READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. A FREE DAY Bobby had to stay home from school yesterday as he had a bad cold. He sat at the window of their first floor apartment, looking out at the street below. It was six-thirty in the morning and there was not much traffic at this time. He could see a man with a shopping bag across the road, hurrying along in a brisk manner. Trying to walk faster than the man were two children in uniform carrying heavy school bags. Bobby looked forward to doing many nice things on this free day. He wanted to make a card for his sister’s birthday and play with his collection of toy cars, but the scene below was too interesting to miss! He watched the people at the bus stop. Mr Khan was speaking to someone on his phone while Mrs Khan chatted with an old lady standing nearby. A tall thin man was leaning against the lamp post while his friend squatted beside him. Three girls held hands while they crossed the road. Their mother watched anxiously, standing at the gate of their house on this side. The games began in 776 BC in Olympus in Ancient Greece. The games were held in honour of the Greek God Zeus and were a series of competitions. They were held every four years and came to be known as Olympiad. They were discontinued around 400 AD.

In 1896, Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman revived the Games and the first competition was organised in Athens.

The Olympic flame has been a symbol of the Games since 1928 and torchbearers are selected from different countries. Athletes from Greece are always the first to enter the stadium for the parade, acknowledging the country’s historical association with the Games. The five ring Olympic symbol represents the world’s five continents.

reading FOR QUESTIONS 14 TO 20, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. BLUE WHALES

Did you know that the largest animal to have ever lived still roams the Earth today? Yes, blue whales are so big that even the biggest dinosaur that ever lived doesn’t come close in size. Blue whales can be found in every ocean of the world, including the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian oceans, and they are simply gigantic! Blue whales generally grow between 80 to 90 feet long, but there have been reports of lengths of 110 feet. That is longer than three school buses put together! Blue whales can weigh from anywhere between 150 to 170 tons. In fact, just their tongues alone weigh more than an elephant! A blue whale heart is of the size of a small car and the main blood vessel is so big that a human can crawl through it. The heart needs to be that size because of the 10 tons of blood that have to be pumped around the blue whale’s enormous body. Even a baby blue whale, which is called a calf, is of the size of an elephant when it is born. Blue whales are solitary animals and usually swim alone or in pairs, although they do sometimes come together in small groups called pods. Despite their size, blue whales do not eat sharks or other big fish like tuna. Instead, they feast on tiny shrimp-like animals called krill. Blue whales have big plates full of bony, comb-like teeth in their mouths called baleen plates. The whale opens its mouth and fills it with salt water and krill. It filters the water out through the plates and the krill gets caught in the teeth, which the whale then eats. Blue whales can eat over 8,000 pounds of krill in a single day! Blue whales are also among the loudest animals on the planet and can produce sounds louder than a jet engine. They make a range of sounds including clicks, moans, and groans that can be heard by other blue whales up to 1,600 kilometers away! 14. The blue whale is ________________.

reading FOR QUESTIONS 15 TO 21, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. PENGUINS

Did you know that one of the most beloved birds in the world doesn’t even know how to fly? In fact, penguins spend most of their time underwater! Penguins are usually shown in icy landscapes, but are actually only found in one of the poles: the South. Smaller penguin populations also live in South Africa, Argentina, and New Zealand. There are 17 different species or types of penguins, ranging in size from the Emperor Penguin, the largest to the Little Blue Penguin, the smallest. Other species include the King Penguin, which is slightly smaller than the Emperor, and the Galapagos Penguin, which is slightly bigger than the Little Blue. Each penguin species also has unique markings on their heads, so, for example, the Chinstrap Penguin has a thin black band under their head that makes it look like it’s wearing a helmet, the Crested Penguin has a red crest, and, the most unusual, the Macaroni Penguin has long orange feathers sticking out of the top of its head. Penguins have to live in some of the Earth’s coldest and windiest regions, but, luckily, their bodies have thick layers of fat to protect them from the biting cold. Because of the amount of time penguins spend in the water, over millions of years, their wings gradually evolved into flippers. Even though they move around clumsily on land, the flippers allow them to slice through the water with ease and at great speed. Penguins are also famous for their black and white colourations that make it look like they are wearing tuxedos or suits. This is not a fashion statement though! The colours act as a disguise by helping the penguin blend in with the surrounding water. Penguins hunt in the water and feed on fish, octopus, and krill, a tiny shrimp-like animals. They also have to keep their eye out for predators, but, instead of the snakes and hawks that other birds are worried about, penguins have to worry about killer whales and leopard seals trying to eat them.

reading FOR QUESTIONS 15 TO 21, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. The White Bengal Tiger I’m sure you have seen hundreds of Orange Bengal Tigers but did you know that there are White Bengal Tigers, too? They are unique for their white colour fur, which is not a result of any disease. It is actually because of the absence of a pigment or a colour giving agent, which is found in orange coloured Bengal Tigers. If you compare the White Bengal Tiger to an Orange Bengal Tiger, you will notice the former are somewhat bigger. Even as cubs, they are bigger than the Orange Bengal Tiger cubs and tend to grow faster and heavier. The White Bengal Tiger’s stripes are like our fingerprints—no two tigers have the same! Also, the stripes of the tiger are a coloration of the skin. Did you know that several hundred White Bengal Tigers are currently in captivity worldwide, with about one hundred being found in India alone! That’s sad, isn’t it? I hate the very idea of keeping any animal in captivity, let alone tigers. Another thing I don’t like is showcasing these majestic creatures in entertainment business. It is not fair to force animals to work in circuses, is it? Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha is the host zoo for white tigers. In 1980, the first litter of white tigers were born to Deepak and Ganga, both normal tawny tigers. Subsequent litters of white tigers have been distributed to zoos, both at home and aboard. At present, the park is home to over thirty four white tigers. The good thing is that the population of the White Bengal Tiger is on the increase! Yippee! Their unique fur has made white tigers popular in entertainment, showcasing exotic animals, and at zoos. I am not very sure if that is something good for the tigers. What do you think?

Play ‘Spot and Tell a Bird’ game with your friends. The player, who correctly identifies the bird with fewer clues wins. Next, find out more information on Wikipedia about the birds you spot. Green surprise : Gift a green patch to your mother! Pool some money to buy and share vegetables, herbs, fruits and flower seeds with friends.
