Only got a minute? Dutch is a West Germanic language, closely related to German and English, and is spoken by around 23 million people, mainly in the Netherlands, Belgium, Surinam (South America) and the Dutch Antilles and Aruba. Dutch spelling is officially regulated by law. De Nederlandse Taalunie (the Dutch language union) publishes het Groene Boekje (literally, the little green

book) which contains the official spelling of words in the Dutch language.

Looking up words Verbs are listed under the infinitive form. Remember that separable verbs come with a prefix which may be separated from the verb. Adjectives are entered in the dictionary under their basic form, without the extra -e which is sometimes added. Nouns are entered in the dictionary under their singular form.

Don't forget the various spelling rules which apply, for instance, to the doubling of consonants or vowels, or the rules which mean that s and f sometimes change into z and v, and vice versa. To help you understand the meaning of abbreviations, and what they stand for, for most abbreviations the full Dutch form is given after a colon:

a.s.: aanstaande, coming: 9 juli a.s., 9 July next.
