JUNAN TAISO  柔軟体操 About Junan Taiso

- 柔軟体操

Junan Taiso is about learning how to condition your body for smooth natural movements during your taijutsu training. Your goal is to stretch and lengthen each muscle group in the body and learn how to manipulate each muscle, joint, and bone by touch. This will aide you in strengthening muscles, preventing injuries as well as doing ukemi when being taken down by an attacker. Remember to breathe deeply into the muscles that you are stretching and not to force the stretch.

Body Massage Massage Massaging hands (fingers), arms, shoulders, legs (knees), feet (toes), entire body. Briskly slap limbs of body with both hands to do a nerve awakening massage.

Attitude Conditioning, Body Balance & Muscle Muscle Strengthening Strengthening

Increasing the energy flow in your body by moving it properly will help create a positive attitude. Practice balance in movement by doing the posture flow drill. Also try standing on one leg while lifting the other leg up to side/front/back while maintaining balance. Running in place, and/or walking every day are also excellent.

KAMAE  (BASIC POSTURES)

Kamae stances are transitory postures that allow you to maintain balance while performing a technique. Being able to flow from one posture to another is crucial for effective taijutsu. You must be able to demonstrate each of these postures by name. Practice them slowly at first, utilizing effective weight shifting, maintaining proper balance and control (eliminate excess movements and create flow). Think of these three concepts: Posture, Center and Breath throughout your training.

Shizen no Kamae – (Natural Posture) 自然の構 Stand in a natural standing standing posture with both feet pointing po inting straight forward forward with your knees kept slightly slightly bent. Back is kept straight and your hands are naturally down at your sides, palms in, eyes straight ahead. ahea d. Breathe comfortably, lengthening the spine and be centered in yourself and your weight balance.

Seiza no Kamae – (Formal Sitting Posture) 正座の構

Sitting upright with legs tucked underneath you, your bottom sitting on your heels, top of feet flat on ground, with back straight and hands resting diagonally on upper thighs. Feel the energy and presence of being a warrior or samurai with swords. Hold yourself prepared and with strength of character. Za no kamae in Takagi Yoshin Ryu and Shinden Fudo Ryu are similar but in Takagi Yoshin Ryu you are sitting raised up on the balls of your feet with w ith toes toes tucked forward instead of the top of your feet flat on the ground toes extended backwards as in Seiza.

Cross-legged position done sitting sitting with one leg tucked under, heel placed in the center under base of spine. Can be done sitting on either leg but is usually done sitting on the left heel with the other leg bent naturally, Indian style.

Kongo Gassho no Kamae – (Palms Joined Posture) 今後合掌の構 Sitting Sitting in seiza, s eiza, hands are held palms together f ingers up in a prayer p rayer fashion approximately 1 1/2 fists distance in front of chest. Also done standing in shizen no kamae bring hands up in prayer fashion in front of chest.

Rei no Kamae (Bowing posture) 礼の構 From seiza no kamae, bend from the waist, lowering the head down in a bow. The left hand is placed on ground in front of you and then the right hand is placed (forming a triangle). Returning, right hand comes back, then left hand. Maintain a strong stron g seiza. Feel the energy or presence in your body as a powerful centered human being. being. Martial arts begin and end in respect and this begins with yourself. yourse lf.

KAMAE  (BASIC POSTURES)

Formal Rei (Bow) before training Sit in seiza. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself, letting go of anything pressing on you, forget the outside world for the length of your training time. This time is for focusing only on training. Say,“Shikin Say, “Shikin Haramitsu H aramitsu Daikomyo!”  Daikomyo!” and and bow (rei no kamae). Coming Coming back up clap twice, bow again, clap once. Bow again and say,“Onegai say, “Onegai shimasu.” When shimasu.” When getting up from seiza it is important to use as little extra movement as possible. You want to flow up, sliding one leg up in front of you and then the other. Before bowing out after training be sure to sit and reflect on what you have learned during the session.

Hira no Kamae - (Flat posture) 平の構 Stand looking forward with your legs a little wider than shoulder width keeping knees bent and back straight. Your arms are straight out to your sides with palms facing forward.

Ichimonji No Kamae - (Straight line posture) 一文字の構 From shizen let one leg fall back and out at a 45 degree angle, legs bent, with slightly more weight on the rear leg. The forward foot points straight (aligned with knee) at target. Rear heel is about 2 fist lengths out from front heel, foot points points out at a 45 degree angle (aligned (aligned with knee). Forward arm ar m extends out with hand open, fingers fingers pointing towards target’s eyes or heart. Back hand is also open and placed in the area between the cheek and shoulder as a guard with palm facing in. TAIHENJUTSU  (Basic falling, leaping & evading skills)

a rt of moving the body, utilizing basic falling and tumbling skills. There are many different kinds of  Taihenjutsu is the art rolling skills or  Ukemi; these required for 9th kyu are only the beginning. As you practice taihenjutsu work on relaxing the body and making a smooth connection to the ground while performing each technique. Rely on natural momentum to carry you you rather than force or strong muscle use. You must be able to perform perf orm all of the following basic Taihenjutsu skills first from a low squatting position using both of your hands for support, and then later (by 7th kyu) from standing position.

Zenpo Zagata Ukemi - forward breakfall (kneeling) 前方坐型受身 While kneeling place both hands palms out in front of face, hands and arms forming a triangle. Keeping arm position steady allow your body to fall forward without reaching for ground. Turn head to side as you fall, breathing out upon impact. Make sure to land squarely on forearms and hands. Foot can come up to kick behind you, if needed.

Koho Ukemi - backward breakfall 後方受身

From a squatting squa tting position slide slide one leg out in front f ront of you along the ground w hile falling falling backwards, backwar ds, rolling smoothly up the back and shoulder. This is not a roll but a breakfall. Keep as low to the ground as possible and make it as soft as possible.

DAKENTAIJUTSU  (STRIKING TECHNIQUES)

Daken Taijutsu consists of 16 striking fists that enable you to accurately hit the right target with the right part of the body. For 9th kyu level you must be able to demonstrate punching at various angles and heights as well as kicking from both shizen and ichimonji postures.

Fudoken - (Immovable Fist), basic fist 不動拳

Curl fingers into a fist, tucking the thumb over the curled fingers on the bo ttom of of the fist f ist as far as possible protecting it and adding strength to the fist. The desired impact area is with the first 2 upper knuckles of the fist on the target.

Tsuki - (Thrust / Punch) 突

Method 1: Natural Punch - From Shizen no kamae arm raises up extended from your side up as you step forward (weapon leads first) punching with fudoken - high, medium, low, remember to extend rear leg and to keep a low center  while punching. The punch should be at 80-90% of its extension when it hits the target and continues through the target.

Method 2: From Ichimonji no kamae, step forward with rear leg bringing punching hand to target. Punch is really from the knee and the whole body taijutsu, the hand just delivers the fist. Get this movement to flow together in unison, foot and fist landing at the same time.

DAKENTAIJUTSU  (STRIKING TECHNIQUES)

Sanshitan Ken - (Finger End Fist), 3 finger strike 三指端拳 Open hand, bending little finger and thumb together with thumb resting on little finger . Curl the remaining 3 fingers keeping them stiff for striking.

Shitoken / Boshiken – (Finger sword fist / Thumb finger fist) 指刀拳 / 拇指拳 (Demonstrated on the 7th kyu video but you will need to utilize it on 9th kyu for Chi no kata) From an open hand curl fingers fingers in, leaving thumb resting on top extended forward for ward as much as possible. The strike is w ith the the thumb, usually into soft targets or pressure points. While the fist itself is called a shitoken, this fist strike using the knees to drive it into the target is called a boshiken. You will hear this thumb fist referred to by both names so know them both.

Zenpo Geri - (forward heel stomp kick) 前方蹴

Method 1: From Shizen no kamae, bring up the knee to the chest first, then kick straight s traight out by extending extending the heel of the foot into the target. Remember to keep hands up while kicking.

DAKENTAIJUTSU  (STRIKING TECHNIQUES)

Method 2: From Ichimonji no kamae, first bring knee of the rear leg up to chest then kick out (by extending extending heel of foot). Think of striking all the way through to the back of your target. Kick through as if stomping a door down.

Tsuki/Keri combinations 手足和合

Practice punching & kicking kick ing from the postures postures you have ha ve learned so far and create combinations of punch/kick punch/kick - kick/punch kick/punch actions. Explore as many options options as you can think up while w hile doing only the 9th kyu material. Expand on this as you move through the kyus. Idea 1: From Shizen posture fall back into Ichimonji, punch forward then kick with opposite leg.

Idea 2: From Ichimonji kick forward with Zenpo geri then punch forward f orward as foot comes back down. Then move backwards into Ichimonji punching in place without moving the feet.

Helpful Training Not Note: e: DRILL EVERYTHING TO BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION FOUNDAT ION Realize that you are building a foundation with every technique you learn in these beginning kyus. Everything you learn from these beginning kyu study levels will affect your learning all the way through your Ninjutsu training. Foundations are everything in life. Foundations are important in your home, your personal body balance, your  checkbook, your job, your relationships, etc.. Without a strong foundation something is bound to suffer sometime. I cannot stress strong enough that just because a technique or series of moves seems very easy drill them anyway because everything that you do now gets built on as you progress through the kyu grades. Over 25 years of teaching has given me much insight and this is one I want to share with you right as you get started. Those who drill each level get BIG rewards as they work their way up the levels. They may seemingly start slower but they finish at BlackBelt sooner and stronger than others others who rush by the basics. Weak We ak foundations last sometimes way into a Dan lev level el and then a person struggles to go back and change a bad habit for a long time. Practice and drill these basics over and over so that they become automatic au tomatic to you. Second nature, if you will. Do them all until you can do d o them perfectly without having to think about it. Drill them until they can be done so smoothly that you can do them at will without needing to re-correct the hands or the footwork. Don’t go so fast in your training that you lose your foundation.

Remember - Practice does not make perfect  Remember perfect - only only  perfect practice pra ctice makes perfect!

SANSHIN NO KATA (EARTH FEELING FORM)

The Sanshin no Kata (three hearts method) is a set of 5 movement forms or patterns that teach very important principles of moving your body. They are thought to be the roots of all Budo. Later in your training you will see the value of  these forms so practice them with diligence and perfection. Although they will vary to fit the need when used in combat remember that you need to establish a solid form before working on a shadow of that form. Each form has a distinct feeling to it and when practiced diligently will give you much insight into doing advanced techniques. We begin our study with the Chi no Kata form. In the Chi no Kata form, you want to be very relaxed yet solid and grounded while moving. When performing this kata remember the feeling of earth - think solid like a mountain and imagine you are scooping the earth up or bowling a bowling ball. Let your movement and feeling reflect this.

Chi No Kata - Earth Ear th feeling feeling form / Goshitan Goshitan ken daho 地の型 Method 1 (Formal waza): Begin in Shizen no kamae. Drop back with right leg into Ichimonji no kamae posture, left hand out and right hand on hip in a shito ken (thumb fist). As your rear foot steps forward, rear thumb fist swings forward with arm extended in an upward up ward pendulum fashion turning into a sanshitan ken (three finger strike) s trike) targeting throat throat or under un der ribs. At the same time as you are ar e striking with your right hand the left hand pulls back into a shito ken on the left hip. Remember  to extend all the way from the back (left) leg into your opponent.

Method 2 (alternate footwork and strikes): Add a second s econd strike with w ith the other arm and then learn to alternate footwork and strikes. After striking, bring opposite hand into strike utilizing same upward pendulum motion while switching footwork, alternating alternating sides. As one hand strikes s trikes with the sanshitan ken, the other hand immediately immediately goes back ba ck to hip in shitoken. In martial arts your proper angling, distancing and timing are very important. The first thing to learn is proper  distancing and evasion. Move with all of your body from the centerline. Proper distancing gives you more time to act. Practice with a partner.

SANSHIN NO KATA (EARTH FEELING FORM) TAISABAKI TAI SABAKI GATA GATA - Body Evasion Skills 体捌き型 In martial arts proper angling, distancing and timing are very important. The first thing you learn is proper distancing and evasion. Move with all of your body from the centerline. Proper distancing gives you more time to act. Practice with a partner. Method 1: Defender stands in Shizen posture, attacker punches from Ichimonji posture. As a punch comes in evade, falling back at a 45 degree angle, arms floating up into Ichimonji with your forward hand and knee pointing towards your  target. Strike the attacker’s wrist using a circular motion with your fist in fudoken

.

Method 2: Same as above abo ve except except that defender is already in Ichimonji no kamae.

9th kyu Weapons Skills

In this course every kyu grade has a weapon skill associated with it. For 9th kyu we want you to consider your entire body as a weapon and start to integrate your movement, using all of you with directed intention and focus. By cutting out unnecessary movement in both your training and your life and by focusing your intention on your target goals you can change your life. It will look to others as if you move through life effortlessly!
