4 Reading A Read the text below.

Guglielmo Marconi – father of the modern radio It is impossible for us to imagine life without telephones, radios, televisions and computers. We use these forms of communication every day, but for our greatgrandparents life was very different. One of the greatest inventors who changed the way we communicate was Guglielmo Marconi. He was born in Bologna, Italy, on 25 April 1874, the second son of Giuseppe Marconi, an Italian country gentleman, and Annie Jameson, who was from Ireland. He had a private education in Bologna, Florence and Leghorn. In 1896 he went to England with his first invention, a system of wireless telegraphy, and in 1899 he introduced wireless communication between France and England across the English Channel. Then in 1900 he sent signals across the Atlantic between Poldhu, Cornwall, and St John’s Newfoundland – a distance of 2,100 miles. In 1905 he married his first wife, Beatrice O’Brien, daughter of the 14th Baron Inchiquin. They had one son and two daughters. In 1927 he remarried and had one more daughter. Throughout his life he continued to invent and improve ways of communicating around the world and he received many international awards and prizes for his work. He died in Rome on 20 July, 1937 at the age of sixty-three.

B Mark the statements T (true) or F (false). 1 Marconi was Italian. 2 He had an older brother. 3 His mother was English. 4 He was educated only in Bologna.

4 Reading A Read the text below.

Being a teenager 1 Everyone says that your schooldays are the best days of your life. When you are a teenager, you certainly don’t believe that they might be. Homework, boring lessons, exams, more homework, no time to do what you want ... the list goes on and on. 2 The teenage years can be very difficult for many young people as they move from childhood to adulthood. They think they are old enough to make their own decisions. They think they know better than their parents what they should be allowed to do. They want to have independence. Why should they always tell their parents where they are going and who they are with? 3 Parents have been teenagers too of course but sometimes it seems they have forgotten what it’s like to want to stay out late, to go on holiday with friends, to have parties without any adults being around. They often say that things were different when they were young and that teenagers today have too much freedom. 4 But teenagers all over the world have the same problems and the same dreams, and they always have had. It’s the time to try new things and to learn what is OK and what is not.

Dear Jim, I hope you’re well and enjoying your holidays! I was looking forward to my holidays but now I’m not – everything has gone wrong. Honestly, my parents are impossible!! First they said I could go away with Harry. We wanted to go camping by the sea with some other friends. When my parents heard that we were going with girls, they said I wasn’t allowed to go! Why??? What do they think we’re going to do?! So then we changed our plans and decided to go to the mountains hiking for a week. Just me and Harry and our tent – but no, they didn’t like that idea either. So now, here I am, alone at home with nothing to do. Are your parents the same?! What are you going to do for the summer? Write soon. Bill

Now write your reply. Offer sympathy and explain that your parents are the same. Tell Bill what your parents let you do and what they don’t let you do. Explain that you have had to change your holiday plans too and say what you’re going to do.

4 Reading A Read the text below.

Gifted children Throughout history there have been child prodigies (very gifted children) – think of famous composers, musicians, inventors and academics. But can these children have a normal childhood playing with their friends and doing the things that children do, or should they be treated differently? In 2002, teenage siblings Iskander Yusof (15) and his sister Noraisha (19) were awarded degrees in Mathematics at Warwick University in England. Neither of them went to school before university. Instead, they were taught at home by their father, who is a mathematician, and their mother, a chemistry researcher. Iskander, who started his university course at the age of twelve, was given a first class honours degree. The two teenagers shared a house near the university campus while they were studying. When they were asked if they felt sad about not going to school and having a ‘normal’ childhood, neither of them felt that they had missed out. There is another prodigy in the family – their older sister, Sufiah. She went to Oxford University in 1997 at the age of thirteen. Her story was reported in the newspapers because she disappeared for a short time when she was fifteen. She said that she felt her parents put too much pressure on her. But the family’s youngest daughter, Zuleihka, is following her older siblings by taking her ‘A’ levels at the age of eight instead of the usual eighteen.

4 Reading A Read the text below.

How to stay healthy A Finally, remember your health is very important. It’s only when we don’t feel well that we realise this, so make sure you look after yourself and keep fit! B So what can we do to stay healthy? If you know you are feeling stressed or not very well, there are many things you can do to help yourself feel better. C Secondly, how often do you go to the doctor? Does your doctor just give you a prescription and send you away, or does he really listen to you and try to understand what is wrong? D Life today is very stressful. If you go to school, you have the stress of exams and getting good grades. If you go to work, you have the stress of too much work, unpleasant colleagues or very long hours. Because of our way of life today, many people complain of feeling unwell. They feel tired all the time or they have headaches or backache. E First of all, you should try to take regular exercise – go swimming or jogging at least three times a week. You should have a balanced diet – eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and cut down on sugar and processed foods. Finally, you should try to sleep between seven and eight hours a night and you should have a relaxing bath before going to bed.

Hi Anna, How are you? I hope you’re not spending too much time on the computer! Last time you wrote to me, you told me that your parents were really worried about you as you’re always sitting upstairs on your own in front of that screen. I guess they don’t really know anything about computers, do they? They probably think you’re just wasting your time. My parents don’t allow me to use the computer more than one hour a day. So I have to decide if I want to write emails, surf the net or play computer games. An hour goes so quickly, so this email will have to be short!! Let me know how you are. Love Natasha

Now write your reply explaining why you like being on the computer so much (emails, chat rooms, surfing the net, computer games, designing your own website ...).

Dear Jim, How are you? I hope you’re enjoying the last few days of term. I’m really looking forward to the school holidays, but I know my parents want to talk to me about my future. I have to choose which subjects I want to study next year and of course my choice will be important for my future job. When I was younger I wanted to be a doctor, but I’ve changed my mind and now I want to be a lawyer because I can earn a lot of money! No, seriously, I think it is a very interesting job and I may be able to work in another country if I join an international company. Of course, I might not be good enough to pass all the exams but I hope I’ll succeed. What do you think? What are you going to study? Write back soon.

A Read the text below.

7 Writing You have just received this email from your penfriend. Read it carefully.

TAPESCRIPT Mark: You know, it makes me so angry to see how dirty and polluted our town is now. People drop litter everywhere in the streets, especially the tourists. The traffic is much worse than ten years ago, and I hate cycling now because it’s so dangerous. You can’t breathe because the car fumes are so bad. Sarah: I know what you mean, but think about the world in general. It’s not just our town that is dying ... look at the rainforests. Why do they cut so many trees down? Mark: Well, they need more land to grow more food, not only for humans but for animals as well. But I think we should do something for our local environment first. Fewer cars would be great, wouldn’t it? I think more people should use public transport and leave their cars at home. Sarah: I agree, but I’m more worried about global pollution and global temperatures. Look how hot the summers are now and the winters are much warmer too. You realise that this increase in temperatures is causing the ice at the poles to melt and soon coastal cities will be flooded. I just don’t want to think about it. Mark: Why don’t we join our local ‘green’ group and then we can start a campaign to clean up the town and then we can go global! Sarah: Good idea! Let’s go to the library now.

TAPESCRIPT Interviewer: Thank you very much for agreeing to this interview. I know that you are very busy promoting your new film at the moment. Film star: It’s a pleasure to be here. Interviewer: Your first film, Dreams of Love, made you very famous while you were still very young. How did that fame change your life? Film star: Well ... at first I loved it. Everywhere I went, people wanted to talk to me, to take my photo, to have an autograph, and I enjoyed meeting my fans. But after a while, I realised that I didn’t have a private life any more. I always had to look good, to go out looking my best. I couldn’t go to the supermarket on my own in jeans and a sweatshirt because my fans expected me to look like a film star! Interviewer: So what did you do? Film star: First of all, I started going everywhere by car. I didn’t walk down the streets like I did before I was famous and I moved to a villa in the country, away from the journalists and paparazzi. Of course, I still gave interviews but I was much more careful about the people I spoke to. Interviewer: But there must be some good things about being beautiful and famous! Film star: You’re very kind! Of course there are. I’m very lucky to have a wonderful home and I was able to buy a house for my parents. They have never had much money so I was very happy to help them. But I don’t live like a star. I don’t go to parties much. I prefer to be at home with my husband and our two children. Interviewer: Thank you very much for talking to me and good luck with your next film, Dancing with Tigers. Film star: Thank you.

TAPESCRIPT A My home is in a small village. It’s the typical picture most people have of the English countryside. There are roses in the garden and the house has a thatched roof. Inside it’s quite dark because the windows are very small. The ceilings are low too, so in the winter it feels very cosy. B My home is very small but I like it because I can move around when I want to. I don’t like staying in the same place for very long so this is perfect. Sometimes I would like to have more space because I don’t have enough room for all my books. In the winter it can be very cold as well because the heating isn’t good enough. C My home is on the twentieth floor. I have fantastic views over the whole of London. It’s small but very light as the windows are very big. In the summer it gets too hot because it’s so high up, but I love it – though I know most people think I’m crazy to live in the centre of town. D My home is on one floor, which is very important for me because I can’t walk up and down stairs easily. My sitting room is the biggest room and has doors which open on to the garden at the back. In the summer I love sitting outside in the garden with a nice cup of tea! E My home is fantastic for the children. They can make as much noise as they like because we don’t have any immediate neighbours. We have a lot of space and the house is always full of people. It would be impossible if we lived in a terraced house!

TAPESCRIPT Paul: Hi, Mary, it’s great to see you again. How are you? What’s been happening recently? We haven’t seen each other for such a long time. Mary: Paul, good to see you too. Well, to be honest, things aren’t great. They say bad things always come in threes. Well, I guess it’s true! Paul: Why? What’s happened? Mary: Where do I start! Last Tuesday my car was stolen, so I had to go to work by train. If I hadn’t had to take the train, I wouldn’t have been late. Of course, I missed an important meeting. If I hadn’t left my mobile phone at home, I would have been able to call the office and tell my boss. Of course, he didn’t know what had happened so when I walked in he was really angry. In fact he was so angry that he told me to leave and never come back. Paul: That’s terrible! How could he do that? It wasn’t your fault. Mary: Yes, but ... anyway ... I was so upset I left my bag on the train going home. If I hadn’t done that, I would have spent a lot of money, so maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Paul: It sounds pretty bad to me! Mary: Well, things can only get better, can’t they?! Paul: True. Come on, let me buy you a drink. Mary: Good idea.

This is the place where I was born. Jack asked his sister why she was crying. If I knew the answer, I would tell you. Our old English teacher used to be very good. She would have forgotten my birthday if I hadn’t reminded her. Paul said that he would come to my party. If you wanted to, you would help me. Did you use to play football at your primary school? I like people who are open and friendly. When I got to school, I realised that I had missed our English test.
