Difference Between ELCB and RCCB...

Description

Difference between ELCB and RCCB ELCB is the old name and often refers to voltage operated devices that are no longer available and it is advised you replace them if you find one. RCCB or RCD is the new name that specifies current operated (hence the new name to distinguish from voltage operated). The new RCCB is best because it will detect any earth fault. The voltage type only detects earth faults that flow back through the main earth wire so this is why they stopped being used. The easy way to tell an old voltage operated trip is to look for the main earth wire connected through it. RCCB will only have the line and neutral connections. ELCB is working based on Earth leakage current. But RCCB is not having sensing or connectivity of Earth, because fundamentally Phase current is equal to the neutral current in single phase. That’s why RCCB can trip when the both currents are deferent and it withstand up to both the currents are same. Both the neutral and phase currents are different that means current is flowing through the Earth. Finally both are working for same, but the thing is connectivity is difference. RCD does not necessarily require an earth connection itself (it monitors only the live and neutral). In addition it detects current flows to earth even in equipment without an earth of its own. This means that an RCD will continue to give shock protection in equipment that has a faulty earth. It is these properties that have made the RCD more popular than its rivals. For example, earth-leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) were widely used about ten years ago. These devices measured the voltage on the earth conductor; if this voltage was not zero this indicated a current leakage to earth. The problem is that ELCBs need a sound earth connection, as does the equipment it protects. As a result, the use of ELCBs is no longer recommended.

elcb means earth leakage circuit breaker which operates when there is a leakage of current from phase to earth. Rccb means residual current circuit breaker which operates when there is a difference in current between any two phases. This differential current is called resdual current.

ELCB is a voltage operated device.RCCB is a current operated device.IN ELCB, Trip coil is connected between system ground and non current carrying part of the machines.RCCB having CBCT(Core Balanced Current Transformer).CBCT consists of 2nos of primary winding (P1,P2) and one secondary winding(S1).Primary windings are in series with the load and secondary winding connected to Trip coil.In case of healty time, voltage in both the primary windings will be cancelled and hence no voltage on secondary winding.During the leakge or If any body touch

the live wires of the machines, current will passing through the body and connected to ground. It will cause the voltage difference in primary windings and induced voltage in secondary operates the trip coil(operating time 50ms). Answe r #3

ELCB:-An ELCB is a specialised type of latching relay that has a building's incoming mains power connected through its switching contacts so that the ELCB disconnects the power in an earth leakage (unsafe) condition. The ELCB detects fault currents passing from live (hot) to the earth (ground) wire within the installation it protects. If sufficient voltage appears across the ELCB's sense coil, it will switch off the power, and remain off until manually reset. An ELCB however, does not sense fault currents passing from live to any other earthed body. RCCB:-A residual current device (RCD), or residual current circuit breaker (RCCB), is an electrical wiring device that disconnects a circuit whenever it detects that the electric current is not balanced between the phase ("hot") conductor and the neutral conductor. Such an imbalance is sometimes caused by current leakage through the body of a person who is grounded and accidentally touching the energized part of the circuit. A lethal shock can result from these conditions; RCDs are designed to disconnect quickly enough to mitigate the harm caused by such shocks.

1) An RCCB will disconnect if there is sufficient fault current flowing from any part of the protected circuit to any other path. An ELCB will only disconnect if there is sufficient fault current flowing from a live part of the circuit to the protective earth conductor. 2)

ELCBs are old hat. 3) RCCBs are cool for compliancy purposes ELCBs are not. 4) RCCBs are pretty good at protecting people against electric shock. ELCBs are pretty crap. 5) An RCCB disconnects a circuit when there is a difference between the current in the phase side of a circuit and the return side of that circuit and when this difference is filtered and exceeds a threshold trip current value(In this context ‘return’ for most purposes is the neutral conductor but for some installations could also conceivably be another phase connection).ELCBs work by detecting current (or valtage induced by current) in the protective earth conductor. 6) It is difficult to see why anyone would choose to use an ELCB over an RCCB given that an ELCB will only prevent the protective earth conductor from reaching a dangerous voltage under fault conditions. RCCBs will also do this and more. Answe r #7

rccb:-it measures the difference in current between live and neautral conductors of a system.in normal conditions it is equal. If it is diff. than it indicates that some current is flowing other than live and neutral Elcb;-it measures the voltage on earth conductor. If this voltage is not zero that indiacate a leakage to earth

ELCB:ELCB IS AN EARTH LEAKAGE CIRCUIT BREAKER WHICH CHEAK THE LEAKAGE OF CURRENT TO THE EARTH AND TRY TO BREAK THE CIRCUIT POWER. RCCB:RCCB IS AN RECIDUAL CURRENT CIRCUIT BREAKER WHICH CHEACK THE ELECTRICAL CURRENT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TWO PHASES IT WILL BREAK THE CICUIT POWER

Rccb means residual current circuit breaker which operates when there is a difference in current between any two phases. This differential current is called resdual current. There are 2 types of ELCB ; voltage operated and current operated. Current operated ELCB is RCCB or sometimes people call RCD. Voltage operated ELCB have earth wire connect to ELCB. It is for the ELCB to measure the leakage voltage and will trip if the leakage voltage reach to dangerous value. While RCCB (Current operated ELCB) monitor the different in current between Neutral and Live(or phases). The differential current is called residual current. RCCB will trip if residual current reach at certain value depends on rated RCCB sensitivity.
