Description
A Semi- Detailed Lesson Plan in General Biology 1 Prepared by: Jefferson S. Valdez Content Content Standard
Cell The learners demonstrate an understanding of cell structures and functions. The learner shall be able to construct a 3D model of plant/animal/bacterial cell using recyclable materials The learners describe the structure and function of major and subcellular organelles STEM_BIO11/12-Ia-c-2
Performance Standard Learning Competencies Code I. Objectives:
At the end of the 60-minute discussion, the students should be able to: 1. describe the structure and function of different organelles in animal and plant cells. 2. construct a 3D model of a plant and animal cell using edible materials. 3. appreciate the value of creativity, patience and teamwork in doing a task. II. Subject Matter: A. Topic: B. Reference:
Anatomy of The Cell Biology: Today and Tomorrow For Non-Science Majors by Starr, Evers and Star, pages 49-55
C. Materials: LCD Projector & Screen Whiteboard and marker Chalk Supplies for Cell Model 1. Various fruits and candies used to represent the parts of the cell: raisins, gummy worms (plain and sour), gumdrops, gum ball, jelly beans, grapes, mandarin orange sections, sprinkles, M&M's, jaw breakers, a small stone fruit (like a plum), dried fruit, and/or hard candy. 2. Bread D. Values: Creativity, Patience, Teamwork III. Procedure 1. Routinary Activities 1. 2. 3. 4.
Greetings Prayer Checking of Attendance Bio-Bits (Trivia of the Day)
2. Motivation The class will be divided into five groups. Scrambled letters will be flashed on the screen and the students should guess what the word is. Answers shall be written on the illustration boards given. The group with the highest point wins. Scrambled Word ROCK SENULUC SMAAITHT DEELISCHN TERORB EKOHO DOORTEHE NHAWCNS LELC RETHOY FODLUR WIVOCRH
3. Lesson Proper
Answer CORK NUCLEUS MATTHIAS SCHLEIDEN ROBERT HOOKE THEODORE SCHWANN CELL THEORY RUDOLF VIRCHOW
Using a PowerPoint presentation, the teacher will present the topic using active learning and/or collaborative learning. 4. Generalization The cell is considered the basic unit of life. Organelles are small structures within cells that have specific jobs that include ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, vacuoles, lysosomes, mitochondria, plasma membrane and others. 5. Application 3-D Cell Model Construction The class will be divided into five groups. Using the available materials they have on hand, the students will construct their model within 30 minutes. After the time given, the teacher will choose the best model. IV. Evaluation The group will going to present their output using the teacher-made rubric. (see attached rubric) V. Assignment Draw and label the parts of an animal and plant cell.

3D CELL MODEL RUBRICS (SCORE SHEET) Cell Type: ________ Grade: ________ out of 30 Rubric points x 100 = __________ % Model Criteria Creativity & Design
Excellent (5) Model is 3-D. Uses different edible materials for each organelle. Cell proper shape. Imaginative. Name, period, cell type present. All organelles labeled neatly and legible on model.
Great (4) Model is 3-D. Uses different edible materials for each organelle. Cell proper shape. Missing one element: name, period, cell type, organelle label Legible and neat
Good (3) Model is 3-D. Uses different edible materials for each organelle. Cell not proper shape. Missing two elements: name, period, cell type, organelle labels Neatly labeled.
Organelles
All required organelles shown. Proper size, shape and placement in the cell.
Missing, misplacement, improper size or shape of one organelle in cell. Including an extra organelle.
Missing two organelles from cell. Most organelles proper shape, size and placement.
Key Criteria Functions
Excellent (5) All organelle functions are correct for cell model. Neat and legible. All organelles are correctly labeled. Sample organelle on key. Match model. Excellent (5) Discusses all cell parts and functions. Explains what was used for each organelle.
Great (4) One organelle function missing or incorrect. Extra organelle function added All organelles are correctly labeled. Pictures drawn to represent organelles.
Good (3) Missing two organelle functions. Neatly written.
Fair (2) Missing three organelle functions. Not neatly written.
Most organelles are correctly labeled and match model.
Most organelles are NOT correctly labeled and do NOT match model.
Great (4) Does not explain one organelle or its function.
Good (3) Does not explain two organelles or their functions.
Fair (2) Does not explain three organelles or their functions

Presentation Part & Function
Total Points
Fair (2) Model is 3-D. Organelles are all made out of the same edible material.
Poor (1) Model is not 3D. No edible material is used.
Missing more than two elements: name, period, cell type, organelle labels. Not neat. Missing three or more organelles. Most organelles proper shape, size and placement.
Organelles not labeled on model. Difficult to read and understand. Missing three or more organelles. Most organelles not proper shape, size or placement in the cell. Poor (1) Missing four or more organelle functions. Key is difficult to read. Organelles are not labeled on key.
Poor (1) Does not explain four or more organelles or their functions. Does not present project.
