Marg.
-
Oh, Tom! This magazine is really interesting! And t he pictures are so artistic!
Tom
-
What kind of pictures are they? Of cars? Of f ilm stars?
Marg.
-
No, dear. This is a fashion magazine. There are onl y pictures of beautiful fashions. I love French fashi ons!
Tom
-
Is it a French magazine?
Marg.
-
Of course, dear. I buy only French fashion magazines.
Tom
-
But can you read French easily?
Marg.
-
Of course I can. I could read and speak French fluently when I was only fifteen. When I was at school, I wa s always the first of the class in French.
Tom
-
It is strange, but people always forget foreign lan guages when they leave school. I had no problems, of cours e, because I was always the last of the class in French. So, I had nothing to forget. I could never remember the v erbs. And I had a terrible pronunciation. I think that Fr ench is a very difficult language.
Marg.
-
Poor darling. I think that French isn’t difficult a t all. I have an idea! You can read a little French now - and I can correct your pronunciation mistakes.
Tom
-
No, dear. It’s useless. It’s too late.
Marg.
-
No, it isn’t. Remember! The proverb says: “It’s never too late.”
Tom
-
But it’s foolish to work too much on a holiday.
Marg.
-
Oh, that is ridiculous, dear! You do nothing from m orning to night. The only things that interest you are: ea ting, drinking, listening to the jukebox, smoking and sle eping. And as you know, that is very bad for your health, dear. (continúa)

Tom

Oh, no. I’m fine. My health is splendid.
Marg.
-
But you smoke too much, dear. You know that. And yo u drink too much, too.
Tom
-
All right. All right. Give me that French magazine correct my pronunciation. Come on!
Marg.
-
Here you are, darling! … Well … Begin!
Tom
-
This chair is very uncomfortable.
Marg.
-
Then take the other chair. And here is a cushion, d ear. Put it behind your back. - Are you comfortable now?
Tom
-
Uh-huh
Marg.
-
Then now we can begin.
Tom
-
Well … er … I …
Marg.
-
Another cushion behind your back?
Tom
-
No. One cushion is enough.
Marg.
-
Then what, dear?
Tom
-
Well, if I must work, I must have a good beer in fr ont of me.
Marg.
-
Oh Tom! Tom! Tom!

Lydia is a woman with very expensive tastes. The only things that interest her are clothes, beautifu l cars, theatres and cinemas. She eats very little. She says that too much eating is bad for her figure. She is right, of course, but sh e exaggerates. She eats only a salad and a sandwich f or lunch and a little snack of cold meat for dinner. For breakfast she only has a glass of milk and an apple. She sits in a comfortable armchair all day, with two big cushions behind her back. She does nothing from morning to night. She never reads. She never listen s to the radio. She never watches television. She spends her time thinking about clothes, cars, theatres, holidays …and time passes … and she continues to think: “Oh! I would like to be rich! I would like to buy so many things! - dozens dozens of dresses … many pairs of elegant shoes … a big, splendid car with air conditioning … some beautiful real pearls!” When George, her husband, comes home from the office, she never says: “How are you this evening, dear? Are you tired?” She just looks at him with dreamy eyes . I f George says, “My dear, I’m tired and hungry. Where is my dinner?” she answers, “Your dinner is there, on the kitchen table. Use your eyes!” Poor George looks at the table, but he sees only a plate of cold, boiled potatoes and a bottle of wate r. “Only boiled potatoes, my dear?” he says in a sad voice.. “Of course,” says Lydia, “We can’t throw money voice away! The only thing that you think about is eating. You forget that I want to buy a car!”
