Ab o ut th e Manual T h i s B Se Serr ies Tro u bleshooting and Repair Manua   is i n tended to aid in deter mining the cause of engine-related engine-related

probl ems and to provi provide de recommended re pa ir procedur es. The manu al is divided into i nto sections by system. Each

formatio section provides genera  genera   i n for mation , specifi cation s, d i agrams, and service tools, where applicable. The specific repair procedures are referenced i n th e Tr oubeshoo oubeshootting L o g i c Cha Charr ts.

How to U se the M a nua l The m a n u al i s o r ganized t o provi d e a n easy flow from problem identificat on to problem correction. A list of troublesh ootin g sy m ptom s contain i ng the m o s t co mmo n engin e problems is on Page T-2 in the Troubleshooting Sect on. Complete the following s te p s to l o ca catte a n d c o rrect th e problem: ( S TE P

The left co umn o f th e "Troubl e s h o o tin g L ogic Chart" indicates a probable cause, starting at the top with the simplest and e a s i est t o r epair, and continuing downward to the most difficult. The r ight column p r ovides a br e f descr descrii ption of th e corrective action with the reference number for the repair.

G enera l Cleaning Instructions S o l ve nt a n d Acid C l eaning Sever al so l v e n t and a ci d - t y p e c l eaners can be used to c l ean the engine parts. C u mm ns Engine C om p a ny, I n c . does not r ecommen d any specific c l eaners. Always follow the c l eaner manufac acttu r e r ' s i n s t r u c ti ons   E x p e r i e n ce h as s h o wn th a t th e best results can be obtained using a cleaner that can be h e a te d to 90 to 95 degr ees C e l s i us ( 180 t o 200 degrees F ah r enheit]. A cleaning tank that prov des a constant m i xing a n d fi l te r in g o f th e c l eaning so lu t i o n w i ll give t he b e s t results. ~

Remove a ll th e gask e t mat er a l , o-rin gs, and the deposits of sludge, carbon, e tc., w i th a w i re brus h or scrape scraperr before putting t he parts in a cleaning tank. Be careful not to damage any gasket surfaces   When poss ble, steam clean t he parts before p utting them in the cleaning tank   Warnin g : The u s e of a cid c a n b e e x tremely dangerous to personnel, an d c a n d a m a g e the m ac hin hiner ery. Alway s provi de a ta n k o f s tro n g soda water as a neutralizing agent.

If the parts are n o t to be u sed i mmediately after clean i ng, dip them i n a suitable r us t proofing co m pou n d . The r ustproofing c o m p o u n d m u s t be r emoved from t he parts before insta ll a tion on the e n g in e .

S t e a m C l e a n i ng Steam cleanin g ca cann be u sed to r em emo ov e a ll types of dirt that can contam nate the c l eanng ta n k . I t i s a g ood way t o c l e a n the oil drillings.

When th e engine is b e l ow operatin g tempe rature, th e th erm ostat is closed, an d the cool a nt fl ow bypasses the r ad iator and goes to the water pump i n l et th ro u g h inte r n a l dri llings in th e b l ock an d cylinder h ead . When operat ing temperature is reac h ed, th e th e r m ostat o pe n , blockin g th e bypass passage to the water pump a n d opening the outl et to the radiato r . ~

When you t r o u b leshoot overheat ing, remember th at too much oil in the o i l pan can cause additional heat from friction when the r od journals a re submerged in oil.

Overfilling with o i l raises the o i l temperatur e w h ic h transferred to the coolant system at the o i l cooler.
