DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF PRESS TOOL MACHINE SYNOPSIS Press tools are commonly used in hydraulic and mechanical presses to produce components at a high productivity rate. Generally press tools are categorized by the types of operation performed using the tool, such as blanking, piercing, bending, forming, forging, trimming etc. The press tool will also be speciopified as blanking tool, piercing tool, bending tool etc
INTRODUCTION In 1911, the inventor Gardner T. Eames of Kalamazoo, Michigan filed for a patent on a new type of arbor press, but was unable to secure funding for production. Eames partnered with Herbert H. Everard to create the G.T. Eames Company, under the agreement that the rights to the patent were to be shared between both men. The company started producing the press under the "Eames Presses" brand with some success. In 1913, Everard died, leaving his controlling share of the firm to his daughter and her husband, John Penniman. Eames eventually became disillusioned with the Penniman's handling of the company and sold his shares to them for $5,000. Penniman subsequently moved the company to another location in Kalamazoo, renaming it to Atlas Press Company. Eames opened a machine shop and continued to build and sell presses under the old trademark, which eventually led to conflict between the two parties, both of whom claimed exclusivity over the patent, as well as additional improvements made by Eames. Historically, metal was shaped by hand using a hammer. Later, larger hammers were constructed to press more metal at once, or to press thicker materials. Often a smith
would employ a helper or apprentice to swing the sledgehammer while the smith concentrated on positioning the work piece. Adding windmill or steam power yielded still larger hammers such as steam hammers. Most modern machine presses use a combination of electric motors and hydraulics to achieve the necessary pressure. Along with the evolution of presses came the evolution of the dies used within them.
WORKING PRINCIPLE A mechanism is a device designed to transform input forces and movement into a desired set of output forces and movement. Mechanisms generally consist of moving components such as gears and gear trains, belt and chain drives, cam crank shaft and follower mechanisms, and linkages as well as friction devices such as brakes and clutches, and structural components such as the frame, fasteners, bearings, springs, lubricants and seals, as well as a variety of specialized machine elements such as splines, pins and keys. A tool press mechaine is a device for evenly punching the press tool onto a press medium (substrate) such as tool and metal. The device applies pressure to a press medium that rests on an inked surface made of crank shaft mechanism connected through the connecting rod mechanism, thereby transferring the link and gear mechanism. Typically used for metal, the invention and spread of the tool press are widely regarded as among the most influential events in the second millennium revolutionizing the way people conceive and describe the world they live in.
Procedure for press tool working in a knuckle joint. Press tool In this project the following components are used:-
1) Base plate, 2) Spur gear, 3) Connecting rod, 4) Crankshaft, 5) Punch, 6) Knuckle joint. The base plate is mounted and with the help of motor the spur gear is rotating in clock wise direction. And the crank shaft is fixed with spur gear for drive the connecting plate one end of connection plate is fix with crank shaft and another end of connection plate is fix with knuckle joint Assy. Now the function is from the spur gear rotation it’s transferred to crank shaft through the connection plate then drive goes to the knuckle joint assy, with the help of knuckle joint assy the punch is moving up and down motion.
ADVANTAGES: • Movement of piston is free because lubrication is done during every stroke in connecting rod link. • Easy maintenance. • Less skilled operator is sufficient. • Noise of operation is reduced. • It’s used to stamping process toll press mechanism
DISADVANTAGES: 1. Initial cost is high 2. Piston stroke length is constant
APPLICATION 1. it’s used for tool and die forming machine 2. Tool manufacturing industries 3. Material cut or shape material press used
