go to the target system cube and right click to select load data. Click on find data file.
Locate the file in the file system tab and select it.
click on Ok to import.
It will display the status as success. Lets check whether it displays the data or not. Right click the cube and select 'preview data'.
You can see now that we successfully migrated an application and exported the data also using Migration utility from shared services console. Thursday, January 8, 2009 Security Filter Essbase Tutorial Hi, Today we will see how you can create a security filter in Hyperion Essbase and restrict a user to see only the permitted data. Let's say I want to restrict a user to have access to only January Month. We will first start with creating a user in Essbase native security with non-administrative rights. Then as our next step we will create a filter of January month and then assign this filter to the user we just created.
Log on to Hyperion Administrative services console with admin user. Under Essbase Server go to Security and expand it. Right click on the users and select 'create user' option.
Type in your username and provide the password.
Select the default options. Click on Apply to finish.
So we have completed our first step. Now lets create a security filter.
Now select the database on which you would like to create this filter. I have selected 'Basic' Database under 'Demo' Application. Right click on the database and select create-filter.
Provide a name to the filter. On your left side you will see the all the dimensions available in the cube. On Right hand panel you will see 'Access' which allows to define type of access like Read,
Write and 'Member Specification' allows you to difine the member( which in our case would be Jan Month).
Select 'Read' in Access as I just want the user to read information.
From left panel, Expand Year-Qtr1. Double click jan and it will get added in the member specification. If that does not come, simply type the member with double quotes.
Click on Verify button and you will see the success messege in the panel below. Don't forget to Save it. So our security filter is created. Now we have to assign this filter to the user we created in our first step.
Again under security, right click users and select 'Display user Tables'.
Select the user and click on Edit or simply double click the user.
Select 'App/Db Access' Tab and select 'Access database' option for 'Demo' Application from the list.
Select 'Filter' option for 'Basic' Database.
As soon as you select filter option for Basic, Filter just below that will get enabled and you can see all the filters you have created. Select the filter you just created. Click Apply to save.
Now we are ready to see the results. We will see the results in Excel Add-in.
connect to Excel Add-in.
Provide the username and password of the user we created for this purpose. You will notice only one application appearing in the list. Clock 'OK'.
Retreive the results.
Now you can see that the user is only authorized to view results for Jan month only. As we did not provided any options for products or other dimensions, it will by default grant access to all products(Visible on the screen above). You can further restrict user for a particular product or products or any other dimensions. You can also create complex filters using substitution variables for situations like you may want to grant access to current quarter. Oracle Hyperion EPM 11.1.1 Installation and configuration Plan your installation and download the necessary components only. If you are installing complete system, make sure you have 2GB or more machine. You need to have database installed as a prerequisite. Friday, July 18, 2008 Hyperion Essbase 11.1.1 Hi, Yesterday I go the chance to install new hyperion Essbase 11.1.1 which is called as Oracle Hyperion EPM 11.1.1. The installation files are around 7 GB size. This time also you will have to download the different zip files for different components but you will have a common installer for installing Hyperion EPM. Unzip all the files in a common assemblies folder and run the installer. The installation is pretty simple. The configuration utility then can be used to configure all the components. Here you need to configure the database and application server. This time Hyperion EPM can be deployed only on OC4J or Oracle AS. A new utility is the diagonostic utility which can be run to find out which components ar not running and will help in troubleshooting. Most of the components are the same but certainly with new looks, bigger fonts and windows. The new components which are new are Essbase studio. Now you can use BI server as a database using ODBC. All in all, I liked the features and the approach to make things simpler and easy to use. Posted by Manohar Singh Rana 3 comments Email This BlogThis! Installation and configuration would be much simpler than before. Oracle has provided the new set of documents on its website. Installables are expected to be available for download very soon. The main features would be1. One common user interactive installer for all installations and easy options for upgrade and reinstall. 2. Diagnostor- to check which component is not working fine. 3. one common log files folder in hyperion home. 4. interactive reporting will have more intuitive charts like speedometer, thermometer and slider charts and using them with no programming. Also added features like trend lines, reference lines etc. 5. Integration with Oracle BI server sementic layer where the presentation layer can be accessed using ODBC without any need to define joins again. 6. Support for Netezza database through ODBC. 7. Enhanced support for ANSI sql. 8. Enhanced support for Teradata database functions. 9. SQR reporting will have new look with feature to add data from two data sources in one report using graphical interface. 10. Export SQR reports to XML which can be used by BI Publisher as a data source. 11. Workspace will have a new look and more features like advance search options, copy, cut and paste options. 12. Webanalysis will also have a new look and feel with better features. 13. Smart space was already there with 9.3.2 but this time it will be integrated with the suite. 14. Less number of documents which is really a big relief for the users, administrators and developers. 15. More tutorials/Oracle by example are expected which will help users to learn the tool easily. Now learning Hyperion will not be that difficult. There will be much more than what I have mentioned. Posted by Manohar Singh Rana 1 comments Email This BlogThis!
