MEASI Academy of Architecture U.G. Level Architectural Thesis 2016-17 Deepesh Jain Project Proposal- Topic I No.2012AR21

Roll

Project: Rajasthan Crafts Museum Scale: The project is hypothetical. The location is Jaipur. I have chosen Jaipur because Rajasthan being the biggest market for crafts and handloom items in India , has very few museums dedicated to the rich cultural heritage of handmade crafts and Jaipur being the capital city of the state with very good connectivity network is the perfect site choice for tourists and travelling customers. Around 1.5 lakhs international tourists visit the city annually. The state is renowned for three types of crafts- Durbar crafts, Temple crafts and Village Craft which is again subdivided into Handmade Jewellery, Carpets and Durries , Pottery, Quilts, Mojris/jutis, Paintings, textiles and marble crafts depending on the user and the place. The project requirements areAdministration unit, Display spaces for above listed activities, Library, Exhibition space, Amphitheatre, Market place, Workshops for potters, artists, and craftsmen. Further requirements shall be added after the case study. After that I will also identify a suitable site. These are the books that I plan to read related to my thesis topic: 1.Arts & Crafts Architecture by Peter Davey.

(Anna Centenary Library)

2.Charles Correa by Kenneth Frampton.

(MEASI Library)

(Specific to National Crafts Museum, Delhi) 3.The Museum Establishment & Contemporary Art by Rebecca J. DeRoo (Anna Library) And these will be my live case studies:

1. National crafts museum, New DelhiArchitect Charles Correa has designed the National Handicrafts and Handloom Museum in Pragati Maidan Complex , New Delhi in which he has emphasized on horizontality and spatial relation and experience between the built and unbuilt with a careful use of local materials. This study shall provide an insight on open-closed spaces which can be emphasized for rich spatial experience. 2. Shilpgram, UdaipurWith an objective of increasing awareness and knowledge about the rural arts and crafts, the Shilpgram provides opportunity to rural and urban artists to come together and interact through the process of camps and workshops. This case study can help me in understanding the workplace of an artisan. 3. Sowing Seeds, JodhpurSowing Seeds (Beej Bonna)” is an interactive artist’s village residency where a residency is held every year in the month of December for a period of approximately 14 days. This interactive residency sowed the seeds of a highly creative conjunction among the rural and the contemporary artists. The above 2 case studies are public buildings and accessible. Sowing seeds start on third week of December till January first week. I shall try attending all the above three case studies. I propose to do a special study on the spatial relation between the built and the unbuilt, emphasize on the horizontality and use of courtyards and open spaces. For this I shall be reading: 1. A Place In The Shade - New Landscape & Other essays by Charles Correa (MEASI Library) 2. Sun, Wind and Light by G.Z Brown & Mark DeKay (Anna Library) 3. I have also contacted the following people and requested them to guide me at various stages of my design development: 1.
