1 In a Café

Tom

-  Here is a café, Margaret! We can go inside and sit down.

I’m tired, hungry and thirsty. Marg.

-  Yes, but I prefer to sit outside .

Tom

-  All right, dear.

Waiter! Waiter

-  Señor? … Er … yes, sir?

Tom

-  Bring us two coffees and some cakes, please.

Marg.

-  No, Tom. I want a cup of tea. Tea with milk and sugar.

Tom

-  All right. Please, waiter - one coffee and some cakes …

some tea … and bring some milk, too. Cold milk. Waiter

-  Cold milk? Not hot milk, sir?

Tom

-  Oh, no! Hot tea and cold milk. My fiancée is English. Hot

tea with cold milk is the English style.

Waiter

-  I understand sir. I understand.

Tom

-  Look, Margaret! There is a juke-box inside…there, in that

corner. Would you like some music with your t ea?

Marg.

-  Yes, dear. But some good music, please! ***

Tom

-  Hm … well…most of the songs are American or English.

These are some of the titles: “Love is a Wonderful Thing.” “The Sun is Shining Over Us.” “My Girlfriend is an Angel.” “My Love is a Sailor.” “I Can’t Live Without You.” “Crazy Love.” … Marg.

-  Oh stop, Tom! Those are all stupid songs. I would like to

hear some good music. I want Beethoven or Chopin, or a beautiful opera. Tom

-  But dear, this is a jukebox, not a theatre. There aren’t any

operas here. Now here is a nice record! The song is original, and the singer has a good voice. He sings very well, too. (continúa) Carmelo Mangano – http://www.inglesparaespanoles.com – for private or academic use only.

In a Café

Marg.

-  And what is the name of the song?

Tom

-  “Rock and Roll Under the Moon!”

Marg.

-  Oh, Tom! Your taste in music is horrible!

Tom

-  No, it isn’t. I like modern music. I like jazz. I’m a modern

man. (The waiter brings them coffee, te a, milk and cakes.) Marg.

-  Any sugar in your coffee, Tom?

Tom

-  No, thank you. I like coffee without sugar. You know that I

like bitter things. Marg.

-  And I, on the contrary, like only sweet things.

Hm…This tea is delicious, hot and strong. What about your coffee? Is it good too? Tom

-  Yes, it’s very good.

Marg.

-  Eat some cakes, dear.

Tom

-  One or two cakes are enough for me.

Marg,.

-  Well, one or two cakes aren’t enough for me!

I want six of

these delicious cakes! Tom

-  Not six , Margaret! What about your figure, my dear?

Marg.

-  Maybe you are right, Tom. Well, just five cakes then.

Tom

dear! - Well, now I want to hear my record. -  Oh, my dear!

Marg.

-  All right, Tom.
