Research Topic: Dr. Fazl-Ur-Rehman Ansari’s Educational Philosophy Need and Significance of the Study: From the land of Pakistan, a man’s soul quietly returned to Allah’s Mercy in the year 1970 CE. He was not an ordinary man but an academic world in himself. Intellectuals called him a dynamic philosopher. Clergymen viewed him as a profound theologian. Educationalist declared him a trend setter academician. Despite all these acknowledgements resulted due to his sound academic profile, his multi dimensional personality, his educational thoughts, his undying efforts, services and contributions in the arena of education and reformation, the hitherto research works on personalities done in the discipline of Education on university level in Pakistan unfortunately left this intellectual giant, his educational thoughts and academic contributions untouched. His name was Dr. Allama Hafiz Muhammad Fazl-Ur-Rehman Ansari (1914/1974 CE). Born in Muzaffar Nagar (Uttar Pardesh, British India) on 14th August 1914 CE, Ansari was brought up in an educated, civilized and religious family. His father Muhammad Khalil Ansari was a learned theologian and a man of intellect. Consequently, Ansari received a healthy learning environment at home which proved a milestone for his later great educational achievements and religious ventures. To acknowledge Ansari, Late Dr. Sir Zia-ud-Din, the celebrated mathematician and ex-vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University said on 11th August 1945: “I have great pleasure in testifying to the character and attainments of Mr. Hafiz Fazl-Ur-Rehman Ansari who has made his mark as a scholar of exceptional talent and ability”. All in all, Ansari was a multi-dimensional scholar, orator, missionary, teacher, author, spiritual leader, educationalist and a very widely-travelled servant of humanity. The famous Islamic personalities of Indo-Pak subcontinent like Sir Syed Ahmed Khan (1817/1898 CE) and Allama Iqbal (1877/1938 CE) paid great educational and academic services and had their unique educational thoughts despite their socioreligious views and efforts. Much has been researched and written on their 3
educational philosophies and services on university level in Pakistan and abroad. Viewing in the same scenario Dr. Ansari, who was the product of the region and the era of these intellectuals and who migrated to Pakistan just after partition and stayed there up to his last breath, there felt a need to explore his educational thoughts and academic contributions since he proved himself a multi-dimensional scholar, orator, missionary, teacher, author, spiritual leader, educationalist and a very widely-travelled servant of humanity. His educational services in the form of his writings, foundation of several institutes and societies, development of integrated curriculum for higher studies and its implementation and other related works call for conducting a deep study of his philosophy of education and thus systematically unveiling this hidden Muslim intellectual’s educational thoughts and contributions. Objectives of the Study: The present study has taken the following objectives into consideration: • To deeply study Dr. Fazl-Ur-Rehman Ansari and explore his academic caliber and educational services • To examine his works and publications to understand his thoughts • To explore his educational ideas and see their, uniqueness, practicality and significance • To urge national and international scholars to conduct research works on this intellectual and obtain great value and wisdom of his philosophy of education Review of the Literature: To review the literature on his biography, the researcher has taken into study three books in Urdu language. Studies, an educational and religious institute founded by him, will also be reviewed.
