Design Proposal for Professional Review of IESL
Preparation this Design Proposal is for the requirement of professional review of Institution of Engineers of Sri Lanka under Mechanical Engineering discipline. Design proposal has included mainly the scope of the design and the expected outcomes of the design process. This complete design process will be done under the supervision and guidance of senior mechanical charted engineer. As the design for this professional review, it is expected to submit calculation report and set of detailed design drawings of a spillway radial gate. For the selection of such design for this significant professional review of my career subjected to present experiences related to irrigation sector. Presently attached organization, Aryans Engineering Private Limited, involves with hydro power, irrigation and water management, electro- mechanical engineering designs and consultancy and engineering services management areas. My responsibility is design, manufacturing and installation of mechanical structures related to hydro power and irrigation sector. After the graduation in end of year 2007 whole working experience is based on mechanical engineering designs and installations and involved with radial gate designs, installations and maintenance procedures preparing in some assignments. During the process of completion of the design it is expected follow engineering design standards for the calculations and material selections and will be included knowledge of computer aided design programs for drawing preparation.

Radial gate is a hinged gate, with the leaf (or skin) in the form of a circular arc with the centre of curvature at the hinge (trunnion). Spillway radial gates are effectively applied for use on spillways of various projects due to favourable operating and discharge characteristics. Gates are used on flood control projects, navigation projects, hydropower projects, and multipurpose projects (flood control with hydropower). These differences may influence selection of the lifting hoist system, and selection of a corrosion protection system.
Supplying a spillway radial gate in a particular project can be separated into several components as follows. 1. Gate frame (Cylindrical shape of skinplate, transverse beams and stiffners, gate arms ) 2. Gate trunnions 3. Guide wheels and axles 4. Gate trunion supports and embedded parts including sill, lateral embedded parts and guides for side wheels 5. Gate lifting arrangement 6. Gate operation control panel 7. Gate maintenance accessories (maintenance platforms, staircases, ladders)

From this design process it is expected to produce complete calculation report, material selection and detailed drawing set for Gate frame and Gate trunnions as mentioned above. As the complexity of such mechanical structure, design procedures are focused only for 1 and 2 components only. Design of gate frame and gate trunnion will be done by following engineering design standards and for the drawing preparation it is expected to use SOLIDWORKS computer aided design software.

For the design it is selected spillway radial gate which is included in Kalu Ganga Development Project. The Kalu Ganga Development Project in the Central Province of Sri Lanka is a multipurpose water resources development scheme. The primary purpose of the project will be to increase existing water supplies to about 85,500 ha of droughty irrigation areas in the northern and central parts of Sri Lanka. Selected spillway gate is located in Kalu Ganga reservoir and consisted with 03 no. of gates. Dam height of the reservoir is 67m and storage is 226 Mm 3.
