A

Abhoth: SG & DA, "The Source of Uncleanness". A huge pool of grey matter that spawns monsters from its depths, just as Ubbo-Sathla spawns life. It dwells in a cave under Mount Voormithadreth, in a realm called "grey-litten Y'qaa" (or Y'quaa), that could be part of N'kai or a similar subterranean realm (Krannoria for example) and is accessible through tunnels in Mount Voormithadreth. Claimed to be the firstborn offspring of UbboSathla and the progenitor of Atlach-Nacha, it may also be related to Tsathoggua (q.v.). Some texts claim that it is the name by which the Hyperboreans vilified Ubbo-Sathla (although both are Hyperborean names), or linked with Shub-Niggurath due to its fruitfulness. Abormis: A town in SA, it was abandoned after the making of the Sphinx and the terror which followed. [L.Cornford (L.Carter)]

Achoravomas: In LP, a dreaded volcanic mountain which lies in the realm of Tscho Vulpanomi in the southern main. [L.Carter (Smith)]

Acromi: In TSZ, the adamantine box of Acromi is said to contain the medallions of an early dynasty of Hyperborean kings. By implication it could be the name of one such king. [C.A.Smith]

Aforgomon: "The God of Time", an obscure avatar of Yog-Sothoth (q.v.), he allows creatures to alter past and future times. He is worshipped in several worlds. He is said to dwell on the moon of Occlat. Strictly speaking he is not explicitly Hyperborean, but his time travel properties make his worship likely. [S.D.Aniolowski (C.A.Smith)]

Aguil: In CWW & LP, a sea-affronted town in a valley on the western coast of Mhu Thulan famous for its orchards & garths. It was blasted by Aphoom Zhar. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter]

Ahilidis: In LP, an old servant woman of Pharazyn in his house in Zabdamar. She was frozen to death by the light from the pole. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Aihai: 1) The race who lived on the planet Mars and worshipped Vulthoom (q.v.). They built fabulous cities such as Ignarh-Vath. They have been called vegetable in nature. 2) The planet itself may be called Aihai too. [L.Carter (C.A.S.); L.Cornford]

Aimoth: In GD, Aimoth the Acolyte is the disciple of Nabulus. He broke his vow of chastity with Akhamot but suffered an unpleasent doom. [R.M.Price]

Akhamot: In GD, a broze statue in which the spirit archetype of womanhood dwelt after being summoned by Nabulus the Wonder-Worker. Her natural female nature attracted the attention of Nabulus' students. desulting in tradgedy. [R.M.Price]

Aklo: In AF, A word of indeterminate meaning used in relation to a number of secret arts. Aklo chants, Aklo Formulæ, Aklo Rituals and Aklo Writings, the Aklo Book, Aklo Inscriptions and Aklo Sabaoths are all known of. Something is spoken of as just "the Aklo". The 49th Aklo is connected with the Great Awakening. One source claims that Aklo is the written language of the serpent people (q.v.). [L.Carter (A.Machen; H.P.Lovecraft); Chaosium; etc.]

Alabbac: In LE, the disciple of Cyron of Varaad. He was entrusted with the manuscripts which became the Book of Eibon. [L.Carter]

Alithira: In WH, a golden-haired maiden of Uzuldaroum, the cousin of Prince Trinius D'vor (therefore a noble woman), and lover of the warlock Izzamandiuth. She was kidnapped by nyarlathotep as a sacrifice. [J.R Fultz/J.Burns]

Alkahest: In ALK & UA, an all-consuming acid used by alchemists and sorcerers. It was invented by Enoycla. [L.Carter (folklore); L.Cornford]

Alu Kuthos: In CCF & SSG, one-time trooper, now apprentice thief and partner of Satampra Zieros. The two had a number of notable adventures together. [J.Ambuehl]

Amphyrene: In LE, the Empress of Hyperborea. She reigned after Pharnavootra. [Carter (Smith)]

Animals: Animals in Hyperborea include: elks (CWW, etc.), bears (CWW), mammoth (CWW),

tree-snakes & vipers (TSZ), cats (TSZ), eagles & hawks (WS), horses & musk-oxen (ID), donkeys (WH), black foxes (ID & UT), squid (LE), hares (ID), shaggy cattle (WH), fish in general (CWW & LP), sabre-toothed tigers, great sloths, vampire-bats (all in SG), white walruses (WH), moths (TSZ), and various types of fowl (CWW & TSZ) including eider ducks (ID) and pheasants (WH & FL). Blue-furred wolves exist in Hyperborea (WH). More exotic animals include: the ravening, scythe-clawed catobleps (SM, FS, UA), the huusim-bird (WS & SM), the Voor (SP), the furtive Jeelo (SP & FFB), the lizard-tailed and sooty feathered night-flying species of archaepteryx (SG) and giant jungle-spiders (WAW), basilisks and wyverns (UA), the giant snow snake (UT). Swine, dinosaurs (in general) and dogs are also hinted at (SG). The antehumans and serpent people, whilst being animals in the broadest sense, are rather more sentient and cultured (as were the Voor, and Voormis once). [C.A.Smith; L.Carter; L.J.Cornford]

Antanôk (planet): In HU, a long since destroyed planet which was situated between Mars and Jupiter. Its remains form the Asteroid Belt. Before it's destruction there was a little intercourse between Earth & Antanôk, and certain authorities suggest that mankind as we now know it is descended from Antanôkian colonists. Note a similar planet called Yllednis appears in Colin Wilson's novel The Star Vampires, and logic suggests it is the same world. Also called Antanoth (q.v.). [C.A.Smith]

Antanoth (planet): A variant spelling of Antanôk (q.v.).. It appears in one of Smith's letters, although the other spelling is more common, suggesting a misreading. [misreading (?) C.A.Smith]

Antarktos: 1) a cone-shaped mountain in the Antarctic, in which Groth-golka, a bird god, is supposed to sleep; 2) Pale flightless birds, apparently related to penguins (sometimes called "giant albino penguins"), who mimic the cries of the Primordial Ones (q.v.). Antehumans: The name given to the humanoid elder race which existed prior to the Hominids. The inhabitants of Ultima Thule. One of the few named antehumans is the sorcerer Haon-Dor who dwelt under Mount Voormithadreth (q.v.). They are taller and thinner than average humans. In Middle Eastern folklore the genies, giants and affrits are considered antehumans. [C.A.Smith; etc.]

Antillia: In WS & UA, a magical isle with which the Hyperboreans traded in their magic propelled vessels. Barbaric shamen perserve ancient rit Other stories (e.g. Conan of the Isles) mention it as an Atlantean outpost. Quite probably this is America. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter]

Apha-wood: In TA, a type of wood. [C.A.Smith]

Aphiroth: In AF, an all-wise Elder Brother of the monastic Pnakotic Brotherhood who engraved secrets on tablets of lagh-metal. [L.Carter]

Aphoom Zhah: In LP & AF, "The Cold Flame," a fearsome being that haunts the bowels of Mount Yaanek, having travelled to Earth from Neptune (Yaksh). The offspring of Cthugha (although texts are not clear on this point). It is physically a ball of grey flame. Much data on it is contained in the Pnakotic Manuscripts where it is attributed as the progenitor of Rhan-Tegoth and the Gnophkehs. Possibly a facet of Zhar? [L.Carter]

Aquom-Zhah: A variant spelling of Aphoom Zhah (q.v.). [L.Cornford]

Arkya: In DR, an antehuman kingdom of vague nature. Arkya is a land of magicians. It may be the founding place of the Dirka Priests and of the Song of Yste. [L.J.Cornford (R.A.W.Lowndes)]

Athammaus: In TA, the chief headsman of Uzuldaroum and once of Commoriom and son of Manghai Thal. It was his repeated beheadings of Knygathin Zhaum which lead to the abandonment. [C.A.Smith]

Athlok: In AF, the acolyte of the Pnakotic Brotherhood who forefills the prophesy of Lith and frees Aphoom Zhah to the destruction of Hyperborea. [L.Carter]

Arthame: In IVP, a "wizard's sword", which is to say a magical sword used in the performing of rites rather than as a weapon. The Scimitar of Nothvair is another example of such a weapon (FFB). [L.Carter; L.J.Cornford]

Atlach-Nacha: In SG & DA, "The Spider God". Superficially resembles a giant hairy spider with a hideous, vaguely human face. He came from Saturn with Tsathoggua. He dwells underground (in Mount Voormithadreth) and spends his æons spinning a weird web. It kills its victims by puncturing them with thousands of spins and sucking out their juices. Said to be the Spawn of Abhoth and is served by the "Grey Weavers". [C.A.Smith; B.Lumley; L.Carter]

Atlach-Nacha, The Papyrus of: In OT, a ritual text containg rites to the dead. It features the "cocooning" of a dead body so it can undergo "rebirth". [LJ.Cornford/R.M.Price]

Atlantis: In TA & IA, the empire in the Atlantic Ocean, which paid tribute to Hyperborean. It lies slightly north west of Africa. Noted for its sorceries and the living metal - orichalc. It was contemporary with both Hyperborea and Valusia. Originally (c.100,000 B.C.) it was a barbarian land, but in time Atlantis was divided into several kingdoms ruled by the Witch-Kings. As time passed the land sank until, during the Great Cataclysm (c.25,000 B.C) its last islands (Poseidonis) disappeared and its few survivors fled either to Thuria or to Antillia (America). Several of its colonies survived, like Bal-Sagoth (into the 12th century) and Negari (into the 16th century). Several Old Ones were worshipped in Atlantis including Dagon, Iod, Bugg-Shash (as "The Night-Thing"), Gol-goroth, and Ghatanothoa. [C.A.Smith (folklore); H.P.Lovecraft; R.E.Howard; etc.]

Avalzaunt: In SC, a necromancer whose ghoulish corpse ravaged the land of Uthnor in the Year of the Crimson Spider. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Avoosl Wuthoqquan: WAW, a greedy merchant who was lead to his doom. [C.A.Smith]

Azathoth: In FTG, "The Dæmon-Sultan," "The Lord of All Things" and "The Bubbler at the Hub". A blind, mindless, amorphous, star-sized mass attended by Other Gods, including Nyarlathotep (the Soul of Azathoth). Sometimes called Azathoth-Ubbo-Sathla in His rôle as the Progenitor of the Universe (referred to as "the Prime Archetype") when he unconsciously created the Universe. Azathoth and Ubbo-Sathla divided like a singlecelled animal into two "equal" entities. Azathoth was cast down by the Elder Gods when they discovered that they could not control His madness. His name (particularly his Other Name in his "bivalvular shape", N----------- or Xada-Hgla,) is dangerous to utter, and His insane mutterings create the laws of time and space. He has been called a personification of the Big Bang due to his title "Nuclear Chaos". [C.A.Smith (H.P.Lovecraft); etc.]

Baaki-Ast: In SA, a village near Tscho Vulpanomi, which was threatened by lava until Hormagor turned it aside with magic. [L.J.Cornford] Balok of Altuas: In WH, a sorcerer of the ancient land of Altuas who summoned Byagoona

(Nyarlathotep). He is mentioned in passing, but is not a Hyperborean figure as such. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns (J.Ambuehl)]

Bel: In WH, a youth from Merba on a quest to find the "Oracle of the Mountains", accompaned by Zojin & Haar. He was killed while fighting fish-men creatures (Deep Ones). [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Belan: In TZ, the fine featured son of Xeelan. He pursued his father's profession of torturer, even to the torture of his brother Hanstead. Like is father he can talk with the dead. He had a secret (I wont spoil the story). [I.Davey]

Berdoz: In CCF, a soldier in the army of an unnamed Hyperborean king. [J.Ambuehl]

"Black Tiger, The Year of the": In LE, the year in which Eibon disappeared. [L.Carter]

Black Tablets of R'lyeh: In SSG, the set of manuscripts copied from tablets, said to have come from R'lyeh. In later ages this text will become known as The R'lyeh Text. [J.Ambuehl (A.W.Derleth)]

Book of Night, The: In ABN, a sorcerous book, also known as the Noctuary of Vizooranos, which was discovered and lost again by Eibon. It was called "The book of Night" because the secrets it held could only be written down in the dark of night. Note: The Ghorl Nigäl is also known as "The Book of Night". Book of Yog-Sothoth: In WH, a book of ritualistic verse. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Burrowers Beneath, The: 1) A chapter of the Book of Eibon is called "The Burrower Beneath"; 2) A rough translation of the chapter was made by Robert Blake and published under this title. It can be found in The Stairs in the Crypt and Others; 3) The name was also adopted for a memoir of Henri-Laurent De Marginy. [H.P.L.; L.Carter; B.Lumley]

Byagoona: In SA, "The Faceless One" & "The Black Sphinx of Abormis". A mythical being mentioned in a secret parable. Before Nyarlathotep (q.v.) was known by that name he was referred to obliquely as Byagoona or Sotho. [R.Bloch; L.Cornford; J.Ambuehl]

Byakhee: In AF, a strange interstellar race who are servants of Xastur (Hastur). They are used as steeds by members of some cults, including the Pnakotic Brotherhood, despite their unnerving appearance. They communicate by wolf-like howls. [L.Carter (A.W.Derleth/H.P.Lovecraft?)]

Byd Praenos: In CCF, a noted Hyperborean sorcerer and author of the Chronicles of Cron'drof. [J.Ambuehl]

C

Camla-Zaon, The Peak of: In WH, a mountain in Mhu Thulan on which Jasu'un has religous experiences. Probably part of the Zabdamar range. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Camorba: In SC, a town containing an abbey to the worship of Shimba. In was attacked by the lich Avalzaunt. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith?)]

Cerngoth: In WH, a northerly flower-girdled sea-port in Mhu Thulan, on the eastern shore of the Hyperborean Sea, said to be the "jewel of the north". It features shell-shaped domed buildings among which is the golden Temple of the Seven Gods, and griffon-carved wharves. It was blasted by Rlim Shaikorth. North of Cerngoth lie the bleak mountains of Zabdamar leading to Polarion. In time the great glacier of Polarion covered Cerngoth utterly. [C.A.Smith; J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Cerngothic Dynasty: In LE, the last Dynasty of Hyperborea, following the end of the Uzuldaroum Dynasty. It was so named because the line was based on a branch of the royal family who originated in Cerngoth, although that city had probably already succumb to the Great Ice by the time of Zorquus achieved the throne. The line ran: Zorquus, Pharapha (23 years), Thaarapion, and finally Rhastazoul (16 years). [L.Carter]

Chag Ylum: In WH, a legendary warrior of the Ligion of the Black Falcon. He accompained Izzamandiuth on his quest. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Charnametros: In LP & LE, the Emperor of Hyperborea after Amphyrene. The Year of the Green Spider happens early in his reign. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Charnadis: In LE, the "Demon of Time". A god or spirit. Possibly the Hyperborean version of Quachil Uttaus but more likely Aformagon. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Chushax: An alternative spelling of the name Zishaik (Shathak) the wife of Tsathoggua. It appears to be used in "darker and more obscure [archives] than those of Pnom". [C.A.Smith]

Chronicles of Cron'drof: In CCF, a magical chronicle written by the ancient Hyperborean sorcerer Byd Praenos. [J.Ambuehl]

Cinartrel Sea: In SSG, a sea north west of Hyperborea in which the Isle of Ta-Shon once lay. [J.Ambuehl]

City of Archives: In PDW, the City of the Great Race of Yith. Also known as Pnakotis. [L.Carter (H.P.Lovecraft?)]

Commorian: In SG, the name used for a citizen of Commoriom. [C.A.Smith]

Commoriom: In TA, TSZ, etc., the high built capital of Hyperborea. A white city of numberless spires of marble and granite. It was the most powerful city of its age gaining tributes from Atlantis, Mu, Tscho Vulpanomi, and Mhu Thulan. It was overrun by the formless spawn of Knygathin Zhaum during the reign of Loquamethros, and subsequently inhabited by the Formless Spawn of Tsathoggua. South of Commoriom are marsh-grow jungles filled with mailed monsters. [C.A.Smith]

Cold Ones: In AF, the name used for ice-spirits who are believed to be the servants of Rlim Shaikorth. Also known as Ylidheem. [L.Carter]

Constellations: In FS, LP, etc. A number of constellations specific to the Hyperboreans are mentioned: The Basilisk (LP); The Mantichora (FS);. [L.Carter]

Cornak Sphm: In "The Pirrak" this Hyperborean sorcerer is listed alongside Haon-Dor, Pnom and Eifon [Eibon]. [W.C.Keel/A.Gullette]

"Crimson Spider, The Year of the": In SC, a year during the reign of King Phariol. [L.Carter]

Crxyxll: In DT, a mouthless intelligent white mould who dwelt on an otherwise uninhabited world in orbit of the dim star Klr (q.v.). He is regarded as one of the most powerful "mundane" (i.e. not divine) magicians in the universe. During the Hyperborean Era it swapped its mind with the serpent-man sorcerer Zloigm, according to the Book of Eibon. Presumably he died in Zloigm's body as Zloigm's soul only returns to Earth in UA? Cthugha: In PDW & AF, "The Burning One". The fire god of the mythology said to live near the star Fomalhaut ("The Mouth of the Fish"). Connected with Fthagghua (q.v.) and the Fire Vampires or Flame Creatures. The father of Aphoom Zhah, although some text declare Aphoom Zhah to be Cthugha's father! Sometimes spelt "Cthuga" and also called "Kuthhuga". [L.Carter (A.W.Derleth)]

Cthulhu: In PDW & WH, a Great Old One who slumbers in R'lyeh. The spelling "Kthulhut" is used more commonly in Hyperborea and favoured by me. [L.Carter (H.P.Lovecraft); J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Cunambria, Queen: In DS, TSZ, LE, the Queen of Hyperborea (as opposed to Empress) and the sister of Vardanax. The last of the Uzuldarines. Her nephew, Zorquus, followed her to the throne. She ruled for at least 15 years, and passed away during the Year of the Black Tiger. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter]

Cxaxukluth: The androgynous spawn of Azathoth, the "uncle" of Cthulhu and the "grandfather" of Tsathoggua. It spawned Hziulquoigmnzhah and Ghizghuth in a far system before moving to Yuggoth with its "family". Still resident on Yuggoth. It has cannibalistic appetites that cause it to be shunned, even by the Old Ones. It appeared for a long time like Cxaxukluth had (either directly or indirectly) spawned Cthulhu on the planet Vhoorl (q.v.), however an obscure text elucidates us: a god called Ptmâk is the direct father of Cthulhu, and thus "brother" (and missing twin) to Cxaxukluth, making Ptmâk and Cxaxukluth the Hyperborean names for Nug and Yeb. Cykranosh: In DS & UA, etc., the name by which Saturn was known in Hyperborea. [C.A.Smith]

Cyron: In LE, a magician born in Varaad. In the year of the Green Spider Cyron (20 years old)

became apprenticed to Eibon (65 years old). Cyron was aged 87 when Eibon disappeared, having left his tutelage some years earlier. Cyron died only ?? years later. [L.Carter]

Deb'r-Shen, The Jewel of: In SSG, a jewel stolen by Satampra Zeiros. [J.Ambuehl]

Deep Dendo: In SP, the name given to a subterranean realm under Thule (q.v.) in which Voorish Domes are found. [L.Carter (A.Machen)]

Desert Without A Name: In WH, also known as the "nameless desert" -- a land in the south eastern corner of Mhu Thulan, with one edge against the Mountains of Nephtarya. Said to lie between Hyperborea and Mu! The desert seems to behave oddly, possibly due to the influence of Nyarlathotep, whose Dark Citadel seems to lie in some dimensional rift within this desert. Dirka Song: In SP, this is mentioned in the Testament of Haon-Dor and refers to the Song of Yste, which suggests that Arkya is antehuman also, possibly even part of Thule? [L.Carter (R.A.W.Lowndes)]

Djals: In WAW, a type of money, a silver coin of greater in value than pazoors. [C.A.Smith]

Djongua-beans: In TA, a type of food - nutritious vilads. They appear to produce stomach upsets if eaten in large quantities. [C.A.Smith]

D'Vor, Prince: See Trinius D'Vor. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

E

Eibon: In DS, etc., Eibon of Mhu Thulan was the mightiest of the sorcerers of Hyperborea and a worshipper of Tsathoggua. He was born in the year of Commoriom's fall, and aged 12

Eibon's family were persecuted into the wilderness. At 10 years he became apprenticed to Zylac and remained into adulthood, before wandering the continent. After a unnaturally long and eventful life (some 132 years) he was persecuted until be fled to Cykranosh (Saturn), 100 years before Hyperborea succumbed to the great Ice Age. After this his disciple, Cyron of Varaad, compiled the Book of Eibon from his notes. He life is detailed in the Vita Ivonis ("The Life of Eibon"), also by Cyron of Varaad. The name "Eibon" appears to have been derived by one of the translators from the heretical Christian sect, the Eibonites, and does indeed appear as a personal name (the "E" of T.E.D.Klien's name stands for Eibon). Eibon, Book of: The magical book of Eibon of Mhu Thulan. The book was passed down by secret cults to the present day. Never printed until the 20th century, there are many editions which vary widely. Editions include: the Kishite Version; The Punic (1600 B.C.); The Greek Edition; The Latin Liber Ivonis (10th-11th century); Livre d'Ivon (13th century); and the only printed version, the Adkins and Jones edition of the Latin text (A.D.1937). Eibur Tsanth: In ID, a jeweler. [C.A.Smith]

Eighon-wood: In TA, a hard wood used to manufacture things like chopping blocks. [C.A.Smith]

Eiglophian Mountains: TA, SG, etc., a frightful central mountain range of black, glassy-walled mountains, riddled with tunnels. The four-coned mountain Voormithadreth lies at the centre of this range. One prong runs south, one prong East, dissecting the continent. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter; L.J.Cornford]

Elder Beings: IN PDW, a name for the star-headed crinoid beings otherwise called Polar Ones or Old Ones in Hyperborean texts [L.Carter (C.A.Smith/H.P.Lovecraft)]

Elder Gods, The: 1) A group of gods generally opposed to the Other Gods and the "villains" of the Mythos. They dwell in Glyu-Vho, but originate in "the Great Abyss". According to legend they tried to control the insanity of the Other Gods by making them sentient, but the Other Gods resented being controlled, and rebelled against the tyranny and oppressive laws, travelling out of that dimension into the universe of Azathoth's creation. Angered by having no-one to rule, the Elder Gods pursued them, and finding them running amok through this universe they imprisoned them in a death-like sleep, and sealed them with spells (according to their followers). After this they appear to have lost interest in the Earth. Their worshippers (called "Reformists" by Robert Price) believe them to be the creators of the Great Old Ones. A breakaway faction, the "Redemptionists," believe the

Elder Gods placed the Great Old Ones in a kind of purgatory. Strangely the Confessions of the Mad Monk Clithanus calls the Elder Gods "the Old Ones"! Few Elder Gods are named: Nodens, Kthanid, Yagkoolan, Bast, Vorvardoss, and possibly Yad-Thaddag S Rebathoth. They are served by the Star-Warriors of Orion and the Nightgaunts and have agents such as S'ngac; 2) The name is also applied more generally to any of the ancient gods. Enoycla: In ALK, the Alchemist who invented the Alkahest. He was attacked by the demon Rrhar'il but defeated it. [L.Cornford (L.Carter)]

E-poh: In DA, the leader of the Tcho-Tcho people. It sometimes dwells in the Cavern of Prototypes under Mount Voormithadreth. [L.Carter (A.W.Derleth/M.Schorer)]

Flames of Ziridiaz, The: In WH, a magical spell, which causes a sphere of flames to surround the caster. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Formless Spawn of Tsathoggua: Living black blobs occasionally assuming toad-like forms and possibly hooves and batwings. They dwell in N'kai and Yoth. Sfatlicllp, Zvilpogghua and to a lesser extent the Voormis are related to them. A branch of Formless Spawn were created by the half-breed Voormi Knygathin Zhaum when the strain of multiple decapitations caused him to revert to his Azathothian characteristics and overrun Commoriom (q.v.). Gelek: In WH, the hero of Uzuldaroum who was sent to discover the source of the zombie army. He was abandoned in the nameless desert by the Necromancer Ooth'zar. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Geography of Hyperborea: Starting with Lin Carter's map: Hyperborea is a wedge-shaped land, with Polarion at the thin end, the, Mhu Thulan, then the central jungle sof Zesh seperated by a montain range, with plains, a desert and volcanic Tscho Vulpanomi at the far southern coast. It is surrounded by many small islands. Southern swamps and the Isle of Oszhtror are also mentioned. In the northern archipeligo Thulask and Ultima Thule (north west) are noteworthy. Polarion is shielded from Mhu Thulan by a range of mountains I have named

Zabdamar, this name also applies to the eastern coast of Mhu Thulan, around Cergoth. The Eigophians seem to form the dividing "backbone" of the land, dividing the east and west coasts and well as seperating Mhu Thulan from Commoriom. I have assumed most major cities to be by rivers, many of which drain off the Eiglophians. A new, more detailed map should be printed in The Book of Eibon (Chaosium Books). Ghisghuth: Alternative spelling of Ghizghuth (q.v.). This appears to be the spelling favoured by C.A.Smith, but the "Ghizghuth" spelling appears in Planets and Dimensions (Mirage Press, 1973). [C.A.Smith]

Ghizghuth: In the Hyperborean Cycle one of the male spawn of Cxaxukluth born on a far system. Its "wife" is Zstylzhemgni, and by "her" it became the "father" of Tsathoggua and cousin to Kthulhut (Cthulhu). Lovecraft lists Yeb as Tsathoggua's father in his genealogy, suggesting that this is another name for Yeb, however this does give rise to the oddity of Nug/Cxaxukluth spawning its own twin brother Yeb if this is the correct identification of these beings! Probably Ptmâk and Cxaxukluth as Nug and Yeb, with Ghizghuth being an unknown spawn and the relationship being more complex than the Lovecraft Genealogy suggests. Also spelt Ghisghuth and Ghizguth. Glund fluid: In IVP, a rare fluid needed to make the Ygthar Elixir. Eibon was somewhat upset to find out waht it was (I wont ruin the story for you!). [L.Carter]

Gnoph-Hek: Alternative version of Gnoph-Keh or Gnophkeh. [A.W.Derleth]

Gnoph-Keh: The name used often for a single creature of the Gnophkeh race. Described as "the hairy myth-thing of the Greenland ice that walks sometimes on two legs, sometimes on four, and sometimes on six". As an individual being it is sometimes called simply "the Hairy Thing" and is sometimes confused with Rhan-Tegoth. It may well aid Rhan-Tegoth, Ithaqua, Zhar and Lloigor (god). "The Pirrak" by W.C.Keel/A.Gullette suggests that the giant Gnoph-Keh is the progenitor of the Gnophkeh race. Its body lies frozen in ice, in caverns below Hyperborea. Gnophkehs (race): Sharp horned, coarse haired beings with six long-limbs, found in Hyperborea, Lomar, and the Arctic Circle (possibly other other cold regions and the planet Borea?). Empowered with blizzard summoning and reducing temperatures. Connected with Rhan-Tegoth (whom they seem to worship) and possibly Ithaqua, Zhar and Lloigor (god). In early texts (such as the Book of Eibon) it is a race of viscous cannibals who were driven from Lomar by mankind and the Voormis, but in later texts it appears as a lone creature, sometimes called "the Hairy Thing" and is confused with Rhan-Tegoth. Possibly it was a more numerous creature but is now on the brink of extinction and only encountered in ones. The Gnophkeh are either creatures of air or water (this is unclear). Huran: In SSG, a powerful Voormis shaman whose tomb on Ta-Shon was violated by Satampra Zeiros and Alu Kuthos. [J.Ambuehl]

Hyperborea: 1) An old land roughly corresponding to modern Greenland (c.2,000,000-95,000 B.C?). First inhabited in the Miocene Era by the serpent people (or snake people), then by the cannibal Gnophkehs and the furry Voormis, next the antehumans of Arkya colonised the land before Man came from the south. A realm where Tsathoggua was worshipped. Eibon and other great sorcerers lived there. It was destroyed by glacial advance in the last Ice Age. According to the Pnakotic Brotherhood this was as a result of Aphoom Zhah (q.v.); 2) One group of refugees established a colony on mainland Europe (Valusia) which was also called "Hyperborea" and this colony perpetuated Hyperborean culture right up to the collapse of the Hyborian Kingdoms, c.10,000 B.C. Hyperborean Cycle, The: The myth cycles commonly believed in Hyperborea (q.v.), also known as the Tsathogguan Cycle. It is a branch of the Mythos with many names which have no equal elsewhere and appears to be a blend of the cosmic divinities with a rural mythology. Supreme god was Azathoth, under whom was Cxaxukluth. It produced Ghizghuth, Ptmâk, and Hziulquoigmnzhah. Ghizghuth and Zstylzhemgni produced Tsathoggua, who is the first of these to be worshipped by Earthlings. Tsathoggua and his wife Zishaik (Chushax or Shathak), and their son Zvilpogghua (Zvilpoggua). Ptmâk spawned Kthulhut. Other deities include Nyarlathotep and his wife Y'houndeh, who was spawn of Zyhumé. [C.A.S.; L.Carter; L.Cornford]

Hziulquoigmnzhah: The Hyperborean name for the uncle of Tsathoggua in DS. He is the cousin of Cthulhu and the brother of Ghizghuth. He was born in a far system, moved to Yuggoth, and then to Neptune before settling on Saturn. He dwells permanently on Saturn now. He is worshipped on those worlds, although he is now inactive. Knygathin Zhaum: In TA, a half-breed Voormis. Said to be the child of Sfatlicllp. He reverted to his Azathothian archetype due to the stress of multiple beheadings and populated Commoriom, driving the humans thence. [C.A.Smith]

Koth-Uggha: In CCF, "The Crystal Flame". A god summoned to Yongras and imprisoned under a five pointed temple, although the Book of Eibon points out that the being will escape one day. An avatar form of Cthugha, possibly the Hyperborean name for that god. There is a logic in the "Crystal Flame" giving birth to Aphoom Zhah, the "Cold Flame". See also Cthugha. Kthulhut: In US, etc., a dead alien "sleeping" in R'lyeh somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Lord of the Cosmic Octopi (the Spawn of Kthulhut) and the Deep Ones. According to legend he was born on the planet Vhoorl by Nug/Ptmâk (q.v.). He was driven mad before departing to spawn his children on Xoth (Zoth?) to the quasi-female entity Idh-yaa. He then moved to Earth (via other planets) where he became a powerful leader. He was imprisoned in R'lyeh by the Elder Gods with Kh'yrog Tablets. Nod: In WH, a hermit in the Mountains of Nephtarya, who has become known as the "Great Oracle of the Mountains". He was once a noted soldier in old Commoriom and may be very ancient. Nod is, of course, a Biblical name. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Nothvair, The Scimitar of: In FFB, a "wizard's sword", which is to say a magical sword used in the performing of rites rather than as a weapon. It is rune engraven and is used in exorcisms. In later ages it will be known as the Scimitar of Brazari. [L.J.Cornford]

Nug: In DA, The Father of Ghouls. The name is something of a mistake, it should be Nagoob. [L.Carter (H.P.L.]

Nungis Avargomon: In FS, the nephew and heir of Vooth Raluorn and the thirtieth High Constable of Commoriom after his uncle's disappearance. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Ooth'zar: In WH, the necromancer of V'hixia, who dwelt in a dark jade tower, not far from the namelss desert. He was accused of being respocible for the zombie army, but proved himself innocent by pursuing the mystery. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Outer One: In CWW, a term applied to Rlim Shaikorth, although in such a context as to imply that it is a general rather than specific term. Presumably it equates to the term "Outer Gods" used in the Cthulhu Mythos, indicating some extra-terrestrial entity. [C.A.Smith]

Peneleos: In WH, the Abbot of Cerngoth who was placed in charge of the Temple of the Seven Gods when Jasu'un Toth went on his quest. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Pharapha: In LE, the second Cerngothic ruler of Hyperborea. The son of Zorquus. He ruled for 23 years and was followed by Thaarapion. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Pharazyn: In LP, the Enchanter who was supposed to free Aphoom Zhah. but who committed suicide before he could be forced to do so. [L.Carter]

Phariol: In SC, a king of Commoriom during the year of the Crimson Spider and the horror in Uthnor. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith?)]

Pharnath: The central province of Hyperborea, south of the Eiglophians. It is almost completely taken up with the Jungles of Zesh. Here Commoriom, and Uzuldaroum after it, stood here. ??Phenquor??: LE, etc. A province of Hyperborea: 1) in SM, etc., a northern land containing a mountain range -- this reference I have changed to Zabdamar; 2) in LE, the land around Varaad, forming the South-Eastern section of Hyperborea, south of the Province of Uthnor. Note: Phenquor was used by Smith as "Veezi Phenquor" -- Carter promised to change it, but failed to do so (unless Zabdamar was his attempt to change it?). I have amended most references to Zabdamar, however Carter also said that the southern city of Varaad lay in Phenquor. Pirrak, The: In "The Pirrak", 1) a minor god who came to Earth with Tsathoggua from Cykranosh. It is probably the progenitor of the Pirrak race; 2) a semiaquatic race which dwelt in caverns under a Hyperborean city. They were once a toad-race who came to earth with Tsathoggua and still regard that god as their patron. At this time they were known as by another name. In time they adapted to the sea, possibly under the influence of the god Pirrak, until, with the destruction of Hyperborea, they became predominantly dwellers in the Arctic Ocean. Pnakotic Brotherhood: In AF, HU, etc., a secret Brotherhood who preserve many ancient texts. They fled to Lomar after the destruction of Hyperborea. [L.Carter (H.P.Lovecraft)]

Pnakotic Manuscripts: In AF, HU, etc., a set of manuscripts which came down from the Great Race and was guarded by the Pnakotic Brotherhood. [L.Carter (H.P.Lovecraft)]

Pnar: In LE, a town famous for its weavers, who are most skilled in the manufacture of silken cloths. It lies in Mhu Thulan. [L.Carter]

Pnom: In CWW & LP, etc., The Exorcist and renowned Genealogist of the age. His legend is partly related in Eibon's chapter "The Face from Below". He authored the Parchment of Pnom. [C.A.Smith]

Pnom, Parchments of: A lengthy work authored by Pnom which contains lengthy geneologies and many rites of exorcism. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter]

Polar Ones: In PDW, the name given to the star-headed Old Ones who dwelt at the poles according to the Book of Eibon. [L.Carter]

Polarians: In CWW, the outlandish men of the islands nearer to the pole than Thulask. [C.A.Smith]

Polarion: In TA, WS, CWW, ID, etc., originally an isle of snow inhabited by uncouth peoples. It appears to be very near the north pole. It became an ice desert when oncoming glaciers crept in valleys that had once been fertile with fern and cycad, and passes that had once been highways of busy traffic. As time went by the rolling Polarion glacier linked the now engulfed island with Mhu Thulan. the White Sybil came from here some yeas before the fall of Commoriom. In WS, it is spoken of as a "ice-bound waste" and a "glaciertaken plateau of Polarion", similar terms to Kadath (?). Apparently a pass through the mountains of Zabdamar link Polarion with Mhu Thulan. Pornox (planet): In DT, a star in the constellation of the Mantichora. A frozen satellite of that star houses a race of sagacious arthropods [L.Carter]

Serpent people: In US, SG, UA, etc., the prehuman inhabitants of the earth, particularly the Thurian continent. They had a colony on Hyperborea in the Miocene Era, where they had strange cities of of curious buildings and Babelian towers (i.e. sky-reaching) and were served by the Goat-spawn and some shoggoths. They were greater sorcerers than humans. A few remain in the caverns under Mount Voormithadreth, but other pockets might exist as the serpent folk have the power to resemble other bipeds. Seven Gods, The Temple of: In WH, the Temple of the Seven Gods in Cerngoth. The gods are: Karakal, Lobon, NathHorthath, Tamash, Zo-Kalar, Hagarg Ryonis and one other. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Sfatlicllp: In FTG, the "daughter" of Zvilpogghua. Little else is known, but some can be infered: she was born on Kythamil and is probably the "mother" of the Formless Spawn. She mated with a Voormi, giving rise to the Azathothian strain in Voormis exitibited by Knygathin Zhaum, her direct descendent. Shaggai (planet): In SH, the name of a planet noted for its viscous insectoid life. The planet was destroyed by a gigantic worm, "The Worm that Gnaws the Night", which gnawed the planet's vitals. [L.Carter (H.P.Lovecraft/R.Campbell)]

Thulask: In CWW, a broad northern island of the Hyperborean archipelago. Its people are called Thulaskians. All the inhabitants of Thulask save the magicians Dooni and Ux Loddhan were killed by Rlim Shaikorth. The Temple of Zargok lies in Thulask. [C.A.Smith; W.C.Keel/A.Gullette]

Thule, Ultima: In SP, OT, UA, a northern land once the home of the Voormis, the furtive Jeelo, the Voor, and the antehumans, and which was also briefly settled by humans before the Ice Sheet engulfed it. Its settlements include Ith, the capital city, Yazra and Thul. Its regions include the Yurga Mountains, the Woodlands of Llorn, the River Zendish, and the Desolation of Voor. Rare and extinct plants and artifacts are found frozen and preserved in the ice of Thule and are prized among sorcerers. Often called simply Thule. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith); L.Cornford]

Timelines: Here is something of a potted timeline, taking the founding of Commoriom as the starting point. The exact time of Hyperborea is unclear. Some stories mention Miocene Era (26 to 12 million B.C.), others feature living examples of such extinct lifeforms as mammoths, dinosaurs, and sabar-toothed tigers. While ID mentions the Pleistocene Era (2.5 million to 650,000 B.C.), certainly the destruction lies in an Ice Age (prob. the Paleolithic Era, or Stone Age of 650,000 to 8,000 B.C. which saw off Homo erectus). The only "exact" date I known of is in a letter from H.P.Lovecraft (dated March 2, 1932) which puts "the heyday of Hyperborean Commoriom" at 100,000 B.C., the same time as R.E.Howard's King Kull stories, which fits nicely, but is not authoritative: • • •

Eibon then escapes the zealots of Yhoundeh. • 340 Satampra Zeiros becomes the most famous and successful thief in Hyperborea following the death of Tirouv Ompallios in the ruins of Commoriom. • 3?? Queen Cunambria dies. Zorquus becomes the first Emperor of the Cerngothic Dynasty. Cyron of Varaad dies.. The Book of Eibon is passed to Alabbac of Mnardis. • 3?? Zorquus dies and his son Pharapha follows him to the throne. • ??? Tirouv Ompallios: In TSZ, a great thief and partner to Satampra Zeiros prior to his death during an expedition to then then abandoned ruins of Commoriom. [C.A.Smith]

Tortha: In WS, a poet in Cerngoth a hundred years before the coming of the ice. He fell in love with the White Sybil. [C.A.Smith]

Trinius D'vor: In WH, a Prince of Uzuldaroum and son of Emperor Jeddar Fong. He was a friend of the warlock Izzamandiuth and his cousin Alithria. He was killed while defending the ladies of the court from bat-winged horrors. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Tsangth: In FS, one of the stout constables who accompanies Vooth Raluorn on his quest for Yzduggor: He fell prey to a catobleps. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Tsath-yo: A magical language used by some early, non-human civilisations, such as the Voormis. [H.P.Lovecraft; L.Carter]

Tscho Vulpanomi: In TA, WAW, WS, LP, etc., the semi-legendary volcanic region of the far south, probably corresponding with modern Iceland. Here a lake of boiling asphaltum beats forever at the sea. The dread volcanic mountain Achoravomas belches rivers of flame over the land. Crystals of tourmaline are found here, with diamond-sanded, rubygravelled shores. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter]

Tsunth: In DA, the leader of the Hidden Ones who serve Zulchequon. It dwells in the Cavern of Prototypes under Mount Voormithadreth. [L.Carter]

Tuluum: In LE, a Prince of Iqqua who succeeded his grandfather Xactura. [L.Carter (Smith?)]

Ulphar: A place of shadow-haunted tombs visited by Eibon and Zaljis. Note that between the first and second printings of "The Stairs in the Crypt" the province changed from Ulphar to Uthnor. Uthnor: In SC & HU, a province, land or kingdom occupying the vernal hills of eastern Hyperborean. An abode of many wizards, notably Avalzaunt. Its capital is Zanzonga. It also includes settlements at Camorba. Sometimes confused with Ulphar. [L.Carter (Smith)]

Utressor: A place of eldritch fanes, visited by Eibon and Zaljis, as related in Eibon's chapter of the same name. It is a magical "Shangri-la" style land lying hidden in the ice of Polarion. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith); R.Tierney]

Ux Loddhan: In CWW, one of the sorcerers of Thulask who was changed by Rlim Shaikorth. [C.A.Smith]

Uzuldaroum: In TNG, TA, AF, etc., the capital of Hyperborea after the fall of Commoriom. It lay a day's journey south of Commoriom, on the fertile plains and jungles of Hyperborea. Uzuldaroum itself fell to the advancing ice when Aphoom Zhah was freed. The land around Uzuldaroum is described thus: "an agreeable country, full of farms and orcards and running waters and green, flowery woods" which suggests that it is not without its waterways. Varaad: LE, etc. A city in the province of Phenquor (see Phenquor), in central Hyperborea (on the Eastern Coast), just south of Uthnor. It is a city of Merchants and artisans. Cyron the wizard came from Varaad. It is said that the people of Varaad originally came from Kamula on the Thurian Continent to the east, and worshipped the cat goddess Ixeera. [L.Carter]

Vardanax: In LE, the Last Uzuldarine Emperor, following on from Saphirion. His reign lasted 10 years and was succeeded by his sister, Queen Cunambria. [Carter (Smith)]

Vash-Tsoth: In FFB, a woodsman. [L.J.Cornford]

Veezi Phenquor: In TNG, an alchemist and magician in Uzuldaroum. He was a skilled pharmacist and toxicologist who aided Satampra Zeiros in his thief of the 39 girdles. [C.A.Smith]

Vegetation: Vegetation on Hyperborea includes: mandrakes (UA), upas-trees (UA), ogga-wood (TSZ), palm-trees (TSZ, WAW), conifers (FS), ferns (WS), reeds (DS), white waterlillies (ID), cycads (WS & FS), calamus (LE), swamp-fruit (FS), suvana-fruit (TA), willow (CWW), red yams (TSZ), briars (WS), eighon-wood (TA), djongua-beans (TA), red poppies (ID), apha-wood (TA), foum-fruit (TA), pomegrantes (TSZ & WH), nutmeg & sandlewood (WH), qualk-root & zothau-weed (CCF), and bushes (ID), desert cacti (WH), while flowers of vermilion, sanguine, cerulean and bright azure grow commonly (WS). The zela-flowers (WH). Wheat for flour is implied by the presence of bread (TSZ). Verhadis: In ALK, Verhadis the Black is the name used by Guspard du Nord for the character known as Verdhis the Black (see below) in the English version of the Book of Eibon. Such varient names are common in medieval manuscripts. [L.J.Cornford (A.Bennison)]

Verdhis: In ALK, Verdhis the Black is the sorcerer whose use of an imprisoned Hound of Tindalos against his enemies did much to weaken magic in Hyperborea. "Vermilion Ox, the Year of": In DR & HU, a year during which the Haunting of Uthnor occurred. It followed after the Year of the Golden Rat. [L.J.Cornford]

V'hixia: In WH, a village on the boarder of the nameless desert, in south-eastern Mhu Thulan. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Viridian Winds: In WH, a fearsome flying mist known to savants and sorcerers. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Vixeela: In TNG, the true-love of Satampra Zeiros. She worked at the temple of Leniqua as a temple-girl thoroughly trained in the dexterity of her movements. She was killed for her part in the thieft of the thirty-nine girdles. [C.A.Smith; J.Ambuehl]

Vizooranos: In ABN, a noted elder sorcerer and sage and author of the fabulous Noctuary of Vizooranos. Probably an early human rather than an antehuman. [R.M.Price]

Vorvadoss: In WH, "The Kindler of the Flame" an Elder God from the planet Bel-Yarnak who spoke to Jasu'un Toth. Viorvadoss is known by many other appelations: "Vorvadoss of the Grey Gluf", "The Flaming One", "Lord of the Universal Spaces", "The Troubler of the Sands", and "Who Waiteth in the Outer Dark". Voor, The: In SP, tiny worm-like creatures of great foulness who dwelt in Hyperborea and on Ultima Thule before the coming of man or even the antehumans. They were finally driven underground but have been known to surface to kidnap fresh victims. The Desolation of Voor in Thule is one of their sites. They dwell in Deep Dendo in their wicked Voorish Domes. [L.Carter (A.Machen)]

Voor, The Desolation of: In SP, the Desolation of Voor in Thule is one of the lands of the Voor (strangely "The Red Offering by Lin Carter mentions a "Desolation of Voor" also lying in Mu). Deep Dendo and the wicked Voorish Domes lie in caverns under the Desolation. [L.Carter (A.Machen)]

Voorm: In SM, the aponymous ancestor of the Voormis race. He was a grand shaman and advanced the philosophy of a permanent underground lifestyle for the Voormis race. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Voormis: In SG, TA, SM, etc., degenerate semi-human race. They are umber-coloured and shaggily furred. The speak with dog-like howls. According to the Book of Eibon they came from Kythamil under the leadership of Voorm, from whom they got their name. They established a culture on the Isle of Ta-Shon , but quickly decayed after Ta-Shon's sinking, and were picked at by the Gnophkeh until they had achieved a state of brutehood. Voormithadreth, Mount: A volcanic, four peaked mountain. There is some suggestion that the peaks have extinct craters. It is riddled with volcanic tunnels in which the furtive Voormis dwell. Deeper caves lead to the dwellings of Haon-Dor and the serpent folk, while even deeper is the realm of gods. It seems that when Hyperborea was split up by ice the peaks of Voormithadreth were split and "moved" (we know not how) as it has been identified with

Voormish Rituals: Magic rituals contained in the famous Voormish Tablets. [L.Cater]

Voormish Tablets: A set of magical tablets containing the ancient wisdom of the Voormis, prior to their collapse into decadence. [L.Carter]

Voothra: In CCF, "The Mute One". A god of luck, who has a temple in the village of Gharun-Zaae. It is depected as a repilian idol with long snaky limbs. [J.Ambuehl]

Vooth Raluorn: In FS, the High Constable of Commoriom who called the curse of Zvilpogghua down on himself by smashing a cult to that god. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Vultec Vad: In WH, a black-skinned behemoth of a demon, with cloven hooves and horned head, summoned by Izzamandiuth. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

V'zath: In WH, an alien planet to which a portal was made by Nirizium of Commoriom. It seems to have been colonised by Yekubbians. [J.R.Fultz/J.Burns]

Weapons & Armour: Among the weapons & armour of Hyperborea are: axes (TA & SG), bladed bucklers (SG), serrated spears (ID), bows and arrows (ID), maces (SG), broadswords (SG), and needle-tipped anlace (SG), short, leaf-shaped swords (ID), copper chain mail (SG), hunting knives (SG). A pick-ax of tempered bronze is mentioned in ID and can be counted as a weapon, it is more interesting for suggesting that bronze and copper are technologically current metals. [C.A.Smith, etc.]

White Sybil: In WS & TSZ, a fortune-teller who predicted the fall of Commoriom. Tortha fell in love with the White Sybil. [C.A.Smith]

Xactura: The King of Iqqua at he time of Milaab's expulsion. He was an old man and devotee of Yhoundeh. He was succeeded by his grandson, Tuluum. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Xeelan: In TZ, the heriditary chief torturer in the employ of Zykakis the wizard, and minor apprentice of the sorcerous arts. He is a stoical and unshockable man., a love which even extended to torturing his wife to death. he had two sons Hanstead & Belan. [I.Davey]

X'hyl: In DSH, X'hyl the Wise is the chief councellor to the Serpent King. It was he who chose to discover the meaning of the term "Zothoqqua". [J.R.Fultz]

Xiccarph: In IVP & UT, one of the five planets in a triple planet system. It is ruled over by Maal Dweb. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Yaksh: In FS & FTG, the Hyperborean name for Neptune. Zvilpogghua and Aphoom Zhah are connected with the planet. [C.A.Smith; L.Carter]

Yanur: In FS, one of the stout constables who accompanies Vooth Raluorn on his quest for Yzduggor. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Yarak: In CWW, LP & AF, the fabulous ice-mountain situated exactly over the north pole. It is said that the god Aphoom Zhah was imprisoned within the mountain until he was released by the Acolyte Athlok of the Pnakotic Brotherhood. Ycnagnnsssz: In FTG, a fissional being born on the dark star Zoth. It spawned the female entity Zstylzhemgni, possibly also on Zoth. [C.A.Smith]

Years: Hyperborean years appear to be named after animals and denoted by colours, in cycles, so we come across: The Year of the Green Spider (LE); Year of the Red Worm (LE); Year of the Crimson Spider (SC), Year of the Black Tiger (WAW & LE!) Yhemog: In SM, a Voormis Shaman who became apostate after being passed over for the post of Elder hierophant and tried to desecrate the temple of Tsathoggua. [L.Carter (Smith)]

Yhoundeh: In DS & LE, the elk goddess whose fanatical worshippers dominated the province of Zabdamar and Mhu Thulan during the lifetime of Eibon. Yhoundeh is the child of Zyhumé (q.v.). The Parchments of Pnom vaguely hint that Yhoundeh was married to "the Azathothian flute-player" (Nyarlathotep!). After the disappearence of Eibon and Morghi

Yikilth: In CWW, LP, etc., the legendary ice-island (glacier) which was used as a citadel and transport by the White Worm, Rlim Shaikorth. The ice-mountain was movable and apparently melted when that Outer One was killed. [C.A.Smith]

Ylidheem: In AF, PDW, another name for the Cold Ones (q.v.). It might also be applied to those human servitors of Rlim Shaikorth who have undergone the physical change to survive the unltratelluric cold of Yikilth. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Ylidiomph (planet): In UA, the Hyperborean name for the planet Jupiter. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Ylran: In CCF, a lieutenant in the army of an unnamed Hyperborean king. [J.Ambuehl]

Ymar: In FS, a frozen planet orbiting the green star of Algol, on which Zvilpogghua resides. Note: in "Strange Manuscript Found in a Vermont Wood" this is changed to Yrautrom. [L.Carter]

Yogmosh-Voth: In DA, the Elder Hierophant (probably of the Voormis) who gives details on Zushakon. [L.Carter (C.A.Smith)]

Yok-Zothoth: In US, the Hyperborean spelling of Yog-Sothoth, the All-in-One and One-in-All. A Cthuloid being whose legend is related in the Yog-Sothoth myth cycle. [C.A.Smith (Lovecraft)]

Zesh: The central province of Hyperborea, south of the Eiglophians. Zesh is almost completely taken up with jungles (hence it is called the Jungles of Zesh). Here Commoriom and Uzuldaroum after it stood. The province is officially called Pharnath (q.v.) during the Uzuldaroum Period. [L.Carter]

Zhothaqquah: In DS & US, etc., the name by which Eibon knows Tsathoggua. [C.A.Smith]

Zloigm: In UA & DT, the name of a mighty Serpent Man sorcerer, regarded by many as the

mightiest such. His doom came when he tried to summon Crxyxll (q.v.) only to undergo a body swap. He left behind a grimoire discovered by Zylac. [L.Carter]

Zloigmish Rituals: A manuscript book of rituals made by the Serpent Man sorcerer Zloigm. It contains a ritual form embodying serpent-man spirits in new bodies. [L.Carter]

Zoth: In FTG, the "dark star" Zoth is mentioned as a spawning ground for the Old Ones. It seems highly likely that this is Xoth of the Xothic Cycle. [C.A.Smith]

Zulchequon: In DA, the name given by Zylac to the "Dark Silent One", the god Zu-Che-Quon, an attributed to its worshippers in K'n-yan. [L.Carter (H.Kuttner)]

Zushakon: In DA, the name given by Yogmosh-Voth to the "Dark Silent One", the god Zu-CheQuon. [L.Carter (H.Kuttner)]

Zuth: In LP & LE, a village in Mhu Thulan, not far inland from the House of Pharazyn, in which Kathruale was worshipped until displaced by the zealots of Yhoundeh. [L.Carter]

Zyhumé: In a Smith Letter to Barlow in Dark Eidolon no.2, the androgyne animal Archetype Zyhumé, which still abides in that Cavern of Archetypes. Zyhumé is a sort of nebulous and more or less spheroid elk. [C.A.Smith]

Zykakis: In TZ, a powerful wizard of Hyperborea who is notorous for his love of torture. Said to have ruled Hyperborea for a millenia, although this cannot be accurate as Hyperborea lasted only 100 years after Eiboon's disappearence (DS) and Zykakis post-dated Eibon. [I.Davey]

Zylac: The Sorcerer of Mhu Thulan. He was an apprentice of Hormagor and then travelled to Mhu Thulan and through magic constructed a tower of black gneiss. [L.Carter (Smith)]
