Score High- PTE Tips and Tricks What is PTE? Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer based academic English language test that assesses English language skills of the test takers aiming to study or settle in an English speaking environment. PTE Academic assesses reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the candidates in an academic environment. PTE test scores are accepted for admission in a number of prestigious colleges, and institutions across the world including countries like Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA and Canada. Prominent universities of the world like Harvard, Yale and INSEAD accept PTE scores. PTE Academic results are available in five business days. Candidates can schedule their tests within 24 hours. PTE Academic assesses the real life English skills you need to live or study abroad. As mentioned above, there are 4 modules of the PTE test, which are- reading, writing, listening and speaking. The item types for modules are mentioned below:-

Assessment of PTE Scores The PTE Academic Scores are accessed through an online account. You will receive an email which will notify you once your scores are available. The scores of the PTE Academic are measured against the Global Scale of English, which gives you an accurate overview of your skills. Your score report would have several sections which are- your overall score, your personal details, photo and detailed breakdown of your performance. The overall PTE scores reflect your overall English language ability. The scores are a reflection of your overall proficiency in the English language.
Who Accepts PTE Scores? The PTE Scores are recognized by more than 80% of the universities and colleges in the UK, US, New Zealand and Australia. PTE academic is approved by the UK border Agency (UKBA) for Tier 4 student visa applications. The PTE scores are also accepted by more than 400 leading business schools and is one of the English language tests preferred and endorsed by GMAC.
Validity of PTE Scores The PTE scores are available for 2 years. Depending upon the scores you received, you can send your scores to the colleges and institutions once you have logged into your account. It can take up to 48 hours to send your scores to the institutions. You must send your PTE scores to the institutions that accept and recognize PTE scores.
Interpretation of PTE Scores The PTE scores are based on scoring system which is based on complex algorithms. The PTE scores are scored against the Global Scale of English which gives you an accurate overview of the scores based on your performance on the scale of 10-90. You will get overall English score as well as scores for individual enabling skills as well as English sub skills. In your PTE academic score report, you will get overall scores, speaking scores, listening scores, reading scores, writing scores, grammar scores, spelling scores, oral fluency scores, vocabulary scores and written discourse scores.

PTE Speaking The purpose of the PTE speaking is to test the ability of the test takers to speak English in an academic environment. The various speaking item types are- read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, re-tell lecture and answer short questions. These item types require you to respond orally using correct intonation, pronunciation, fluent speech and stress. The total time given to complete the speaking section of the test is approximately 30-35 minutes, depending on the combination of the items in a given test. Some item types in PTE speaking assess speaking, listening and reading skills of the test takers.
Read Aloud In Read Aloud, candidates are required to read a short text aloud using correct pronunciation and intonation. This section of the PTE test, evaluates both speaking and reading skills. There can be six to seven read aloud items in the PTE Academic test depending on the combination of the items in a given test.
PTE Speaking Read Aloud Tips 1. Read the text carefully:- You will have 30-40 seconds to read the text before the microphone starts working. Use this time to read the text carefully. 2. Do not go back to correct yourself:- You may make a mistake while speaking the text. Do not go back to correct yourself as it will negatively affect your scores. 3. Speak at a normal speed:- You should always speak clearly at a normal speed using correct punctuation and pronunciation. If you speak too softly or quickly, it may get difficult to score your response. 4. Try to understand the overall meaning of the text:- You can deliver the response correctly if you have known its meaning. Focus on words, phrases and intonation that may convey overall meaning of the text. 5. Take a deep breath:- Before you speak the text, sit up straight and take a deep breath. It will help you speak clearly.

Repeat Sentence Repeat Sentence tests the ability of the test takers to understand and remember a sentence and then repeat exactly as you hear it using correct pronunciation. Both speaking and listening skills are tested in this item type. The recording will run for 3 to 9 second. There can be 10 to 12 repeat sentences depending on the combination of items in a given a test. You will have 15 seconds to record your response for each item. Repeat Sentence is an integrated item type that tests both your listening and speaking skills in an academic environment.
PTE Speaking Repeat Sentence Tips 1. Take Notes:- You will be given an erasable notepad and a pen, which should be used to take notes and write important words and phrases. 2. Speak Naturally:- The speaker’s accent may be different from that of yours. Do not try to copy the speaker’s accent and speak naturally. Speak calmly as you will have enough time to record your response. 3. Give your best response:- You will not be able to re-record your answer. Therefore, give a single response demonstrating your best ability. 4. Do not pause for 3 seconds:- If you do not speak in the microphone, it will automatically stop recording after 3 seconds of silence. You can use fillers such as hmmm, ummmm, aaaahhh, etc to cover the gap in your speaking, if you go blank. 5. Speak when microphone opens:- There is no tone before the microphone opens and start working. You should only speak, when it starts recording. Speaking, before the microphone starts working may make you record incomplete answer.

Describe Image Describe an image item type assess the ability of the candidates to describe an image from an academic source. The image can be a graph, picture, map, chart or table. This item type assess the speaking skills of the test takers. You will be required to read the instructions and describe the given image in detail. You will have 40 seconds to give your answer. There can be 6 to 7 Describe Image items in the PTE Academic speaking section depending on the combination of items in a given test. You will be given scores based on the use of correct intonation, pronunciation, stress, grammar, fluent speech and speaking under timed conditions. Describe an image does not test listening and writing skills and reading skills are only used to read the instructions.
PTE Speaking Describe an Image Tips 1. Study the image:- You will have 25 seconds to study the image before the microphone starts working. You can use this time to study the image carefully. 2. Take notes:- Use erasable notepad to note important keywords, phrases and words. It will serve as a guide while answering questions. 3. Speak Clearly:- Speak in your natural accent clearly. Do not try to speak too quickly or softly as it will make your response difficult to score. 4. Include important details:- Try to include all the main points conveyed by the image. Do not try to repeat the information, instead highlight supporting points. 5. Do not go back:- Even if you make a mistake, do not go back to correct yourself. Rather continue recording your answer.

Re-tell Lecture Re-tell lecture item type assess the ability of the test takers to give a presentation on information from a lecture. Both speaking and listening skills of the candidates are tested in this item type. In this item type, you will hear a lecture for 10 seconds. After listening to a lecture, speak into the microphone and retell what you have heard from the lecture in your own words.
PTE Speaking Re-tell lecture Tips 1. Scan the image carefully:- You will have three seconds before the recording starts automatically. Use this time to scan the image carefully. 2. Listen attentively:- To re-tell a lecture correctly, you need to focus on the content of the lecture. It is important that you understand what you hear. Beacuse, when you have understood the lecture, then only you can produce a correct response. 3. Take notes:- Use erasable notepad and pen to jot down important key words and phrases. Do not try to take notes word-for-word as you may miss out important information. Rather note down important words and phrases. You should also refer to the notes while retelling a lecture. 4. Take a moment to review notes:- After you have written important key words and phrases, take a moment to review notes and organize the information before you start retelling the lecture. 5. Speak naturally:- The accent of the speaker may be different from yours. Do not try to copy the speaker and speak in your natural accent with correct pronunciation.

Answer Short Question Answer Short Question is a speaking item type with single correct response. It tests the ability of the test takers to understand a question and provide accurate answer. This item type assess the speaking and listening skills of the candidates. The questions may be accompanied by an image. There can be 10 to 12 Answer short Question items in PTE Academic, depending on the combination of items in a given test. The response will be scored as correct or incorrect depending on the accuracy of the words in your answer. No scores will be given for no response or incorrect response.
Answer Short Questions Tips 1. Listen to the questions carefully:- Listen the question attentively to determine the type of information. 2. Speak when microphone starts:- You must only speak when microphone starts working. There will be no tone on this item type. Take a deep breath and speak clearly when microphone opens. 3. Give single answer:- Do not give answer in more than one word or a short phrase. You will not get credit for extra words. 4. Speak Clearly:- Speak clearly at a normal speed. You will have plenty of time to answer your questions, hence do not speak too quickly.

Writing Section The writing section of the PTE Academic test the ability of the test takers to produce written English in an academic environment. There are two item types in the writing section, which are- Summarize written text and write an essay. The total time given to complete the writing section is 40, 50 or 55 minutes, depending on the combination of the items in a given test. You can be asked to write two summaries and one essay, three summaries and one essay or two summaries and two essays. The item types in the writing section are timed individually. You can refer to the timer on the upper right hand corner of the computer screen to know the time remaining for each item.
Summarize Written Text Summarize Written Text tests the ability of the test takers to comprehend, analyze and combine information from a reading passage and then summarise the main points in writing. Both writing and speaking skills of the candidates are tested in this section. Candidates are required to summarize the summary in one sentence. The response will be judged on the quality of the writing and how well the key points are presented in the answer. The reading passages for this item type are upto 300 words. You have 10 minutes to answer each summarize written text item and after it, the test will automatically move on to the next item.
Summarize Written Text Tips 1. Read the passage carefully:- Read the passage carefully and try to infer the meaning of unknown words and phrases. You can also re-read the passage to take notes of important key words and phrases. 2. Do not apply your previous knowledge:- Chances are there, you may come across a passage which is already known to you. Do not apply your previous or background knowledge about the passage. Read the passage carefully and answer questions based on what you read. 3. Keep the word count in mind:- You should not forget that you are required to write a summary in one sentence, which should be not more than 75 words or fewer than 5 words. 4. Check grammar and punctuation:- After you have written a summary, check if grammar, spelling and punctuation are correct. If you think, there is any need of corrections, make the necessary ones. 5. Check the content:- Check if you have included all the necessary ideas as well as essential supporting points in the passage.

Write an Essay The “write an essay” item type of the writing section test the ability of the candidates to write a persuasive and argumentative essay on a given topic. The purpose of the write an essay item type is to evaluate the writing skills of the candidates. The test takers will be given 20 minutes to plan, write and revise an essay about the topic. The response will be judged on how well you develop and organize your ideas. You are required to write 200-300 words. You will have 20 minutes to answer each write essay item. After completion of 20 minutes, the test will automatically move on to the next item.
PTE Writing “Write an Essay” Tips 1. Read the instructions carefully:- Read the instructions given in the essay prompt carefully. You may be asked to argee or disagree with the statement, describe a situation, answer a question or discuss advantages and disadvantages. If you do not meet any of the requirements of the essay, your scores will be negatively affected. You will be given score zero, if you write something other than the topic presented in the prompt. 2. Organize your ideas:- You can note down important key words, ideas and phrases on the erasable notepad. Before you write an essay, ensure your ideas are organized properly. 3. Keep an eye on the timer:- Since “write an essay” is a time bound task. Therefore, keep an eye on timer to know how much time is remaining. Ensure you write, revise and proofread an essay in the given time. 4. Check total word count:- Your essay should be between 200-300 words. If you have not met the writing requirements, adjust the length of the essay accordingly. 5. Check grammar, punctuation and spelling:- Your scores can get negatively affected if you use incorrect grammatical structures, spelling and punctuation. Before you submit your essay, ensure there are no grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors.

Reading Section The reading section of the PTE Academic test the ability of the test takers to understand written English in an Academic environment. The reading item types require you to understand an authentic text from an academic source. The total time given to complete the reading part of the test is 32-41 minutes, depending on the combination of the items in a given test. You may take notes on an erasable notepad, which can be used a guide while answering the questions. The various item types in the reading section are not timed individually. You can refer to the timer on the upper right hand corner of the computer screen to know how much time is remaining.
Multiple Choice- Choose Single Answer Multiple Choice- Choose Single Answer is a reading item type with single correct response. It tests the ability of the test takers to analyze, interpret and evaluate a short reading text on an academic subject. Candidates are required to read the text and answer the multiplechoice question by selecting the correct response. Depending on the combination of items in a given test, you can expect two to three multiple choice, choose single answer items in the reading part. The response will be scored as either correct or incorrect. You will not get any point for no response or an incorrect response.
Multiple Choice- Choose Single Answer Tips 1. Read the prompt carefully:- You should always read the prompt carefully. It will help you understand what to read for. 2. Eliminate Incorrect Options:- Eliminate any response options that you think are incorrect. Then choose correct answer out of the remaining options. 3. Make a guess:- Even if you are not sure about the options, make a guess and move on. Do not leave the question unanswered. 4. Do not focus on unfamiliar words:- If you come across unfamiliar or unknown words, do not concentrate on them too much. In this way, your time will get wasted. You should always utilize your time on item types that you know than you do not know. 5. Do not match words:- Some students make a mistake of simply matching words or phrases from the options with those in the text. Do not do word matching as incorrect options may also have same words.

Multiple Choice- Choose Multiple Answers Multiple Choice- Choose Multiple Answers is a reading item type with more than one correct options. It test the ability of the test takers to analyze, interpret and evaluate a reading text on academic subject. You will receive maximum response options, if all response options are correct. For any wrong options, one point will be deducted, while correct options will be given one point.
Multiple Choice- Choose Multiple Answers Tips 1. Get the main idea of the passage:- Read and identify the main idea or theme of the text. Identify specific details, facts, opinions , definitions or sequence of events. It will help you choose all the correct options. 2. Do not focus on unfamiliar words:- Your focus should not be on unknown or unfamiliar words because you will waste time this way. Try to infer the meaning of these words from the context. 3. Check your response:- In case of uncertainity, check the response options. You can read the instructions given in the prompt again to check if you have marked the correct options. 4. Find Connections:- You will be able to mark answers correctly if you are able to identify the connections between pieces of information. This also evaluates your ability to link different parts of the text together. 5. Skip Unknown Words:- The thumb rule to save your time in the reading section is to omit unknown or unfamiliar words. If you focus too much on them, you may end up wasting your time.

Re-Order Paragraphs Re-order paragraph is a reading item type which has a single correct order for the text boxes in a reading text. The purpose of the re-order paragraph is to test the ability of the test takers to organize an academic text. In PTE reading re-order paragraph, you will see text boxes in the left panel in a random order. You are required to restore the original order by dragging the text boxes from the left panel to the right panel. The text items for this item type are up to 150 words in length. There can be two to three re-order paragraph items depending on the combination of items in a given test.
Re-Order Paragraphs Tips 1. Skim all text boxes correctly:- The thumb rule to understand the topic of the text is to skim all the text boxes quickly. This will help you understand the order of the sentences and place them correctly. 2. Look for the main topic:- Skimming should be done to identify the main topic or sentences in the text. You should be careful that it will not start with “nevertheless” or “however” neither it is likely to contain pronouns. 3. Move text boxes to the right panel:- You are required to move text boxes to the right panel from the left panel in the correct order. If you are not sure about the order, you can do it later. 4. Pay attention to the sequence:- Re-read the text until you have reconstructed the whole text. Pay attention to the grammatical structures, words, phrases or sequence of information. 5. Do not leave it unanswered:- It is better to attempt the item types than to leave the text boxes unanswered.

Reading: Fill in the Blanks Reading: Fill in the blanks is an item type that contain a single correct answer for each blank. This section tests the ability of the test takers to use grammatical and context clues to identify words that complete the information. You will see fill in the blanks with several words missing in it. A list of words will be given at the end of the blanks. You are required to drag words from the box below to the appropriate place in the text. To undo an answer choice, you can drag the word back to the box below the text. The reading texts are upto 80 words in length. There can be four to five reading: fill in the blanks depending on the combination of items in a given test.
Reading: Fill in the Blanks Tips 1. Skim the text:- Start with skimming the text ignoring the blanks. This will help you get an understanding of the topic. 2. Re-read the text:- In case you do not understand the meaning of the text, you can re-read the text to get its meaning. Make necessary changes in the text. 3. Make an attempt:- Even if you are not sure about certain blanks, do not leave them unanswered. Its better to make an attempt than to leave it answered. 4. Re-check:- Before you submit your answer, you should re-check if the blanks you have dragged over the blanks makes sense or not. To undo, you can drop the words back to their place. 5. Use grammatical knowledge:- Use your grammatical knowledge to form sentence. For an example, if the blank contain a plural noun, you should always choose a plural noun from the blue box.

Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks is a reading item type which contains a single correct answer for each blank. Both reading and writing skills of the candidates are tested in this item type. You will see a text with blanks. When you click on each blank, you will see a list of choices. Select the appropriate answer choice for each blank.The reading texts can be up to 300 words in length. There can be five to six reading and writing: Fill in the Blanks items in the reading part depending on the combination of items in a given test.
Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks Tips 1. Perform Skimming:- Skim the text to identify the topic, theme or main ideas. While skimming, your focus should be on identifying the main ideas and not to miss out the essential information. 2. Understand the purpose:- Reading should be done to understand the purpose of topic of the text. It will help you answer the blanks correctly. 3. Always attempt:- Even if you are not sure about the answer, you should always fill in the blank. Its better to attempt the questions than to leave it unanswered. 4. Focus on grammatical structure:- While attempting, your focus should be on the correct use of grammatical structures. Pay attention to the pronouns, logicial connectors and choose words that highlight the right relationships. 5. Fill in the blanks one by one:- You should always follow a sequence while filling in the blanks. If you struck at some blank, skip it and answer other ones. You can come back to it after completing the remaining blanks.

Listening Section The purpose of the listening section of the PTE Academic is to test the ability of the test takers to understand spoken English in an academic environment. It tests the ability of the test takers to understand a variety of accents including both native and non-native. There are eight item types in the listening part of the PTE test. The total time given to complete the listening part is approximately 45-57 minutes depending on the combination of items in a given test. Each recording in the listening section will be played only once.
Summarize Spoken Text The summarize spoken text of the listening section tests the ability of the test takers to comprehend, analyze and combine information form a lecture and then summarize the main points in writing. You will hear a short lecture and after listening you are required to write a summary between 50-70 wordsfor a fellow students who was not present at the lecture. You will be given 10 minutes to finish the task. The recording for this item type will be between 60-90 seconds. There can be two to three summarize spoken text items depending on the combination of items in a given test.
Summarize Spoken Text Tips 1. Listen attentively:- The purpose of the listening section of the PTE is to test the listening skills of the test takers. You should listen to the recording attentively. This is because if you do not understand properly, you will not be able to summarize correctly. 2. Take notes:- Use erasable notepad to jot down important key words, points and information. Remember not to take notes word-for-word, rather write only what is important. 3. Review notes:- Take time to review your notes and then plan a summary. You should take notes while listening to a recording and when it has stopped, review your notes, before you write your final answer. 4. Don’t forget the word count:- Do not forget that you are required to write a summary, in between 50-70 words. If you are falling short of words, adjust the text length accordingly. 5. Check grammar, spelling and punctuation:- Incorrect spelling, punctuation and grammar can affect your scores. Ensure there are no spelling and grammatical mistakes. If there are, make necessary corrections.

Multiple Choice- Choose Multiple Answers Multiple Choice- Choose Multiple Answers is a listening item type with more than one correct response. The purpose of this listening item type is to assess the ability of the test takers to analyze, interpret and evaluate a brief audio or video recording on an academic subject. You will listen to the recording then answer questions by selecting all the correct responses. You need to select more than one response. The recordings for this item type will run for approximately 40-90 seconds. You can have two to three Multiple ChoiceChoose Multiple Answers depending on the combination of items in a given test.
Multiple Choice- Choose Multiple Answers Tips 1. Read the prompt carefully:- You should read the instructions given in the prompt carefully because it will help you understand what to listen for. 2. Take notes:- An erasable notepad should be used to take notes and write down important key words and other information. The purpose of the note taking should be writing crucial information and not writing word for word. 3. Listen completely:- Listen to the recording till the end. Even if you think you have already known what is being said in the recording, listen it till the end. Do not apply your previous or background information about the topic. Answer questions based on what you listen in the recording. 4. Select correct options:- First eliminate the options which you think are incorrect and get close to the correct options. Do not do word matching because sometimes incorrect options also contain same words from the recording. 5. Do not change your response:- Do not change your response options unless you feel they are incorrect.

Fill in the Blanks Fill in the Blanks item type of the listening section test the ability of the test takers to listen for missing words in a recording and type the missing words into a transcription. This item type assess both listening and writing skills of the test takers. You will listen to a recording and will be required to type the missing words in each blank. The recordings in this item type will run for approximately 30-60 seconds. There can be two to three Fill in the Blanks in the listening section.
Fill in the Blanks Tips 1. Perform Skimming:- Before listening starts, skim the text quickly so that you can understand better what you hear. 2. Take Notes:- Erasable notepad is of immense use to take notes in the listening section of the PTE Academic, which can be referred to later on while answering. Write down important key words or points. 3. Check your options:- After you have marked the options, check your responses. Check if the words you have typed in fit the sentences grammatically or if there are any spelling errors. Make corrections if necessary. 4. Make changes:- Before you move to next item type, re-check if the response options you have typed in are correct. If you think, changes are required, make necessary changes.

Highlight Correct Summary Highlight Correct Summary is an item type that test the abiliy of the test takers to comprehend, analyze and combine information from a recording and identify the most accurate summary of the recording. You will hear a recording and will be required to click on the paragraph that best related to the recording. The recording for this item type will run for 30-90 seconds approximately. There can be two to three Highlight Correct Summaries in the test.
Highlight Correct Summary Tips 1. Skim the response options:- Before listening starts, skim the response options quickly. This will make you prepare to focus on listening when the recording begins. 2. Concentrate:- While recording is in progress, do not read the paragraphs. This will make you lose concentration. 3. Take Notes:- Use erasable notepad to note down important key words and phrases. Do not write too much while taking notes, just note down what is important. 4. Read the paragraphs carefully:- After listening to a recording, read the paragraps carefully. You can also refer to the notes that you have taken to get to the correct responses. 5. Always attempt:- Even if you are not sure which is the correct paragraph, attempt the question. Its better to attempt than to leave it unanswered.

Multiple Choice- Choose Single Answer Multiple Choice- Choose Single Answer is a listening item type with a single correct response. It tests the ability of the test takers to analyze, interpret and evaluate recording on an academic subject and answer questions. You will listen to a recording and and will be required to answer the questions. Only one response is correct. There can be two or three Multiple Choice- Choose Simngle Answer items in the listening part.
Multiple Choice- Choose Single Answer Tips 1. Read the prompt carefully:- Before the recording begins, read the prompt carefully. This will help you understand better what to listen for. 2. Take notes:- Make good use of erasable notepad to write down important key words, phrases and other useful information. 3. Listen Completely:- Even if you have known the topic before, listen to the recording until the end. Do not apply your previous or background knowledge about the topic. 4. Make an attempt:- Always attempt all the questions, even if you are not sure. It is suggested to make an attempt than to leave the questions unanswered.

Select Missing Word Select Missing Word is a listening item type that test the ability of the test takers to predict what a speaker will say based on the clues provided in the recording. You will hear a recording and at the end of the recording, several words or group of words will be replaced by a beep. Highlight Incorrect Words Highlight Incorrect Words is an item type that test the ability of the test takers to listen for and point out the difference between a recording and a transcription. It assesses both listening and reading skills of the candidates. In this item type, you will hear a recording. There will be a transcription below the recording. Several words in the transcription will differ from what the speaker will say. You are required to click on the words that are different. The recordings for this item type will run for 15-50 seconds approximately. There can be two to three Highlight Incorrect Words items in the listening section.

Write from Dictation Write from Dictation item type of the listening section test the ability of the candidates to understand and remember a sentence that they hear and write it exactly as you hear it using correct spelling. You will hear a sentence and you are required to type the sentence exactly as you hear it. You will hear the sentence only once. There can be three to four Write from Dictation items in the PTE Academic. The recording will run for approximately three to five seconds. Write from Dictation is an integrated item type that tests both listening and writing skills of the candidates in an academic environment.
