14

How to assemble the toy 1. Put the outer part of the head on the inner one (it should touch the body at the back). Separate the end of the yarn that was left for sewing into two parts, insert one part into a needle (put the second part aside for a while). The seam will look neater this way. Sew the outer part of the head starting with the bridge of the nose. Place the bridge of the nose right between the eyes (for the male toy: approximately between Rows 20 and 21 of the inner part of the head; for the female toy: approximately between Rows 19 and 20). Sew the inner part to the outer one around the whole piece. If the thread isn`t long enough, take the second part of the thread (that was put aside) and use it for sewing but move to the other direction.

15

2. Tightening of the eyes The tightening of the eyes is the same for all of my toys. So, if you have my crochet patterns, make the same actions as it is explained there. Consists of two stages: Tighten the eyes down. For tightening the eyes, I take a long needle. Insert the long thread of the head colour into this needle. 1. Insert the needle into the middle of the neck, draw it out at the center of the outer part of the first eye; 2. Insert the needle into the center of the inner part of this eye, draw it out at the middle of the neck where it was inserted at the start; 3. There will be a loop, tighten it; 16

4. Insert the needle with the same thread into the middle of the neck slightly to the right (1sc) from the point where it was first inserted. Draw it out at the centre of the outer part of the second eye; 5. Insert the needle into the center of the inner part of the second eye, draw it out at the neck again. There will be a loop, tighten it; 6. Pull one end of the thread, then pull the other one. If the eyes are not symmetrical fix them by hand.

You can leave the tightening at this stage. But I prefer to make the 2nd stage as well, I tighten the eyes to the center. Keep working with the same thread: 1. Insert the needle into the middle of the neck, draw it out at the center of the upper part of the first eye. 17

2. Insert the needle into the center of the lower part of this eye, draw it out at the middle of the neck again. There will be a loop, tighten it from the muzzle’s side. 3. Make the same actions with the second eye. Thus, the eyes are set deep and beautiful cheeks are formed. Tie the ends of the threads that are left after the tightening of the eyes together, cut them and hide them into the head.

3. Embroider the whites of the eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows (if you want). For making eyelashes I separate the black yarn into threads and use only one of them. You can also draw the cheeks (I use blush or a crayon). 18

4. Sew the beak (the big part above the small part). Sew the tummy approximately between Rows 39 and 55 of the body. For sewing the tummy separate the yarn end into two parts as we have done it for sewing the outer part of the head to the inner one.

5. Sew the flippers at the angle (at the level of Rows 35-37 of the body).

19

6. Sew the legs as it is shown on the photo (between Rows 62 and 63 of the body). I also sew them to the body at the level of Rows 9-10 of the legs so that they wouldn`t fall down.

7. Sew the tail between Rows 56 and 57 of the body.

20

Your baby penguin is done!

Headphones 1. Cut the floral wire into 18 cm (7 inches) pieces (I make 6 pieces). The wire is quite thin so you can cut it with scissors. Bind them all together with an adhesive tape, pay attention to the ends. Do not make the tape layer thick so that the wire could be inserted into the crocheting piece. 2. Work the crocheting piece: 10 sc in mc, then work in rounds till the piece becomes a bit longer than the binded wire. 3. Insert the wire into the crocheting piece and sew the ends with the help of a needle.

21

4. Each ear pad consists of two parts: The outer part. Start working with Yarn Art Jeans. Row 1: 6 sc in mc (6) Row 2: 6 inc (12) Row 3: (1 sc, inc) х 6 (18) Row 4: (2 sc, inc) х 6 (24), switch to Alize Softy yarn and keep working Row 5: (3 sc, inc) х 6 (30) Rows 6 – 7: 30 sc, sl st Important! Because of the structure of Alize Softy yarn the stitches cannot be seen well, work by eye. Put a marker and work 30 sc. Nothing bad will happen if you make a bit 22

more or less stitches (the size of the ear pad will not change and it won`t be noticing on the whole piece). Cut the thread leaving a long tail for sewing the pieces. The inner part The whole part is worked with Alize Softy. Row 1: 6 sc in mc (6) Row 2: 6 inc (12) Row 3: (1 sc, inc) х 6 (18) Row 4: (2 sc, inc) х 6 (24) Row 5: (3 sc, inc) х 6 (30), sl st. Cut the thread, hide the end into the piece. Work by eye. Don`t try to count the stitches, keep working till the diameter of this circle equals the diameter of the outer part.

5. Sew the both parts of the ear pad as it is shown on the photo. 23

6. You should also stuff the ear pad with fiberfill while sewing. Do not stuff it tight otherwise the inner part of the pad will be bulging and won’t adjoin the head properly. 7. Do not finish the sewing, leave a hole for inserting the headband. Insert it on 1 cm (0.4 inches) inside. Keep sewing together with the headband. Cut the thread, hide the end inside the ear pad. 8. Do the same actions with the second ear pad.

24

Scarf Work 5 ch with pink yarn. Turn the piece and work 4 sc starting with the 2nd stitch from the hook. Keep working back and forth rows with 4 sc starting each new row with 1 ch. I change the yarn colour every 4 rows. On the wrong side the threads will change each other neatly. Keep working till the length of the scarf becomes 53 cm (21 inches). Work two pompons with Alize Softy: Row 1: 6 sc in mc (6) Row 2: 6 inc (12) Row 3: (1 sc, inc) х 6 (18) Rows 4 - 6: 18 sc Row 7: (1 sc, dec) х 6 (12) Row 8: 6 dec. Sew the hole. Stuff the pompons slightly with fiberfill and sew them to the scarf.

25

Hat Start with white yarn: Row 1: 6 sc in mc (6) Row 2: 6 inc (12) Row 3: (1 sc, inc) х 6 (18) Row 4: (2 sc, inc) х 6 (24) Row 5: (3 sc, inc) х 6 (30) Row 6: (4 sc, inc) х 6 (36) Row 7: (5 sc, inc) х 6 (42) Row 8: (6 sc, inc) х 6 (48) Row 9: 48 sc, change the colour With blue colour: 26

Row 10: (7 sc, inc) х 6 (54) Row 11: 54 sc, change the colour With light-blue colour: Row 12: (8 sc, inc) х 6 (60) Row 13: (9 sc, inc) х 6 (66) Row 14: 66 sc, change the colour With blue colour: Row 15: 66 sc, change the colour With light-blue colour: Rows 16 – 22: 66 sc, sl st. Cut the thread, hide the end.

27

The first ear: Row 1: Count 8 stitches to the right from the sl st, insert the hook into the 9 th stitch, join the light-blue thread, work 1 ch (count it as the 1st sc) and work 10 sc (11). Keep working back and forth rows starting each new row with 1 ch. Rows 2 – 3: 11 sc Row 4: dec, 9 sc (10) Row 5: 10 sc Row 6: 1 dec, 8 sc (9) Row 7: 9 sc Row 8: 1 dec, 7 sc (8) Row 9: 8 sc. Cut the thread, hide the end. The second ear: Row 1: count 28 stitches from the first ear along the front part of the hat, insert the hook into the 29th stitch, work 1 ch (count it as the first sc), work 10 sc (11). Keep working back and forth rows starting each new row with 1 ch. Rows 2 – 3: 11 sc Row 4: 9 sc, dec (10) Row 5: 10 sc Row 6: 8 sc, 1 dec (9) Row 7: 9 sc Row 8: 7 sc, 1 dec (8) 28

Row 9: 8 sc. Cut the thread, hide the end.

Join the blue thread to the back part of the hat (at the point where the last sl st was made). Work the whole edge of the hat with sc making decreases and increases at those places at which the arrows point (check the photo). Work the second ear in the same manner. Cut the thread, hide the end. 29

Pompon Wrap four fingers with the yarn of three colours simultaneously. I wrap 25 times. If you want the pompon to be puffier, wrap the yarn about the fingers 30 times. Then do the actions that are shown on the photo: form the bridge (the ends of the bridge are to be hidden into itself afterwards). Cut the pompon with scissors as it is shown on the photo. Make the edges even with the scissors and make it puffy with a brush. Sew the pompon to the top of the hat.

Straps Join the blue thread to the center of the ear and work 50 ch. Tie a knot at the end. Work the second strap in the same manner. Embroider the snowflakes at the level of Rows 18-21 of the hat.
