WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS

TECHNICAL BULLETIN

VARIABLE EFFLUENTS, RELIABLE SOLUTIONS The purpouse of Water Treatment Systems is the reduction of the gas, free oil content and suspended solids in the Produced Water before the discharge or the routing to the open drain system. The reduction of contaminants may be also led to the recovery of the treated water for production use (for example deoiling of steam condensate). The technical characteristics of the Water Treatment System can vary due to the inlet concentration of the contaminants and the outlet reduction required to comply with environment protection regulations or open drain process specification.

Waste water treatment Waste Water Treatment Systems usually treat produced water streams which contain oil from hydrocarbons and suspended solids. The contaminants removal is achieved using flotation units suitable to be installed in reducedspace skid mounted package. The flotation equipments do not need additional gas blower or compressor since the flotation gas is self-induced by recirculating part of the water from the discharge box to the flotator cells with pumps and injector system. The contaminant oils or solids adhere to the bubbles which rise to the surface. Polyelectrolyte addition is required to further increase the adherence. The rising bubbles with contaminants create a floating froth which is continuously skimmed and routed to an API Separator. Additional facilities for the degassing of produced water can be installed upstream the flotation unit to remove the dissolved gases coming from the process.

VARIABLE EFFLUENTS, RELIABLE SOLUTIONS Oily water treatment Oily Water Treatment Systems (OWTS) treat effluents which contain oil and dissolved gas coming from FWKO Drums, Wellhead Test Separators or Coalescers. The evolved gas is vented to the atmosphere at safe locations or routed to LP flare and the separated oil is routed to the closed drain system. The OWTS may be composed of two sections: • High Pressure Deoiling section, which treats directly the water produced by FWKO Drums and Wellhead Test Separators. • Low Pressure Degassing and Coalescing section, which treats the water underflow from High Pressure section eventually mixed with produced water from Condensate Coalescer. Hydrocyclones separation vessels are used in the HP section designed and constructed to face severe process conditions due to the high content of chloride salts in the produced water and to sour characteristics.

In some applications the oil separation can be enhanced with the injection of demulsifier chemicals upstream the hydrocyclones, avoiding the need of the LP coalescing section depending by free oil content to be guaranteed. In the LP section a gas/liquid 2-phase separator (degassing drum) is installed in order to remove entrained and evolved gas from the produced water as a consequence of the high upstream pressure drop. Filters and coalescing equipment are installed downstream the degassing drum so to perform final oil removal ensuring also the separation of small oil droplets. Filters protect the coalescer elements against fouling. In the coalescing equipment the oil condensate phase is collected and continuously routed to the oil outlet connection.
