INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Domingo Company is one of the well-known manufacturing company in Malaysia. This company not only a giant manufacturing company but also provide mechanical service as well. Domingo produce various type of product, from automotive to computer parts, one of them is a computer mouse. Recently the company has launch new design of the mouse which is the design is more complex yet futuristic, suitable with customer needs. The mouse has been sold to the market for about two months. The feedback from the customer is quite impressing and the sale of the mouse is increasing. With the demand from the customers, the production rate has been increase from day to day. The effect is, the product that has been produce has a lot of defect in terms of dimensional accuracy and precision. As the design of the mouse is quite complicated and curvy, the existing conventional machine that usually use to machine the product is no longer effective in cutting curvy part of the new design of the mouse. The existing conventional machine is human operated and need focus while doing machining. Increasing of production rate will make the operator tend to loss focus because of fatigue. Furthermore, human operated machine will lead to more parallax and human error because the process from clamping to measuring is done manually. The company need to overcome the problem encounter since it could lead to big loss to Domingo Company. One of the suggested way to overcome accuracy and precision problem is to change the existing conventional machine to Computer Numerical Control machine. From the study, there are two type of Computer Numerical Machine that can be found in the market which is 3-axis CNC machine and 5-axis CNC machine. The distinction between these two types of machine will be discuss in this writing.

CRITERIA There are several criteria that have been considered to find out the best choice between two types of Computer Numerical Control (CNC). The criteria are as mentioned below: 2.1 2.2 2.3

4.1 Specifications There are two type of CNC machine that we recommended for the company to purchase to replace with the conventional machine. The 3 axis CNC machine which is DMU

40 eVo and DMU 60 eVo for the 5 axis CNC machine. For the DMU 40 eVo, The DMU 40 eVo linear is the extension of the successful DMU eVo product line. Special feature is the revolutionary design of the X- and Y axes, which are now arranged as Gantry. The short distance of the guide ways guarantees an extremely high and constant rigidity over the whole working area. The optimized Gantry offers a considerably improved accessibility also from the side compared to the classic Gantry design. The accessibility to the working area is still guaranteed, even if the machine is equipped with an automation. Due to the new concept the space requirement is being reduced and the working area is being enlarged at the same time. The well-proven swivel rotary table has been retained and strengthened and allows now a loading weight of 250 kg. The table is also being offered as torque table for the mill- turntechnology. In the standard version the DMU 40 eVo has ball screws with 50 m/min rapid traverse and is also available as dynamic version with linear drives in X and Y axis with a rapid traverse of 80 m/min. The spindle speeds range from 14,000 to 24,000 rpm. The optional 2-fold pallet changer convinces with a low space requirement, short changing times and high workpiece weights. The DMU 60 eVo linear succeeds the DMU 50 eVo linear and continues the successful product line. The concept has been re-designed and improved on essential features. Special feature is the revolutionary design of the X- and Y axis, which are now arranged as Gantry. The short distance of the guide ways guarantees an extremely high and constant rigidity over the whole working area. The optimized Gantry offers a considerably improved accessibility also from the side compared to the classic Gantry design. The accessibility to the working area is still guaranteed, even if the machine is equipped with an automation. 4.2 Cost The price for DMU eVo 40 is RM 999 980 for the 3 axis CNC machine which include warranty for 5 years, the installation fee, safety wires, installation templates, setup documentation, setup CD-ROM,SD memory card and 3D drive technology with DMG ERGO Controlavailable with Heidenhain iTNC 530 or Siemens 840D solutionline. On the other hand, the price of DMU eVo 60 is RM 1 184 500. The purchase will include the installation fee, safety wires, installation templates, setup documentation, setup CD-ROM and SD memory card. By referring to the company budget, which is about RM 5 000 000 we can purchase 5 units of CNC DMU eVo 40 compared to DMU eVo 60. We can purchase only 4 units only. CONCLUSION

The conclusion is, there are some great differences between DMU 40 eVo and DMU 60 eVo. In term of performance valuation, clearly DMU 60 eVo is better than DMU 40 eVo because of its advanced axis rotation which is A-axis and B-axis rotary that enable the machine to produce complex part. DMU 60 eVo production unit is also greater than DMU 40 eVo because of its time consuming for a product finish is faster by 70,000 unit compared to 50,000 unit per day. Meanwhile the comparison between both machine sizes, DMU 60 eVo working area for X/Y/Z – axis is 23.6/19.7/19.7 inches which is wider than DMU 40 eVo that working area for X/Y/Z – axis is 15.7/15.7/14.8 inches. By that means, DMU 60 eVo required larger space in production line and only suitable for large parts. However, as for the pricing term, DMU 40 eVo total cost is in range of RM 200,000 - RM 300,000 which is cheaper than DMU 60 eVo that cost nearly RM 500,000 - RM 600,000. Along with that to be mention is maintenance cost for both machine also must be considered. DMU 60 eVo have highly cost for its parts and jigs than DMU 40 eVo. In term of main drive machine specification which is AC motor spindle, drive power, torque, and drive performance viewed, DMU 40 eVo have quite similar function to DMU 60 eVo. Besides that, the advantage of DMU 40 eVo is it provides specialize jig for the small part production.

RECOMMENDATION

Based on the conclusion that have been made, it is recommended that the DMU 40 eVo is more suitable for replacing the company’s current machine compared to DMU 60 eVo. The 3 axis CNC machine fulfil the requirement in order to improve and solve the accuracy and precision problem within the budget provided. This investment in CNC machine has the longest benefit in term of time and the quality for company even though the process to solve the problem takes sometimes.
