Accommodation Accommodation Support Service Making the decision about where to live during your time at Coventry University London Campus is one of the most important you’ll make. And to help you make your decision, our Accommodation Support Team is here to assist you. There are lots of accommodation options in and around London. Depending on your preference and budget, we can help you find a suitable house or flat share, or one of our guaranteed places in Halls of Residence located close to the campus. The cost of accommodation varies widely depending on the type and location. When you are looking for accommodation, it is important to consider how close you want to be to public transport links as well as the extensive cultural and social scene that London has to offer including shops, museums, theatres, bars and restaurants. We would advise you to book well in advance to ensure you secure your preferred accommodation option. At Coventry University London Campus, we can offer you the following services:

Halls of Residence CULC has agreements with companies such as Liberty Living, which provide purpose built student accommodation with a range of room options to suit your budget. Studio rooms often include basic kitchen facilities, while en suite rooms require you to share the kitchen facilities with other students. To help you budget your living expenses, all costs such as internet and utility bills are included in the price and facilities generally include a gym, launderette and common social areas. The Halls of Residences are in locations close to the campus as well as further out of the city to offer you a full set of options. Get in touch with the Accommodation Support Team for more information and to take advantage of our guaranteed places.

Flat or house share If you prefer to rent a house or flat, our Accommodation Support Team can connect you with approved agents and available properties, and assist you through the process of securing a property. We can also put you in contact with other students who are looking to share accommodation prior to your arrival in London. This type of accommodation is often a cheaper option than a fully serviced room. It is important to bear in mind that in addition to your rent you will also have to pay for other costs including utility bills and internet charges.

Programmes and Entry Requirements Programme Structure Postgraduate programmes are full-time with start dates in October, January, April and July. Undergraduate programmes are full-time with start-dates in October and January. The academic year is split into four terms or quadmesters. Each quadmester is 10 weeks, followed by a short break. This offers you the opportunity to start your programme at a time to suit you and allows you to complete the programme within the minimum duration possible. You can also choose to intermit for a quadmester should you wish to undertake additional work experience (subject to visa restrictions).

Top-up Programmes CULC Top-up programmes allow entry to the final year of a BA degree programme for students from outside the UK who have a sound background of study and knowledge. Students undertake in-depth study of particular areas of business interest dependant on previous study and knowledge, and help to prepare them for a career in international business and management. The international environment is complicated by pressure for business to globalise, to overcome cultural barriers and to accept high levels of risk in some markets. This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the challenges of international business and of the strategic issues facing businesses.

Developing Business Practice Code: LON302BUS

The transition into learning at a new level poses all students a differing level of challenge. The aim of this module is to ensure students have a clear understanding of the requirements of the final year of undergraduate study and provides them with a range of skills that will enable them to navigate their programme of study with the greatest chance of success.

Workplace Project/Work-based Project Code: LON303BUS

At CULC we are committed to ensuring students have ‘a real business experience’. A key element of this is the opportunity to gain work experience and have the chance to put theory into practice in a real business environment. This can be in any area of business (including sales and marketing, finance and human resource management), usually in the UK but occasionally overseas. Students may choose the area of work. We encourage all students to apply for workplace projects, which are relevant to their studies and, if possible, match their career aspirations.

International Finance Code: LON304BUS

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the international dimension of finance and how this impacts upon business. By the end of this module students should appreciate the workings and operation of currency derivatives markets, the international money and capital markets and the principles of currency risk management. The subject matter of the module includes study of currency markets, international parity conditions, international money and capital markets, the nature and importance of currency risk and strategies for managing currency risk.

International Human Resource Management Code: LON305BUS

The aim of this module is to provide students with an overview of what Human Resource Management (HRM) is, how they can apply the key concepts in their own work contexts and the contingencies affecting it. Students will be equipped with a critical understanding of the key human resource management processes, including the recruitment and selection of staff, their training and development, and the ways in which their performance can be assessed and rewarded.

International Marketing Strategy Code: LON312BUS

This module introduces students to the various aspects of international marketing with the principal objective of developing skills in the identification, analysis and solution of problems encountered in international marketing theories and the development of international marketing strategies.

Marketing Communications Code: LON306BUS

This module will provide an insight into the discourse of marketing communications and enable students to develop a critical appreciation of marketing communications theory and practice. It will offer an insight into how the media planning function works with the other communication areas in order to produce communication campaigns that deliver on business and marketing objectives.

Advanced Marketing Strategy Code: LON307BUS

This module will help students identify opportunities and target markets, position brands and form the basis for competing and growth strategies necessary to an organisation´s sustainable future. Even in organisations recognising the role of strategising, there is often poor implementation planning and ineffective roll-out of the determined strategy. This module will support students in the development of the necessary skills to overcome such issues.

Management Accounting for Business Decisions Code: LON308BUS

Important aims of this module are for students to gain an understanding of the limitations of Management Accounting techniques. In order to do this, students must first understand what the techniques try to do and how they do it. In addition, students are introduced to the behavioural aspects of Managerial Accounting in areas such as transfer pricing, divisional performance and business performance management. This module also looks at current controversial issues such as the use of activity-based costing as opposed to absorption costing.

Audit and Internal Control Code: LON382ACC

The module builds on and requires knowledge and understanding of financial accounting and reporting developed earlier in the programme. Its aim, for different business entities, operating in an international environment, is to develop understanding and critical evaluation of internal control risks and organisational responses, as well as audit processes and their application in the context of the external regulatory framework. Subject to accreditation, the module will enable students to gain exemptions from some professional accounting qualification papers.

International Corporate Reporting Code: LON380ACC

The focus of this module is international corporate reporting and its detailed aims are to ensure students understand and are able to apply the main provisions of international accounting standards, as well as, prepare financial statements for various business combinations. Subject to accreditation, the module will enable students to gain exemptions from some professional accounting qualification papers.

Financial Management Code: LON311BUS

Students will become familiar with the major strands of financial management theory and attempt to apply the theory to real world applications. The objective is to familiarise students with the major strands of financial management theory and to attempt to apply the theory to real world applications. All major areas of financial management will be covered including fixed and working capital asset management, capital investment, the financing of the company, the valuation of companies and the measurement and evaluation of performance in financial terms. Underlying the entire module will be the relationship between risk and the rate of return.

The Coventry University London Campus Masters in Business Administration programme has been designed to explore in detail the nature and implications of these changes and provide students with the skills and mindsets that will allow them to operate effectively within, and lead, the organisations of the future.

MBA Modules Advanced Business Practice Code: LCM001

The transition into learning at a new level poses all students a differing level of challenge. The aim of this module is to ensure students have a clear understanding of the requirements of postgraduate study and provide them with a range of skills that will enable them to navigate their programme of study with the greatest chance of success.

Sustainable Strategy - from Planning to Implementation Code: LCM002

This module challenges concepts of strategy, its scope, purpose and outcomes and provides a practical outline of a number of different approaches to strategic management. To be effective, strategic managers need to know the particular strengths and weaknesses of each approach and recognise where and how they might be used with advantage. This module will prepare students to engage critically with strategy in the workplace.

Leading in a Changing World Code: LCM005

In a volatile and unpredictable economy and even in good times, leaders must demonstrate extraordinary performance to their employees, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders. The ability to lead sustainable strategic change is a key characteristic of effective senior managers and executives. This module examines the knowledge, skills, behaviours and techniques of leadership and explores the role of leadership in relation to other business themes such as strategy, innovation and organisational development.

The aim of this module is to explore key accounting and finance practice and the associated decision-making tools within organisations. This module explores marketing: the application of marketing techniques and concepts to a number of different environments. It analyses the nature of marketing, the core concepts, techniques and processes. In our consultations with business leaders and prospective MBA students, they told us how much work experience matters. CULC is committed to offering students a work experience opportunity for up to 10 weeks. This experience will provide an opportunity:

• For first-hand experience of the business and working culture of an organisation • To work independently on a significant, managerial issue with your employer’s support and academic guidance • To create management reports for multiple stakeholders • To build commercial awareness and understanding in the context of decision-making • To develop more effective communication and presentation skills • To build up a stronger set of personal and professional skills Work experience at CULC can be undertaken in a variety of ways; an internship, an individual consultancy project or a group consulting project.

Dissertation Code: LPM004

As an alternative to completing an internship or Consulting Project, the dissertation forms a substantial part of the overall study leading to the MBA and is an opportunity for work experience related to the in-depth study of an organisation. The dissertation should draw on the intellectual and analytical skills and knowledge developed during the programme. The module also provides an opportunity for students to develop their interest in a particular area related to their career aspirations and to demonstrate an ability to undertake individual research.

Project Management Code: LOG001

The unprecedented pace of change, which organisations have experienced over the last three decades, has transformed organisational structures, business processes, roles and responsibilities, distribution channels, and the use of IT. In most cases, this transformation has been achieved by treating the desired change as a project. Projects typically account for 50% of all work carried out across organisations. This module critically evaluates the growing importance of project management in todays business environment.

From Local to Global: Strategies for International Development Code: LIM002 As businesses are forced into identifying new markets to achieve growth, the ability to critically evaluate market entry strategies becomes key to success. This module has been designed to help students identify potential countries for a company’s selected products or services; to conduct a situation analysis of a company; to identify global market opportunities; and to select best markets.

Managing International Trade Code: LIM003

This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the main issues in international trade from an operative point of view. In addition to reviewing the main actors, regulations and institutions involved, and analysing world trade exchanges and characteristics, students will also have the opportunity to engage in the technical and operational aspects of international trade.

Global HRM Strategies Code: LHR004

This module considers the political, economic and social factors that impact on international human resource management and employee relations. Students will identify the human resource challenges and opportunities that face multinational enterprises, such as how national and regional differences impact on the employment relationship. Students will evaluate international human resource management strategies and policies in a range of operational areas.

Banking Regulation & Risk Code: LFB001

The recent banking crisis has motivated heightened discussion of the merits of bank regulations used to minimise the risk of bank distress and intervention tools to mitigate its effects. In this module, students will study technical aspects of bank regulation, supervision and intervention to resolve crises.

Global Financial Markets Code: LFM002

The aims of this module are to enable students to understand the characteristics and organisation of the international financial markets and to identify their potential uses in business situations. The module also aims to enable students to identify the potential risks and dangers in the use of these markets.

Financial Enterprise and Social Responsibility Code: LFM003

Contemporary organisations can no longer afford to view business ethics only in terms of administrative compliance with legal standards and adherence to internal rules and regulations. This module examines the relationship between financial and accounting practice and these social responsibilities.

International Accounting Perspectives Code: LFM004

With the increasing globalisation of accounting regulation, knowledge of the requirements of the International Accounting Standards is now essential to anyone studying international business. This module aims to deepen and broaden students’ technical competence, critical knowledge, and conceptual understanding of global financial reporting, and to help apply this knowledge in increasingly complex situations.

Retail Marketing Management Code: LMM001

This module provides students with a foundation in the theoretical and practical aspects of retail marketing and describes the importance, organisation and composition of the contemporary retail sector. It also provides them with an understanding of the elements of the retail marketing mix and considers the influence of the socio-economic environment and the field.

Buyer Behaviour Analysis: the Psychology of Buying Code: LMM002

This module introduces students to the study of consumer behaviour. The various determinants of behaviour are examined and the applications of theory are considered and critiqued. The primary aim is to provide students with an understanding of consumer behaviour and how this knowledge can be used to inform commercial decisions.

Alternative Markets Code: LMM003

The module introduces students to growing areas of marketing application through a study of real-life social marketing practices. In this module, students will develop their understanding of the challenges, differences and difficulties of this new area and will enhance their understanding of the differences of practices for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

Creativity Code: LMM004

This module provides a critical introduction to the study of creativity in a business context. Students will learn to critically assess the need for creativity in management and business and understand the theories underlying creative approaches. Students will evaluate the techniques for effectively and creatively solving managerial problems in ways that are acceptable to national and organisational cultures.

International Manufacturing Strategy Code: LEM001

This strategy-level module focuses on facilitating the achievement of long-term profitability within manufacturing companies. It recognises the emergence of a new and very different market reality that places very different demands on managers in terms of patterns of thinking and their behaviour. The module therefore helps develop skills and mindsets that will allow students to operate within and lead the manufacturing organisations of the future.

This module aims to address the issue of environmental responsibility, industry’s impact on the planet and the growing need for business to provide sustainably designed, manufactured and delivered products whilst at the same time improving operating performance adding shareholder value and creating wealth.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Manufacturing Sector Code: LEM004 With the changes in the global business environment, there is a growing importance of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) as original equipment manufacturers and as tier suppliers within the supply chain. This module aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the theory, practices and importance of entrepreneurship in not only larger multinational organisations but within SMEs as well.

International Environmental Law Code: LOG004

Many environmental problems require an international response. This module aims to provide students with an insight into international environmental law with a focus on the general themes and principles in this area, the law relating to the protection of biodiversity, and that which endeavours to prevent or at least minimise the impact of transfrontier pollution.

Integrated Emergency Management: Practice and Issues Code: LOG002

This highly critical module examines the emergency management practices undertaken over the last decade. Students will identify the related issues and discuss possible solutions in order to propose ways in which emergency management might address the future issues more effectively.

Impacts of Oil Production in the Developing World Code: LOG003

This module considers the different aspects of oil diplomacy, together with the diplomatic consequences of the domination of the oil industry by the large multinational oil companies, and the impact of the formation of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). It also considers the role of oil diplomacy in broader themes in international relations, such as imperialism, the role of multinational corporations in the world economy, Third World nationalism, the changing relationships between the developed and developing nations, and the consequences of the Cold War and perceptions of national security for the conduct of oil diplomacy.

International Organisational Design and Development Code: LHR001

This module focuses on the theories and techniques of organisational development (OD) and change. It defines a number of key concepts in this area of study, including: organisational structure and culture; action research; and models of planned organisational change.

New Technology at Work Code: LHR002

Physical labour and the use of machinery at work have been closely entwined since the birth of the Industrial Revolution. The design and use of technology has been a central issue for organisational psychology since the initial days of the discipline. This module focuses on the psychological, social and organisational issues involved in the development and use of computer-based technologies at work.

Developing People Code: LHR003

This module aims to provide a grounding in the strategic management and development of people in organisations. Students will gain an understanding of business strategy in order to formulate appropriate human resource strategies. This module will take a macro to micro view of the human resource function and encourage students to apply theory to practice in order to develop the professional skills needed to operate effectively as a human resource business partner to line management.

English Language Requirements and Support for Overseas Students All programmes require students, where English is not their first language or where their undergraduate studies were not conducted or assessed in English, to have achieved an IELTS score of at least 6.5 or equivalent prior to entry. It is important in subjects like management, business, marketing, finance or human resource management that students are able to express their ideas clearly and communicate with other students. Reading and writing skills are equally important. Furthermore, companies will be reluctant to offer internships to students whose command of spoken or written English is weak. Therefore, CULC believes that English proficiency is an essential precondition for personal success in our programmes and the wider world of work.

A 5-week academic English and study skills course commences in central London in late-August every year in preparation for BA (Hons) Top-up or Masters programmes which start in October. This course is for students who currently have IELTS 6 and want to raise their IELTS score to the minimum English necessary to progress satisfactorily on postgraduate Business programmes. The course will help you to make a good start to your academic studies. A second 5 week English course starts in November in central London in preparation for programmes commencing in January. Again, these courses are for students who currently have IELTS 6 and want to raise their IELTS score to the minimum English necessary to progress on postgraduate Business programmes.

Provided your IELTS score is at least 6 and that you agree to undertake and satisfactorily complete a 5 week pre-sessional course in English, you will be enrolled on your chosen programme provided that you meet the other entry criteria.

Students who have an IELTS score of 5.5 must enrol on a 10 week pre-sessional English Course that runs in central London in July and October. This course is suitable if you already have an upper intermediate standard of English but need to develop fluency and increase your knowledge of the language before starting your course. ‘My IELTS score is currently 5. Induction At CULC we are committed to providing you with a ‘realbusiness experience’ from the outset and this begins with your formal 3-day orientation (usually Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). At Coventry University London Campus we understand that undertaking Higher Education overseas is a major financial decision. That’s why we offer Early Payment Discounts for those students who plan ahead and submit the first instalment of their tuition fees in advance.

Alumni students holding Coventry University full honours degrees will receive a discount of £500 from the full-time fees payable for their postgraduate programme, providing they enrol within 12 months of graduating from Coventry University.

• Students that pay their 33% deposit 13 weeks prior to course start date will be eligible for a £750 discount. For example, for the October 2010 start, students paying by 4 June 2010 will be eligible.

Terms and Conditions

• Students that pay their 33% deposit 9 weeks prior to course start date will be eligible for a £500 discount. For example, for the October 2010 start, students paying by 30 July 2010 will be eligible.

• The number of discounts available on each scheme is limited, so students are encouraged to apply for their course early • The Early Payment Discount deadline is deemed to have been met if the applicant has paid a 33% deposit by the deadline.
