C. From 4.30 p.m. D. Sometime after 4.30 p.m. Passage 2 Orang‐utans “require less food than humans, pound‐for‐pound,” lead author Herman Pontzer said. When they do eat orang‐utans nibble mostly on ripe fruit, along with smaller portions of leaves and seed. Even in captivity, this diet doesn’t diminish an orang‐utan’s get‐up‐and‐go. “They wake up early, after a long night’s sleep,” explained Pontzer, an assistant professor of anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. “Then they spend the day socializing, exploring their indoor or outdoor enclosures. They also regularly engage in games with researchers”. According to a study, published in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, these activities of the orangutan’s, taken together add up to the same level of exercise performed by humans in physically demanding agricultural lifestyles. In the wild, orang‐utans live in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra where food availability is highly variable and unpredictable, Pontzer added. Like fresh fruit from the garden, the pickings are often feast or famine. “But the trade‐off,” he added, “is that low‐energy throughout means less energy is available to do things like grow and reproduce. So orang‐utans grow slowly and reproduce slowly, which is evolutionarily risky because an orang‐utan might die before it passes on its genes.” Human mothers can have a child every two to four years, but orang‐utans in the wild only reproduce every seven to eight years. Orang‐utans are highly endangered, with many lost due to human activities such as logging, mining and the illegal pet trade. Pontzer hopes the study will highlight “how much information we lose about our closest relatives and our own evolutionary history if we let them go extinct.” 30. Orang‐utans eat _____ humans do. A. less than B. more than C. the same amount as D. nearly as much as 31. According to Pontzer, orang‐utans are A. lazy. B. friendly. C. slow. D. energetic. 32. According to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, A. orang‐utans and farmers do the same amount of physical activity. B. orang‐utans do the same exercises as farmers. C. orang‐utans and farmers work very hard. D. orang‐utans and farmers have similar lifestyles.
33. Orang‐utans grow slowly and reproduce slowly because they A. don’t get sufficient food. B. don’t get fresh fruit from the garden.

C. a lot of information about our evolution will be lost. D. he wishes to study them in the wild. 35. Select the statement that is NOT TRUE. A. B. C. D.
The orang‐utan reproductive cycle is slow. Orang‐utans have low energy levels. All orang‐utans may not reproduce. Orang‐utans give birth every four years.
Passage 3
“Most of my time is spent in my room, French‐plaiting other girls’ hair,” said Rachael Burford, centre player in the England women’s rugby team. Burford, and her braided friends then go out on the rugby pitch where, if you caught any of the recent World Cup, you will have noticed that the women are just as fearless as their male counterparts. “It has got to the point now when I feel a bit weird if I don’t do someone’s hair before a game,” said Burford. “Some of the girls look really tough with their hair plaited, so it’s also a psychological thing — a victorious thing.” Sadly, victory wasn’t tied up in those braids — the team lost to New Zealand in the September 5 final — but many of the players looked fierce, like warrior women going into battle. “Plaits are the earliest of hairstyles because before haircutting and hairdressing, people obviously had long hair and plaits were the simplest way of keeping it out of the way,” says fashion historian Caroline Cox. For that reason, she says, we associate plaits with both women and men, and particularly those who are involved in athletic pursuits, such as war. Think of Legolas in “The Lord of the Rings”, or the super strong Obelix in the “Asterix” cartoons. “For women, Boudicca or Valkyrie plaits seem to enhance their ferocity,” says Cox. “It was a practical hairstyle until we get to the 19th century, when it begins to be associated with female children. Even now, plaits on the whole have the meaning of the youthful schoolgirl.” Not an image you will associate with England’s nearly victorious rugby team.

D. were well appreciated. 38. Burford feels that whenever she plaits her friends’ hair, they will _____ the match. A. win B. lose C. draw D. play 39. In paragraph 2, the phrase ‘a psychological thing’ refers to A. plaiting her friends’ hair. B. feeling confident with plaited hair. C. playing a mind game. D. Burford’s feeling of weirdness. 40. According to the passage, which of these statements is true? A. Modern athletes plait their hair. B. Both men and women used to plait their hair in olden days. C. Plaiting and victory are synonymous in athletics. D. Plaiting was a convenient hairstyle for athletes.

Matsupaa - The Magic Remains Dawn has not yet broken over the horizon, but Rosita is crossing the border. Rosita is a Matsu woman. Her land, Matsupaa, lies partly in Ghana, and partly in Congo. Matsupaa has its own flag, language, traditions and festivals, but it is divided by an international border. Rosita crosses the border frequently to get from one part of her country to another, but she needs special visa every time and it sometimes takes her forever to reach another part of her own country. Today Rosita is making the crossing from her village Onista to the capital city Maru to attend the annual Matsupaa Kingdom Day. There will be a carnival, and the atmosphere is likely to be raucous and mad as most carnivals are. People in their ancestral costume of large billowing gowns, silver plated shirts and clanging, chunky bracelets move around noisily. Youngsters usually borrow their grandparents’ clothes! One of Matsupaa’s celebrity citizens is Mopar Magutsu. He is active in a movement to save Matsu cultural identity. More and more young people are leaving Matsupaa for the west and Mopar wants to prevent his culture from dying out. He holds a lot of cultural programmes to initiate the young into the rich and colourful Matsu past. The future is bright only when we know the past with pride - is Mopar’s firm belief. SECTION-II : READING READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Among the old Tedas, it was customary for certain tribesmen to dress in the skins of the beasts they had slain, and thus to give themselves a fearsome air of brutality, which was calculated to strike dread into the hearts of their foes. Of course, it’s a fair guess that a cheetah or bison skin would make a warm, comfortable outer coat for a man whose life was in the most brutal of conditions atop ridges. Many legends tell of these cavemen-like soldiers, also known as Badangas, and folklore has it that they were physically transformed into the beasts whose skins they wore. The most common animals that the warriors were transformed into were the bull-tiger and leopard. Rumours suggest that the skins carried the power of the beasts and, when worn, turned the wearer into that animal at the height of its capabilities. The fact is that no one has ever set sight on a Badanga in the flesh. The Badanga was an object of sheer horror, as his life’s object was to challenge quiet villagers to a duel. As the then law of the land stood in the Teda tribe, a man who declined to accept a challenge from a Badanga forfeited all his worldly possessions, even his wife, over to the hands of his challenger. Therefore, the Badanga had any man he challenged at his mercy. If the Badanga slew him, the farmer’s possessions became his, and if the poor fellow declined to fight, he lost all legal right to his property anyway. A Badanga would invite himself to any feast and contribute to the hilarity of the entertainment by killing in gory fashion any merrymaker who displeased him. He might even single one out to murder for no other reason than to practice his combat skills. It is not difficult to imagine that popular superstition went along with the popular dread of these animal-skinned aggressors, and that they were believed to be filled with the force, as they certainly were with the ferocity, of the beasts whose skins they wore. In the unlikely event of a villager slaying a Badanga warrior, he was revered as a divine saviour and had a temple devoted to him. It wasn’t easy. Fire merely singed, a scythe landed a mere scratch, and a venomous spear just put him to sleep- what it took was a club made of the betel tree stump to fell this fiery warrior. Of course, it comes as no surprise that no one has heard of one such village victory yet. Does the belligerent Badanga have only a phantasmal existence? Copyright©2015. READING FOR QUESTIONS 30 TO 34, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.
Drums make up one more family of instruments. Drums are made by stretching an animal hide over a bowl or open cylinder.
FAMILIES OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Have you ever thought about how many ways there are to make musical sounds? You can make music with your own body. You can sing, clap, or snap your fingers. Musical instruments allow us to make music beyond what our bodies are capable of. Bands and orchestras are made up of families, or groups, of musical instruments. Each family of instruments adds something unique to the music.
People play drums by hitting the hide with a stick. Drums help keep the beat in a band or orchestra. Drums can be tuned to different tone levels. This is done by stretching or loosening the drum’s hide covering. Another family of musical instruments is the percussion group. Drums are often thought of as percussion. But true percussion instruments are made from a solid material that is shaken, struck, or scraped. Rattles, bells, and gongs are percussion instruments. A xylophone is a more complicated percussion instrument. It has keys that are struck with a hammer. Each key sounds a different pitch or tone level.
Strings are one family of musical instruments. You are probably familiar with some of these instruments. A guitar has strings. Guitar players make music by plucking the strings with their fingers. A violin has strings too, but a violin player uses a bow to make music. Bowing an instrument means sliding or scraping a bow over the strings. A bow is a smooth tool that makes the strings vibrate and produce sound.
The number and range of musical instruments is amazing. The next time you hear - or play in - a band or orchestra, listen carefully to the richness and variety of sounds.
Wind instruments make up another musical family. Wind instruments produce sound by moving columns of air. You may know someone who plays a flute. The flute is a tube shaped wind instrument. A flute player makes music by blowing air over a hole in the tube. Have you ever seen a clarinet? It is a wind instrument too. Clarinet players blow on a reed in the mouthpiece. The reed vibrates and sets the air inside the clarinet tube in motion. Trumpets, trombones, and French horns are other wind instruments, but they don’t have reeds.

As an adult, Rosa usually walked miles to and from work. She avoided taking the local bus. She didn’t like it that black people had to use a rear door and sit at the back of the bus. She also didn’t like the fact that she was required to give up her seat to a white person when the bus was crowded. Rosa chose to walk up flights of stairs in buildings instead of riding an elevator marked ‘blacks only’. She would go thirsty rather than drink from a ‘black only’ drinking fountain to quench her thirst.

She was arrested and fined 14 dollars. Rosa refused to pay the fine. Members of the AfricanAmerican community organized a boycott of the bus company. They wanted to protest the treatment they received.
FOR QUESTIONS 35 TO 39, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.
The boycott lasted 381 days. It led to the Supreme Court of the United States becoming involved. The Supreme Court ruled that blacks could sit anywhere on a bus or train. African-Americans no longer had to give up their seats to white passengers. Rosa’s bus ride that day certainly changed history.
A BUS RIDE INTO HISTORY In 1955, an African-American woman was tired after a hard day at work as a seamstress. When a white man told her to give up her bus seat so he could sit down, she refused. The woman was arrested for what she did. Her name was Rosa Parks. Some people call her the ‘Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.’ Rosa Parks grew up in Alabama at a time when African-Americans were not treated the same as white Americans. She was not able to attend the same schools as white children. Her school didn’t even have any windows. It was a time when ‘Jim Crow’ laws separated the races. There were drinking fountains, restaurants, restrooms, and even elevators labelled ‘whites only’. When Rosa and her cousin went into a local store for a soda, the girls were told that the store wouldn’t serve them. They were asked to leave!
35. How is Rosa Parks remembered today?

A. adventures at sea
SEAFARING
B.
sailing as an occupation
Sailing is an Olympic sport today, but in Britain, in the past, seafaring was an important source of work and not just for sailors and fishermen. People all over Britain worked to make, equip and support military, commercial and fishing fleets. So, many people found work in construction and maintenance work related to the shipping industry.
C.
going to fairs
D. supporting fishermen
Ships needed to be supplied with sails, ropes and other essentials; warships needed cannon and gunpowder; sailors and passengers needed food and these requirements kept people in employment throughout the year. This is not the case so much today, at least not so widely, but the coast of Britain is, to this day, dotted with hundreds of marinas- places where recreational boats are kept for people who enjoy sailing. Britain has many maritime museums but the most impressive is the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, which showcases the nation’s rich nautical history. Further, British literature and art is full of evidence of the importance of seafaring in the country’s history and culture; Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and the novels of C. S. Foster and Patrick O’Brian effectively capture the people’s relationship with sailing. Example

FOR QUESTIONS 33 TO 36, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.
‘Computers that can detect and imitate human emotion may sound like science fiction, but they are already with us,’ said Dr Dylan Evans, a key Humanine project collaborator.
MACHINE RAGE You have spent the last 20 minutes talking to an automated call centre. A passionless, computerized voice drones out assurances and urges you to press yet another key. Your temper soars. Finally, you give up, shouting rude remarks. Or your friend becomes immersed, with increasing agitation, in a computer game. As his temper worsens, his performance declines until he ends up trashing the console in a fit of adolescent rage. Computer angst - now a universal feature of modern life - is an increasing phenomenon today. Fortunately, the days of the unfeeling machine will soon be over. Thanks to breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, psychology, electronics and other research fields, scientists are now creating computers and robots that can detect, and respond to, users’ feelings. The discoveries are being channelled by Humanine, a £6 million programme that has just been launched by the European Union to give Europe a lead in emotional computing. As a result, computers will soon detect our growing irritation at their behaviour and in turn generate more sympathetic, human-like messages or slow down the tempo of the games that they are running. Robots will be able to react in lifelike ways, though we may end up generating some unwelcome responses too.
33. What, according to the writer, is the problem with modern technology?
A. It does not function in the intended way. B. It tends to cause friction between family members. C. It can result in people losing self-control. D. It is impossible to achieve anything without technology.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 22 TO 26, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. We share not just jokes, laughter and our innermost secrets with our friends; we are also genetically similar to our friends. A US study published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences analyzed 1.5 million markers of gene variation from 1,932 people. The genetic makeup of pairs of unrelated friends was compared with pairs of unrelated strangers. Close friends shared about 1 percent of the same gene variants. In other words, unrelated friends had as much genetic similarity as fourth cousins or people who share great-great-great grandparents. Most people don’t even know who their fourth cousins are! Yet, we somehow, among a myriad of possibilities, manage to select as friends, the people, who resemble our kin. Friends are most similar in genes that affect the sense of smell and most different in genes that control immunity or ability to protect against diseases. A difference in immune system genes is also seen in spouses and may have an evolutionary explanationhaving the genes to fight different infections reduces the risk of epidemics or spread of diseases. The social aspect may explain why human evolution appears to have progressed faster in the last 30,000 years. This gives us a deeper account of the origins of friendship. Not only do we form ties with people superficially like ourselves, but also with people, who are like us on a deep genetic level.

READING FOR QUESTIONS 22 TO 26, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. On September 9, 2014, Google commemorated the 186th birth anniversary of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) the Russian author and philosopher, with a slide show showcasing his greatest works. One of the giants of Russian literature, he wrote his first great novel, War and Peace in the 1860s. Generally, thought to be one of the greatest novels ever written, remarkable for its dramatic breadth and unity, its vast canvas includes 580 characters, many historical, others fictional. In 1873, Tolstoy set to work on the second of his best known novels, Anna Karenina. He continued to write fiction throughout the 1880s and 1890s. His fiction consistently attempts to convey realistically the Russian society in which he lived. Anna Karenina (1877) tells parallel stories of an adulterous woman trapped by the conventions and falsities of society and of a philosophical landowner, who works alongside the peasants in the fields and seeks to reform their lives. Tolstoy not only drew from his life experiences, but also created characters in his own image, such as Pierre and Prince Andrei in War and Peace, and Levin in Anna Karenina. Tolstoy served as a second lieutenant in an artillery regiment during the Crimean war. His experiences in battle helped stir his subsequent pacifism, and gave him material for a realistic depiction of the horrors of war, in his later work. His contemporaries paid him lofty tributes. Dostoevsky thought him the greatest of all living novelists. Gustave Flaubert, on reading a translation of War and Peace, exclaimed, “What an artist and what a psychologist”. Later critics and novelists continue to bear testament to Tolstoy’s art. Virginia Woolf declared him to be the greatest of all novelists. James Joyce noted that “He is never dull, never stupid, never pedantic, never theatrical!” Thomas Mann wrote of Tolstoy’s seemingly guileless artistry. “Seldom did art work so much like nature.” Such sentiments were shared by Proust, Faulkner and Nabokov. The latter heaped superlatives upon Anna Karenina; he questioned, however, the reputation of “War and Peace”. In 1908, Tolstoy wrote ‘A Letter to a Hindu,’ outlining his belief in non-violence, as a means for India to gain independence from British colonial rule. In 1909, Gandhi wrote to the famous writer, and in his autobiography, acknowledged Tolstoy as “the greatest apostle of non-violence that the present age has produced.”

FOR QUESTIONS 27 TO 31, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Lady boss assigns stringent deadlines to her team. Then she goes home, cooks several dishes for dinner and phones the husband asking him to come home soon. The husband has a lot of work to finish because he happens to be in a team where the boss has cracked the whip. Of course, his boss is the wife and this is the new India where women are smart, powerful and accomplished and husbands don’t have to tussle with their egos to report to their wives, at work. The Airtel ad, whose plot line is described above, should have warmed our hearts, but it has not. Feminists are frothing at the mouth because the Ad depicts that even successful career women have to eventually conform to traditional roles. To my mind, this is a truly blinkered view. Liberal attitudes towards women imply that they should be free to do whatever they like. In this case, here was a successful and smart woman who likes to cook. And when she’s finished the cooking, she would like her husband to be home so they could eat together. What is regressive about that? A lot has changed for the urban Indian women in the last year-and-a-half. Safety and equality have come to the forefront of discussions. While a lot remains to be done, it is not just the glass half –full view that things are changing for the better. Yet, these knee-jerk reactions to what constitutes women’s roles are mindless hysteria, not measured analysis. It isn’t feminism to demand that women only do what they haven’t traditionally done. It is feminism to demand that women be able to choose what they want to do- whether it is pulling an all-nighter at work, heading out for a drink and a dance, tending to a sick child at home or cooking a meal for the family. Sometimes this requires superhuman skills in juggling schedules and planning ahead. Often, some of it is near impossible. Yet, the sheer fact that the woman is doing something because she chooses to is all the evidence of liberation one needs. It’s cutting the nose to spite the face to suggest that a successful career woman should not be allowed to go home and indulge in an activity she enjoys. Even if it happens to be playing the role of a ‘traditional’ wife.
