(/member  made a lot of sense, also saw a lot of  /Saarducci/)

unnecessary flaming, but I do have a few comments to make. Right off the bat the one individ ual that a sked about having hi s modem i n the basement with a rotating an tenna on he roof needs a reality check. Overlooked in the conne cting the USB dongle to the antenna was the ransmission line length, for these frequenci es it shoul d be as short as possible and a mu ltiple of 1/2 wavelen gth I'd suggest as close to 2.41 inches as one could manage (use a small diameter 50 ohm coax). Take the do ngle a part and connect a USB extension cable to it and m ount it directly on the antenna assembly. Paper cli ps vs copper, at thi s frequency it's not going to make much difference, however the specific model was generated using 14awg copper. Someone said glue i t all to cardboard then cover it with more cardboard actually a strong and stable design, original author said build around popsicle sticks(wooden), both are subject to absorbing moisture from the a ir and e ither can have a poor diel ectric constant, I would sugge st some kind of pl astic (they make popsicles with pla stic sticks). The len gths of the el eme nts, he spacing between them, and keeping them all in the same pla ne and paralle l to ea ch other is the most important consideration. T he driven elemen t, #2 in this design: that one I would make from 14awg copper, I'd make a simpl e dipo le rather than a folded d ipole, I would take two pieces of wire ma ke 90 degree bends in them cut the bent part to about 1/8 inch and attach my transmission line. Take a p iece o f hea t shrink cut two notches in it abo ut 1/4 inch apart and insert the wires into it an d shrink it, maybe reinforce the space i n the center (break a tooth from my comb and stick it in the midd le before heating the shrink?) cut it down to the correct overall length and insert it last. If you use the fold ed dip ole make sure the folded part is perpendicular to the pl ane of the rest of the antenna an d use 300 oh m twin lead to connect to the dongle, but your SWR will probably be much higher, reducing your effective gain and possibly resulting in early failure of the dongle. Horizontal vs vertical, after you have your antenna connected and have connected to some network you can try rotati ng i t about its horizontal axis to see if you can get a b etter aspect on the o ther  antenna (more bars). All in a ll thou gh good jo b to Biotele, i t's cheap, it's easy, and if done right will provide excellent results. I did not buil d this

If you mean just soldering a USB connector on to the (/member  feedline for this antenna, no, /popef elix/) hat won't work. You still need something to ha ndle the actual generation and reception of the wireless signal.

Reply (CRF1Z8SHFPTELJP)

However, if you mean connecting the antenna to a USB wireless adaptor, that's possible, provided you connect he feedline from the antenna o the antenna connector on he wireless adap tor. If the adaptro doesn't have on e, you'd have to tear it apart and find where the internal antenna was connected.

Anyo ne with expe rien ce o f refl ecti ons from the coa x itsel f? I bui lt a 4-el em ent vertica ll y polarized 850-MHz Yagi antenn a. With the coax dangling ha phazardly from the boo m (/member  behind, there seemed to be tremendous problems. These problems seem to di sappear by /dbartley/) loopi ng the coax behind from boom to the m ast, forming ROUGHLY another hal f reflector.

dbartley (/member/dbartley/) in reply to dbartley

The ARRL Antenna Book (Chapter 27, 1991) describes (/member  his problem of antenna /dbartley/) currents on the transmission lines somewhat. The outside of the coax is actually part of  he antenna, being directly attached to an active antenna element, though it is perpendicular in this region. But also its metal further back interacts inductively with other antenna eleme nts in its vicinity. Directing the coax back along the boom , with a large loop (about 1.5 wavelengths) behind and down to the wooden mast improves reception consistency somewhat, rather  han hap hazard arrangement. But the idea l lo op seems to be obtain ed from the tightest possible. Because of the peculiar geometry and the lack of actual measurement rather than qual itative evaluation, it's hard to unde rstand why this is.

a possibil ity would be to add something covering the back hat was grounded, i t would act as a shield to interference, and not a reflector thoug h.
