From The Director

Alan Kirk Gray Library Director

This report shows why Darien Library is one of the most successful libraries in the nation. It is a leader in providing innovative services, a broad and deep collection of books, DVDs, magazines, technology, programs and research databases, all housed in a welcoming building, staffed by a warm, friendly and amazingly helpful staff of extraordinary librarians. The support we receive from you is fundamental to all this. The Town of Darien provides for the building and its operation, and for staff members and benefits. But your donations to the Annual Fund provide our collection, our programs, our online resources, and our technology — everything, apart from staff, that makes this library something special. It is because of you that we can serve the community so well. I’ve asked the Department Heads to summarize last year’s activities on the following pages and I think you will be able to see why — with the range and complexity of all that they and their fellow librarians do – your support is so valuable. Thank you for being a Friend of Darien Library.

Departmental Updates Stephanie Anderson Public Services

Over the past year, our public services departments have been asking themselves one question: What next? As our community changes, and the world around us changes even faster, everyone in the Library is determined to have answers at the ready, in many forms. Whether it’s through a program, a book, a movie, a class, or working individually with one of our librarians, we’ve been striving to anticipate and meet the many needs of Darien. From help with online dating, to a newly-enhanced paperback collection, to family Maker Day, to help with genealogy, our librarians have spent the year experimenting and developing new ideas, without ever forgetting our ongoing commitment to great hospitality and stellar service. Read on to learn more.

Reader Services This year at the Welcome Desk, our readers’ advisors not only saw an increase in the number of overall questions, they also answered far more people who wanted help picking out the right book for them. 3,584 people came to us this year and asked for book advice! This year, we also started keeping track of how many patrons reach out to us to share their opinion on a book, as we love hearing from patrons and always want that number to grow. This year, we got 540 patron recommendations. Reader Services has been working hard to serve as many readers as possible, and reach out to new readers, while maintaining the close relationships with patrons that make our book suggestions valuable. We also undertook a number of initiatives to further promote our readers’ advisory service and to reach new patrons. We hosted our first annual RA Festival, an outdoor carnival to promote reading and connect readers with staff favorites, a popular detective mystery showcase, and a visit from the Audiobookmobile as it travelled the East Coast. Our Senior Outreach team made three visits almost every month to bring Library programs to patrons who can’t make it to the Library. In addition to programs and outreach, readers’ advisors also regularly promote staff picks as well as making a wide range of displays to showcase the breadth of our collection over the course of the year. Our book groups team was even busier than usual this year, servicing our 130 registered book groups by making recommendations for great discussion topics, as well as circulating 4,493 books to them. They also led a number of programs, including a popular Spring Book Buzz that showcased popular books coming out through 2015 as well as an author luncheon. Top 5 Adult Books: 1. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr 2. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins 3. The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown 4. I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

Departmental Updates Jen Dayton Collection Development

Collection Development This year, our patrons borrowed 181,677 adult books, 104,203 DVDs, and 16,207 eBooks/eAudiobooks. In particular, patrons embraced our new streaming service hoopla, downloading 2,049 movies and a total of 5,395 movies, music albums, TV episodes, and audiobooks. This year saw some surprises in Collection Development, which led us to develop several new collections to meet new patron needs. To coincide with our outreach at Weed Beach last summer, we ordered the top five bestselling trade paperbacks from the indie bookstore bestseller list. To our surprise, these titles, some of which performed in an underwhelming fashion as hardcover, took off in paperback, and continued to perform very well for us into the fall. We repeated our beach bag purchasing again this summer, and were again surprised at the continued appeal that some of these older titles had. To keep meeting this need as we head into the fall, we have added even more books to this collection, are re-naming it the Commuter Collection, and are giving it a place of prominence on Main Street. We also added more foreign language materials for adults to our shelves. To start, this new collection is primarily Spanish magazines and books, which were purchased for the caregivers who we see every day in the library. We grouped this new collection with Spanishlanguage audiobooks. This has proved to be very popular, as have some foreign-language items in our digital Hoopla collection, and we are looking to expand this into a more global collection over the next year, as well as to incorporate some of our foreign language DVDs and make sure patrons connect with our global children’s collection.

Mallory Arents Adult Programming

Adult Programming Donations to the Library supported 552 programs for adults last year, and provided a little something for everyone. The most popular programs were two concerts from local musicians. Acabella serenaded us during our Annual Holiday Concert to a standing room only crowd. Later in the year, Gunsmoke provided an audio and visual journey to the Grand Ole Opry. A new service offered by the Library this year was monthly Passport Days. After receiving expedited service without paying for the extra cost, 1,041 patrons are now filling up their suitcase for international adventure! Passports weren’t the only documents Darien Library helped with. 255 patrons filed their taxes at the Library, and 121 had a one-on-one consultation regarding their resume. We worked in coordination with the Reference staff to offer a popular series of dropin resume workshops October – March. In addition to proofreading resumes and cover letters, librarians also directed jobseekers to an excellent selection of online resources to assist them with interview preparation and vocational guidance. Whether community members were looking to learn how to build an app or for some help with love, Darien Library had them covered. Technology classes included coding in Python, how to sell items on eBay, keeping a paperless office, and even an introduction to online dating. 840 people enjoyed a technology class at the Library in this past year. There are few places in this world where you can enjoy live music, apply for your passport, or learn how to code under one roof. Engaged, enlightened, and entertained all in one space!

Sally Ijams Knowledge & Learning Services

Claire Moore Children’s Library

Knowledge & Learning Services

Children & Teen Services

Reference services, the cornerstone of the Knowledge and Learning Services department, fielded over 7,000 in-depth questions this year, covering a broad variety of topics. Our goals this year included increasing the visibility and usability of our print and digital collections, offering resources and programs that reflect community interests, as well as promoting the services available in the Business Center.

The Children’s Library continued their commitment to providing programming that focuses on S.T.E.A.M. education, highlighting the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. The most attended program for kids this year was October’s Maker Day, with 950 people in attendance. This family event included the Global Cardboard Challenge and other collaborative S.T.E.A.M. activities for all ages. This summer, the librarians also delved into new territory by hosting a full-day S.T.E.A.M. Camp for tween students, with workshops facilitated by Stepping Stones, the Museum of Modern Art, the Discovery Museum, and the New Children’s Museum of Hartford.

Travel, career research, cooking, interior design, and biographies continue to be among the most popular areas in our non-fiction book collection. The number of genealogy questions asked at the Reference Desk has been on the rise in the past year, due in large part to our designation as a FamilySearch Center, bringing in new patrons to look at genealogical documents on microfilm. Ancestry.com once again proved to be our most heavily used database, fielding 21,600 individual searches this year. Notary services continue to be in high demand, increasing 28% over last year. The seven notaries on staff processed 1,529 documents during the course of the year, helping people with wills, home closings, and travel documents, to name but a few. Technology Help Desk staff fielded over 13,500 questions in person during the course of the year, assisting individuals with computers, software, and digital resources.

Promoting literacy is also part of the Children’s Library’s vision, and the launch of the 100 Before One program this past year encourages new parents to begin their child’s early literacy development by reading 100 books before their first birthday. This fiscal year, kids read a total of 233,432 children’s books, which included the most circulated titles: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney and Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique by Jane O’Connor. As digital book circulation continues to rise, the Children’s Library and Teen Room have collaborated in offering the new Digital e-Reading Room for easy and age-appropriate browsing. There is still a huge demand for Teen literature, and this year alone 3,862 Young Adult books circulated on Main Street. Over 1,500 teens attended library events, including the weekly For the Makers sessions and the Python coding class, which was hosted by a Darien High School student.

Departmental Updates Lois Calka Materials Management

Facilities & Materials Management This year has included many facility improvements and projects to keep the “new” Library looking and feeling new. A complete conversion to LED lighting took place over a number of months and provides crisper, more reliable light without the need to frequently change bulbs and ballasts. It is also expected to significantly reduce our energy costs and aligns with the environmentally responsible model of the building. The first bi-polar ionic air purification system in a public building in New England was installed here in September. It removes harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) as well as particulate matter, odors, and germs from the air. A glass enclosure was constructed around the interior return conveyor, which helps to reduce the noise of the conveyor within the building. The roof had work done to repair broken and missing slates and to fix some gutter problems. Workplace safety was a significant theme this year. The Darien Police Department provided us with a building security assessment and followed up with presentations to all Library staff on workplace safety and security. In-house staff training was also updated, with a new Building and Public Services Manual which was presented in workshops to all staff. Twenty-four staff members were certified in CPR and use of the Automated External Defibrillator. On the public side, our meeting room use by community groups was up 33% over the previous year, which provided the Library with a 37% increase in room rental income.

14

The Materials Management Department ordered and received 24,049 new items this year, including books, DVDs, books on CD, and magazines. Maximum efficiency is required to get each item properly ordered, cataloged, and on the shelf in a timely manner. We increased our efficiency this year by becoming full cataloging partners with our DVD vendor, Midwest Tape. This means that we now receive our DVDs fully processed and cataloged, so that they can get to the shelves more quickly. Inter-library loans were up this year by 10%. We borrowed 737 books from other libraries for our patrons, and we loaned out 1477 books to other libraries around the country for their patrons. The shelvers in Matman reshelved 457,871 returned items this year with amazing accuracy and efficiency. They also pulled 21,348 items from the shelves to fulfill online requests from Darien Library patrons, which represents a 10% increase from last year. Most Popular Children’s Items: •

Family Film - E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Kids Fiction - Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney

Picture Book - Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique by Jane O’Connor

Non-fiction – Minecraft: Essential Handbook by Stephanie Milton

John Blyberg Technology & User Experience

We also completed a renovation of our Business Center in the lower level. The renewed space was designed to be brighter, friendlier, and optimized to improve workflow and our ability to provide customer service. We also incorporated large format scanning and 3D printing resources into our a-la-carte service model. Finally, we capped off our fiscal year with two publicity awards from the Connecticut Library Association. One award was for our digital signage and the other was for a website we launched last year that supports our Fairfield County Minecraft Server initiative, fcminecraft. org.

Technology & User Experience The past year has seen a number of technology improvements and enhancements at Darien Library. In addition to network and server upgrades, we switched to a new phone system that saves us money and allows us to be more nimble in the way we work and respond to our users.

We are looking forward to another exciting year full of new connections!

In the spring, we completed our move to thin clients throughout the organization for both public and staff. These new desktops are more reliable, easier to maintain, and are one hundred times more energy efficient than traditional desktop PCs. In January, we gave Main Street a facelift by installing five new LED panels, replacing the aging plasma digital signage displays. This past spring we also launched a new website, Darienlibrary.tv. The website connects viewers with Darien Library’s rich video archive. Darienlibrary.tv offers a clean, modern design, easy-to-navigate functionality, and a content-rich site experience. It has been designed to take advantage of new web standards such a ‘responsive design’ so that content can be viewed easily on computers, laptops and mobile devices. Concurrently with the the debut of darienlibrary.tv, we launched of a new online web series entitled The Library. The series, filmed and edited by retired advertising director, Manny Perez, follows day-to-day life at Darien Library. There is much more than meets the eye when you walk into the Library, and the series will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run an award-winning library system.
