C H A O S SPACE M A R I N E A R M Y LIST
O
n the following pages you'll find an army lisl that will allow you to liefd a Chaos Space Marine army in games of Warhammer 40,000, The army IIsi lets you to light battles using the scenarios included in (he Warhammer 40,000 rule book and also provides you with the basic information you'll need in order to field a Chaos Space Marine army in scenarios youVe devised yourself or thai form par! of a campaign. The army list is split into five sections. All of the squads, vehicles and characters in an army list are placed in one of the five seel ions depending upon their role on the battlefield. In addition, every model is given a points value, which varies depending upon how effective that model is on the battlefield. Before you can choose an army for a game you will need to agree with your opponent upon a scenario and the total amount of points each of you can spend on your forces. Having done this you can proceed to pick an army as described below.
USING A FORCE ORGANISATION CHART The army lists are used with the force organisation chart from a scenario. Each chart is split inlo five categories that correspond to the sections in the army list and each category may have one or more boxes. Each light toned box means that you may make one choice from that section of the army list, but a dark toned box means that you must make a choice from that section.
USING THE ARMY LISTS To make a choice, look in the relevanl section in the army list and decide what unit you want to have in your army, how many models there will be in the unit, and which upgrades you want (if anyj. Remember that you cannot field models that are equipped with weapons and wargear that is not $hown on the model. Once this is done, subtract the points value of the unit from your total points and then go back and make another choice. Continue doing this until you have spent all your points.

Each army list entry consists of the following:
Note that unless a model or vehicle forms part of a squad or a squadron, it counis as a single choice from what is available to your army
Unit Name: The type of unit and any [imitations on the maximum number of choices you can make for it (eg 01).
STANDARD MISSIONS
Profile: These are the characteristics of that unit type, including its points cost. Where the unit has different warriors, there may be more than one profile.

Number/Squad: The number of models allowed in the unit, or the number of models you may take for one choice from (he force organisation chart. Often this is a variable amount, in which case it shows the minimum and maximum unit size. Weapons: These are the unit's standard weapons.

They are Ueated as Monstrous Creatures and therefore roll 2D6 for armour penetration and ignore theif opponents' armour saves in close combat. Invulnerable: Greater Daemons are unnatural crealures made from the very stufl of Chaos and are therefore very difficult to destroy. They are treated as being tnwlfiem&te- and therefore may make an armour save againsl any and all wounds ihey take, even those that would normally pierce their armour or triat allow no save to be made. Wings: The Bloodthirster and the Lord of Change have wings. This a Hows them to make a 12' assauli move, ignoring any intervening terrain between them and the target.

A Chaos Space Marine armed wiih a boller-f lamer or bolter-meltagun may choose to lire one ol the weapons in the shooting phase. The bolter may be fired any number of times, but the other weapon may only be lired once per battle. Note thai you may not choose to fire both weapons at the same dme. Combi-weapons - twin bolter: This special form ol combi-weapon 15 most commonly used by Chaos Space Marine Terminators and was tne precursor of the Space Marine's storm toner, it is treaied as a twm-lmked boiler as far as the rules are concerned. nce you've got an HQ unit and two Troops units, you have the start of a Chaos Space Marine army and can begin playing. Soon you'll want to expand your army by adding new units lo it, though the huge ctioice of models available can be a bit intimidaling.
If you get stuck, then it's a good idea to consider gelting one of each of the unit types not already included in your arnny. In other words get a Fast Attack unit : a Heavy Support unit and an Elite unit. In addition, I hind about getting a Rhino transport vehicle to make one of your Troop units more mobile. At this stage, you can be fairly certain that whatever you gel will prove useful. Dotted about this page, we've given a few recommendations as lo good starting unit choices. The army pictured above is made from (he core force shown oh page 33: along with some extra forces added using the ideas discussed above.
Before expanding your army even further you should play some games with it. As you play, you'll siarl I h ink ing to yourself how useful it would be to have Ihis or thai unit in your army, and these insights will help you to plan what to collect next. As an example, you could have a Khornate army lhal includes lots of Khorne Berzerkers. only has Khornate Daemons, and only includes characters bearing the Mark of Khorne. As well as reflecting an aspect of Ihe background, such an army would look distinclive (all those reds!) and have a distinctive style of play (very dose combat orienlated). Allhough themed armies take forward planning, they give you an opportunity to collect a really characterful army unlike any other.

Some players play games with un painted miniatures (shudder!), and (his is okay as a short term measure while you're getting the army ready, but prolonged use of unpainted miniatures will ge! you labelled as a tinboy and is something to be avoided. The thought of painting can be intimidating for new players, especially if they think they've got to try and match the standard set by the 'Eavy Metal team on these pages. The truth of the matter is, of course, that you don't have io match their standard, and it's possible to get a really good looking army by using straightforward methods. Just remember that you're painting an army to play games with each model doesn't have to be a. masterpiece! On the tabletop, the overall
impression of a unit of Chaos Space Marines counts for far more than how each individual model has been painted. If you're new to painting Citadel miniatures, the method below (describes a fairly straightforward way of painting Chaos Space Marines in the colours of the Iron Warriors Legion. By the time you've got a couple of dozen models painted up you'll find you start improving both how well and how quickly you paint, given a litlle patience and practice.
