Leather Grains
Genuine leather is highly desired for its fashionable look and durable nature. Cowhide leather is a term specifically applied to leather made from the hides (the skins) of cows, although it is generally used to designate any leather tanned from the hides of animals of the bovine species. The natural or embossed pattern and texture of a hide's surface is called the grain. There are multiple types of leather grains to choose from, each with their own features and benefits.
Full Grain Only premium leathers are full grain. The unaltered surface of the hide is aniline dyed (see below) but not buffed or sanded. Full grain leather features natural marks on the hide, such as scratches, fencing, stretch marks and wrinkles, to create an individual and unique appearance.
Top Grain Made from the outermost upper layer of the hide, it is the only leather recommended to use for high quality sofas. Top grain is the most durable part of a leather hide due to the strength of the fibres. The best top grain leather reflects that an animal has lived in an environment that resulted in limited scratches, insect bites or other damage.
Corrected Grain The leather has all the imperfections removed and an artificial grain applied .
Semi-corrected Top Grain The leather is only corrected if there are major imperfections, like deep scratches.
Split Grain Split grain comes from the bottom part of the hide. The process of tanning leather involves reducing the hide to the thickness required for upholstered products. The back of an animal has a thicker skin, so it is split to create a piece of leather out of this extra thickness. Split grain has a stamped and painted surface in order to have the appearance of top grain leather. This is often use on the sides and back of the furniture to allow a more affordable price point.
Leather Finishes Aniline Dyed
The process of colouring leathers using non-toxic aniline dyes. The dye is transparent and therefore allows the hide’s natural look to remain visible.
Protected Aniline The leather has been aniline dyed and then slightly pigmented to ensure colour consistency. It also makes the surface more durable than less-processed leather.
Leather-Match Leather-match furniture combines top grain leather on visible areas, like seats and cushions, with skillfully matched vinyl on the sides and back of the furniture. Leather-match looks and feels like leather, at a more affordable price.
Bi-cast Leather This product comes in roll form like fabric. Split leather is used as a backing so a customer can see or feel the leather. A finish is created by applying polyurethane (PU) to provide the colour, texture and strength.
Bonded Leather Bonded leather creates a look and feel similar to genuine leather, but consists of a synthetic material made of polyurethane (PU) with leather shavings are sprayed onto it and then stamped with a grain-like pattern.
Leather Look Polyurethane (PU) is a very effective form of plastic that can be applied to fabric or other products to create beautiful, durable and lower-cost furniture pieces. Vinyl is a product similar to polyurethane but normally not as durable or versatile. It is normally lower in cost than polyurethane so is used for match applications where strength is not an issue. This is often use on the sides and back of the furniture to allow a more affordable price point.
Nappa/Napa It is a lengthy and complicated tanning process applied to full grain sheep or lamb hides that results in exceptional softness, suppleness and durability. A hide that is described as nappa is therefore amongst the highest grade of leather that can be achieved but is correspondingly expensive. Any that claim to be made of a nappa leather and are retailing for less than £100 ($150) should be viewed with some scepticism.
Nubuck In this process the top layer of full grain hide is buffed or very finely sanded to produce a soft, velvety finish similar to suede. However the quality is much higher and so is the price. Nubuck
leather jackets are more susceptible to water staining and therefore benefit from waterproof finishes.
Suede In which the underside of the hide is used. This is more fibrous with a matt, napped finish but lacks the durability of the a full hide. Like nubuck it is prone to discolouration when in contact with water unless a treatment has been applied.
Split Used as a cost cutting measure, the top layer of the hide is sliced away resulting in two thinner layers. It allows some retailers to market jackets at very low prices whilst still claiming they are 'leather'. Avoid.
Types of leather used in jackets We are often asked, 'which is the best quality hide for a leather jacket?' The annoyingly vague answer is, 'whichever suits the style and function of the jacket best' This is an important point and worth remembering. The type of leather used should always be dependent on the style and purpose of the garment. The major distinction between leather types originates with the animal that the hide came from. The general rule is the larger the animal, the thicker and heavier the leather.
Cow and buffalo The toughest of the hides and used in shoes, furnishings as well as jackets. The leather is on the stiff side and offers excellent abrasion resistance and protection but at the expense of weight, drape and comfort. You will often find it used in motorcycle protective gear. and biker styles where toughness is the prime consideration. Jackets made of cow hide can take a long time to 'wear in'. Of the two, buffalo hide has more grain than cow.
Sheep and lamb Finer grained, more supple and lighter weight than cow but still tough and durable, this leather is often described as having a 'buttery' feel. Sheep hides offer a good balance between comfort, style and strength. They particularly suits jacket styles where suppleness is important such as bomber jackets, blazers and reefers.
Pig Cheap and not particularly cheerful. The leather made from pig skin is thin, plasticy with a shiny finish and very poor durability. Pigskin is often used when price is the most important factor
soit is recommended to avoid it where possible. One should be particularly suspicious of leather jackets retailing for less than £100 ($150) as pig may have been used to keep the price down.
The Types of Leather Used in Handbags & Accessories There are some basic differences between the types of leather used to make handbags and other fashion accessories. The type of leather used in a product is very important depending on what the product is used for.
Cowhide Leather Cowhide leather comes from the skin of a cow, as the name indicates. This type of leather can be found in automobile seats, sofas and chairs in your house, and the more durable fashion items. Purses made of cowhide will normally last longer than purses made from other types of leather. Cowhide leather will usually have a good amount of noticable texture (slightly rough feeling to the touch). Many high end manufacturers use high quality, and very expensive, cowhide to make their products - such as Coach or Fendi.
Lambskin Leather Lambskin leather comes from sheep. As a sheep has much less skin than a cow, the items made from lambskin will usually be smaller. Many people like lambskin for its soft and smooth texture. Items made from lambskin will usually tear, scratch, or become indented much easier than those made of cowhide.
Faux Leather Faux leather is artificial leather. This type of material will often look just like higher quality leather. People who know leather can tell the difference by touching or looking at faux leather. One way for anyone to tell is that faux leather will never have any creases or deformities. Leather that comes from an animal's skin will always show the cuts and scrapes endured by the animal over its lifetime. Many people prefer faux leather as it can be more durable than even high end cowhide and because it will always look perfect. Others prefer it because they don't like the use of animal skin in products - for personal reasons.
Patch Leather Patch leather is a term used to describe when an item is made from smaller pieces of leather. The type of leather can be either cowhide or lambskin. Patch leather is almost always cheaper than other types of real leather as it usually comes from left over pieces. Some of the leather used in patch can be of very high quality, but it will not command the same price.
The different types of leather for Belt
The varying types of leather are produced in different ways, which lead to their differing qualities. There are significantly more types of leather than I’ve listed, but these few are the main ones involved in the making of belts.
Synthetic Leather Belts Synthetic leather is exactly what it sounds like – fake leather. Belts of this material are usually created with different polymers and fibers to create the “feel” of leather. However, they aren’t real leather and don’t last very long.
Bonded Leather Belts This type of leather is 100% real leather. However, the making of these belts involve waste scraps of unwanted leather left over from other products. The small fibers are glued together and then covered to still create the same look of a leather belt. These cost manufacturers only a fraction of the price it takes them to make higher quality belts.
Genuine Leather Belts What many people believe to be the top quality leather belt. These belts are also 100% leather, and also occasionally include leftover leather scraps. The belt will consist of layer after layer of inferior leather (leftover leather scraps, etc.) glued or sewn together. Then, the outer layers will be covered with a top-grain leather surface or sometimes even synthetic leather material. The inferior leather layers on the inside help reduce the cost of these belts, making them much cheaper than full-grain leather belts.
Full-grain Leather Belts These are the highest quality leather belts out there. This “natural” leather is made from the top layer of the animal’s skin. Occasionally, strips of this leather will have blemishes that were marks left on the animal’s skin. This type of leather belt is straight up leather – no crummy leather leftovers on the inside – and as a result, is the toughest. True, its leather quality makes it more prone to showing scratches, but in terms of lifespan, durability, flexibility, and strength, full-grain leather belts cannot be beaten.
What Type of Leather is Best? This really depends on two factors: how much do one want to pay and what is the item designed to do. If one wants:
leather backpack - cowhide will last the longest and be the least likely to tear handbag - cowhide if you want the longest lasting, lambskin if you want the softest feeling cell phone cases - lambskin for softness, faux leather for perfection and durability id holder - lambskin or cowhide as this type of item usually does not undergo severe trauma luggage tag - cowhide or faux leather camera case - lambskin for softness, cowhide or faux leather for perfection and durability cigarette case - lambskin for softness, cowhide or faux leather for perfection and durability
