Mao Yuan-Yi  states that:

máo zǐ yuē In the “Collection of the Most

Important Military Techniques” (Wu Jing Zong

wǔ jīng zǒng yào suǒ zǎi dāo fán bā zhǒng

Yao), there are 8 types of

saber being documented. Those that differs little (from the 8 types) were not ér xiǎo yì zhě yóu bú liè yān

documented. The techniques (of the 8 Saber types) were not transmitted.

qí xí fǎ jiē bù chuán

Those that are still in practice now is the  jīn suǒ xí wéi cháng dāo yāo dāo

Long-Saber (chang-dao) and Waist-Saber (yao-dao). The Waist-Saber must be used together with the Shield.

yāo dāo fēi tuán pái bú yòng

Therefore, (the Waist-Saber) is documented together with gù zài yú pái zhōng

the Shield. The Long-Saber is practiced by the Japanese.

cháng dāo zé wō nú suǒ xí

During the reign of Sejong (4

th

King of the Korean Chosun Dynasty), the Japanese

shì zōng shí jìn fàn dōng nán

invaded the South-East. And therefore, the Japanese techniques were obtained.

gù shǐ dé zhī 

General Qi Ji-Guang qī shǎo bǎo

Obtained the techniques during the battle in the year of yú xīn yǒu zhèn shàng dé qí xí  Xing-You. fǎ And thus practiced and documented in the latter

yòu cóng ér yǎn zhī bìng zài yú hòu

When these techniques weren’t transmitted

cǐ fǎ wèi chuán shí

The Saber that’s being used were constructed similarly.

suǒ yòng dāo zhì lüè tóng

However, those that are short and heavy are useless and dàn duǎn ér zhòng kě fèi yě

should be discarded.
