Creating a New Petrel Project When a user starts a new project (i.e. a brand new project, not a project copied from another person), there are a few tasks that must be performed before any data loading begins. Sometimes (depending on the company), data is pre‐ loaded from a database, but often the project is "blank" and the user must begin from a new Petrel project. When this

Petrel projects always have at least one .pet file and one .ptd folder to define and contain the files for the project. The .pet file (a file with a suffix of .pet) controls the project and contains information which allows Petrel to find the needed

data in the .ptd folder. The .pet file and the .ptd folder must have the exact same name to the left of the period. The .ptd
apostila ms project
folder contains hundreds or thousands of files with meaningless (except to Petrel) names. Always choose the .pet file when accessing a project. A second file type is .bak. This is a backup of the .pet file created by Petrel. Petrel normally creates this file when you save your project. If the project is corrupted (for whatever reason), delete the .pet file and rename the .bak file to .pet and hopefully you won't have lost too much data and time. A good habit to have is to save your entire Petrel project to a different name periodically (every day, week, etc. ‐ your choice) so that if the project is

completely corrupted, you have a backup. The final Petrel file type is .lock. This file is created when someone has a Petrel project open. Its existence doesn't allow anyone else to access the Petrel project. Two users of the same Petrel project will almost guarantee that the project is corrupted.

If none are available, see if another license package has the needed options. Highlight the package name and click OK. For example, if you are going to do Seismic Interpretation, make sure the license includes that option. Most companies have fewer licenses for Seismic Interpretation than general licenses. If you aren’t going to do Seismic Interpretation, choose another license so one of your colleagues can interpret seismic. Petrel Main Window The Petrel window starts off with no project loaded. Different parts of the window perform different tasks. The main parts are:

Visualization/Graphics Area ‐ Contains all picture windows and report windows Create a New Project Creating a new project may be different depending on the company and environment. Some companies have a system where data is automatically extracted from a database and loaded into Petrel. Others have a system where the project environment is setup and the data is provided by OpenSpirit. In other cases, the user must start the project himself or herself. When Petrel begins, no project is loaded; everything is "blank". The figure below illustrates a new, blank Petrel project. Other methods for getting a new, blank project when Petrel is already running are: Go to the Tool bar at the top‐left of Petrel and click on the New Project icon (or CTRL‐N)

Click Yes to save the project and open a new blank one, No to disregard any changes since the last save and open a new blank one or Cancel to remain in the current project. Project Settings The first menu the user should open is from the Menu bar at the top of Petrel: Project > Project Settings. The Settings dialog appears:

The CRS may be null if no reference is desired. Prior to Petrel 2010, a CRS wasn't used at all. The options under Unit system: are Metric ‐ (X,Y,Z) are all in meters Field ‐ (X,Y,Z) are all in feet Field‐UTM ‐ (X,Y) are in meters and (Z) is in feet 3. To customize the units, check the box in front of Customize. This allows you to change the units of various items. 4. Choosing to change the Area unit: yields a variety of different units. 5. The Volume unit: has a number of different units to choose from: Misc settings 1 tab 6. Next, change to the Misc settings 1 tab 7. The most important variable to set here is the Auto‐ save every: switch.

[email protected] © 2011 SCM E&P Solutions, Inc. If it is not checked, Petrel will not ask you if you want to save the project. If it is checked, Petrel will ask you (in this case every 15 minutes) if you want to save the project. If you click No, no Save will be performed. If you click Yes, an Incremental Save (only those items changed since the last Save) will be performed. Remember, that if Petrel crashes, all work done since the last Save will be lost. Many people like to use this function as it has saved them from losing data while others don't like to use this function as it can be very annoying. It is up to you. If you do choose to Auto‐save, we recommend that you DO NOT use Silent auto‐ save. This doesn't ask you if you want to Save, it just Saves. This can save errors you don't want to save or tests you are trying. You can over‐write good data with bad data using Silent auto‐save.

This tab does contain the Global surface filter information. In other Petrel windows, if you click to use a filter, this window will pop up and you can enter the closed line file to use in filtering. Sometimes, this window pops up on another tab. You need to know to come to this Misc settings 2 tab to set the filter. Clicking on the OK or Apply button will save all the settings to the interactive Petrel project. You must Save your project to save it to disk. Save the Project as To save the project the first time (or to save a copy with a different name), from the Menu Bar at the top of Petrel, use the File > Save project as option: 9. Navigate to the correct folder 10. Type in a name for the project 1. Click Save

[email protected] © 2011 SCM E&P Solutions, Inc. Effects tab This is the main tab to change information. The Toolbars style: options are: a. Images only ‐ The icons have only pictures and no text b. Images and shortcuts ‐ The icons have pictures and many also have the keyboard shortcut to perform the same function. c. Images and verbose text ‐ The icons have pictures and the "tooltips" used to identify the icon. Many users use the first option (Images only) and second option (Images and shortcuts). Very few, if any, use the third option (Images and verbose test) as this makes the icons very large and not many can be seen on the screen at one time. On function bars with few icons, this is not a big problem. For some processes, the function bars contain over 30 icons. This third option can now be a big problem. Other useful options are: d. Disable spin animation e. Rename node directly (mouse) Disable spin animation turns off the ability to "spin continuously" an image in a 3D window. For many new users, it is often a problem to stop the spin when it is not wanted so they use this option. More experienced users get used to stopping the spin and often don't use this option. Rename node directly (mouse) allows a user to use a "slow double‐ click" to change a name in the Petrel Explorer similar to Windows Explorer. If this option is not checked, the only places to change an object's name are 1) in the Info tab of that object's Settings dialog and 2) using the F2 key (similar to Windows Explorer).

Make icons larger or smaller 2. Draw Style If you are having difficulty seeing the icons in Petrel, you can make them larger: 1. Make icons larger or smaller a. Right‐click on an open space in the blue area near the Menu and Tool bars b. Choose Customize.
