Introduction The increased reliability of drilling motors, in combination with improved drill bit designs and measurement while drilling (MWD) systems, present operators with enhancements to rotary drilling in an increasing number of applications. It is generally acknowledged that an effective drilling motor, matched to the drill bit and formation, provides better rates of penetration than rotary drilling alone. In addition to increasing rate of penetration, a drilling motor allows a reduction in drillstring rotary RPM which reduces wear and tear on the casing, the drillstring, and other rotating topside components. A properly configured bottom hole assembly (BHA) also allows for effective directional control of the wellbore. The main sub assemblies of a drilling motor include the power section, adjustable or fixed housing, driveshaft, and the bearing assembly. • The power section offers a wide range of bit speeds and torque outputs. With recent improvements in elastomer technology and manufacturing techniques, the power section can be tailored to function in high bottom hole temperatures and invert mud systems.
• The adjustable or fixed housing and driveshaft are located between the power section and the bearing assembly, and are engineered to withstand the increased torque rating of power sections.
• As drilling programs become more complex and drilling distances push further, NOV Downhole engineers its bearing assemblies to withstand higher loads and torque, while increasing its reliability and longevity. NOV Downhole offers both oil and mud lubricated bearing assemblies.

DRILLING MOTORS Drilling Motor Sub-Assembly Description NOV Downhole offers the most versatile array of downhole motors available for straight or directional drilling. Rotary power is produced by a Moineau positive displacement progressing cavity power section. Power sections offer a wide range of bit speeds and torque ratings and can be tailored to function in both high bottom-hole temperatures and inverted mud systems. Motors are available with a fixed or an adjustable bent housing located between the motor and the bearing assembly. The adjustable housing is easily adjustable at the wellsite from straight to a 3o bend in 12 increments, or a 4o bend in 18 increments. Most motors have an optional near bit stabilizer. Concentric or eccentric stabilizers can also be provided to stabilize the top or middle of the motor. NOV Downhole manufactures motors that range from 1v” to 114” diameter.
5. Bearing Assembly:

3. Driveshaft Assembly:
1. Top Sub / Dump Sub:
3
A top sub may be used instead of the dump sub; in which case the string will be pulled wet. The use of a float valve prevents the motor from filling through the bit. The dump sub is a normally-open valve which allows mud to by-pass the motor to fill or drain the pipe while tripping into or out of the hole. This valve will automatically close when circulation is started. For example: The 64” dump sub closes at a flow rate of approximately 120 gpm. The closing flow rate can be changed upon request.
2. Power Section: Rotational power is provided by a Moineau progressing cavity positive displacement power section. Power sections are available in many flow, speed, and torque ranges to fit any drilling environment. Different rotor/ stator fits as well as advanced elastomers are available to help cope with high down hole temperatures and invert muds.
The bearing assembly is available in either oil or mud lubricated technology.
The eccentric motion of the rotor is converted to concentric rotation via a driveshaft fitted at each end with sealed and lubricated universal joints. The strength and service life of these joints is greatly increased over that of conventional joints due to the larger diameters that are possible due to the larger internal clearances available through the adjustable housing. NOV Downhole offers both conventional and high torque driveshaft assemblies, designed to handle today’s highest-torque power sections, with a proven record of reliability.
The oil lubricated assemblies are capable of withstanding extreme radial and axial loads. Bearing assemblies are fully oil bath lubricated, sealed and pressure balanced. Since no drilling fluid flows through the bearing assembly, motor bearing life is extended and bit hydraulics are maximized. The short length of the bearing assembly keeps the adjustable housing close to the bit and provides better control of the build rate and motor steerability. The mud lubricated assemblies are designed to withstand extreme drilling conditions and high temperatures. They feature high precision bi-directional full contact thrust bearings that provide a uniform load distribution and high weight on bit capacity. In addition, the bearing mandrel is radially supported over the entire length and can handle very high side loads.
6. Bearing Mandrel: The Bearing Mandrel has a large crosssection providing extra strength and reduces the deflection and stress. This allows the motor to be rotated in the hole with the reduced likelihood of fatigue induced failures. NOV Downhole motors are available with high-torque bearing mandrels, designed to handle high torque power sections.
7. Stabilization: 4. Adjustable Assembly: The adjustable assembly connects the stator to the bearing assembly and encloses the driveshaft assembly. The angle setting is field adjustable to produce a wide range of build rates. The adjustable assembly is available as 3o and 4o options. The Downhole adjustable assembly is made up of four components and is thus simple to service and maintain. The design allows for a large internal diameter and thus enables a larger driveshaft diameter to be assembled.
Motors are available with a threaded stabilizer on the bearing assembly immediately above the bearing mandrel. Stabilizers can be either straight blade or spiral blade. This stabilizer along with the integral wear pad at the bend of the adjustable housing provides the full range of stabilization required for directional and kickoff work. For steerable motor assemblies, a concentric or eccentric stabilizer may be installed at the top of the motor and an undergauge stabilizer on the lower end of the motor.

Bottom-End Options ‘ST3’ Sealed Bearing Technology - (HEMIDRIL®-ST3, PowerPLUS™-ST3, Vector™-ST3, DuraPower™-ST3)
NOV ‘ST3’ Sealed Bearing Technology (previously known as the Series 36 bearing assembly) uses the strongest and most versatile sealed bearing assemblies in the NOV fleet. This is a fully sealed bearing assembly – 100% of the drilling fluid passes directly to the bit with no loss via flow restrictors, so bit hydraulics are maximized. Features Benefits • Sealed, oil-lubricated bearing assembly • 100% of the fluid exits at the bearing mandrel bit box • No-bypass design: 100% flow to bit • Full flow to bit yields: • Ultra-Duty bearing mandrel for high torque power sections - Better bit and hole cleaning • Pin-down bearing mandrels available - Increased ROP • Optional BlackBox™ pocket on bearing mandrel - Better bit life • Ball-type driveshaft assembly • Ideal for rotary steerable applications: - Full flow to power rotary steerable - No signal loss when running MWD pulser below motor • Handles abrasive drilling fluids better – no flow restrictor wear • Best option for air drilling – not relying on mud to lubricate bearings
‘ST2’ Sealed Bearing Technology - (HEMIDRIL®-ST2H, PowerPLUS™-ST2H, Vector™-ST2, DURAPOWER™-ST2)
NOV ‘ST2’ Sealed Bearing Technology (previously known as Series 24 / 24X bearing assemblies) and ‘ST2H’ (previously known as Series 24XH bearing assemblies) are capable of withstanding radial and axial loads similar to the ‘ST3’ assemblies. This design incorporates the use of flow restrictors to balance the lower rotary seals and therefore bypasses a small percentage of drilling fluid away from the bit. They have logged over 4 million hours of successful drilling since year 2000.
‘ST1’ Sealed Bearing Technology - (Vector™-ST1, DuraPower™-ST1)
NOV ‘ST1’ Sealed Bearing Technology (previously known as Series 14 / 17 bearing assemblies) also incorporates the use of flow restrictors to balance the lower rotary seals and therefore bypasses a small percentage of drilling fluid away from the bit. This technology has also been used successfully for many years and smaller sizes are still regularly used.
‘ML3’ Mud Lubricated Technology - (HEMIDRIL®-ML3, PowerPLUS™-ML3, Vector™-ML3, DuraPower™-ML3) NOV ‘ML3’ Mud Lubricated Technology (previously known as the Series 40 bearing assembly) is designed with a mud lubricated bearing assembly featuring a bi-directional angular contact bearing pack that gives a uniform load distribution and high weight on bit capacity. In addition, the mud lubricated bearing assembly is radially supported over its entire length and can, therefore, tolerate very high side loads. The additional feature that separates the ML3 mud lubricated motor from competitors’ tools is the “Twin Torque Nut” design. This patentpending feature separates the power section output torque from the compression of the bearings, so the torque rating of the bearing assembly is not limited by the bearings. Features Benefits • Twin Torque Nut feature allows use with high torque power sections • Higher operating torques • Bi-Directional Angular Contact Bearing Pack - Tensile or compression • Higher bottom hole temperatures load is supported by multiple rows of bearings • Extended operating hours • Bearing Assembly is radially supported over its entire length • Easy to service; Beneficial in remote locations • Maximum operating temperature is limited only by power section • Versatile; Operates in virtually any drilling fluid • Ball-type driveshaft assembly • Higher weight-on-bit (WOB) capacity
‘SR3’ Short Radius Technology - (HEMIDRIL®-SR3, PowerPLUS™-SR3, Vector™-SR3, DuraPower™-SR3) NOV ‘SR3’ Short Radius Drilling Technology (previously known as the Series 39 bearing assembly) provides the ability to drill higher build rates, for short radius drilling. This uses a sealed bearing assembly – a shorter version of the ST3 design. Another use of a short bit-to-bend motor is to reduce the stresses in the adjustable assembly by drilling a standard radius curve but using a lower bend setting than a standard motor. This reduces the bending stresses experienced by the adjustable assembly, decreasing the risk of a housing fracture. Features Benefits • Short bit-to-bend length • Higher build rates and motor steerability • Sealed, oil-lubricated bearing assembly • Lower bend settings reduce stress on components • No-bypass design: 100% flow to bit • Minimizes True Vertical Depth (TVD) to reach horizontal • Ball-type driveshaft assembly 14
