DANCE SPACES STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS The study of each classical dance form and its music in context with spatial quality and visual backdrop. Interrelationship of dance, space and architecture BACKGROUND ANALYSIS AND INFORMATION: India being very rich in its culture and has various classical and folk dance forms and music. Over the course of time, these dance forms practiced in the different parts of the country were codified and developed distinct identities according to the geographic, socio-economic, and political conditions of each region. The various types of Indian classical dances are Bharatanatyam, Kathak, kathakali, kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Odissi, Sattriya and Gaudi Nritya where some of them are accompanied by classical music known as Carnatic music. These dance forms were practiced as offerings or prayers to god and goddess, a way of storytelling and also as entertainment for the kings or the rich. Hence Indian classical dances were performed in palaces, natya mandir, temples, court rooms and city squares. The dance forms and architecture of these places evolved simultaneously, are interrelated and form an indigenous element to depict and exhibit the grandeur of the performance and feel of our culture. But unfortunately, Indian classical dances have lost that backdrop of their performances as they are now performed on modern day stages which are designed for the west. So no longer is the relevance, complexity and essence of these dance forms evident to the spectators. Hence Indian culture is deteriorating and losing its roots as today’s generation cannot relate to the culture. This has led to the change even in the authentic classical dance forms and the spaces of its performance. To revive these forms of art, the soul of the classical dance, music and its spaces is to be analyzed to ensure that they are practiced in the right form to restore the traditions. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To study, decipher and bring back the relationship between dance and its spaces ensuring that every art form is felt in its absolute sense. To create the same scenario in order to revive the lost essence of classical music and dance forms.

Depict the purpose of the typical form of architecture for these dance forms. The study of each classical dance form and its music would be classified as: Spatial quality Settings of the visual backdrop Anthropometry Volume of audience Vocal and Acoustics Materials for their platform

DESIGN INTENT: Design spaces reflecting a specific dance form and create a platform for showcasing Indian culture in appropriate backdrop. So that it develops into a centre for performing arts. The study of every dance form and its space will form the basis of the design ensuring the context remains the same. The intent of the design is to depict the interrelation of dance and architecture where space integrates both. In order to broaden the horizon of classical dance and music a Guild and school could be designed where people could learn, practice and perform these art forms to keep the culture prevailing even today. Intermediate spaces will form as exhibition spaces for spreading the right knowledge about these art forms to the visitors of the performing arts centre. To create and design spaces to the level of its origin to feel

dance and music in its actual context. Giving the spatial life to the dance form and formation in an around the dance spaces the cultural background for exhibitions of that culture. METHODOLOGY: Research Study the evolution, postures and the anthropometry of the places of performances for realizing the spatial quality of each form. Study the effects of the change in visual, audio and physical settings. Study the interrelationship of dance, space and architecture. Data collection Case studies: Auroville Shantiniketan
