Power bills rise

‘QUOTE OF THE DAY..’

Cheers actress Kirstie Alley will raise a glass to being 60 today.

POWER giant E.on last night announced a major rise in gas and electric prices for over four million customers. The firm will push up electricity bills by 9% and gas by 3% from next month, adding around £60 a year to bills for dual fuel customers on standard tariffs. E.on’s Graham Bartlett said: “It’s been over two years since we last increased our prices.” But Richard Hall, energy expert at Consumer Focus, said: “Consumers simply don’t trust that suppliers are asking them to pay a fair price for their energy.”

“I regret bitterly what I did.” Jailed student Edward Woollard

A BID to save RAF Lossiemouth got a boost as a 31,000-name petition was delivered to Downing Street yesterday. It is feared that the base in north-east Scotland could lose its fleet of fast-jet Tornadoes to a site in England after the Government’s recent strategic defence review.

NEARLY 15,000 police jobs will go because of cash cuts, Shadow Home Secretary Ed Balls warned yesterday. He said 14,482 posts, including 6,257 police officers, are earmarked for the chop. Mr Balls said: “This research shows the huge impact that the Conservative-led Government’s huge 20% cuts to policing are already making. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The vast majority of police forces have not yet announced how many jobs will go.” His warning came as he presented his findings to MPs on the Home Affairs Select Committee.
