Fossil Hunt You don’t have to be a professional paleontologist to collect fossils. Anybody can do it. All you need is some basic information, a good place, and a lot of patience. Just follow these suggestions: Check what kind of rocks you need to find. Most fossils hide in sedimentary rock. This forms when tiny bits of rocks and minerals join together over millions of years. Plants and animals between layers of sediment become fossils. Wrap your fossils in toilet paper. Then use plastic bags to protect them. A backpack is a good place to keep your fossils.
Look for fossils in places where wind and water erosion expose old rock.
Use a pen to write notes about your adventures in a little notebook.
So you are ready to go fossil hunting. Make sure that you go to a place where it is OK to collect fossils. Check with an adult if you’re not sure. Remember: never go alone or into dangerous areas. Mark ( or ) each sentence. 1. Only professional paleontologists find fossils. 2. Rocks and minerals cover fossils. 3. Very old plants and animals are fossils. 4. You can’t protect fossils. 5. It’s better to go alone to look for fossils. 18

2 Read and underline the animals. Carnivores, Herbivores, and Omnivores
We can classify animals based
on what they eat. A carnivore is an animal that eats only meat, like lions. An herbivore is an animal that eats only plants, like elephants. An omnivore is an animal that eats meat and plants, like humans.
Some more examples of herbivores are horses, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, and zebras. Some carnivores are leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, tigers, and piranhas. Other omnivores include chickens, crows, squirrels, domestic dogs, and pigs.
Classify the animals from the text.

Aesop and His Fables
Aesop and His Master
A
esop was a Greek storyteller. He lived around 2,500 years ago. Some say he was a slave. His master liked his stories so much that he decided to give Aesop his freedom. The Greeks were like that: they appreciated talent. There are no records to prove that Aesop ever wrote anything down. Fortunately, many years after his death, people started to write down these fables to share them easily. Now you can find adaptations of Aesop’s fables, many of them illustrated, and translated into almost every language. We all enjoy these wonderful stories today—fables created a long time ago!

Tsunamis 1
Read and answer the questions.
Tsunamis
T
he word tsunami comes from two Japanese words: tsu, which means “harbor,” and nami, which means “wave.” A tsunami is a series of huge waves. It happens after there is movement of the earth under the sea—because of an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or the impact of a large meteorite. It is similar to what happens when you throw a rock in the water: the waves travel in all directions. In a tsunami, the waves can travel as fast as 800 km/h. The big waves grow when they are closer to the beach. They can be as high as 30 m. They can destroy buildings and houses.
On September 29, 2009, an earthquake caused a tsunami on the islands of Samoa. Samoa is in the Pacific Ocean, between New Zealand and Hawaii.
The tsunami destroyed many villages and a lot of people died. Do you remember this or other tsunamis?
1. What language does the word tsunami come from? 2. What causes a tsunami? 3. How high can tsunami waves be? 4. What caused the tsunami in Samoa in 2009? 5. Where is Samoa? Answer True or False. 1. A tsunami is one huge wave. 2. In a tsunami, waves travel in all directions. 3. All tsunami waves travel at 8 km/h. 4. Tsunami waves are bigger when they are close to the beach. 5. Nobody died in the tsunami in Samoa in 2009. 38

Mark ( or ) what you think. 1. Plants can’t grow in the winter. 2. The sun keeps the Earth warm. 3. Gases in the atmosphere affect the temperature of the planet. Read the text and check your answers.
The Greenhouse Effect
D
o you know what a greenhouse is? It looks like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. The glass panels let in light but do not let heat escape. This keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter.
O
n Earth, the gases in the atmosphere work like a greenhouse. They collect solar energy and make the planet warm. Some rays escape and go back into space. Without the greenhouse gases, the Earth would be very cold. Greenhouse gases are good in small quantities. In large quantities, the Earth becomes too warm.
C
arbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas. Humans create it when power plants, cars, trucks and airplanes burn fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas). More CO2 means that the atmosphere collects more energy from the sun. This makes the temperature of our planet go up: global warming.
Write right, wrong, or doesn’t say. 1. Plants can grow in greenhouses in the winter. 2. Greenhouses are full of gases. 3. The greenhouse gases keep the earth warm. 4. There are 20 types of greenhouse gases. 5. Humans can’t make greenhouse gases. 6. Global warming burns fossil fuels. 58

It is important to take care of our planet, but it is good to take care of our bodies too. You probably have a lot of activities: school, taking care of your pets, running around with friends, going to sports practice or other activities and doing your homework. By the end of the day, your body needs a break. Sleep helps your body and brain rest for the next day. You need 10 to 11 hours a night, but most kids sleep only about 9.5 hours. This is a problem. Almost everything that is alive needs sleep to survive. Even your dog or cat takes naps. Animals sleep for the same reason you do—to give their body a tiny vacation. Choose which one needs more sleep—the child or the animal. 5

Comets are part of the solar system. They sy orbit bi the sun. Part of a comet’s orbit is very, very far from the sun, and part is close to it. All comets have a center, or nucleus. It is like a ball made of ice and dust. When the comet gets closer to the sun, some of the ice and dust starts to melt, like an ice cube close to a hot object. We see the particles and gases on a cloud called a coma. It forms a tail.

NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer telescope captured a very surprising image of Mira: it showed for the first time that it has a long tail of dust and gas— 13 light-years long! That is 122,989,496,143,550.4 km!

7.4 Pluto is very far from the sun. Sometimes it is times billion kilometers away from the sun. That’s 39 rage the distance between Earth and the sun. Its ave is temperature is -230 degrees Celsius, and its day size more than 6 Earth days long. It is only 1/5 of the red that of Earth’s moon. In addition, scientists discove s and Pluto is part of an asteroid belt – a field of rock There debris that orbits the sun from very far away. , are other large rocks similar to Pluto: Ceres, Eris mples. Makemake and Haumea are the primary exa e other In 2006, scientists agreed to call Pluto and thes objects dwarf planets.
Why Isn’t Pluto a Planet Anymore? Body
planet In summary, Pluto is not a planet. It’s a dwarf e because it is very small and there are other larg objects near to it.
Conclusion
People started discovering planets hundreds of years ago. They called them planets, which refers to the way they travel across the sky. A scientist nam ed Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930. It took a long time to find it because it’s very small and it’s very far away – you can only see it with a large tele scope.

The Mayan people were one of the only ancient civilizations that understood the concept of zero. So it was possible for them to write very large numbers. How to Include Fruits and Vegetables in Your Diet
F it andd vegetables Fruits t bl are a goodd source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. If you include more fruits and vegetables in your diet, you will prevent many diseases. Sometimes it is difficult to include them in our meals, but here are some ideas: • Add fresh or dried fruit to your cereal. • Eat raw vegetables before dinner. • Make a smoothie with fresh or frozen fruits. • Spread peanut butter onto celery sticks or carrots.
• IInclude l d a ffruitit or veggie i sticks ti k in your lunchbox. • Freeze fruits and eat them as a snack. • Eat vegetable soup or pizza. • Add fruit to yogurt. A balanced diet that includes a lot of fruits and vegetables will help you stay more alert at school and avoid sleep disorders. Remember: fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. (Junk food is OK, too, but in moderation!) Start eating healthy now!

What do you think? Write Yes or No. 1. Overweight children can develop diabetes. 2. You should exercise regularly to be healthy. 3. Kids should exercise at least 20 minutes every day. 4. An average kid watches television for an hour a day. 5. Swimming is better for you than basketball. 6. You don’t need to exercise to be active. Read the text and mark ( or ) your answers.
Be Active! Overweight kids can develop serious health problems like diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure. Exercising is one of the most important ways to keep your body healthy. Your muscles, bones and heart get stronger when you exercise. You also burn excess fat and feel better. Kids should exercise at least one hour a day, but many don’t get enough exercise. The average kid spends about three hours a day watching television and three more hours sitting down, often playing video games or surfing the
Internet. Does this sound like you? If it does, you should get up and get moving! Soccer, swimming, biking, and basketball are great ways to stay in shape. But there are many other ways to get active. Be creative and find your own way to have fun. • Play catch with your friends. • Host a dance marathon. The last dancer standing wins! • Create an obstacle race in your back yard.
Add two more activities that can keep you active.

2 Read and answer the questions. Teenagers and sports are an incredibly healthy mix. Physical activity has amazing
benefits for both mind and body. So why not get off that couch and onto the playing field this summer?
Team Sports
Doing activities in groups is fun, and sports are no exception. Team sports help develop strength and coordination; they also build leadership and other social skills. In addition, team sports are a great way to learn to manage stress better. The most popular team sports for teenagers are football, volleyball, and basketball.
Life Sports
If you don’t like the idea of joining a team, there are other sports for individual participation. These sports are a good option if you prefer to progress at your own pace. Life sports give you the physical workout your body needs regularly. They include swimming, squash, gymnastics, karate, and skateboarding.
It doesn’t matter whether you choose a team sport or a life sport. The key is to find a sport that interests you. It will help you stay active and fit while you have fun. 1. What are the benefits of team sports?
2. What are the benefits of life sports?
3. Is it better to choose a team sport? 4. Can you have fun and stay active? 102
