The brilliant strokes of colour symbolize a person who is looking back at an exciting lifetime of accomplishments!” At that moment, Mr. G.V. Reddy, the gallery curator, entered the room. “Isn’t it great?” he asked with a big smile on his face. “My three year old did that this morning. He says it’s a maze. I think it’s amazing!” 21. Without spit in our mouths, we would have a hard time talking and would find it even harder to swallow. But for some animals, spit works better after it has left the mouth. Some animals are experts at surviving because they are expert spitters. Llamas are animals who seem to like their personal space. A llama that feels threatened or annoyed will spit slimy gobs at you to get you to leave it alone. Sometimes llamas even spit on each other to steal food! This trick usually works, because llama spit includes food from the llama’s stomach, and it can be quite smelly. When a llama spits on another animal, the animal usually loses its appetite and walks away, leaving its food behind. Spitting cobras are also known for their expert aim. These snakes spray poisonous venom from their fangs to protect themselves. Scientists believe that these snakes actually aim for the eyes! When the cobra’s venom gets into the eyes of an animal, the venom causes terrible pain, and even blindness. This gives the snake plenty of time to get away. Spitting is considered to be rude behavior in people. But for some animals, spitting can be a smart way to get lunch –or a clever way to avoid becoming lunch! 29. A llama might choose to spit on you because it wishes A. to protect itself. B. not to become lunch. C. to steal food. D. to lose its appetite. 30. Snakes spray venom into the eyes of an animal A. to get time to escape. B. to kill the animal. C. to practise their aim. D. to show their annoyance.

Oh, why’s that? He wants an informal atmosphere, so, we’re to call him Jim, not to address him
Noori
as Mr. Perkins. Oh, and he’s changed my job title. I’m not a ‘secretary’ anymore; I’m a ‘personal assistant’.
Samanta
Have you been promoted?
Noori
Oh, no- it’s the same job with a different name. He’s got a thing about positive words. We mustn’t use the word ‘problem’, but say ‘positive challenge’ instead. Nothing must be called a ‘failure’, it’s just an ‘improvement opportunity’. You know what - he got angry when I mentioned that the company made a loss last year. As the final credits rolled on the TV screen, he looked at the time. Gosh, it was nearly midnight. His tired eyes closed. The door bell rang loudly. His hair stood on end. The vibration of giant footsteps was drawing near. His heart hammered loudly and his heart leapt to his mouth. Frantically, he tried to hide under the stairs. Ouch! SECTION-II : READING READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. For some time now, I have been trying to decide who makes the world’s best ice cream. I have narrowed my list down to four manufacturers : Bobbins Naturals, Wall’s, Wunderburst or Marshal. Let’s start with Bobbins. They make very good ice cream. They have lots and lots of yummy flavours, but that’s really not important - because I always get coffee flavour. They make the best coffee ice cream in the world. I’ve never drunk real hot coffee, but people tell me that Bobbins’ coffee ice cream tastes just like the real thing. Besides, Bobbins uses all natural ingredients to make their ice cream which is a really good idea. Second, there is Wall’s. Wall’s makes excellent ice cream. Like Bobbins, Wall’s uses natural ingredients. But they only make three different flavours—strawberry, vanilla, and choconut—but they make them really creamy and fruity. Especially the strawberry. Every bite of it reminds me of the strawberries that I used to eat at my gran’s house. The vanilla is wonderful. It is very smooth and has a fresh, creamy flavour. But the choconut is the best. It is made with real cocoa beans from Columbia.
Copyright©2015. Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF)
5
3rd IEO - SET B I didn’t know where Columbia is, so I looked for it on a map. I discovered that it is in South America! That’s a long way to go to get cocoa, so it must be good. I would say that the only drawback to Wall’s ice cream is that they only make three different flavours. Third, we have Wunderburst. Wunderburst ice cream is okay. They don’t have many good flavours. Actually, the only Wunderburst flavour I like is Caramel. It is vanilla with little chunks of toffee in it. As you eat the ice cream, you can crunch through the toffee. That’s pretty fun. Finally, there is Marshal. Marshal ice cream is mediocre. The only good thing about Marshal is that it is relatively inexpensive. You can buy a whole carton of Marshal ice cream for ` 50.00. That’s only my two - week allowance. 31. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
(A) Strawberry, Vanilla, Choconut, and Toffee

35. The author likes Wunderburst ice cream because it ______.
(A) is relatively inexpensive

READING FOR QUESTIONS 20 TO 24, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS. Japan is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the land of the rising sun because of the characters that make up its name mean ‘sun-origin’. It is technologically very advanced and is very famous for Shinkansen. In English, they are known as ‘bullet trains’. However, the literal translation means new trunk line. Bullet trains are high speed passenger rail trains. The term ‘bullet’ is due to the pointed nose of the train that is like that of a bullet along with its sleek and aerodynamic appearance. These trains are operated by Japan Railways. Running at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, the Shinkansen is known for punctuality, comfort, safety and efficiency. There are two types of coaches – Ordinary and the Green car. Both have comfortable chairs facing forward with a generous amount of foot space, although the Green car is more comfortable and offers more leg room. The network consists of multiple lines which have been exclusively built for and used only by the Shinkansen trains. However, the Shinkansen has multiple train categories ranging from the fastest that stop only at major stations to the slowest that stop at every station. The original service began in 1964, connecting the cities of Tokyo and Osaka. The trains travelled at approximately 125 miles per hour (200 kilometres per hour) making the journey time between the two cities at about 2.5 hours.
Over six billion passengers have travelled on the railway since 1964 with no major accidents. The success of these trains led to further development of rail in other European and Asian countries. Two of the more notable services are Alta Velocidad Española (AVE) and Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV) from Spain and France respectively. TGV has an extensive network and has carried in excess of 1.3 billion passengers since the service began in 1981. The AVE started 11 years later and is planning an expansion which would create a larger network than the French line. Riding in a bullet train feels like gliding through air. Even though they travel at such high speeds, the ride is smooth and peaceful. It is a great system and has benefited people by reducing the time of travel. However, there is a downside to this. Travelling by bullet trains is quite expensive. A ticket to travel to another city could cost you almost as much as an air ticket. However, train stations are located in the middle of a city, compared to airports that are usually on the outskirts, making it more convenient and providing value for money. Example Why is Shinkansen known as ‘bullet train’ in English? A. Because the train is a bullet. B. Because the front of the train has a pointed nose.
C. Because of its aerodynamic appearance. D. Because of its sleek appearance.

Then out of the harbour, With that three-cornered fin Shearing without a bubble the water Lithely, Leisurely, He swam— That strange fish, Tubular, tapered, smoke-blue, Part vulture, part wolf, Part neither—for his blood was cold. READING FOR QUESTIONS 20 TO 24, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Is your television a robot? What about the washing machine? And your car? Look around your house. Can you find some more? According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, a robot is ‘any automatically operated machine that replaces human effort, though it may not resemble human beings in appearance or perform functions in a human like manner.’ But are Robots really a new invention? Many ancient myths include artificial people, such as the mechanical servants built by the Greek god Hephaestus, the clay golems of Jewish legend and clay giants of Norse legend. In the third century, in ancient China, a mechanical engineer Yan Shi presented the Chinese Emperor with a life-size, human-shaped mechanical figure made of leather, wood and artificial organs. In the fifth century, Greek mathematician Archytas of Tarentum, a pal of Plato’s, built a mechanical bird driven by a jet of steam or compressed air. It is considered to be history’s first robot. The word ‘Robot’ originates from the Czech word robota, meaning ‘drudgery’. In 1921, robots first appeared in a play where the machines rise up and kill their creators, leaving a lone survivor. The first real robot was made in 1961. It was a giant arm called Unimate and was used to help make cars. The first death due to a robot occurred in 1981, when a robotic arm crushed a Japanese factory worker. These days, robots are used widely in industries and by the army. In some cases, the use of robots has resulted in unemployment and in some cases it has helped to reduce the number of casualties. Robots are also used for exploration purposes for example: they are used to
explore dangerous places like volcanoes. They are even sent to space to survey Mars and the moon. So, robots are very useful to man as they help in performing day-to-day mundane activities. Since the instructions are already built-in, they make no mistakes. They don’t get tired and never complain unless they have been programmed to. But they should be used wisely else they may cause more harm than help. Example 20.
Where does the word ‘Robot’ come from? A. A Czech word B. Japan C. Ancient myths D. Encyclopaedia Britannica Choose a title for the text. A. Robots B. Myths about Robots C. Robot revolution D. History of Robots

In a more distant place I glimpsed his face, And bowed instinctively; Starting he bowed to me, Bowed simultaneously, and passed along. Next, in a foreign land I grasped his hand, And had a social chat, About this thing and that, As I had known him well a thousand years. Late in a wilderness I shared his mess, For he had hardships seen, And I a wanderer been; He was my bosom friend, and I was his. READING FOR QUESTIONS 28 TO 33, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt is known for its Sphinx and Pyramids. However, it is also gaining popularity about the kind of leadership structure that it followed. Egyptian economy was based on agriculture and therefore the floods would cause great havoc in the country. The most powerful people in the country in this kind of scenario were not the king and queen, but the priests. They conducted the most elaborate ceremonies, either to pray for rains, or to stop floods. The decorative and extravagant rituals were conducted by the priests to gain immense power over the common man. They also used several different kinds of myths and symbols to mystify the religion. A better way for the people of Egypt would have been to have measuring devices to know the fall and rise of the river Nile that affected their lives to such an extent.
