This unit covers the competencies required to assist surveying and leveling DESCRIPTOR  operations and prepare longitudinal and cross sectional drawings while ensuring personal, others and equipment safety. CODE

1. Assist in setting out  buildings/ structures

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

2.Assist and establish levels using leveling instruments

2.1Levels taken as per the instructions given by the authorized person using standard leveling instruments with required accuracy 2.2Levels established according to the details given in the setting out plan or instructions given by the authorized  person following standard operating procedures 2.3Levels recorded in a surveying and leveling standard field book following rise and fall method or height of  collimation method 2.4Levels at stations calculated using rise and fall method or collimation method with respect to a given datum as  per given instructions by the authorized person.

3.Take off field measurements/ as  built measurements

3.1 Field measurements taken accurately within the tolerance limits 3.2All measurements gathered from the field, recorded in a field book, as per the standard method used

4. Prepare Longitudinal and Cross sectional. drawings

5. Measure extent of survey plan and area of cross sections

4.1 Longitudinal and cross sectional drawings drawn according to the horizontal and vertical scales ,grades checked and based on calculated reduced levels given  by the authorized person following standard drawing methods. 5.1 Extent of a given survey plan or area of cross section/s of longitudinal sections and cross sectional drawing measured within tolerance limits 5.2 Extent of a survey plan or cross section measured as per the drawing scale, using standard planimeter or  graphical method or drafting software

Context and conditions under which elements in this unit will be performed

Work associated with element no 01 of this unit may be performed in the field using instruments such as theodolite or similar instruments or builders square or using different geometrical techniques Work associated with element no. 02 of this unit, may be performed in the field using different leveling instruments such as dumpy level, engineer’s level or tilting level, and other relevant methods or techniques. The field may have varying ground conditions such as rolling mountain terrains, flat lands, a nd or in/on different related to civil engineering structures. Work associated with elements 4 and 5 of this unit may take place in a drawing office or in a site office or any other place where drawing instruments and facilities are available ELABORATION OF TERMS

Relevant lines, may include building line, road centre line, base line, centre line and excavation lines

Building line - a reference line established with respect to the boundary line or outline of an adjacent structure or centre line of an existing road Road centre line - a reference line which connects the centre points of the width of a road along the road Base line -a reference line which is considered as an arbitrary line for the purpose o f setting out Excavation lines - reference lines established to indicate the area or boundaries where excavations are required to be done for constructions such as foundation of structure, man holes and ducts, drains for underground transmission and power lines and pipe lines Centre lines of building/ structure - reference lines which connec t centre points of the foundation/s or a structure to establish different out lines.

Instructions may include information about the points / stations where levels are to be taken and the required accuracy Standard leveling instruments may include instruments such as Dumpy level, Engineer’s level or Tilting level used to take/ establish levels to required accuracy Datum refers to a reference station where the value of the level is known relative to the Mean Sea Level or Country National Reference Level. Sometimes datum may be an arbitrary selected reference station for the particular leveling activity Field measurements refers to all linear and angular measurements taken with reference to a given plane or planes

Tolerance limits : As per the recommended tolerance limits Longitudinal and cross sectional drawings may consist of cross sections, longitudinal sections including chainages, levels, grades, datum line, scales, profile of existing / proposed / as built surfaces with relevant titles and notes Standard drawing methods Common standard components of a drawing may include, title panel, Information panel, key, orientation, out lines and may vary from organization to organization Title panel may consist of job title, institute emblem, job no, drawing title, drawing reference number, major scale and sub scales, date drawn, and by whom the plan designed, drawn, checked and approved. Information panel may consist of notes, revision scheduled date, nature of the revision, revision reference number, person who approved with date Line types may include dotted line, hidden lines, centre lines, and continuous lines Views may vary as per the type of view such as isometric view, perspective view, parallel view,  bird’s eye view and worm’s eye view. Highlighting of important areas of a drawing may indicate using hatching, rendering, coloring, and decorating as per type of materials or context. 1.1 Two dimensional drawings drawn according to the standard formats and practices, as per the instructions given by an authorized person 1.2 Computer drafting tools used for making drawings as per the instructions in drafting software manual

2.1 Due consideration given to setting of pen assignments, line types, line weights, line colour and scales relevant to the drawing criteria 2.2 Two dimensional drawings plotted after preparation of   plot area adjusting plotter/ printer as per the standard drawing sheet
