 A.I.M JUNIORS Session 2 review

Overview Introduction Firstly, thank you for coming. I hope you enjoyed the session, and got something out of it. it . Afer each session, I will be sending one of these out, detailing what we talked about, including notes and ideas, along with places to learn more, Enjoy!

Trick  T rick We spoke about a trick called “forget to remember” (I have no idea why it’s called that), in case you forgot, here is a short explanation. Eff ect ect

The spectator deals through through the cards one at a time, stopping when ever they want. In the fairest way, they stop, remember the card, and lose it back into the deck and shu ff le. le. To make thing’s more random, they think of a card of the same suit as the one they choose. They are now thinking of a new card. With a snap, the card they thought of is now gone from the deck, which you never touched, and is found in your wallet. Ta Da. Set up

The Ace-10 of hearts, shu ff led, led, on top on the deck, then place 5 random cards on top of that. So top down, 5 random cards, then the Ace-10 of hearts in a shu ff led led order, order, then the remainder of the deck. The queen of hearts in the centre of the deck, the Jack of hearts in the card box, and the king of hearts in your wallet (or anywhere else, if you don’t have a wallet). Method

Begin by saying you’re going to remove the joker, because it won’t work for this e ff ect. ect. Spread through the deck and actually removed the queen of hearts, without the spectator seeing it, and place it, face down to the side. Explain that you are not going to touch the cards again. Give the spectator the deck, and ask them to slowly deal the cards, face down, one at a time and stop when ever they want. This is done to force one of the hearts. By dealing slowly, they’re less likely to deal past the hearts (position 6-18), and the block of 5 cards onto gives you a even bigger buff er. er. Once they stop, be very fair and let them choose either the card on the table they’ve just dealt, or on the deck, since they’re both hearts. Have them return the card to the deck,

and shuff le. le. Explain that maybe you saw the card, or made them pick it, so we’ll make thugs more random. “Don’t worry about the suit, that won’t change, but, If you’re thinking of a picture card, change to ANY number card, and If you’re thinking of a number card, change to ANY picture card. So, if you’re thinking of the 4 of clubs, you might change it to the king of clubs, or maybe you had the jack of diamonds, which is now the 7 of diamonds.” It’s important to clearly explain what you want them to do, and give examples, as you don’t want them to do the wrong thing. It’s also important to use the word “thinking of ” because at the end, you want to refrain the trick as any thought of card, where in reality, they had a choice of only 3. Now you do the magic, maybe a snap, or wave or what ever, and have them go through the cards to show its gone.  You now now reveal the out relating to their card. card. If they thought of the jack of hearts, hearts, show it in the box, box, and so on. Notes

• You can can have the 3 court court cards cards be anywhere, anywhere, on walls, walls, under tables tables or chairs, chairs, in boxes etc, but make make sure their each equally as amazing, you never want to be disappointed by the outcome because it’s the worst. • If they deal more then 18 cards, cards, get them to stop soon soon by saying something like “you need to stop soon, we don’t want to many cards for this”. Once you know how many cards there are, you can go from there, for instance, if you know theres 20 cards in the pile, you could say “Name a number between one and ten” and take that card. Note that this rarely happens, people don’t deal more than 18 cards in most circumstances. Another way to get them to stop early is to go silent. Dealing cards in total quiet is awkward, and people don’t want to do it for long. • It is important important to to know what what the card card is before before it vanishes. vanishes. Asking Asking them afer it vanishes makes it more likely they won’t tell you. The way I handle is is I square the cards, snap, and li f the stop card of the deck and hold it towards me. I remind them what happened, “You shu ff led, led, thought of a card, I never touched the deck…What card are you thinking about”. This implies the trick was their card came to the top. When they say, I turn the card around and and say “perfect”. Then we go through the deck, its i ts gone, and we proceed.

Further reading Free Alex Pandrea teaches 3 of the best flash cuts on his youtube channel. 52Kards also teaches a lot of great stuff , including a false ri ff le le shuff le, le, false overhand shuff le, le, and many various false cuts. 1 2 3 4 5 Card controls are a massive topic, and since we did’t really cover it, I wont go into detail, but, since I know you love Chris Ramsay, here’s his favourite.

Paid The optical shuff le le I spoke about (The one where I shu ff le le nothing) is taught really well by Jared Kopf. Kopf. Ben Earl also teaches it, and many other amazing shu ff les les and cuts, and spectacular routines in his book and DVD on ace cutting. I would highly recomme recommend nd them both. Patrick Redford teaches a really great overhand shu ff le le in his penguin lecture, lecture, along with a lot of amazing stack deck magic . He also teaches it in his false shu ff le le project . Karl Hein also has a false shu ff le le and cut project that is really great. great. Karl also teaches a couple in his At the table lecture. Joshua Jay and Woody Aragon also teach their false shu ff les les in their at the table lectures. Card College teaches many, many false shu ff les, les, cuts, controls (and everything else) across the 5 volumes, with each volume getting progressively more advanced. They’re must have.

Other The False shuff le le I was doing, Derek DelGaudios one, is very di ff icult icult to find. Ben Earl teaches his variation on his 3 DVD set, and Karl Hein teaches his variation on the shuff le le project I mentioned above, but, finding the actual truff le le shuff le le is nearly impossible. If you’re interested in learning it, let me know, and we’ll see what we can do.
