OBJECTI,E OF THE COURSE: The principal objective of the course is to provide students with a good grounding in the fundamental concepts of intellectual property rights (IPRs- as encompassing different categories). The course adopts an integrated approach to law and policy so as to enable the students to understand the socio-economic and  political implications implications arising out of legal protection in the form of IPRs IPRs especially in the conte!t of TRIP" TRIP" #greement and other international commitments. $ence it is pertinent to loo% into the subject from a developing country perspective while %eeping in mind the international commitments. It is also important to loo% into the subject from the perspective of changing models of %nowledge creation and diffusion (especially in the digital and the biotechnology conte!t) and to understand what role IPRs can play in the %nowledge century. century. The course will hence proceed with the following specific objectives&     

'nderstanding the nature of %nowledge as a property concept and its distinction from intellectual  property.  property. Identifying the philosophical underpinnings of IPRs including justifications for the same. 'nderstanding the historical factors that led to the growth of different forms of IPRs including socio-economic and geopolitical factors that contribute to the formation of theoretical foundations. To identify the nature and e!tent of protection afforded afforded the owners of intellectual property. !amining how national IPR laws are structured so as to cater to the needs and development of  economic and cultural growth of the nation in the conte!t of the obligations under TRIP" and in answering new international demands.
