What is a Pendulum? A pendulum is a simple divining tool that consists of a small object (often referred to as a "weight") suspended from the end of a chain, cord, or thread.
Although pendulums are easy to find in most new age stores and online, there's something special about a pendulum that you make for yourself. When you select certain materials that have personal significance for you and take the time to put them all together, you can create a one-of-a-kind pendulum that's perfect for you and your dowsing needs.
Just remember: If you can imagine it, you can create it!

Choosing Materials for Your Pendulum A handcrafted pendulum should be made out materials that appeal to your senses, mean something to you, and ones that correspond to your dowsing practices.
Why Choose Crystals, Gemstones, & Other Minerals? If you'll primarily be using your pendulum for healing purposes (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, Earth), you may want to use a particular crystal, gemstone, or other mineral as a pendulum weight. Crystal and gemstone pendulums are good for dowsing astrological charts, creating home remedies, eliminating addictive behaviors, and Feng Shui. If your pendulum will be a multi-purpose one, your favorite kind of crystal is an ideal choice.

Why Choose Metal? Metal is suitable as a pendulum weight especially if you will be using it to dowse for Earth's precious resources. Use metal to find locate water, buried treasure, and of course…metal! Some metals can also be very healing, so don't rule it out if you plan on dowsing for healing purposes. Using your pendulum for alchemy, rituals, spell-work, or Earth magic? Again, metal is a great choice.

Why Choose Wood? If you'd like to enhance your connection with nature, totem animals, or faery guides, you may want to choose a weight made out of a certain wood. Wooden pendulums are also excellent for selecting foods and supplements, creating home remedies, dowsing for pets, Feng Shui, and for Earth healing.

Why Choose Jewelry? People often choose pendants or rings to serve as pendulum weights for sentimental reasons. A treasured piece of jewelry that was passed down by a loved one, received as a gift, or one that's simply a favorite makes for a one-of-a-kind pendulum weight that's about as personal as you can get! It's especially suitable if you will be using it to dowse exclusively for yourself.
Why Choose Found Objects/Keepsakes? A "found object" or keepsake could be something you have lying around the house, a little treasure that you find at a flea market, garage sale, or antique store, or any little trinket such as a coin, key, charm, or bead. Use a found object or keepsake if it holds significance for you to really personalize your pendulum. Like jewelry, it's a good choice if you'll primarily be dowsing for yourself.

Tips for Selecting a Pendulum Weight
• Choose a shape that swings well (cone, inverted pyramid, bullet, sphere, teardrop).
• Select one that appeals to all of your senses. • Your weight should hold special meaning for you. • If you have difficulty finding a weight that you really like, consider using a special pendant from your jewelry box.
• Pendulum weights can be found in your home, at flea markets, garage sales, antique stores, new age stops, or online.
• A rock or river stone that you find outside in nature can be the perfect pendulum weight…so keep your eyes open!

Materials Needed for Pendulum Construction
• A pendulum weight of your choice • Desired length of chain, cord, or string, thread, or flexible beading wire • A charm, bead, or other small object for the end of the pendulum that you hold on to (if desired)
• Beads or gemstone chips (if you want a beaded cord) • Jump ring and bale • Wire or headpins (optional) • Craft pliers • Wire cutter
Craft pliers are not the same as the pliers you'd find in the toolbox out in the garage. Craft pliers are smaller and intended for jewelry making and other similar projects. A craft-sized round-nose, chain-nose, and flat pliers along with a wire cutting tool will make it easy to work with wire, jump-rings and other materials that you may be using to construct your pendulum. They can be found at most craft supply stores and discount chains. Copyright © 2013 Kelly Small Email:

Instructions for Pendulum Construction
• Cut the length of chain, cord, thread, or flexible beading wire that you will be using for your pendulum. If you're undecided about length, start longer. You can always shorten it later.
• If you will be attaching a small bead or charm to the end of the pendulum that you hang on to, use pliers to affix a jump-ring to that end of the chain. To do this, gently pinch the jump-ring with either your fingers or craft pliers to keep it steady, and use another pliers to pull the other end of the jump-ring towards you to create a small opening. Do not pull the two ends of the jump ring apart by pulling them in opposite directions of each other.

www.LoveAndLightHealingSchool.com Page | 17
• If you want to attach a bead or drilled stone to the end of chain, you can do so by using a small head pin. Hold the headpin straight up and down with the sharp end pointing up. Place the bead(s) on the headpin filling it not more than half way. Gently pinch your chain-nose pliers just above the top bead and bend it 90 degrees so that your head pin looks like an upside-down "L." With a round-nose pliers, pinch the pin right next to the bend on the part of the L that doesn't have any beads on it. Turn your wrist sharply so that the wire wraps around the roundnose, creating a loop. Before closing and securing the loop, slide it on to the end of your chain length. To secure it, use the remaining wire that's hanging off the loop and wrap it tightly around the "neck" of your loop using a pliers. *Please Note: Working with headpins may require some practice first! Don't be too hard on yourself if you struggle with it the first time 'round.
• If you want to affix a bead or charm onto cord, you can simply tie it on and make a small square knot to make sure it's secure. Copyright © 2013 Kelly Small Email:

www.LoveAndLightHealingSchool.com Page | 18
• If you are making a beaded pendulum, use a very flexible craft wire or thread to string your beads or gemstone chips. Use a beading needle if you're working with tiny beads or chips.
• Attach a bale to your weight if one is needed. Then connect the weight of your pendulum to the chain or cord by either tying it on or using a jump-ring. Follow the jump-ring procedure that was explained previously.
• Consider using a jewelry clasp to attach the weight to the chain or cord. That way your pendulum weight can double as a pendant and you can wear it to better attune to its energy.
• Test out your pendulum to make sure it moves fluidly and make adjustments if necessary.
• Have fun dowsing with your new pendulum! Copyright © 2013 Kelly Small Email:

Combining Materials for Additional Benefits! A great way to enhance the healing and metaphysical properties of your handmade pendulum is to combine materials. This is a great way to experience additional benefits during your dowsing sessions. Here are some ways to do this:
• Wire-wrap a crystal or stone • Fill a metal cage with small tumbled stones or chips • Incorporate wooden beads • Use metal charms with symbols that hold significance for you • Use chain in place of cord or thread • Replace beads with gemstone chips • Use a piece of jewelry as a weight (for metal) • Incorporate lots of color
