Dire Foes Mission Pack: Fleeting Alliance...

Description

DEEP SPACE TRAGEDY!

The summit meeting gathering spokespersons from each of the PanOceanian corporations forming the Group of Six has ended in tragedy today. The famous luxury cruise ship, SCS Stella Solaris, served as a unique backdrop for the far-reaching negotiations between a consortium that remains unnamed by the authorities and executives from the Group of Six, formed by Moto.tronica, Omnia Research, MagnaObra, Minescorp, Multicomm and Oxyd. According to information from the cruise spaceship’s owner company, a breach in the private Observation Room where the meeting was being held caused an explosive decompression in the area. One of the Minescorp representatives, deputy secretary Victor Montcrief [See: Public profile], died in the accident. Several other executives in the room suffered injuries of varying severity. Observation Rooms are transparent domes made of reinforced glass-like materials and equipped with extreme security measures to guarantee their structural integrity. The Stella Solaris happened to have successfully passed a surprise inspection by the Bureau Hermes immediately before it set out on its ill-fated course. Specialists believe the most likely cause of the tragic breach was the impact of a high-velocity micrometeoroid.

The markets have immediately reacted to the news. Shares in each of the companies in the Group of Six have fallen sharply, with Minescorp suffering the biggest hit on the stock exchange [More: Real-time Stock Market data]. The SCS Stella Solaris is the flagship of the Royal Spacer Unlimited, the biggest cruise spaceship company in the Human Sphere. This Splendour-class, high-luxury line cruise ship was a regular retreat for the jet set and had starred in many well-known Maya productions [Stella Solaris image archive]. ENCRYPTED MESSAGE

Dear Madam Ambassador: It pleases me to say that representative Diaan Mareeta is recuperating satisfactorily from the serious intoxication she suffered three days ago. She is expected to be back to full health in a short time, whereupon she will resume her diplomatic duties. Samples of all foodstuffs consumed by representative Mareeta have been taken with the aim of determining whether they were maliciously tampered with or, on the contrary, their degradation was the result of an inadvertent failure in the storage systems of our victuals. Regrettably, our limited influence upon human public safety organizations precludes us from verifying the integrity of the chain of custody of the meals. Should it transpire that the chain was compromised, such information would lend considerable credibility to the hypothesis that there was an attempt on the life of representative Mareeta.

DIRE FOES MISSION PACK: FLEETING ALLIANCE

Incidentally, my colleagues and I are healing adequately from the mild injuries suffered during the events of that evening, and are deeply appreciative of the gestures of support we have received from the Embassy. Yours sincerely, Head Assistant Elioo Turaada [Signature authenticated] Encrypted Tohaa transmission. Diplomatic priority channel. Origin: cruiser SCS Stella Solaris, deep space of system Varuna. Destination: Tohaa Embassy in the Free Island of Sálvora, Paradiso.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

Thrasymedes carefully stepped into the engineering room, sweeping each corner that could conceal an enemy with his gun. “Honestly, honey, we need to stop meeting like this.” Leaning against the main console, a mischievous grin on her face, was Lupe Balboa. The barrel of her pistol, and the wary eyes of the drakomon on her shoulder, were both firmly trained on the ALEPH operative.

Cracking a broad smile, Thrasymedes lowered his gun and turned off the tracking and monitoring programs installed in his systems. “I knew it had to be you from the way that stupid securibot just blew up.” Thrasymedes stepped towards Lupe and held her in his arms. “Hey! Don’t go around speaking ill of one of your ancestors!” Lupe protested with mock outrage. “Don’t talk like that,” said Thrasymedes in a slighted tone, pushing her aside. “I am not a robot.” “That’s right, you’re not. You’re a little ALEPH tin soldier and also a Maya star. When are you going to hook me up with a role in Myrmidon Wars, the animated series? I’d make a kickass villain…” Lupe started striking poses with a coy smile. “Just look at me, I’m a dyed-in-the-wool nefarious Nomad femme fatale. You can’t go wrong with that!” “You are fatale all right, but you got the wrong Homerid. Thamyris is the PR of the team. All I know about is war and special operations.” “Speaking of, I heard the representative of the Tohaa delegation had ended up ‘indisposed’, but I didn’t think it was you guys…”

MARINE ENGINEERING OFFICER

“All systems green. We’re ready to depart, sir.”

Julie McCoy, Marine Engineering officer of the cruise spaceship SS Stella Solaris.

Quite ironically, this untoward incident has resulted in the serendipitous absence of representative Mareeta from the summit organized by PanOceanian businessmen, the unfortunate ending of which you already know.

“ALEPH likes to keep our alien allies on a short leash, and doesn’t care for them striking deals in secret. At least she was just ‘indisposed,’ unlike the delegation of PanOceanian executives.” “Alas! These pleasure vessels were made for enjoyment, but they are sorely lacking in security measures…” Lupe’s innocent pout was fooling no one. “I am sure that poor marine officer would agree,” said the Homerid looking sideways at the unconscious body of the uniformed woman lying in the corner. “This lovely lady was kind enough to give us a moment of privacy,” a gloved hand caressed Thrasymedes’ shoulder, “and for that you should be thankful.”

“You seem awfully confident in your victory.” Thrasymedes put on what passed for an arrogant smile. Lupe got the drakomon to climb back onto her shoulder. She grabbed the unconscious body of the engineering officer and half-turned towards the Homerid. “You just stay here nice and quiet, and that perky little synthetic ass of yours will be safe and sound,” replied the Nomad agent, accompanying her words with a meaningful glance. “I don’t think this relationship is going to work out,” sighed Thrasymedes.

Thrasymedes embraced the Vortex again while he kissed her. This prompted the drakomon to jump away from her shoulder with an irate hiss. “Make sure to deliver this kiss to her as a gesture of gratitude, when your job is done here,” he murmured as their lips parted.

“Fine, back to work. I guess you must have the second pass key, then.” Thrasymedes entered his sequence into the main console with efficient motions. The holographic display showed two messages: “Key verified. Awaiting confirmation of identity” and “Supplementary key needed. Please enter.” “So we are teaming up for this? And then what?” Lupe grilled him. “We just fire at each other for a while?” Thrasymedes turned to face the Vortex and, locking eyes with her, replied solemnly: “You know this is the only way. We input the keys, activate the system, and then we do whatever we have to do to save face in front of our superiors.” Lupe simply shrugged. She stepped towards the console, the overskirt of her uniform swaying around her hips. “That’s fine in my book. Nomad officers don’t care much about procedures—only results. Not like yours.” Lupe entered the profile name and the key. The systems buzzed to life. “So once the boys and I kick your team’s asses, my bosses are not going to waste time asking questions.”

“Oops, it would seem my big bad boy forgot he had a little errand of his own,” said Lupe, stepping away, “and that time is running short.”

“No. It’s just that, ever since I came into the room, you have kept your gun trained on me every single second.” “Oh, boy. Thrasymedes, you still have so much to learn!” Lupe’s face was a smirk of superiority when she stepped out of the room, dragging the marine officer behind her. CHANDRA SERGEANT THRASYMEDES

DIRE FOES MISSION PACK: FLEETING ALLIANCE. CHARACTERS CHANDRA SERGEANT THRASYMEDES

Thrasymedes (from Ancient Greek Θρασυμήδης/ Thrasumếdês). Son of Nestor, king of Pylos. One of the youngest Greek captains to take part in the Trojan War, where he commanded fifteen ships alongside his brother Antilochus. He fought bravely in several battles, but was given an ancillary role in the story. He was also part of the contingent that infiltrated the city inside the Trojan Horse. Notes by Thamyris the Aoidos for the SSS Information Service: “Thrasymedes is our point man. He is always ahead of us, scouring the terrain and guarding us from unwelcome surprises. His courage is unquestionable, but sometimes I wonder whether the reason why he pushes onward and leaves us behind is that he just cannot stomach us…”

Thrasymedes wistfully remembers the Steel Phalanx in the days before Achilles, when he fought in the regular forces of the Assault Subsection. Despite the fury and bloodshed, there was a certain strategy, a certain balance in the way the Corps conducted itself back then. But everything changed with the arrival of the blond titan. Achilles’ extraordinary tactical capabilities let him see opportunity where others see only disaster. However, his notorious wrath and ruthlessness also make him push the units under his command too far, often putting them in “all or nothing” positions. To alleviate the situation and minimize the risk, Thrasymedes specialized in advance and incursion actions, in which he draws hostile fire to gauge enemy forces and provide data to assess the tactical scenario with further precision. His bravery and extraordinary abilities caught the eye of Achilles himself, who recruited Thrasymedes for his Homeridae. Ironically, Thrasymedes wound up in the group of champions that was a symbol for what he most detested: unbridled heroism. The effectiveness of the team, on the other hand, was beyond question, and his skills were a perfect match for it. He felt he could make a difference there. What makes Thrasymedes a hero is that he is all about victory, and he will do anything for it. And “anything” is not an overstatement. It is believed that the explosive projectile that injured Achilles and halted his suicidal charge across the plains of Strackenz was fired by none other than Thrasymedes, who was worried that the hasty assault would weaken the flank threatened by Morat Vanguard Infantry. This theory has never been proven, however, and if Achilles shares it he doesn’t seem to hold any resentment. The ability to act independently and unilaterally is a valued trait among those who must work far from friendly lines. Nevertheless, this type of behavior is unnerving, and it seems likely that ALEPH would take steps to ensure Thrasymedes is under close control and scrutiny, perhaps as part of Atalanta’s secret assignments.

Dire Foes Mission Dossier. Copyright Corvus Belli S.L.L. www.infinitythegame.com

“Why, you think ALEPH will find out about our little secret in one of the brain scans you tin soldiers have to take?”

ALGUACIL VORTEX LUPE BALBOA “Sorry, are you trying to say something? I can’t hear you over the sound of me kicking your ass.” Vortex Guadalupe “Lupe” Balboa.

“That’s not a gun you’ve got there, that’s a peashooter. Now this is a gun That’s not a gun. THAT’S a gun. The Panzerfaust is the sledgehammer of the arms industry. This can tear your ass a new hole you could park a fucking shuttle in.” Vortex Lupe Balboa. Nomad-PanOceanian joint operations on the Wotan Blockade. Paradiso system. Second Offensive.

“Yeah, I probably say ‘ass’ too much…” Attributed to Vortex Lupe Balboa. Overheard at Cantina 37. Remora module Kiwasani J-09. Lazareto. Corregidor.

She was given a choice to commute her sentence for a job in the Nomad intelligence service, which didn’t do much for her safety concerns but offered better working conditions. Lupe took the offer, asking only two things in return. The first was to be allowed to travel with her drakomon Pancho. Drakomons, biomodified lizards initially designed as pets for kids, turned out to have quite a temper. This made them unpopular except among spaceship crews, who use them as pest control for maintenance areas and engine rooms. Lupe found Pancho napping inside her backpack during the labor conflicts of the Jovian collector factories. It is unclear who adopted whom, but ultimately the drakomon hatchling found in Lupe a loving home. Penal regiments are, unsurprisingly, home to plenty of crooks, and Pancho had the chance to earn its daily dish of meatballs by guarding Lupe’s belongings while she was on duty, a taxing job in its own right.

“Hssssss”.

Lupe Balboa doesn’t believe in love. It sounds a bit harsh, a bit disheartening. It’s not the kind of thing one likes to hear about a girl. But we’re talking here about a former technician from the Corregidor emergency teams who, after a fifteen-hour shift, returned to her cabin only to find her boyfriend cavorting with one of the pulpfor-brains girls from down in management. Lupe got a double-whammy sentence: aggravated assault for what she did to her sweetheart with a wrench, and attempted murder for reversing the oxygen/ carbon dioxide airflow in his lover’s cabin. Usually she would’ve done time patching the ship in an inmate labor group, but her ex happened to be the judge’s nephew, so they tossed her into a tactical penal regiment. For five long years Lupe did nothing but jump from one craphole to the next, working her ass off without the right tools for the job, always on the edge of collapse from obsolete and incomplete life support units, and generally being put in the worst predicaments imaginable because High Command didn’t exactly have her survival as a priority. But Lupe is nothing if not stubborn, and kept her shit together long enough to arouse the curiosity of the Black Hand.

As for the second of Lupe’s requests, given the Black Hand’s penchant for secrecy, no one knows its exact nature. Some believe it must be connected to the bizarrely scatological events of her ex-boyfriend’s wedding: when the wedding cake arrived, it turned out to be drenched in drakomon urine. So, even though Lupe Balboa doesn’t believe in love, she does believe in revenge as long as it’s served cold for dessert. MARINE ENGINEERING OFFICER “All systems green. We’re ready to depart, sir.” Julie McCoy, Marine Engineering officer of the cruise spaceship SS Stella Solaris.

Without spaceships, there would be no interstellar travel or trade. Circulars, motherships, star cruisers and intrasystem vehicles, these are the pillars of the expansion and development of Humanity. Like all hyper-technological tools, spaceships are devices of astounding complexity. The bridge is the realm of the captain, but the Engineering Officer has dominion over the engine room, the guts of the beast. From the oil-covered chief mechanics of independent vessels to the immaculately professional officers of commercial liners, they all share a single responsibility. In their hands rests the difference between a timely, safe flight and a premature end as debris drifting through the void.

FLEETING ALLIANCE Mission accomplished! Or almost. All that’s left now is to evacuate your team from the ship and leave no trace of your presence there. If you can’t get them all out, at least make sure no one who can be interrogated is left behind.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES

»» Use the Authorized Specialist to initialize the Evacuation System (1 extra Objective Point). »» Evacuate the Authorized Specialist (1 extra Objective Point).

CLASSIFIED

Unsurprisingly though, there’s bad news and worse news. The bad: for a summit like the one you just sabotaged, even a civilian cruise ship like the SS Stella Solaris has been fitted with armed securibots. The worse: the rival team probably has the same escape plan as you. You weren’t able to locate the second pass key for the Evacuation System, so chances are they have it. Without it, there is no way out. You need two pass keys to activate the system, and they can only be entered by authorized personnel. Check your comlog: even if you take the key from them, there isn’t time to forge a second authorization. Come to think of it, your enemies are in the same predicament as you, aren’t they? That means you can convince them to strike a truce of some kind until the evacuation system is up and running, and then…then bullets can fly.

MISSION OBJECTIVES MAIN OBJECTIVES

»» Activate the Generator (1 Objective Point). »» Initialize the Evacuation System (1 Objective Point

for each player). »» Control the Evacuation Console at the end of the game (1 Objective Point). »» Have the Marine Engineering Officer synchronized at the end of the game (1 Objective Point). »» Evacuate more troops than the opponent (1 Objective Point per evacuation exceeding the opponent’s, up to a maximum of 4 Objective Points).

Each player has 1 Classified Objective (1 Objective Point). A player’s Objective Point count cannot exceed 10 points for this mission. If a player obtained 10 Objective Points via main and secondary objectives, ignore that player’s Classified Objective. FORCES Side A: 300 points. Side B: 300 points. DEPLOYMENT SIDE A and SIDE B: Both players deploy on opposite

sides of the game table, in an area 12 inches deep.

This scenario is set inside a facility so the use of the Special Skill Airborne Deployment (AD) is not allowed. Deploying in base contact with the Generator Consoles or the Objective Room, or inside the latter, is not permitted. GAMING GUIDE: MISSION SEQUENCE 1. Activate a Generator Console. 2. Activate the Evacuation Console (Both players must do it during their first Game Turn). 3. Evacuate eligible troops using the Evacuation Elevators. 4. Evacuate the Authorized Specialist. 5. Control the Evacuation Console. 6. Synchronize the Marine Engineering Officer.

Dire Foes Mission Dossier. Copyright Corvus Belli S.L.L. www.infinitythegame.com

Now go do what needs doing: turn on the emergency generator to activate the evacuation system so it can’t be deactivated from the ship’s command bridge. Then, get hold of the evacuation console and the Marine Engineering Officer on duty, to keep them from aborting the operation. Doesn’t sound too hard.

SCENARIO SPECIAL RULES

They will not react against the troops of a player who, at any time during that Player Turn, has had the Marine Engineering Officer Synchronized.

Game table size: 48 x 48 inches

The Security Remotes have the Special Skill Total Reaction and a 360º Visor. They are armed with a Combi Rifle and an Electric Pulse.

GENERATOR CONSOLES

The Generator can be turned on using the Generator Consoles. There are two Generator Consoles, each placed on one half of the table. Both are located 8 inches from the central line of the table and 24 inches from the edge of the table (See map below).

There are four Security Remotes. Two of them are placed on the central line of the table, 8 inches from the edge of the game table. The other two are on each half of the table, in base contact with one of the Security Room Gates (See map below).

The Generator Consoles must be represented by a Console A Marker or by a scenery piece of the same diameter (Such as the Human Consoles by Micro Art Studio or the Tech Consoles by Warsenal).

OBJECTIVE ROOM

Placed in the center of the table, it has an area of 8 x 8 inches. In game terms it is considered to have walls of infinite height that completely block Line of Fire. It has four open Gates, one in the middle of each wall (See map below).

To Activate a Generator Console, a Specialist Troop must be in base contact with it, spend one Short Skill of an Order or an ARO, and succeed at a Normal WIP Roll. If the roll is failed, it can be repeated as many times as necessary, each time spending the corresponding Short Skill of an Order or ARO.

To represent the Objective Room, we recommend using the Objective Room by Micro Art Studio or the Command Bunker by Warsenal.

SECURITY REMOTES

These Remotes are fixed to the floor and cannot move. They must be represented by a Security Remote Marker (Sec. REM) with the height of a model’s base, or by a scenery piece of the same diameter.

The Objective Room Gates must be represented by a Narrow Gate Marker or a scenery piece with the same size. Troops with a base wider than the length of the marker cannot cross the threshold.

Security Remotes are reactive elements. They activate in response to any Order declared by an active figure in LOF, but not by Markers.

INITIALIZING THE EVACUATION SYSTEM

MARINE ENGINEERING OFFICER

The Evacuation System must be initialized before the Evacuation Elevators can be used.

The Marine Engineering Officer has the troop profile of a Neutral Civvie, and applies the Civvie rules (See Infinity: Human Sphere) with regards to synchronization.

The Evacuation System will be considered initialized and operational in the Game Turn following the one in which both players have Activated the Evacuation Console. ACTIVATING THE EVACUATION CONSOLE

There is one Evacuation Console placed in the center of the Objective Room. The Evacuation Console must be represented by a Console B Marker or by a scenery piece of the same diameter (such as the Human Consoles by Micro Art Studio or the Tech Consoles by Warsenal). To Activate the Evacuation Console, a Specialist Troop must be in base contact with it, spend one Short Skill of an Order or an ARO, and succeed at a Normal WIP Roll. If the roll is failed, it can be repeated as many times as necessary, each time spending the corresponding Short Skill of an Order or ARO. Only Specialist Troops can Activate the Evacuation Console. Both players must Activate the Evacuation Console in the first Game Turn (See: End of the Mission). CONTROLLING THE EVACUATION CONSOLE

The Evacuation Console is considered to be Controlled by a player as long as that player is the only one with at least one Specialist Troop (as a model, not a Marker) in base contact with it. Non-specialist troops cannot Control the Evacuation Console, but can prevent the enemy from Controlling it by being in base contact with it. Unconscious, Dead or Sepsitorized troops cannot do either.

Lupe Balboa and Marine Engineering Officer

There is only 1 Marine Engineering Officer and she is placed in one of the four corners of the Objective Room. Before starting the game, players number the corners from 1 to 4 and Roll on the Marine Engineering Officer Chart to know where they must place the model. MARINE ENGINEERING OFFICER 1D20

EVACUATION ELEVATORS

There are eight Evacuation Elevators placed in two sets of four (in base contact with each other) on each side table edge, two of them on either side of the center line of the table (see the map below). These are represented by Elevator Markers, or a scenery piece with the same diameter (such as the Elevator Doors by Micro Art Studio or the Elevators by Bandua Wargames). By spending 1 Short Skill of an Order, a model that is eligible to be evacuated and is inside an Evacuation Elevator can activate it, leaving the game table at the end of that Order. Models cannot enter an Evacuation Elevator as long as it is occupied by another model. Evacuation Elevators do not provide Cover.

Marine Engineering Officer, Thrasymedes and Human Console from Micro Art Studio

Dire Foes Mission Dossier. Copyright Corvus Belli S.L.L. www.infinitythegame.com

To Initialize the Evacuation System, at least one of the players must have activated the Generator and both players must activate the Evacuation Console.

At the end of each Player Turn, the Evacuation Elevators automatically eject any non-evacuated troops inside them. In such a case, the model is placed outside the Evacuation Elevator, in base contact with it. In the same way, troops in an Unconscious or Immobilized state will be placed, in base contact with the Evacuation Elevator they were inside of at the end of the Order in which they passed to that state.

AUTHORIZED SPECIALISTS

Each player must designate one Specialist Troop as an Authorized Specialist. This information is public and must be disclosed when the Authorized Specialist is first deployed. END OF THE MISSION

EVACUATING TROOPS

Antipodes, Hungries, Pupniks and models with the Special Skill G: Remote Presence are not eligible to be evacuated. Only models and not Markers can be evacuated. Markers are revealed automatically when they activate an Evacuation Elevator. Troops evacuated by the Evacuation Elevators do not provide their Order to the Order Reserve in subsequent turns, but they are not counted as casualties for Retreat! purposes. If a Lieutenant leaves the game table via the Evacuation Elevators, then that model’s army will enter a Loss of Lieutenant state.

This scenario has a limited time frame: it will automatically end at the end of the third game turn. If one of the players starts his active turn in a state of Retreat!, the game will end at the end of that player’s turn. Unless, by the end of the first Game Turn, both players have Activated the Evacuation Console, the game will end automatically with the defeat of both players. If either player hurts the Marine Engineering Officer (leaving her in an Unconscious or Dead state), then that player will automatically lose the scenario and any Objective Points achieved in it. NARRATIVE MODE

SPECIALIST TROOPS

This scenario can be played in Narrative Mode, reflecting some events of the current history of the Infinity universe.

Hackers, Doctors and Engineers cannot make use of Repeaters or G: Servant models to perform tasks reserved to Specialist Troops.

In Narrative Mode, Side A will always be a Nomad generic army or an army from the Jurisdictional Command of Corregidor. Meanwhile, Side B will always be an ALEPH generic army or an army from the Steel Phalanx.

Remember: Troops with the Specialist Troop Special Skill can accomplish the different functions Specialist Troops have in this scenario.

In Narrative Mode, Vortex Lupe Balboa and Sergeant Chandra Thrasymedes must be the designated Authorized Specialists of their players.

A Specialist Troop who has been affected by E/M Special Ammunition and has his weapons and equipment Disabled can still accomplish the Objectives of this scenario.

Lupe Balboa and Thrasymedes do not need to make the WIP Roll to Activate the Generator Console or to Activate the Evacuation Console.

Dire Foes Mission Dossier. Copyright Corvus Belli S.L.L. www.infinitythegame.com

For the purposes of this scenario, only Hackers, Doctors, Engineers, Forward Observers and troops possessing the Chain of Command Special Skill are considered Specialist Troops.
