Yet Ram was pretty sure that he did not want to keep him anymore. Joey reminded him too much of his grandmother. Every time his grandmother was angry with someone she would call them “silly old fool”. Joey learnt this and repeated it even months after she died. But now Ram could no longer laugh when Joey did that. Instead, each time Joey called it aloud, he found his eyes filling with tears. That‛s how Joey came to be with Mala. Mala loved Joey very much. She never got bored listening to him. He was even better than a parrot. He could repeat many words in English and some words in Hindi and he imitated a few funny sounds! What Mala loved best was how he imitated Ram‛s loud laugh. But there was a problem. When visitors came Joey called out loudly ‘silly old fool‛. Poor Amma had to explain to everyone that they did not teach him to say that and the worst part was that Joey would cock his head to one side and laugh loudly while Amma said that!

Now there is no Joey to tease Mala and imitate funny sounds and even Amma finds the house too quiet without him. 21. But they are different from each other too. Oceans are enormous when compared to seas: they contain more water than seas. There is really only one big ocean that is divided into five – the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean and Arctic Ocean. But there are dozens of seas in the world. A sea is surrounded by land on all or most sides. Because of this, they are much shallower than oceans. It is possible for a large variety of plants and animals to grow on a sea bed. But ocean beds are much deeper than seas and since no sunlight reaches there it can support only very simple life forms like bacteria.

SECTION-II : Reading READ THE LETTER AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Hi Riya, It was very nice to receive a letter from you. I’m always happy to hear from you. Yesterday when the postman came to deliver the letter, first I thought it must be for my dad. But when I read my name on it I got very excited and opened the letter immediately. Luckily I was at home because normally on Thursday evenings I go for my swimming lessons, but yesterday our coach was exhausted after a competition so our class got cancelled. You know we made some changes in our house. Last week it was a big event for our family because we bought an orange book rack and a red chair for my room. The book rack was for 2500 rupees and the chair, I think was for 1500 rupees. My dad brought a small wooden bedside table for his room. He did not pay anything for it because the shopkeeper gave it free with the bed my parents bought for 7000 rupees. I wanted a book rack for my room for a long time and last Wednesday my parents and I went shopping. On Tuesday my dad told me that we will go shopping, because the next day was my dad’s birthday. All the furniture was delivered to my house on Saturday. It was too heavy to carry all the furniture upstairs and it took us an hour and four men to carry it upstairs. I was completely exhausted by the end of the day. Now my room looks very colourful and tidy and I’m very happy. I will ask my parents to take a photograph of the room and I will send it to you in my next letter. I wish you could come and see my room. Please write to me soon. Bye Isabel Copyright©2015. and when I was young I always liked visiting zoos. It was that didn’t live around my house. Around my house I could but not zebras or lions. I could see dogs and pigs, but not loved spending my weekends at the zoo learning about the
One day I learned there was an animal shelter near my uncle’s house. It wasn’t a regular shelter. The ones I’d been to before were places where you could adopt dogs, cats and sometimes even a pot-bellied pig or goat. This place had lions, tigers and bears, so I was really keen to go there immediately. As I arrived, I was surprised because I heard the lions from the parking lot. The place was small, but nicely kept. It was clean and the volunteers working at the entry were very helpful. My family and I toured the place at our own pace, examining the cages and habitats the animals lived in. I was immediately struck by the differences between this place and a normal zoo. Zoos usually have beautiful habitats set up for each animal, but you can’t get near the animals at all. At this shelter, I was almost close enough to reach out and touch the animals, even though there were two fences between the animals and I. There weren’t as many people, either, so it seemed like a more personal experience. The paths were narrow and covered with trees that made the animals feel more at home and provided them shade. It was interesting to stare a lion in the eyes when you could almost reach out and touch it. It was fun to watch the bears pace back and forth and wiggle their lips at you with great expressions. They were silly creatures. There were leopards lazing in the midday heat and monkeys grooming themselves. The best part about the place was the stories. The animals had a story posted up on the sides of their cages. Each had been rescued from abuse or taken when they were no longer wanted. These were sad stories with a happy ending. Someone at this shelter had worked hard to take care of the animals, and now I could enjoy meeting them and learn from them. When it was finally time to go, we all thanked the volunteers and made a donation of 500 rupees. Shelters always need money, food for the animals and help. It made us feel good to help out any way we could for the care of the animals. It was a great place, and I couldn’t wait to return to it. 13. reading FOR QUESTIONS 15 TO 21, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Popcorn, also known as popping corn, is a special variety of corn (Zea mays everta). Each kernel, in other words corn seed, contains a tiny drop of water. When it is heated, the water expands causing the seed to explode and flip inside out. In the US popcorn is mostly grown in Nebraska, Indiana and now increasingly in Texas. Native Americans first discovered popcorn thousands of years ago in Mexico. It was popped in China during the Song Dynasty as well as in Sumatra and India long before Columbus reached America. In 1948 and 1950, anthropologist Herbert Dick and botanist Earle Smith discovered ears of popcorn in Mexico. The size varied from a few millimeters to about two inches and was carbon dated to be about 5,600 years old. Hernando Cortes invaded Mexico in 1519 and first saw popcorn when he met the Aztecs. Aztecs used popcorn as food and decoration on headdresses, necklaces and ornaments. Around 1612, French explorers around the Great Lakes met Iroquois who used heated sand in a pottery vessel to make popcorn. Colonial housewives served popcorn with sugar and cream for breakfast. Some colonists used a cylinder of thin sheet-iron that revolved on an axle in front of the fireplace to make popped corn. In 1885, Charles Cretors of Chicago, Illinois, invented the first popcorn machine. Street vendors were soon pushing steam or gas-powered poppers through fairs, parks, and expositions. Today much of the popcorn you buy at movies and fairs is popped in machines manufactured by the Cretors family. Americans eat more than 33 billion kilograms of popcorn a year, an average of 30 kilograms per person per year. As the result of an elementary school project, popcorn became the official state snack food of Illinois. January 19 is National Popcorn Day, and October is National Popcorn Month. 15. reading FOR QUESTIONS 14 TO 20, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Ostrich The flightless ostrich is the world’s largest bird. They roam in the African savanna and desert lands, and get most of their water from the plants they eat. Though they cannot fly, ostriches are strong runners. They can run up to 43 miles (70 kilometers) an hour. They may use their wings as “rudders” to help them change direction, while running. An ostrich’s powerful, long legs can cover 10 to 16 feet (3 to 5 meters) in a single stride. These legs can also be dreadful weapons. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or other carnivorous animals. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw. Ostriches live in small herds that typically contain less than a dozen birds. All the hens of a herd place their eggs in one nest, each one of which weighs as much as two dozen chicken eggs. The hen and the male, both take turns looking after the giant eggs. Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. The old saying probably originates due to the bird’s defensive behaviour.

At the approach of trouble, ostriches will lie low and press their long necks to the ground in an attempt to become less visible. Their feathers blend well with sandy soil and, from a distance, give the appearance that they have buried their heads in the sand. reading FOR QUESTIONS 14 TO 20, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. Mongoose Mongooses are primarily found in Africa. They cover most of the continent. Some species occupy parts of southern Asia and the Iberian Peninsula. They are generally terrestrial mammals, but some are semi-aquatic, and others are at home in the treetops. Ranging in size from the 7-inch-long (18-centimetre-long) dwarf mongoose to the 2-foot-long (60-centimetre-long) Egyptian mongoose; these sleek mammals have long bodies with short legs and long snouts. They normally have brown or grey fur, and a number of species have striped coats or ringed tails. Mongooses live in burrows and are predators, feeding on small animals such as rodents, birds, reptiles, frogs, insects and worms. Some species supplement their diet with fruits, nuts and seeds. Creative hunters, mongooses are known to break open the birds’ eggs by throwing them with their paws toward a hard object. Famously, some species of mongoose will boldly attack venomous snakes such as cobras. The most celebrated of these is Rudyard Kipling’s fictional Rikki-tikki-tavi, based on an ancient fable and included in The Jungle Book. In the 1800s, mongooses were introduced to several islands in Hawaii and the West Indies in order to control the rodent populations on sugarcane plantations. Today, this effort has come back to haunt these islands as mongooses threaten the survival of various native species, particularly birds. However, in their natural environments mongooses are currently threatened themselves due to habitat loss. 14. The Egyptian mongoose is
